Floid South

Floid South, age 76, of Drasco, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2004, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Born at South, Kentucky, on April 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary Elizabeth (Salings) South. Mr. South was a former resident of Long Beach, California, and had been a resident of Drasco since 1980. He was retired from the United States Navy and was a retired minister of the World Wide Church. Mr. South enjoyed reading the Bible, and meeting people and making new friends. He was preceded in death by one brother, David South. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann (Knight) South of Drasco, AR, one son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and JoAnna South of Ida, AR, two daughters, Karen South and Carol South, both of Nevada, five brothers, Veeland South of Texas, James South and Albert South, both of Louisville, Kentucky, Johnny South of Atlanta, Georgia, and Connell South of Seattle, Washington, two sisters, Jewel South and Ruby Alford, both of Louisville, Kentucky, and one granddaughter, Cynthia South. Mr. South is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 7, at 1:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 P.M. Graveside services and interment will be held Friday, January 9, at 2:00 P.M. in the South Union cemetery at Leitchfield, Kentucky. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.

Betty Joyce Sullivan

Betty Joyce Sullivan, age 73, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Wednesday, December 31, 2003. Born at Piggott, Arkansas, on August 27, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Presley and Alice (Church) Chapman. Mrs. Sullivan had been a resident of Heber Springs since 1989 when she retired from General Dynamics in San Diego, California. She loved dancing and was a member of the Sugar Loaf Folk Lore Society. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Heber Springs. She was preceded in death by her beloved, Francis “Pat” Patterson. Survivors include: one son, Ron Sullivan of Santee, California, one daughter, Sharon Shafer and her husband, Grimes, of Heber Springs, AR, three sisters, Neva Coomer of Piggott, AR, and Veda Haley and Jean Chapman, both of St. Louis, Missouri, four grandchildren, Shaun Sullivan, Rhiona Sullivan, Douglas Varty, and Amber Konkle, and two great grandchildren. Mrs. Sullivan is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.
Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon on Friday, Jan. 2, at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, at 2:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Derek Walker officiating. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Doug Varty, David Konkle, Grimes Shafer, Bob Bolding, Donnie Chapman, and Jim Vokes. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.

Hortencia Erevia Chapa

Hortencia Erevia Chapa the daughter of Pablo and Andelita Montablo Erevia was born in Caldwell County, Texas onDecember 15, 1924 and passed away in Heber Springs, Arkansas onDecember 31, 2003 at the age of 79 years. Mrs. Chapa was a retired convenience store owner for over 20 years and was a member of St. Alberts Catholic Church of Heber Springs. She enjoyed painting, flowers and collectables. Mrs. Chapa had been a resident of Cleburne County since 1987 and had lived prior in Findlay, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Natalio Ruiz Chapa on May 24, 2000. She is survived by two daughters Emma Baureis and husband Lon of Heber Springs and Sue Burkmier and husband Bob of Findlay, Ohio. Two sons Ernie Chapa and wife Beth of Findlay, Ohio and Mark Chapa and wife Myra of Heber Springs. Two sisters Sr. Angela Erevia of Omaha, Nebraska and Maria Bruehwiler of Heber Springs. 12 grandchildren Angela and husband Willy McCallie, Bob and wife Sherry Burkmier, Lon G. and wife Stacey Baureis, Charlie Baureis, .Anna Johnson, Leslie Chapa, Paul Chapa, Nat and wife Ashley Owen-Baureis, Joe and wife Megan Baureis, Nick Baureis, Grant Chapa and Austin Chapa. 13 great grandchildren Maria and husband Thomas McCallie, Shawn Burkmier, Jenny Burkmier, Andrew Burkmier, Victoria Baureis, Tara Baureis, Bridget Kelsey, Skylar Southerland, Crystal Baureis, Colton Johnson, Elena Johnson, Preston Baureis and Nadia Baureis. Visitation will be Friday January 2, 2004 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Olmstead Chapel with a Rosary Service beginning at 7:00 pm in the chapel. Funeral Mass will be Saturday January 3, 2004 at 11:00 am at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Heber Springs with interment following at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. of Heber Springs.

