MRS. FRANK SMITHLINE
November 15, 1898

Mrs. Frank Smithline died yesterday morning of consumption at her
home two miles southeast of town. the funeral will take place
this afternoon at 3:30. It will be conducted under the direction
of the Daughters of Rebekah.

SAMUEL STACY
March 4, 1898

Samuel S. Stacy a prominent resident of the Cartwright District
died after a brief illness at his home five miles west of Five
Points on Wednesday afternoon. He had been in town the day
before. He was 50 years old and was one of the trustees of the
Cartwright district. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon
under the direction of J.J. Nunn.

MRS. H.W. STARKEY
March 2, 1898

Word was received in this city yesterday of the death of Mrs.
H.W. Starkey of White Hall, Ill. Mrs. Starkey was the mother of
Mrs. Charles H. Pierce of this city. She has been ill for several
years but for the two months preceding death her condition had
been critical. Mrs. Starkey spent a part of the winter here a
year ago and made many friends who will hear of her death with
regret.

BEN STEVENS
November 16, 1898

Ben Stevens, a young man who came here about three weeks ago from
Galesburg, Ill. died last night shortly before midnight of
pneumonia. His remains will be sent east tonight.

ANNA G. STRATTAN
December 18, 1898

Miss Anna G. Strattan died on Friday afternoon at the home of
her sister, Mrs. J.A. Copeland. Dr. McCreary will conduct the
funeral service this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence ,
538 North First Avenue.

MRS. W.R. SWINFORD
November 16, 1898

Mr. Lloyd Johnston yesterday received a letter from W.R. Swinford
of Chicago saying that his wife had died on October 31 and that
her body had been cremated according to her request. Mrs. Swinford
will be well remembered in Phoenix. She spent the winter here two
years ago and again a year ago. Her husband is a prominent member
of the Chicago Board of Trade.

MRS. J.H. TAYLOR
January 18, 1898

In the estate of the late Mrs. J.H. Taylor, whose husband has
been missing and supposedly dead, there are now two applications
for letters of administration. The first claimant is L.L. Plank,
who was selected by the creditors and the second is S.P.
Hoefer who is named by the husband who has just come to life
in California. Probate Judge Crouse will have to decide the
problem next Saturday afternoon.

MICHAEL T. THURSTON
November 12, 1898

Michael T. Thurston was found dead in his bed at the Star Loding
House yesterday morning. Death was probably caused by
tuberculosis. An inquest was ordered by Justice Kincaid, not
so much for ascertaining the cause of death as to develop
information about the dead. Thurston came here a month ago
extremely ill and he grew steadily worse. He said very little
of himself and what is known of him now is learned from papers
found among his possessions yesterday. There were account books
with butchers and grocers, a variety of notes he held against
several persons for small amounts. Some of these notes were ten
years old and were dated Perry, N.H. One of them was for $22
and it was stipulated that Thurston should received as
interest $5 a month until the note was paid. There were books
of a couple of savings banks, one in Portland, Maine and the
other in San Francisco. There was an account which appeared
to have been closed five years ago with the Hibernia Building
and Loan Assoc of San Francisco. Among the papers was a
certificate from a San Francisco Bank of a deposit of a claim
of $400 against the defunct People's Home Savings Banks of
San Francisco. There was found a pocketbook containing $34.90
some more notes and a paper on which he had written a will
bequeathing to his mother of Percy, N.H. all of his possessions.

Thurston body was taken to Davis undertaking Establishment and
a telegram was sent to Perey, N.H. making inquiry for his mother.
The dead man appeared to be about 35 years old. The inquest will
be finished today.

DANIEL TITUS
November 10, 1898

The will of the late Daniel Titus of San Francisco was admitted
to probate yesterday. He was a well known and wealthy attorney
of California. The property of the estate in this county is a
ranch on the south side which is bequeathed in the will to Frank
F. Titus, who has been a resident of the county for many years.

November 23, 1898

The will of Daniel Titus, late of Oakland ,California was admitted
to probate yesterday. His son Frank F. Titus is appointed executor
to the part of the estate situated in this county.

NATHANIEL TRAVERS
November 12, 1898

William Travers, an old prospector, died suddenly last night at
Slocum's Ranch three miles out of town on the Black Canyon Road.
Travers was in town on Thursday. He was taken suddenly sick
yesterday evening and Mr. Slocum came to the city after a
doctor. When he got home Travers was dead. The officials were
notified last night.

November 15, 1898

Application was made for letters on the estate of Nathaniel Travers.
The applicant is E.O. Slocum. Travers is the man who died
suddenly last Friday night at Slocum's Ranch three miles north
of the town on the Black Canyon Road. The estate is worth about
$1500 and consists of notes, accounts and personal property.
His relatives live in New York.

RANSOM M. VIALL
February 14, 1898

Ransom M. Viall died yesterday of pneumonia at his residence
four and one half miles south of the city. The cause of death
was pneumonia and the duration of the illness about two weeks.
The funeral under the direction of Will A. Davis will take
place from the residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The
burial will occur at the Loosley Cemetery.

The deceased was one of the early residents of that part of
the valley and was highly respected by his neighbors. He was 74
years old and leaves a daughter, who was with him at the time
of his death and two sons living in Los Angeles.

February 16, 1898

Yesterday's session of probate court was a busy one. The will of
Ransom M. Viall was presented for probate accompanied by a petition
for letters of administration by his daughter, Mrs. Ada McCay.

F.F. WARD
December 6, 1898

At 6 o'clock yesterday morning Mr. F.F. Ward, of the firm of
Wilson and Ward, shoe dealers, died at his residence at 417 North
Fourth Avenue. Mr. Ward was taken ill last Thursday and was
attacked by Hemorrhage. On Friday he improved and Sunday his
condition was no worse. Early yesterday morning he began to
sink and the end soon came.

Mr. Ward came here from San Diego about three years ago and
entered into the shoe business with Mr. Wilson. His father
and a number of brothers live in San Diego. One of the brothers
living in Albuquerque, Mr. Fred J. Ward, has arrived in the
city and will go to San Diego in company with the wife of
the deceased with the remains. The funeral services will
be held at 2 o'clock today. The deceased was about 28 years
of age.

WEBB Baby
November 28, 1898

The 10 months old baby boy of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Webb died suddenly
yesterday morning. Mr. Webb is absent in the mountains and
the funeral will not occur until he has arrived in the city.
The sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved parents.

November 30, 1898

The funeral of William Bryan, the 10 month old son of Mr. and
Mrs. S.F. Webb occurred yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock from
the family residence, three miles west of town. The services
were conducted by Ref. J.M. Weems of the M.E. Church South.

C.W. WILLIAMS
December 5, 1898

Col. C.W. Williams, formerly depot quartermaster at Whipple
barracks and who had a large number of friends in Arizona,
died a few days ago in Cuba of yellow fever.
