Robert Edward Allen

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Robert Edward Allen, 54, of Helena- West Helena were held Saturday, Sept. 6 at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home with Rev. J.E. Elliott officiating.

Allen, who was born Sept. 25, 1953 to the late Edward Allen and Jeanette Henderson Allen, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 in Helena-West Helena.

He leave his wife, Sherry Ingram Allen of Helena-West Helena; his mother, Jeanette Allen of Mena; a daughter, Tahra Allen of Helena-West Helena; a son, Edward Allen of Helena-West Helena; a stepson, Dylan Bryan of Jonesboro; two sisters, Laura Allen of Hot Springs and Kathy Livingston and husband, Jeff of Helena-West Helena; two brothers, Larry Allen of Pine Bluff and Billy Allen of Mena; a half-brother, David Steele and wife, Teri of Portland, Ore. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers were Larry Allen, Billy Allen, Chris Lankford, Jeffrey Livingston, Josh Livingston, Jeff Livingston, Jerry Weaver and Daniel Parker.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 901 North University, Little Rock, AR 72207.

Lorena Walker Connaway

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Graveside services for Lorena Walker Connaway, 95, of Helena will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at Maple Hill cemetery in Helena. Father Travis Frank will officiate.

Connaway, born Nov. 10, 1912 in Helena to the late D.G. Walker and the late Annie Lorena Bolick Walker, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008 in Helena.

Lorena was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She taught Latin in the Helena School System and worked as a federal circuit clerk. She also worked for Walker Insurance Co. and for First Savings and Loan.

She leaves a daughter, Anne C. Pope of Sugarland, Texas; a son, John M. Connaway of Helena; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her parents, her husband, U.S. Navy Commander Fred Connaway; two sisters; and a brother preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 625 Pecan St., Helena, AR 72342.

Guy William Clay, Sr.

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Guy William Clay, Sr., 87, of Marianna died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 in Helena.

Guy was born on July 1, 1921 in Waynesboro, Tenn. to Isaac Ulie and Lillie Gallaher Clay.

Following time in the Army during WWII, he moved his family to California where he was employed with Bectel Construction Co. for 20 years. After returning to Marianna, he worked as a residential carpenter, re-modeling for a living.

Guy leaves daughters, Cindy Taylor and husband, Robert of Marianna and Barbara Helton and husband, Roy of Lexa; sons, Guy William “Bill” Clay, Jr. and wife P.J. of Conway and Russ Clay and wife Susan of Marianna; sister Era Haston of Sherwood; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary Jane, and his parents, Isaac and Lillie Clay.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 in Roller-Citizens Chapel in Marianna with burial following at Marianna Memorial Park.

Ophelia Boyd Hamilton

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Ophelia Boyd Hamilton 80, of Marvell will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 at the Pleasant Grove M.B. Church in Trenton with Rev. W.R. Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove cemetery at Trenton. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel.

Hamilton, born Oct. 22, 1927 in Marvell to the late Leon and Leanna Boyd, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 at her home.

She was converted at an early age and joined the Mt. Moriah Church in Marvell.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Leanna Boyd; her husband of 62 years, Arthur Hamilton; a son, Johnny Hamilton; four brothers, Theotis Boyd, Austin Boyd, Predell Boyd and Nathaniel Boyd; a sister, Bernice Starnes; three sisters-in-law, Laura Boyd, Earnice Boyd, Ollie Mae Boyd; and a brother-in-law, C.B. Starnes.

She leaves to cherish her memory nine sons, Arthur Hamilton Jr., (Patricia) of Marvell, Lionel Hamilton of St. Louis, Othello Hamilton (Teresa) of Chicago, Austin Hamilton of Chicago, Orlando Hamilton, Robert Boyd of Marvell, James Boyd of Kansas City, Mo., Greg Boyd (Sue) of Kansas City, Mo. and Lawrence Boyd of Marvell; four daughters, Delores Hearn of Little Rock, Mary Hoskins, Joyce Miller of Marvell, Janice Boyd of Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Vera Jackson, Essie Barefield (Elihue), Hattie Gage (Johnnie Lee), all of Marvell; a brother, Leon Boyd Jr., (Ethel) of Chicago; an aunt, Bessie Boyd of Trenton; two special nieces, Alice Lockwood and Kha Tandralyn (Tan-Tan) Holiday; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Brown’s Home for Funerals will direct services.

