Mary Mead McClendon

Mary Mead McClendon, 97, of Searcy, currently living in Jonesboro, died Sunday after a brief illness. Born in 1905 in Star City, AR and known as “Aunt Mary” to friends and family alike, she will be missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her during her long, faithful, and fruitful life. Her family rejoices in knowing that she is now at home in the presence of her dear Lord and Savior.
Daughter of Baron D. and Virginia Culpepper Mead, Mary’s life was marked by a lifelong commitment to the advancement of education in Arkansas. From an early age, her parents instilled in her a strong sense of right and wrong and encouraged her to pursue her own education in hopes of one day realizing her dream of being a teacher. She, in turn, instilled the same values in the students that she taught, emphasizing not only the importance of academic knowledge, but also of acting responsibly and with integrity. Mary attended schools in Lincoln Co. and Pine Bluff. She also attended State Teacher’s College, Arkansas State University, and Peabody. In 1926 “Miss Mary” realized her aspiration of being a teacher, and began her 38 year career in education. Her early years in a one room school house with more than 40 students of varying grade levels fueled her desire to work toward improvements in Arkansas schools. Mary taught elementary students in Pine Bluff, Whitten, Tyronza, Lepanto, and Marked Tree.
In the 1930’s while teaching at Whitten, Mary met and married W. A. “Gus” McClendon. During World War II, they lived in California, afterwards moving to Marked Tree, AR where they remained for 23 years. Mary and Gus moved to Heber Springs after retirement. They enjoyed 58 years of marriage together and were an active part of each community in which they lived. After Gus’s death in 1990, Mary moved to Searcy to be near her niece Linda Fullerton.
In addition to teaching, Mary was also actively involved in several community, state, national, and international organizations including the Arkansas Native Plant Society, the Thunderbirds Women’s Golf Association, AEA, ARTA, NEA, PTA, EHC, AARP, UMW, Extension Homemakers, Hospital Auxiliary, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an organization which promotes “the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.” Mary delighted in being actively involved in Delta Kappa Gamma for over 55 years and served in various state and local offices of this organization. During her life, she was instrumental in organizing the charter of two chapters of Delta Kappa Gamma, including one in Mexico City. This organization, perhaps more than any other, was closest to her heart because of its dedication to helping women educators in the pursuit of excellence in education.
Mary was also a lifelong, dedicated member of the United Methodist Church. She served as Sunday school teacher, member of the United Methodist Women, and belonged to various committees within the Methodist churches of which she was a member. Mary was an avid reader and never ceased from reading her Bible and taking comfort and wisdom from God’s Word.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Gus McClendon. She is survived by her nieces Linda Fullerton of Jonesboro, Andrea Fletcher of Hot Springs, Sandra Smith of Texas, and Barbara Neal of Texas, and her nephews Bob Mead of Pine Bluff and Winburn Hoover of Tennessee. She is also survived by 10 great nieces and nephews and 13 great-great nieces and nephews. Memorials may be sent to Fisher Street United Methodist Church P. O. Box 877, Jonesboro, AR 72403. All contributions will go toward the Children’s Summer Feeding Program.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 21, 2003. Services will be held Tuesday at 4:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Mike Morey of the First United Methodist Church of Searcy, Arkansas officiating. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens.
