Mr. Vaughn W. Webb

Mr. Vaughn W. Webb, age 85, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at Beverly Health Care in Heber Springs. Born in El Dorado, Arkansas, on September 14, 1919, he was the son of the late Hugh and Jessie (Lowery) Webb. A resident of Heber Springs for thirty years, Mr. Webb was retired from the Arkansas Secretary of State’s Office where he worked in public relations. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy. Mr. Webb’s religious belief was Methodist.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lee Webb, and also by one brother, Woody Webb. Survivors include his wife, Linda (Roberts) Webb of Heber Springs; one daughter, Judy Cooper of Heber Springs; two grandsons, Matthew Mahurin of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and James Heuston of Massachusetts; two granddaughters, Jamie Lee Cooper of Heber Springs, and Laura Beth Jarman of Cabot; one great-grandson, Cooper Thomas of Cabot, and one great-granddaughter, Jesse Cooper of Cabot. Mr. Webb is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Feb. 18, at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Miles officiating. Memorials may be made to the Cleburne County Hospice. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Brian Kelly Smith

Brian Kelly Smith was born in West Plains, Missouri, on March 6, 1969, to Ruth (Piercy) Smith and Donald Ray Smith. They moved to Heber Springs in 1972, and he graduated from Heber Springs High School in 1988. Brian was very friendly and easy-going, always smiling and ready to help friends or family with any task. He was a carpenter by trade, employed most recently with Birdsong Builders. Brian had one son, Bryce Smith, and was a truly devoted father. His main hobbies were music and doing anything with his son. Brian and Bryce enjoyed playing games together and building model cars. They also really enjoyed fishing together. Brian was preceded in death by his father, Donald Ray Smith. He leaves behind his son, Bryce Smith; his mother, Ruth Fricke, and stepfather, Gene Fricke; brother, Michael Marion Smith, all of Heber Springs, one sister, Patricia Lynn Johnson of Pekin, Illinois; and another brother, Dennis Ray Smith of Monroe, Louisiana; He had nieces Allison and Ashley Smith, Alisha Lyons, and Megan Harlan, nephew, Jacob Johnson, and step-nephew, Jimmy Johnson, Jr., along with numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will begin Friday, Feb. 18, at 6:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Grant Vannatter officiating. Interment will follow in Heber Springs cemetery. Pallbearers will be Benny Duncan, Zachary Morris, Joe Roberts, Thomas Skipper, Scott Pitts, Matthew Brown, and Billy Sparkman. Honorary pallbearer is Bryce Smith. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Tyler David Tate

Tyler David Tate, age four weeks and six days, passed away at home in Greers Ferry, Arkansas, on Sunday, February 13, 2005. He was born in Searcy, Arkansas, on January 10, 2005. Tyler is survived by his father, Shannon Lynn Tate of Batesville, and his mother, Rachel Beth (Earles) Tate, two sisters, Kari Earles and McKenzie Paris, all of Greers Ferry, one half sister, Atlee Lambert of Cave City, his grandparents, Richard David and Linda Earles of Pine Bluff, his uncle, Paul David Earles of Greers Ferry, his grandparents, Charles and Margie Drewry of Carencro, Louisiana, Kim and Eddie Tate of Batesville, and Veda Martin of Batesville, and his aunt, Brandy Martin of Cave City.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, February 17, at 2:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Tyler’s great-uncle, Rev. Johnie Brewster, officiating.

Memorials may be made to SIDS Research at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, AR, or St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, TN. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Virginia Chalk Sanders Cullum