Lennie B. Washington

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - A non-traditional funeral service for Lennie B. Washington, 63, of Wabash will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 in the Jackson and Highley Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.

Washington, born Feb. 22, 1945 to the late Rev. Johnny B. and Alberta Washington died Aug. 23, 2008.

Lennie grew up in Helena-West Helena where she attended Eliza Miller High School. She gave her life to the Lord at an early age at Second Baptist Church in West Helena. She married James Marshal in 1963 and they had six children. They moved to St. Louis and later to Waukeegan, Ill.

Lennie loved to cook and had a passionate love for her family. She was the loving mother of Sandra “Faye” (Antwoine) Bates, Anthony Marshall, Carlos Marshall, Angela Marshall, Marcus Marshall, Michael Marshall, and Corey Marshall. She was a health care professional for many years and retired from Rolling Hills Manor.

She is survived, cherished and will be remembered by her special friend, Calvin Fondren; her children, her brothers and sister, Timothy Washington, Melvin Washington, Johnny (Jenette) Washington and Berida (Leroy) Williams; 21 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her neighborhood children; her uncle, aunts, nieces, nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.

A son, Anthony Marshall, her parents, Rev. Johnny B. and Alberta Washington and a brother, Cleburn Washington preceded her in death.

Jackson and Highley Funeral Home will direct services.

William J. Norwood

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - William J. Norwood, 76, of Holly Grove died Friday, Aug. 29 2008 at Stuttgart Regional Medical Center. He was born in the Ragtown community on Sept. 11, 1931 to William Joseph Norwood and Ethel Newman Norwood. He worked for Mohawk Tire and Rubber Co. and was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed socializing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a daughter, Sherry June Norwood.

He leaves two sons, Edward Norwood of Helena and Jerry Norwood and wife, Lisa of Scott Air Force Base, Ill.; a daughter, Judy Tipton and husband, Donnie of Clarendon; and two grandchildren, Cody and Ashley Norwood.

A visitation to remember and honor his life was held Sept. 1 at the Fowler Funeral Home in Brinkley.

Chester Arthur Perrine Jr.

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Chester Arthur Perrine Jr., 54, of St. Louis were held Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in St. Louis, Mo. A visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30 in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel in Helena.

Graveside services will follow in the Mt. Olive cemetery in the Sandtuck Community near Marvell.

Perrine, born March 16, 1954 to Chester and Olar C. Perrine in Marvell died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 in St. Louis.

Oscar Lee Harris Jr.

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Oscar Lee Harris Jr., 69, of Helena will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel in Helena with Rev. Jarvis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove cemetery in Helena-West Helena.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel.

Harris, born Aug. 20, 1939 to Bernice Grant and Oscar Lee Harris Sr. in Oneida, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008 at the Methodist North Hospital in Memphis. He accepted Christ at an early age.

His parents, three brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his memory, eight sons, Walter Harris, and Oscar Harris of Hughes, Michael Childs and Dewayne Childs of Little Rock, Nathanuel Lewis of West Memphis, Roderick (Rofonda) Harris of Atlanta, Ga., Nicklos Cooper of Little Rock and LaKeithon (Champ) Moody of Helena; five daughters, Michell (Alex) Cantrell of Little Rock, Johnnie Rena Harris of Detroit, Jacqueline Harris of Hughes, Kimberly (Rickey) Walker of Dallas and Faleishia Harris of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, John (Josie) Taylor of Chicago; four sisters, Shirley Harris, Carolyn Harris and Lacy Harris, all of Flint, Mich.; and Annie Lou Morrison of Rock Island, Ill.; 30 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a great-aunt Ruthie of Helena-West Helena; a special friend, Lula Brewer; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Roseland Elizabeth Tutor

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Roseland Elizabeth Tutor, 60, of Metairie, La., will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 in the Roller-Citizens Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.

