Azalee Cartwright Sneed

Azalee Cartwright Sneed died September 11, 2003 in Eckert, Colorado at Horizon's Nursing Center after an extended illness.
Azalee was born in Higden, Arkansas on May 28, 1912. She was the third of eight children born to Effie DeRotha Henderson Cartwright and Henry Zedock Cartwright. Effie Cartwright passed away in April 1929, leaving a young family that Azalee helped raise. One infant daughter preceded Effie in death.
Azalee was baptised at age 14, in Higden, Arkansas in the Little Red River flowing past Higden. Her favorite hymn was "Shall we Gather at the River".
On September 1, 1929 Azalee married Dewey Edison Sneed in Shiloh, Arkansas. Azalee and Dewey spent the first few years of their married life in Higden before moving away to live in several different towns along the MN&A railroad route where Dewey earned their living. They left Arkansas in the 1940's when the railroad line went defunct, to live in Joplin, Missouri, then to Illinois for a brief time before moving to Flint, Michigan where Dewey retired in 1969 from General Motors as a tool and die maker. They then moved to Western Colorado to be near their daughters. Dewey died suddenly, of a heart attack, on May 24, 1988. Azalee remained in her own home for a few years but as she grew frail, she lived with her daughters, Lurleen DeBusk in Austin, Colorado and with her younger daughter, Maureen Bettis, in Littleton, Colorado.
Azalee is survived by one brother, Gene (Lloyd) Cartwright of Las Vegas, Nevada, and his daughter, Lisa, two daughters, Lurleen (Max) DeBusk, Maureen (David) Bettis, three grandchildren, Betty (Dave) DeBusk Davis, Kelly (John) Bettis West, Steven Bettis, and two great grandchildren, Ryan Bettis and Danielle Bettis. Azalee also helped her father with the four younger brothers. Jean died in June 1995, leaving behind a loving family including two daughters, Barbara and Lynn, two sons, Rick and Ron, all of California.
Azalee was laid to rest beside her husband, Dewey, at Mesa View cemetery in Delta, Colorado under the loving direction of Raymond L. Penick and Alice M. Penick, on Saturday, September 13, 2003. A tribute to her life was lovingly presented by Tom Peterson, a young minister who leads the Sunday services at Horizons Nursing Center. John West, husband of Azalee's granddaughter, Kelly, sang a song that he wrote to honor her, titled "Grand Mesa Wind". The song speaks of "the sweet gray haired lady with the white picket fence", referring to the white picket fence that Dewey build around their home in Eckert, at Azalee's request. The hymn "Shall we Gather at the River" was sung by Kathy Meehan, a lady gifted from God with the sweetest voice who gives freely of her talent for the folks at Horizons Nursing Center.