Virginia Chalk Sanders Cullum passed away at the age of 91 on Monday, February 14, 2005, in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was born in Higden, Arkansas, on March 23, 1913. She graduated from Heber Springs High School in 1933, then went on to attend nursing school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, graduating in 1936. During her forty year career as a registered nurse, she worked in both John Gaston and St. Joseph’s Hospitals, then finished her last twenty years of her career with the Visiting Nurses Association of Memphis. Upon retiring in 1976, she returned home to Higden, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Steve Chalk and Sada Hammond Chalk of Higden, Arkansas; her two sisters, Bessie Chalk Gadberry and Edna Chalk Rickert, and one brother, Willie Chalk, all of Higden, Arkansas; two husbands, Vernon Ezekiel Sanders of Grand Junction, Tennessee, and Roy W. Cullum of Higden, Arkansas. She is survived by two daughters, Jeanette S. Jennings of Memphis, Tennessee, and Doris S. Nipp of Greers Ferry; Arkansas; four grandchildren, Yvette J. Boyles of Lakeland, Tennessee, Lauren J. Placencia of Huntington, Tennessee, Dana T. Carek of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Brooke J. Toelle of Omaha, Nebraska. She was also survived by eight great grandchildren, Megan Placencia, Austin Boyles, Aaron Boyles, Addison Boyles, Haden Carek, Conner Toelle, Ryan Christian, and Reagan Toelle.

Visitation will be held at West Side Baptist Church in Greers Ferry, Arkansas, at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, February 17, with funeral services on Friday, Feb. 18, at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Gideons International, P. O. Box 811, Heber Springs, AR 72543. Arrangements: Olmstead Funeral Home, Heber Springs.

Kenneth Harold Lancaster

Kenneth Harold Lancaster, age 52, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away Monday, February 14, 2005, in Columbus. Born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on June 18, 1952, he was the son of Arthur N. and Alma J. (Cates) Lancaster. Harold was a certified public accountant and a former resident of Conway, Arkansas. He had lived in Columbus, Ohio, for fifteen years. Harold was a member of the NRA and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed baseball, sports, and racing. His religious belief was Southern Baptist. Survivors include his parents, Arthur and Alma Lancaster of Heber Springs; one brother, Kelley Lancaster of Clinton; one nephew, Phillip Lancaster of Heber Springs; and one niece, Paige Lancaster of Searcy. Harold is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 10:00 A.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Larry Loggins officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodrow cemetery. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Thomas Harold James

Thomas Harold James, age 73, of Quitman, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Born in Quitman, Arkansas, on March 9, 1931, he was the son of the late Samuel Vernie and Bonnie (Robinson) James. Mr. James was a carpenter and a lifetime resident of Quitman. He enjoyed hunting and was a member of Cleburne and White County Fox Hunters Club. His religious belief was Baptist. Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Alvie James. Survivors include his wife, Margie A. (Hearst) James of Quitman; two sons, Nathan E. James and Jeffery S. James, both of Quitman; one daughter, Carla James Schaumleffel of Quitman; three brothers, Fred James of Greers Ferry, Joel James of Quitman, and Charles James of California; one sister, Jean Burkett of Searcy; and two grandchildren, Austin James and Ryan Schaumleffel. Mr. James is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 11, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the Olmstead Chapel. Graveside services and interment will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2:00 P.M. in the Pearson cemetery with Dr. J. R. DeBusk and Rev. Terry Hill officiating. Pallbearers will be Norman Linn, Seldon Shaw, Pat Pike, Larry Goff, Doss Holland, and Joe Ivy. George Junior Rushing

George Junior Rushing, age 79, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. Born in Shirley, Arkansas, on March 12, 1925, he was the son of the late Mark and Lola (Hackett) Rushing.

Mr. Rushing was a retired steel worker for Armco Steel of Kansas City, Missouri. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. While serving in the United States Navy, Mr. Rushing received the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Philippine Independence Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, China Service Medal, and China Occupation, and he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign War. Most of his life, Mr. Rushing was a resident of Clinton, and he enjoyed fishing and coaching sports. His religious belief was Baptist.