Mrs. Betty Louise Crisco

Mrs. Betty Louise Crisco, age 58, of Rose Bud, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Tuesday, December 30, 2003. Born at Bee Branch, Arkansas, on June 29, 1945, she was the daughter of the late R. E. “Rastus” and Rose Etta (Crawford) Main. A lifetime resident of Arkansas, Louise was a former employee of the Glove Factory, and she worked as a restaurant cook for the past eleven years. Louise enjoyed her hobbies of quilting and sewing. Her religious belief was Baptist. Her husband, James E. “Jimmy” Crisco, preceded her in death on September 15, 2001. Louise was also preceded in death by her parents and by one son, Charles Edward Bufford, who passed away in 1962. She is survived by two daughters, Jackie Weatherly and her husband, Wade, of Rose Bud, AR, and Loretta Jackson and her husband, Jeff, of Oakland, TN one stepson, Randy White of Ida, AR, four stepdaughters, Brenda Hunt of Heber Springs, AR, Anita Altom of Ida, AR, and Barbara Cramer and Brenda Crisco, both of Kansas, two brothers, Samuel Main of Jacksonville, AR, and Ervin Main of Quitman, AR, two sisters, Mizelle Arnold of Rose Bud, AR, and Marie Roberts of Searcy, AR, seven grandchildren, and many step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Louise is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. beginning at 6:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 1, at 2:00 P.M. at the New Hart Baptist Church with Rev. Bill McGill officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethesda cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nick Stark, Bill Pullum, Bill Nelson, Danny Crisco, Charles Hembrey, and Dustin Atkins. Honorary pallbearers will be George Gray and Billy Altom. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.

Paul Stanley Wimmer

Paul Stanley Wimmer, age 57, completed his journey on earth on February 11, 2004, at his home in Heber Springs, Arkansas. He was born on January 16, 1947, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at Hillcrest Maternity Center. Paul joined the United States Air Force and was enlisted from 1965-1969. After a three-year period as a civilian, he joined the United States Marine Corp. He moved through ten ranks including from enlisted and, after college, becoming a Mustang, an officer with earned respect. During his eighteen-year tour of duty in the Marines, he visited over thirty countries. He appreciated traveling, discipline, and took his service in the Marines with utmost dedication and seriousness. He retired with honors from the USMC in December of 1989. Paul had been a resident of Heber Springs for three years and was a former resident of Wagoner, Oklahoma. Those who knew and loved him have used these descriptions of him: He was honest, compassionate, forthright, loving, spiritual, honorable, moral, private, and funny. Paul was a Baptist Health Medical Center Auxiliary volunteer. He was active in the First Baptist Church of Heber Springs, AR, had a special fondness for the elderly and children, and actively studied his Bible. Two of his favorite scriptures were Matthew 7:7, 8 and John 14:6, and it was important to him that people come to know the Lord. Confidences of friends and family were safe with him, and his loyalty was unmatched by most. There are those that preceded him in death including his father, Graham Stanley Wimmer, and his stepfather, Leonard Owen Carter. Those who are left behind to remember him include his beloved wife, Andrea Lee Wimmer of the home in Heber Springs, Arkansas, whom he married October 1, 1980; his mother, Irene Carter of Heber Springs, AR, whom he loved dearly; a daughter, Lisa Renee Heim and her husband, Mike, of Felton, PA; three granddaughters, Whitney, Savannah, and Cheyenne Heim, his four girls, his special loves, numerous family members, each having their own place of affection, and many friends. He loved life and his family. Very few men can have and maintain the fine, irreprehensible reputation that he is known and will be remembered for. He is most certainly, and always will be, loved and missed.
Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held Friday, Feb.13, 2004, at 2:00 P.M. in the Arkansas State Veterans cemetery in North Little Rock with Pastors Larry Catcher of Hot Springs, AR, and J. R. DeBusk of Heber Springs, AR, officiating. Pallbearers will be Mike Heim, Kernoal Stephens, Sr., Kernoal Stephens, Jr., Brock Davis, Randy Wimmer, and Mark McKenzie. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.

