REV. W.H. HOWARD

Rev. W.H. Howard, 67, the former pastor of Blackfoot M.B. Church died May 6, 2004 at the Crestpark Nursing Home in Helena.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Brown's Home for Funerals.

JOHN CHAIRSE

Funeral arrangements for John Chairse, 46, of West Helena are incomplete and will be announced later by Brown's Home for Funerals.

SUSIE MCCAIN

Funeral services for Susie McCain, 52, of Helena will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004 at the New Beginnings Family Church in West Helena. Elder Melvin Jackson will officiate. Burial will be at Magnolia cemetery in Helena.

McCain, born May 30, 1951, to the late K.C. and Viola Johnson in Lula, Miss., died May 2, 2004 at St. Vincent's Infirmary in Little Rock.

She was married to the late Cleo McCain and nine children were born to their union.

She was a member of the Beautiful Zion Baptist Church in Helena, where she sang in the church choir.

Her parents, husband, a sister, eight children and a grandchild preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Sara Vance of Helena; a brother, Isaac Thomas of Helena; one sister, Jeanette Thomas of Helena; two aunts, Lucille Maxey of West Helena, Virginia Taylor of Chicago, Ill., a grandchild and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins an friends.

Jackson and Highley Funeral Home will direct service.

VICTOR MARTIN

Victor Martin, formerly of Marvell, passed away May 4, 2004.

Arrangements to be announced later by Brown's Home for Funerals.

GERALD JOHNS

A memorial service for Gerald Randall Johns, 51, of Higden in Cleburne County will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2004 at the Olmstead chapel in Heber Springs. The Rev. Jim Harrison will officiate.

Johns, born Feb. 25, 1953 in Helena, died Monday, May 3, 2004 in Higden.

He had lived in Cleburne County for the past 15 years. He was the owner of Sugar Loaf One Stop and Rentals; was a member of the West Helena Assembly of God Church, Greers Ferry Chamber of Commerce and the Little Red River Bass Association.

His father, Gerald Johns, preceded him in death.

He leaves his wife Elisha; daughters Casey Johns of Mobile, Ala., Samantha Smith and Roni Smith both of Higden; a son Ryan Johns of Mobile, Ala., his mother Clarice Johns of Higden; two brothers Richard Johns of Higden and Jerry Johns of Little Rock, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Greers Ferry Chamber of Commerce in his memory.

Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Heber Springs www.olmstead.cc.

HAROLD B. JOHNSON

Harold B. Johnson, 77, of Largo, Fla. died Monday, May 3, 2004 in Florida. He was born in Blytheville, Arkansas, he moved to Largo in 1998 from West Helena.

He received a law degree from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn., in 1950 and received a Master's Degree in Social Sciences from Arkansas State Teachers College (now known as University of Central Arkansas in Conway) in 1960.

He taught high school in Hernando County and Middle School in Sumter County. He was also an inventor.

Survivors include a daughter, Janis Johnson, Belleair Bluffs, Fla., a grandson, Jared Johnson of Tampa, Fla., two great-grandchildren.

Anderson-McQueen Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center-Largo Chapel will direct service.

Ruth Richardson

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Ruth Richardson, 68, of Barton were held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 in Roller-Citizens Funeral Home chapel with Brother Gary Anderson officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Richardson, born Oct. 14, 1939 in Helena to Geraldine Grantham and the late Shelton James Brown, died Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2008 at her home in Barton.

She leaves her husband, Jesse W. Richardson of Barton; her children, David Richardson and wife, Jean, of Lexa, Jerry Richardson and wife, Carole of Barton, Debbie Rodman and husband, Johnny of Lexa, James Richardson of Barton and Ivan Richardson and wife, Carolyn of Barton; her mother, Geraldine Grantham of Helena-West Helena; an aunt, Gwen King of Helena-West Helena; a brother, James Brown and wife, Hazel of Helena-West Helena; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Her father preceded her in death.

Pallbearers were brothers-in-law, David Wilson, Bill Lindsey, Eugene Turner, Charles Taylor, Clifford Wilson, Buddy Richardson and Bob Purvis.