Mr. Rushing was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia C. Rushing, on June 19, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Lola Rushing; one son, Vernon Rushing; one daughter, Mary Ann Sheets; one brother, Jo Ingle of Topeka, Kansas; and one granddaughter, Melissa Nicole Rushing. Survivors include four sons, Bob Rushing and his wife, Patti, of Sulphur Springs, Mike Rushing and his wife, Mena, of Heber Springs, David Rushing and his wife, Becky, of Conway, and Greg Rushing and his wife, Regina, of Clinton; one daughter, Anita L. Rushing of Little Rock; his daughter-in-law, Sandy Rushing of Snyder, Texas; one brother, Jimmy Ingle of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Bonnie Stephens of Grandview, Missouri; his aunt, Hazel Clark of Shirley; thirty-one grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Rushing is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 11, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2:00 P.M. in the Pee Dee cemetery Chapel with Rev. James Lovell officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Pee Dee cemetery. Pallbearers will be John McCloy, Jason McCloy, Chris Yount, Jeff Pate, Curtis Goerlich, and Chris Ward. Loren Lee Herren

Loren Lee Herren, the son of Loren E. Herren and Ruth Gieman Kitchen was born in Illinois on June 9, 1929 and passed away in Searcy, Arkansas on February 4, 2005 at the age of 75 years. Mr. Herren was a retired electrical engineer. His religious belief was protestant. He was a resident of Heber Springs since 1972 and was the past fire chief of Fairfield Bay having retired in 1975. He was a 32 degree mason and member of the Heber Springs lodge and also a member in Davenport, Iowa, He was a shriner, a member of the Toastmasters of America, the Sierra Club, Nature Conservatory, a troop leader of the Boy Scouts, a baseball and softball coach and avid hiker and backpacker and a man of great character and integrity. He is survived by his wife Betty Spence Herren of Heber Springs. a daughter Pam Beckham and son in law Dickey of Heber Springs, a son Loren Lee Herren Jr. and daughter in law Valerie of Little Rock, a son Mark Herren of Heber Springs and a daughter Anna Garman and son in law Dick of Pekin, Illinois. His mother in law Mary Spence of Heber Springs. Seven Grandchildren Christy Cook, Jamie Jarvis and husband Jeff of Heber Springs, Chance of Little Rock, Lauren Herren of Heber Springs, Jennifer Long and husband Patrick of Mackinaw, Illinois, Lindsey Garman of Pekin, Illinois and Kelsey Garman of Murray, Utah. Two Great Grandchildren Matthew Cook and Maygan Jarvis both of Heber Springs. Mr. Herren is also survived by other relatives and many friends.

A memorial service was held Sunday February 6, 2005 at Olmstead Funeral Chapel at 2:00 PM by Rev. John Miles. Arrangements by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. of Heber Springs.

Henry Rudolph May

Henry Rudolph May of Heber Springs died at home in Heber Springs on January 27, 2005. Born in Perrineville, N.J. he resided in the Hightstown area for 58 years before moving to Heber Springs, Arkansas.

Mr. May was employed by the Hightstown Rug Company for 22 years. He was the Mechanical Production Supervisor in charge of research and development. After leaving the Rug Co. he built and owned Cornelius Cobb a colonial furniture store in Colts Neck, N.J.

Mr. May was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served overseas during World War II. He was a member of the Cleburne County Humane Society, the Cleburne County Arts Council and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Heber Springs. He also was an avid boatsman.

Mr. May is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gertrude Julia (Bollengier) May of Heber Springs; one nephew Thomas Byrne of Heber Springs and many other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many other relatives and good friends.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at 2:00 P.M. in the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the East Windsor cemetery at Hightstown, New Jersey. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society or First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

James R. (Jim) Little

James R. (Jim) Little passed away suddenly February 1, 2005 at his home in Heber Springs and went to God’s great water garden in the sky. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle. . 'Papa Jim' will be dearly missed by all. As a friend, mentor, confidante, counselor, teacher, business associate, (musician, actor, fisherman, landscaper, 'perfectionist') and all-around go-to-guy. . .his knowledge and expertise were unmatched, as all who were blessed to know him will attest. 'Dadgummit!' as he said (no stronger language he ever spoke.) No finer man (and none more humble) ever walked, and we mourn our loss as much as we mourn his passing. 'One of these days, little buddy' will be held in our hearts as his wish to give us everything, forever. Born in Heber Springs on November 10, 1935, he was the son of Charlsie (Baldridge) Little and the late James Milton Little. Jim was a civil engineer and a lifetime resident of Heber Springs. He was a member of Heber Springs First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Barbara (Cooper) Little of Heber Springs; two sons, Dr. Aaron Little and his wife, Laura, of Searcy and Adam Little of Nashville, Tennessee; one daughter, Lee Ann Potter of Searcy; his mother, Charlsie Little of Heber Springs; one brother, Jack Little of Heber Springs; two grandsons, Kellen Potter of Kansas City, Missouri, and Colby Little of Searcy; and one granddaughter, Aubrey Little of Searcy.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Olmstead Chapel at Heber Springs. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the Heber Springs First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Heber Springs cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or charity of your choice. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Modean Martin

