CHRISANO VALENZUELA
June 14, 1896

Christano Valenzuela died at the county hospital, stabbed, it is
believed, the knife that did the deed having been in the hands
of Juan Valenzuela, his nephew.

The trouble occurred yesterday afternoon in a little group of
miserable brushwork huts north of the Maricopa and Phoenix
roundhouse. Here both participants lived. They, as well as
a number of neighbors, had bought a quantity of so-called
wine, made by an Italian in the vicinity.

Ybarra, who is a selling agent for Chapman Brothers Grocers
was in the store of Joe Alvarado across the street when
the row began. They ran across and were in time to see the
bloody work.

There seemed to have been no cause for the fight save the evil
influence of the liquor and the natural meanness of the combatants.
Jose Segura and Antonio Ochoa who were nearby saw a knife
flash in the hands of Juan and jumped forward to secure it
only to be driven back. Then Juan driving the older man
backward foot by foot to his very home and in the presence of
Christano's wife, stabbed him repeatedly.

The man was about 60 years of age, his nephew being about 30.
The couple have one child, deaf and dumb.

W.M. VANDICK
Sep 3, 1896

W.M. Vandick, a bartender of this city, committed suicide at
Bakersfield last Sunday morning by cutting an artery in his
left wrist and bleeding to death.

A bedmaker at the hotel where he was stoppling tried to get
into his room in the morning. Vandick said he was too sick to
get up and open the door. It was forced open and he was found
lying on the bed. He lived about three hours after he was found
and was conscious up to the last minute. He said he had no
relatives or fiends and would give no reason for his committing
the rash deed. He did the deed by wrapping a handkerchief
around a razor blade and slashing his wrist. Then he took a
pocketknife and jabbed several time, trying to pierce an
artery.

Deceased was here for several months and tended bar at the
Lemon Hotel and subsequently for McKelligon. He came here from San
Francisco. He was a consumptive and suffered greatly, which no
doubt was the cause of his committing suicide. He left here about
three months ago. From papers found on his person it was learned
that he was an Odd Fellow in good standing, being a member of
San Francisco Lodge. Deceased was a German about 32 years of
age. The remains were taken in charge by the Lodge of Odd

THEODORE WAGNER
Dec 24, 1896

Aubrey Station on the A & P Railroad was the scene of a killing
on Sunday night. The victim was Theodore Wagner and the man
who did the killing Antonio Johnson, a young man about twenty
one or twenty two years old. According to the Journal Miner,
Wagner was a shiftless man, whose wife runs the boarding house
at Aubrey for the section men. He had become so worthless,
refusing to help his wife, that the railroad men told her
that unless she got rid of him she would have to give up
the boarding house. Sunday night Mrs. Wagner decided to
go to Williams to take some sort of Legal proceedings against
her husband, just the exact nature of them she hardly knew
herself. A freight train had pulled into the station and
was waiting for her. She had put her cloak on, preparatory
to going when her husband came in and seized a big bread
knife and made a slash at her throat. As her cloak was
turned up around her nick, it shielded her from the attack.
Seeing the danger, the woman was in, Johnson who was near,
seized a six shooter and fired three shots, One went wide
of its mark and came near hitting the section boss. Another
caught Wagner on the thumb and the other took deadly
effect in the stomach. Wagner lingered till 7 o'clock
Monday morning when he died. His remains were taken to
Williams for interment.

Johnson was taken to Ash Fork for examination but it was
the general opinion that he would be released as the
testimony of eye witnesses to the tragedy was all to
the effect that had he not killed Wagner, the latter
would have killed his wife.
