A.F. MACDONALD
Arizona Republican Newspaper
March 25, 1903

Saturday evening W.A. MacDonald of Mesa City received a
telegram notifying him of the death of his father, A.F.
MacDonald at Casa Grandes, Mexico. Accompanied by his
brother, G.A. MacDonald and his sister, Mrs. Maggie
Sorenson he left on the evening train for Mexico.

The death was very sudden and was a terrible shock to
the family. Mr. MacDonald had been in the mountains
where he was taken very sick, and after getting some
better he was taken to El Paso for treatment, remaining
there but a short time. On his return to Casas Grandes
he suffered another attack which proved fatal.

A.F. MacDonald was one of the early settlers of Mesa City
and was the first president of the Maricopa stake of the
Mormon Church or Latter Day Saints and was released from
that position only when he left for Mexico. He has been
a pioneer all his days and probably has done as much as
any man with similar advantages to colonize and settle
up the new countries in the south and west. He had a
master mind and was a born leader of men, commanding
their love, respect and confidence in all positions.
His loss will be felt in the colonies of Mexico and he
will be mourned by all who knew him.

PAUL McDONALD
April 25, 1896

Ash Fork: A tragedy was enacted fifteen miles south of here this
morning, in which Paul McDonald, a stockman, was killed by a
sheepman named J.W. Abshire.

McDonald has a most unenviable reputation and is credited with
having killed three men in his career. He was of a most
quarrelsome disposition and long sought to pick a quarrel with
Abshire against whom he had a grievance. He also tried to pick
quarrels with Abshire's men but never succeeded in provoking
them to fight. This morning he came across Abshire and was
more than usually abusive. The latter stood the insults for
awhile, then pulled a revolver and shot McDonald.

Abshire immediately notified the authorities of what he had
done and gave himself up. Little sympathy is manifested for
McDonald.

Mrs. Lee Grant McKelvey of Thomas committed suicide at that place

too dull, she seized a bottle of laudanum and drained the
contents. Not satisfied with the poison she procured a razor
and nearly severed her head from the body. Insanity is the cause.

MAE MAGUIRE
Sep 12, 1896

The many friends in this city of Miss May Maguire will be deeply
pained to learn of the death of that young lady at Santa Barbara
on Thursday. Miss Maguire was in Phoenix but a few months
ago and remained here several weeks. It was her second visit
as in this climate her health was greatly benefited.

She was a young lady of a charm of manner and sweetness of
disposition that endeared her to all with whom she was
acquainted. That a young lady of her many excellent qualities
should be stricken down by the relentless destroyer at the very
threshold of life is indeed sad and although many will mourn for
her, her memory will be cherished. The funeral will occur at
Santa Barbara today.

W.S. MARTIN
Oct. 20 ,1896

Word reached this city yesterday of a murder which was committed
last Friday night at Fool's Gulch. The particulars of the killing
of the man as near as could be ascertained are as follows:

A miner named W.S. Martin had been drinking heavily for several
days and was in a quarrelsome mood. He had a grievance real or
fancied against his stepson, William Chaffin, a young man 23
years of age. Wednesday night, while intoxicated he went to
his stepson's place. The latter lived in a tent and Martin
with a knife cut the tent open and slashed the canvas in
several places. After performing the work of his satisfaction,
Martin went to Congress Friday night, still in a drunken
condition. He found his stepson, whom he chased around the
camp with threats to kill him. He then went to his home where
he began abusing his wife, the mother of Chaffin. Chaffin,
it is said, entered the house and Martin turned on him with
the intention of carrying his previous threat to kill himself
into execution. The young man drew a 38 caliber revolver and
fired. The ball entered Martin's right breast, ranging downward
and passing through the kidneys.

Chaffin was arrested and taken to Congress. The injured man
lingered until 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon when he died.

A coroner's jury impanelled to investigate the cause of the
killing completely exonerated young Chaffin on the grounds
that he acted in self defense.