Modean Martin, age 78, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, January 31, 2005, at White County Medical Center in Searcy. Born in Des Arc on June 23, 1926, she is the daughter of the late James and Carrie (Oliver) Jernigan.

Modean, with her husband, was in the furniture business for over 30 years. She is Past Matron of the Eastern Star and has received her 50 year pin. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Heber Springs for over 50 years, where she taught Sunday School for the past 30 years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Rufo Martin; two sisters, Marie Daniel of Memphis and Mary Stanley of Port St. Lucia, Florida; two daughters, Angie Fisher of Atoka, Tennessee, and Pat Clay of Heber Springs; four grandchildren, Kim Newbill of Lucedale, Mississippi, Tommy Long of Hermiston, Oregon, Lance Long of Memphis, and Jennifer Pannell of Searcy; nine great-grandchildren, Derrick, Kristine, Devin, Paige, Aaron, Britney, Dakota, Adrian, and Jake.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Dolias Martin; two brothers, Tip Jernigan and Oliver Jernigan; and two sisters, Dissie Mae Bell and Willodean McGee.

Visitation is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 1, at Olmstead Funeral Home. Funeral will be Wednesday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m. at First General Baptist Church in Heber Springs with Dr. Dennis Powell and Rev. Grant Vannatter officiating. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Kelly Hays, Danny Martin, Russell Martin, Eddie Lacy, Greg Allen, and Nicky Stover.

Memorials may be made to the First General Baptist Church Steeple Fund.

Harry L. Gish, Jr.

Harry L. Gish, Jr., age 82, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, March 28, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born in Ballard County, Kentucky, on August 16, 1922, he was the son of the late Harry A. and Lillian (Perkins) Gish. Mr. Gish married the former Dotty Bea Meyers in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1944. A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. Gish was a former resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and had lived in Heber Springs since 1979. He was a retired Vice-President of Construction News Magazine where he was employed for thirty years. Mr. Gish was also a professional trumpet player for sixty years and enjoyed playing jazz. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians. Mr. Gish also served as bugler for the American Legion in Heber Springs, was a thirty-second degree Mason, and a member of the National Rifle Association. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Heber Springs. Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Dotty Gish of Heber Springs, Arkansas; one son, Harry Arnold Gish of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; one daughter, Harriet Ann Gish of Denham Springs, Louisiana; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Irene Gish and Stephanie Ann Gish, both of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Mr. Gish is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 30, at 2:00 P.M. in the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Miles officiating. Interment will be in the Heber Springs cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Cleburne County Library, or Heber Springs First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