James Alvin Johnsen

James Alvin Johnsen, 69, passed away at home on February 11 with his loved ones around him. Jim was born March 27, 1934 in Chicago, IL and was a graduate of DePaul Academy and Illinois Institute of Technology. He had a long and successful career at Teletype Corporation and AT&T Bell Laboratories and retired to Fairfield Bay, AR with his wife Judy in 1992. Jim enjoyed contributing to his community, travelling and spending time with his family - he took great joy in his grandchildren. In Illinois, he and his family provided foster care in their home for 25 years and Jim was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, scouting and midget football. He helped many in his Fairfield Bay community as a volunteer First Responder for the Rescue Squad, served for six years on the Fairfield Bay Community Club Board and was an active member of the Fairfield Bay Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Judy, brother Ron Johnsen (Gail) and five children, Matt (Nancy), Jennifer Roennau, Gabrielle (Amy Brantley), Paul (Keri Stika) and Michael (Catalina). He also leaves eight grandchildren Brandi, Pauli, Timothy, Andrew, Maria, Jimmy, Becca and Alexandria and has been blessed with many wonderful friends. Memorials may be made to the Fairfield Bay Lions Club or the Fairfield Bay Rescue Squad.
Memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, February 29, 2004 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the Concorde 20922 N. Rand Rd. Lake Zurich (1 1/2 miles north of Lake-Cook Rd.).
Memorial visitation for James Alvin Johnsen will be held in Fairfield Bay on Sunday, March 21, 1-4pm at the Johnsen home, 239 Pine Hill Road.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Fairfield Bay Lions, P.O. Box 1244 or Fairfield Bay Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1271, Fairfield Bay, AR 72088.

Mr. Thomas D. Badders

Mr. Thomas D. Badders, age 75, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, February 9, 2004, at the Central Arkansas Hospital in Searcy, Arkansas. Born December 25, 1928, in Heber Springs, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Joseph Jefferson and Aniline (Whitehurst) Badders. Mr. Badders was a retired DuPont Chemical plant operator, and he was a merchant marine. He was a former resident of Toledo, Ohio, where he lived for thirty years before returning to Heber Springs in 1979. Mr. Badders enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, and he made muzzle loading guns and jewelry. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dora E. (Davidson) Badders of Heber Springs, AR, two sons, David T. Badders of Drasco, AR, and Greg Allen Badders of New Smyra Beach, Florida, one daughter, Donna Badders of Heber Springs, AR, two brothers, Norman Badders of Heber Springs, AR, and Duane Badders of Van Wert, Ohio, two sisters, Gay Hamilton of Columbia City, Indiana, and Ann Messer of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Badders is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday and Friday at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Rolland officiating. Interment will follow in the South Cross Roads cemetery. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Mr. Bruce Eugene Wells

Mr. Bruce Eugene Wells, age 69, of Higden, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 10, 2004. Born in Crane, Texas, on November 9, 1934, he was the son of the late Bruce and Ray (Swafford) Wells. Mr. Wells was an independent oil driller and the owner of B. E. Wells Service in Colorado. He had been a resident of Fairfield Bay since 1999 and had recently moved to Higden. Mr. Wells was an antique collector and a coin collector. He was a member of the Jaycees in Colorado. His religious belief was Methodist. Survivors include four daughters, Nakina Gray and her husband, Arlis, of Fairfield Bay, AR, Darcy Allen of Dinosaur, Colorado, Angie Innes and her husband, Keith, of Midland, Texas, and Melissa Ward and her husband, Rick, of Fairfield Bay, AR, two sisters, Norma Arnold of Odessa, Texas, and Sherra Nell Titus of Longview, Texas ten grandchildren, Chris Wells, Nicole Bates, Farra Edwards, Natalie Allen, Bo Allen, Joshua Allen, Jason Innes, Jessica Innes, Cassie Ward, and Cory Ward and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Wells is also survived by other relatives and his many friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11:00 A.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Lee Brown officiating. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.

