ARTHUR WHITE
Sep 29, 1896

Arthur L. White, chief of the Phoenix weather bureau is dead.
Dissolution did not come after a long or short illness nor did
he have any premonition that he had one foot on the shores of
the other world. While yet in early manhood and in perfect
health he was stricken down by the grim destroyer without a
moment's warning. The first news received in Phoenix of his
death was a telegram received yesterday by Sumner Hackett, Mrs.
White's assistant, from Mrs. White, which stated that her
husband had been killed and she would return to Phoenix in
the morning.

The telegram did not state how Mr. White had been killed but
from parties who arrived from the north yesterday afternoon
it was learned that an accident had occurred at the Congress Mine.
Several people were visiting the mine and while being hauled to the
surface one of the cars jumped the track at the 1200 foot level.
The other two cars were piled up, dumping out the passengers.
When they were released from the wreck it was found that one
had sustained a fracture of an arm and the shaft boss had been
badly bruised. The rest of the party escaped with slight
bruises. It is supposed that Mr. White was one of the party. He left
here Sunday morning for Congress with the intention of establishing
a branch weather bureau and while there visited the mine with the
party of gentlemen who figured in the accident.

HARRY WOODS
Feb 15, 1896

Nogales: This evening a messenger arrived from Buenos Ayres with a
message to Collector Webb announcing the death of Deputy
Collector of Customs H.M. Woods at that place last night.

Mr. Woods was sitting in a chair conversing with several
gentlemen and suddenly fell and expired immediately.

He was a pioneer of Arizona and an old newspaper man. He was
formerly engaged in that business at Tombstone and later in
Nogales. He also held several public positions in Cochise County.

L.J. WOOD
May 3, 1896

Yesterday evening at 5:25 o'clock, Luther J. Wood, city assessor
and tax collector entered his happy home on South Second Street
in his usually apparent joyful frame of mind. Two minutes later
he was stretched on the floor of his bed chamber dead, with a
bullet in his brain.

The family heard the shot and rushed into the room from where
the report came and were struck dumb with horror to find him
on his back with a small stream of blood trickling slowly
from a wound in the right side of the head. Dr. Helm and
another physician were sent for immediately, but upon their
arrival there was nothing for them to do, for death must
have been instant.

With incredible swiftness the news was flashed through the
city that L.J. Wood had shot himself. No one would believe the
fact at first as many testified to meeting him at different
hours during the day and nearly all said that he had stopped
and talked with them as he usually did unless he was in a
hurry. A few minutes past 5 o'clock he was walking up
Washington Street in company with W.E. Buck talking on
various matters, but his conversation was as gay as usual
and no indication that he was troubled in mind was shown.
He entered Tribolets Market and purchasing some meat for
supper left Buck and cut across the city hall plaza to
his office where he took a revolver that he kept there and
wrapping it up in a piece of paper carried it with the meat
to his home.

The family consisting of his wife, Mr. McElwain, his father-in-law,
and Mrs. Roy A. Root, a nurse were about to sit down to
supper when he entered. He spoke pleasantly to each and to a
query of some kind from McElwain said, "that's all right." He
then passed to the kitchen and left the meat and then crossed
over to his bedroom for the express purpose of depositing his
revolver but had only been there a second or more when a shot
rang out and as already stated they found him lying on the
floor.

By the sad accident which befell Mr. Wood, a happy home was made
desolate for he was a happy husband and proud father. His son,
a bouncing boy of 7 months was the apple of his eye and he never
tired talking of the baby to his friends. He had been married
three years and his has always been a peaceful home until his
untimely and unforeseen death.

L.J. Wood was born thirty years ago in Alamosa, Iowa. He was
educated in the east and came to Phoenix about seven years ago
and ever since has been a most active worker in the Republican
Party. He was a man that made friends by the score and soon
grew to be one of the most popular young men in the country
as was evidenced by a large vote he polled when he was
elected City Assessor.

He was a most honest and conservative man and never could do
enough for his friends. His death is a sad blow to Phoenix
and he will be mourned by many as one of the most upright
characters in the county.

Besides his wife and son he leaves a sister, now in Denver and
an aged father and mother who reside in Viola, Iowa.

The coroner's jury will meet tomorrow morning and will take
evidence in the case which points conclusively and without a
doubt to an accident.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the
residence under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias and
the A.O.U.W. of which lodges he was an honored member. The
members of the latter order are requested to be at the hall
at 3 o'clock to attend the funeral.

June 6 ,1896

Woodmen of the World will unveil the monument at the grave of
deceased sovereign L.J. Wood at 5 o'clock on Sunday afternoon
next. Every member of the order is expected to be a the city
hall at 2:30 to participate in the ceremony. W.N. Tiffany,
consul commander.