PORTER CICERO HOUSTON

PORTER CICERO HOUSTON, THE SON OF JOHN W. AND SALLIE CLAYTON HOUSTON, WAS BORN IN PANGBURN, ARKANSAS, ON JANUARY 16, 1933, AND passed away AT HIS HOME IN QUITMAN, ARKANSAS, ON MARCH 26, 2005, AT THE AGE OF 72 YEARS. MR. HOUSTON WAS A RETIRED CONSTRUCTION ENGINEER FOR THE UNITED STATES ARMY AND AN EMPLOYEE OF WARD BUS MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF CONWAY, ARKANSAS, FOR 21 YEARS. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE HOWARD GENERAL BAPTIST CHURCH, A VETERAN OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY HAVING SERVED 21 YEARS, AND WAS AWARDED THE BRONZE STAR. HE LIVED MOST OF HIS LIFE IN QUITMAN SINCE RETIRING FROM THE ARMY IN 1974 AND ENJOYED WORKING AT HOME AND BEING WITH HIS FAMILY. HE WAS preceded in death BY A BROTHER, DAVID HOUSTON, AND A GRANDSON, DAVID LOFTIS. SURVIVORS ARE HIS WIFE OF 51 YEARS, BERTIE TACKETT HOUSTON; CHILDREN: SON, BILLY HOUSTON OF QUITMAN, DAUGHTER, MARTHA HOUSTON OF NORTH LITTLE ROCK, DAUGHTER, VICKIE LOFTIS OF ENGLAND, SON, RICKIE HOUSTON OF CONWAY, SON, ODIS HOUSTON OF QUITMAN, SON, RAY HOUSTON OF QUITMAN, AND DAUGHTER JACKIE BENNETT OF CONWAY; TWO SISTERS, MODEAN CRIDER OF QUITMAN AND MARTHA LOU FOX OF WICHITA, KANSAS. HE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY 14 GRANDCHILDREN AND 6 GREAT GRANDCHILDREN BESIDES OTHER RELATIVES AND MANY FRIENDS.

Mrs. Betty (Tate) Jackson

Mrs. Betty (Tate) Jackson, age 70, of Quitman, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Beverly Health Care in Heber Springs. Born in Hughes, Arkansas, on October 16, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Willie Agnes (Russell) Tate. Betty was a nurse’s aide and had been a resident of Cleburne County for most of her life. She was a member of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Her husband, Alvis F. Jackson, preceded her in death on December 3, 2002. Betty was a loving mother, grand-mother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by three sons, David Allen Jackson of Quitman, Robert Wayne (Bobby) Jackson of Jacksonville, and William Lane (Billy) Jackson of Bee Branch; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Betty is also survived by other relatives and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 25, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Olmstead Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26, at 10:00 A.M. in the Palestine Baptist Church with Rev. JILL LORANE STARK

JILL LORANE STARK, DAUGHTER OF THE LATE JACK AND EARLENE (WAYCASTER) PENNINGTON, passed away THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2005 AT HER HOME IN HEBER SPRINGS, ARKANSAS. BORN OCTOBER 11, 1972 AT POCAHONTAS, AR., JILL WAS 32 YEARS OF AGE. SHE HAD LIVED MOST OF HER LIFE IN HEBER SPRINGS BEING IN THE NURSING PROFESSION. JILL WAS OF SOUTHERN BAPTIST RELIGIOUS BELIEF. SURVIVORS ARE HER HUSBAND, JASON STARK OF HEBER SPRINGS, HER DAUGHTERS, ROBIN BROCKMAN AND EMMA STARK, AND HER SON, ERIC STARK, ALL OF HEBER SPRINGS. TWO SISTERS, LYNN DOLLAR OF DRASCO, ARKANSAS AND LAURA SMITH OF TRUMAN, ARKANSAS, HER GRANDMOTHER, WILLIE MAE REEVES OF TRUMAN, ARKANSAS, OTHER RELATIVES, AND HER MANY FRIENDS.

SERVICES WERE TUESDAY, MARCH 29, 2005 AT OLMSTEAD CHAPEL, HEBER SPRINGS WITH REV. JERRY HOLCOMB OFFICIATING. INTERMENT FOLLOWED AT MACEDONIA CEMTERY WITH JOEY STARK, DALE STARK, JACK MARSTON, TOM DOLLAR, JOEY RICHARDS, AND MARK FRANTZ SERVING AS PALLBEARERS. JERIMAH STARK WAS AN HONORARY PALLBEARER. VISITATION WAS MONDAY, MARCH 28, 2005, 6-8 P.M. AT OLMSTEAD FUNERAL HOME. ARRANGEMENTS WERE BY OLMSTEAD FUNERAL HOME, HEBER SPRINGS, ARKANSAS.