Mrs. Lillie Murvelee Bradley

Mrs. Lillie Murvelee Bradley, age 89, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Wednesday, February 11, 2004. Born in Scotland, Arkansas, on August 1, 1914, she was the daughter of the late John and Ora (Collie) Bowling. Mrs. Bradley was a homemaker and had been a resident of Heber Springs since 1960. She was a longtime member of the Southside Baptist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary #64, and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary #3543. Mrs. Bradley was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Bradley, on March 28, 1991. Survivors include three sons, Ray Eubanks of Clinton, AR, Jim Bradley of Duncan, Oklahoma, and Bob Bradley of Searcy, AR, two daughters, Charlotte Hipp of Heber Springs, AR, and Katie Bradford of Springfield, AR, one sister, Ellie Lowe of Formosa, AR, twelve grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, fifteen step-great-grandchildren, six great, great-grandchildren, and thirteen step-great, great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bradley is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 13, at 2:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Bro. Jerry Holcomb and Sonny Bradley officiating. Interment will follow in South Cross Roads cemetery. Pallbearers will be Steve Eubanks, Lonnie Horton, Dan Bailey, David Alexander, Robert Bradley, and Jim Bowling. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc., 601 W. Main, Heber Springs, AR 72543.

James A. Payne, Jr.

James A. Payne, Jr., U.S. Army Col. (Ret.), age 76, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, died Sunday, February 8, 2004, at Indian Rock Village Nursing Facility in Fairfield Bay. Born February 8, 1928, at Belleville, Arkansas, he was the son of the late James Arthur Payne, Sr. and Chloe (Grace) Payne. He attended Arkansas Tech University, Arkansas State Teachers College, University of Central Arkansas, and University of Nebraska at Omaha. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 and was a devoted Army officer for twenty-nine years, served two years in Germany, one tour in Japan, two tours in Vietnam, and six months in Thailand. Col. Payne commanded two Army units during his tours and was a staff officer in Major Army Headquarters. He was helicopter and fixed wing qualified with over 3, 000 flying hours and was also a pioneer in helicopter gunships. Included in his many service medals are the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, five Distinguished Flying Cross, five Air Medals, a Bronze Star, Commendation Medal, Joint Service Medal, many Vietnamese medals, and a Master Army Aviator Badge. He was a member of the Transportation Corp Aviation Association, Vice President of the Norfork, Virginia Chapter of the National Defense Trans Association, and Vice President of the Peninsula Chapter of Association of U.S. Army. Locally he was a member of the Military Officers Association and American Legion. Upon retirement the Paynes moved to Fairfield Bay where he worked in the Indian Hills Golf Pro Shop and later became Manager of Mountain Ranch Golf Course. He was later elected to the Community Club Board and in 1991 appointed President of the Club. Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marcella Huggler, and one brother, John Wylie Payne. Survivors include: his wife of fifty-five years, Jo (McGlathery) Payne of Fairfield Bay, AR, one daughter, Kelley Fielder and her husband, Tom, of Lynchburg, Virginia, one sister, Dixie Lou Reed of Dallas, Texas, and two granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth and Jaime Marie. Mr. Payne is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 4:00-6:00 P.M. at Woodland Memorial Park Chapel. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at 11:00 A.M. at the Fairfield Bay First Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Freudenburg officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Sylvan Carroll, Tom Clark, Fred Cruise, Herb Eggleston, Bud Lawton, Joe Lee, Don Reyburn, and Bill Tice. Memorials may be made to Indian Rock Village at Fairfield Bay, AR. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