Roller-Citizens Funeral Home directed services.

James “Bo Pete” L. Sims

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for James “Bo Pete” L. Sims, 61, of Elaine will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at the Phillips, Lee, Monroe and Desha District Center at Helena Crossing with the Rev. Artis James officiating. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church cemetery in Elaine.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel.

Sims was born Feb. 13, 1947 to Eula B. Washington and James Washington in Wabash. He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age in Highland at the Morning Grove Baptist Church. He grew up in Wabash and later moved to Texas. He moved back to Elaine where he met and married Shirley Carney and to their union four children were born. He was a farmer until his health failed in April 2008. His parents preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted and caring wife of 31 years, Shirley Sims; five daughters, Martha Sims of Batesville, LaShica (Chuck) Scaife, LaTisha (Charlus) Brown, Natasha (Darell) Hayes, all of Marion and Alexis Sims of Horn Lake, Miss.; two sons, Kendrick McCraney of Atlanta, Ga. and James Lee Sims Jr. of West Memphis; six sisters, Ora Hart of Elaine, Gloria (Sylvester) Smith of Flint, Mich., Linda Lucas, Doris Rome, Carolyn Washington, Liberta Link of Denton, Texas; seven brothers, Bobby Johnson of Waterbury, Conn., Willie (Pat) Washington, Jerry Washington of Denton, Texas, Charles (Barbara) Washington of Moorehaven, Fla., Eddie (Regina) Washington , Larry (Kimberly) Washington, and Terry Washington, all of Denton, Texas; a sister-in-law, Libertha (Jonah) Watson of Houston; a brother-in-law, Charlie Carney of Memphis; a special nephew, Surome Hart of Elaine; two aunts, Odessa Lyles of Texas and Forretine Wheat of California; three uncles, Lester Lewis and Willie “June” Davis of Lewisville, Texas and Lawrence Watt (Lorin) Wyatt of Southland; 14 grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Brown’s Home for Funerals will direct services.

Judy Lynn Jones

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Judy Lynn Jones of Helena, Ark. was called home by the Lord on Sept. 9, 2008 in Las Vegas, Nev. Judy was born in Booneville, Miss. on Dec. 27, 1947 to the late Lorraine Sutherland Floyd and the late Kellous Floyd. She was married for 36 years to Brother William T. “Bill” Jones of Helena, who preceded her in death on May 3, 2005. Three children survive her, Amy E. Jones, Esq. of Henderson, Nev., Emily M. Jones of Las Vegas, Nev. and Justin A. Jones of Jonesboro, Ark. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Julia Jones and Joshua Badis of Las Vegas, Nev. and Cole Boyd and Kellous Boyd of Henderson, Nev. She leaves her sister, Ann Bonner, of Jonesville, La., and was preceded in death by her sister, Patty Malloy of Paragould, Ark. Her dear friend, Judye Miles of Hernando, Miss., her aunt, Geneice Crumby of Helena and loyal friend, Opal Jenkins of Helena also survive her.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at The First Baptist Church in Helena on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, her children ask that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or the National ALS Foundation.

Johnny R. Carr

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Graveside services for Johnny R. Carr, 71, of Helena-West Helena will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12 in Sunset Memorial Park. Rev. Dusty Rhodes will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.

Carr, born Nov. 24, 1936 in Tuckerman to the late William Carr and Cora Neal Carr, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 at his home.

He was a retired U.S. Army veteran who loved his country and was a retired truck driver who loved his family very much.

He leaves his wife, Perry Carr of Helena-West Helena; daughters, Laura Pearson of Fairhope, Ala., Tracy Robbins of Helena and Melanie Carr of Helena-West Helena; sons, Keith Carr of Woodbridge, Va. and Bruce Carr of Helena-West Helena; a brother, Paul Carr of Helena-West Helena; sisters, Shirley Mullins of Poplar Grove, Ann Ginn of Lexa, Mary Martin of Olive Branch, Miss. and Lois Phillips of Lexa; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

His parents, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Memorials may be made to West Helena Baptist Church, 702 Plaza St., West Helena, AR 72390.