Dorothy V. Vallance

Dorothy V. Vallance, age 73, of Clinton, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Ozark Health Nursing Center in Clinton. Born in Louisiana on May 2, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Estelle (Starns) Vining. Mrs. Vallance was a homemaker and a member of Palestine Baptist Church at Pearson. She is survived by her husband, Harry Vallance of Quitman; two sons, Kenneth Vallance of Heber Springs and Wesley Vallance of Damascus; one daughter, Valerie Sloan of Mississippi three grandsons, Ben Vallance, Jacob Vallance, and Joshua Vallance, one granddaughter, Dhara Sloan; and one great-grandson, Isaac Vallance. Mrs. Vallance is also survived by her brothers and sisters, as well as other relatives and her many friends.

Visitation will be held Saturday, March 19, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Graveside services and interment will be held Sunday, March 20, at 2:00 P.M. at the Quitman cemetery with Rev. Bennie Foster officiating. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Malcolm Rowan Slayton

Malcolm Rowan Slayton, age 68, of Conway, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on November 2, 1936, he was the son of the late John M. and Lilla L. (Thayer) Slayton. A former resident of Kensett, Mr. Slayton had lived in Conway for the past fifteen years. He was an auto mechanic and a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Slayton enjoyed being outdoors, and he loved his family. He was of the Christian faith. Mr. Slayton was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Jean (Lackey) Slayton, his parents, and one grandson, Joseph Carl Slayton. Survivors include his five sons and daughters-in-law, Joe M. and Carla Slayton of Roanoke, Virginia, Jamie L. and Janetta Slayton and Darien G. and Debra Slayton, all of Conway, Lindell R. and Patricia Slayton of Damascus, and Ronald W. and Deborah Slayton of Sherwood, special family friend, Christy Sledge, six grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter. Mr. Slayton is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 23, at 10:00 A.M. in the Chastain Chapel cemetery with Pastor Tim Kellerman officiating. Pallbearers will be Joe Slayton, Jamie Slayton, Darien Slayton, Ron Slayton, Chris Smith, and Mike Cook. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

James Edwin Eddy, Sr.

James Edwin Eddy, Sr., age 74, of Jackson, Tennessee, passed away at his home on Monday, March 21, 2005. Born in Stamps, Arkansas, on July 12, 1930, he was the son of the late Hulen and Cecil Irene (Clemmens) Eddy. Mr. Eddy was retired from manufacturing underground cables for Western Electric and AT&T in Baltimore, Maryland, where he lived for thirty years. A former resident of Quitman, Arkansas, Mr. Eddy had lived in Jackson, Tennessee, for five months. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the United States Navy for four years. Mr. Eddy was a Mason, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Quitman. He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffery, and an infant daughter. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Esther (Sentz) Eddy of Jackson, Tennessee; two sons, James Edwin Eddy, Jr. of Arkadelphia and Mark Dwayne Eddy of Arlington, Texas; one daughter, Dolly Elizabeth Long of Fairfield Bay; two brothers, Cecil Eddy of Owosso, Michigan, and Mike Eddy of Arkansas; three sisters, Martha Kennedy of Hot Springs, Doris Jones of Thornton, and Kathryn Eddy of Fordyce; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Eddy is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 22, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 23, at 11:00 A.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Jackie Wilson and Rev. Susan Miles officiating. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Sam Newton Begley, Sr.

Sam Newton Begley, Sr., age 95, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, March 14, 2005, at his daughter’s home in Rogers, Arkansas. Born in Leslie, Arkansas, on May 22, 1909, he was the son of the late Allen and Melvina (Pruett) Begley. Mr. Begley was a retired timber worker. He had been a resident of Heber Springs for thirty-three years and had lived in Rogers for one year. Mr. Begley enjoyed wood working, reading, and walking. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Begley’s religious belief was Baptist. His wife, Nettie Ann (Patterson) Begley, preceded him in death on January 8, 1996. Mr. Begley was also preceded in death by two daughters, Demoie Willis and Leona Sechrest; his parents; four brothers, two sisters, and one grandson. Survivors include two sons, Utah Begley of Rose Bud and Sam Begley, Jr. of Quitman; four daughters, Lenora Chappell of Rogers, Leota Sechrest of Winona, Missouri, Leola Trammell of Pea Ridge, and Leann McCallister of Houston, Missouri; 34 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren, and 54 great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Begley is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 15, at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 16, at 10:00 A.M. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Kenneth Rolland officiating. Interment will follow in South Cross Roads cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Anna Johanna Dallas