Tutor, born Dec. 13, 1947 in Marianna to the late Curtis Pete and Lucille Stallings, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 in Elaine.

She leaves her husband, Donald Tutor of Metairie, La.; daughters, Rosemary Lumpkin and husband, Mark of Elaine, Kim Surrett of Shreveport, La. and Tasha Warren and husband, Chris of Lambrook; a sister, Sandra Hall of Elaine; two brothers, Roland Vondran of Elaine and Danny Vondran of Helena; grandchildren, Jessica Lumpkin, Blake Lumpkin, Kelsey Ray, Allie Warren and Kayla Warren.

Pallbearers will be Louis Olivares, Kaleb Hall, Terry Grubbs, Jimmy Faulkner, Marshall Faulkner and Landon Cravens.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Carolyn Wright

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Carolyn Wright, 88, of Helena died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008 in Helena with her children by her side. Mrs. Wright was born June 29, 1920 in Carrollton, Mo. to the late Frank T. McQueen and the late Bille Rice McQueen.

She was an assistant librarian at Central High School and worked for Economy Drug in Helena. She was a supporter of the Phillips County Chapter of Lions Club World Vision Aid. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Helena.

She leaves her son, Bob Wright Jr., and wife, Vivian, of Helena; daughters, Beth Bullard and husband, Commie of Searcy and Susan Shields of Little Rock; five grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren; two nieces; and three nephews.

Her parents, her husband, Robert “Bob” Wright Sr., an infant son; and a brother, J.W. McQueen, preceded Mrs. Wright in death.

Graveside services for Carolyn Wright will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Sept.12, 2008 at the Mt. Vernon cemetery in Forrest City. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Roller-Citizens Funeral Home chapel. Father Travis Frank will officiate.

Brenda L. Anderson

Helena-West Helena, Ark. - Funeral services for Brenda L. Anderson, 48, of the Southland community will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at the Springlake M.B. Church in Southland with Rev. James Baker officiating.

Final viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Springlake Memorial cemetery in Southland. Visitation is Friday from 5-7 p.m. in the Robert Lee Brown Memorial Chapel.

Brenda was born on Jan. 12, 1960 to Ethel Lee Reynolds and R.J. Anderson.

She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Pleasant Joy M.B. Church where she remained a faithful member until her death.

She received her education in the Barton-Lexa School District and worked with the Phillips County Health Department for over 10 years.

Brenda was preceded in death by her parents, Ethel Lee Reynolds Anderson and R.J. Anderson; and two brothers, Nathanial Johnson and Robert Johnson.

Brenda died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at Helena Regional Medical Center. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted son, Gregory Alden Davis, Jr. of Southland; goddaughter, Amanda Anderson of Helena; six sisters, Sheren (Gordon) Brown, Pecola Lewis and Ernestine (Leotis) Brown, all of Ypsilanti, Mich.; Caroline Anderson-Smith and Shirley Ann (Rev. James) Baker, both of Barton; 12 brothers, Leroy (Doris) Johnson, of Lexa, Donnie (Di-Di) Anderson of Orange, Fla., Michael (Rosemary) of Water Valley, Miss., Jonathan (Joe) Jones of Helena-West Helena, Bobby (Deborah) Anderson, David (Patricia) Anderson, both of Ypsilanta, Freddie (Georgia) Anderson of Ann Arbor, Mich., Ervin (Gwen) (currently serving in Iraq) of Atlanta, Ga., Arthur (Nell) Tucker of Texarkana, Calvin (Norma) Anderson of Atlanta, Michael Anthony (Marilyn) Anderson of Barton and James Dennis Anderson of Chicago; sister-in-law, Lillie Mae Anderson of Detroit; three uncles, Joseph Reynolds of Oneida, Rev. Johnny Anderson of Kansas City, Kansas, Willie Buirse of Little Rock and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