James Michael Dills, Sr.

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - James Michael Dills, Sr. died Sept. 1, 2008, in Dallas, from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was born Jan. 24, 1931 in Memphis. He leaves his wife Nancy Donaldson Dills; children, Claire Dills Johnson, Judy Dills Evans, James M. Dills, Jr. and Kelly D. Dills; grandchildren, Laura Dills Gee, Lacey Evans and Alton Dills; great-granddaughter Riley Gee; and sister Ann Dills Dunn.

He was a CPA and was previously CFO of Helena Chemical Co., Vicksburg Chemical Co. and Friendly Chevrolet Corporation of Dallas.

He retired as CFO from American Dental Corp. Services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Memphis Funeral Home, Germantown Parkway Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dallas Area Parkinson’s Society 6370 LBJ Freeway, Suite 176, Dallas, TX 75240-6400.

James Maxey

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for James Maxey, 59, of Helena- West Helena will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 a.m. at the New Haven M.B. Church in Helena-West Helena. Elder Steve Cooks of Hamilton, Ohio will officiate.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

A repast will be held after the burial at Kincaid Funeral Service Fellowship Hall at 1164 Highway 49 West Helena.

James Maxey “Rag Mop” was born on Dec. 6, 1948 to Arlandus Maxey and Lucille Cooks-Maxey in Helena. He gave his life to Christ at an early age at King Solomon M.B. Church in Helena. He attended St. Cyprian Catholic School for his early education and graduated from Eliza Miller Senior High School in 1967. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Germany. Upon his return from Vietnam he married his high school sweetheart, Clinton Campbell, and to their union his one and only beloved son, Kevin Maxey, was born.

James later left Helena and moved to Flint, Mich. He continued his military service as an Army Reserve medical staff member. Genesee County Community Mental Health Service also employed him as a counselor. He retired from the United States Army. He received decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations and campaign ribbons, among them were the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal,

When James’ health began to fail, he moved back to Helena to be closer to family and friends. Maxey died Aug. 20, 2008 at his home.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his son, Kevin (Angela) Maxey of Helena-West Helena; his mother, Lucille Maxey of Helena; his sisters, Carrie (Troy) Bobo of Helena-West Helena, Colonel Beatrice Maxey of Greenbelt, Md., Patricia Maxey of Chicago and Constance (Marvin) Jarrett of Helena-West Helena; his brothers, Elder Steve (Hilda) Cooks of Hamilton, Ohio, Donald (Ann) Maxey of Hackensack, N.J. and Arlandus (Yvette) Maxey of Erial, N.J.; his grandchildren and a host of aunt’s uncles nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The pallbearers will be active soldiers of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Arrangements are entrusted to Kincaid Funeral Services Inc.

Shirley A. Watson

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Shirley A. Watson, 65, of Helena-West Helena were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 in the Roller-Citizens Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Rodger Hooker officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Watson, born Sept. 19, 1942 in New Madrid, Mo. to the late Paul and Mary Collier Arnold, died Sept. 12, 2008 in Helena-West Helena.

She leaves her husband, Anthony “Tony” Watson of Helena-West Helena; two daughters, Vicki Hardin and husband, Mike and Kathy Hyland of Douglasville, Ga.; two sisters, Earnestine Davis and husband, Ken and Mary Arnold, of Helena-West Helena; three brothers, James Arnold and wife, Linda of Helena-West Helena, Paul E. Arnold and wife, Beverly of Rogers and Bobby Arnold and wife, Betsy of Benton; stepdaughters, Denise Tomlinson and husband, Ray of Byron, Ill., and Dianne Flynn and husband, John of Bloomington, Ill.; a stepson, Doug Kampass and wife, Lisa of Houston, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.

Her parents and a sister, Margaret Kissick preceded her in death.

Pallbearers were Anthony Arnold, Brian Arnold, Jason Arnold, Robert Arnold, Gary Davis, Tommy Davis, Chad Alsup and Jimmy Woolbright.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 901 North University Ave., Little Rock, AR 72207.

Roller-Citizens Funeral Home directed services.