Anna Johanna Dallas, age 91, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, March 14, 2005, at the Central Arkansas Hospital in Searcy, Arkansas. Born in Effingham, Illinois, on December 12, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Dora (Kettman) Buening. Mrs. Dallas was a homemaker and had been a resident of Heber Springs for thirty years. She enjoyed playing cards and working crossword puzzles. Mrs. Dallas was a member of St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Heber Springs, serving as a sacristan for twenty-five years, and she was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband Forrest (Frank) Dallas preceded her in death on October 20, 1981. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Survivors include two sons, James Dallas of Heber Springs and Dennis Dallas of Helena, Montana; one daughter, Patricia Ann Hrankaj of Chicago, Illinois; five brothers, Albert Buening, James Buening, Walter Buening, Raymond Buening, and John Buening; one sister, Marie Schoenhoff; two grandchildren, Darlene Hrankaj and Dorene French and her husband Dwayne, all of Elmwood Park, Illinois; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew French and Taylor French. Mrs. Dallas is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 17, at 5:00 P.M. at Olmstead Funeral Home with a vigil beginning at 7:00 P.M. Funeral mass will be held Friday, March 18, at 9:00 A.M. in St. Albert’s Catholic Church with Fr. Vincent Udo Ogbuji officiating. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

John Joseph McGrath

John Joseph McGrath, age 83, of Greers Ferry, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Central Arkansas Hospital in Searcy, Arkansas. Born in Bondville, Illinois, on October 14, 1921, he was the son of the late John Joseph and Ora (Meader) McGrath. Mr. McGrath was a retired boilmaker and a former resident of Carpentersville, Illinois. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. In April of 1984, Mr. McGrath moved to Greers Ferry where he enjoyed fishing and gardening. He had been a member of A.A. for twenty-nine years and served as an officer. Mr. McGrath was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church at Fairfield Bay. He is survived by his wife, Marcella May (Boylan) McGrath of Greers Ferry; two sons, Kurtis McGrath and his wife, Sandra, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and Michael McGrath and his wife, Deborah, of Lodi, Wisconsin; one daughter, Shirley Tippett and her husband, Dale, of Okawville, Illinois; one brother, Robert McGrath of Lakeside, California; ten grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Mr. McGrath is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

A visitation will be held Saturday, March 19, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Fairfield Bay. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. Tom Keller officiating. Interment will be in Dundee, Illinois. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.

Mrs. Elwanda Virginia Baldridge

Mrs. Elwanda Virginia Baldridge of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, March 14, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born in Shiloh, Arkansas, on February 17, 1922, Mrs. Baldridge was 83 years of age. She was the daughter of the late William C. and Flora (Love) Bittle, one of the pioneering families of Cleburne County, where she grew-up.

Mrs. Baldridge left Cleburne County during World War II and returned to live in Heber Springs three years ago. She was a retired data processor for the Richmond School District in Richmond, California. While a resident of California, Mrs. Baldridge was a volunteer with Community Projects in Napa, and she enjoyed gardening and her family. Her religious belief was Baptist. In 1973 she was preceded in death by her husband Frant Baldridge. Mrs. Baldridge was also preceded in death by five brothers, Lowell, Jess, Max, Ralph, and Alton Bittle, and two sisters, Jean Bivens and Lilly Mae Rorie. She is survived by one son, Don Baldridge and his wife, Sheryle of Vacaville, California; one daughter, Martha Rodman and her husband, Mark, of Napa, California; one sister, Betty Chesbro of Tulsa, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Max, Marissa, Amber, and Paul. Mrs. Baldridge is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon and Friday at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 19, at 11:00 AM. in the Olmstead Chapel. Interment will follow in the Pearson cemetery. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
