LEON ENRIQUE SOZA
February 26, 1901
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Leon Enrique Soza was accidentally shot and killed
yesterday morning by his eleven year old brother at
the family residence in Tempe.

The boys are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Juan Soza, well known
and respected Mexican citizens of Tempe. The family
resides in the Sotelo addition to Tempe between the
town proper and the creamery.

Yesterday morning about 8 o'clock the boys got out
their 22 rifle, presumably for target practice and
were playing around the house with it. The younger
boy, who says he did not think the gun as loaded,
pointed it at his elder brother and fired, the
bullet taking effect in the heart, death resulting
almost instantly. This is the whole story of the
deplorable affair as far as could be learned here
last night.

Coroner Tomlinson of Tempe summoned a jury and examined
into the facts of the case, after which a verdict was
returned in accordance with the above. There is no
question about the incident being purely accidental,
as the boys were not even quarreling and were usually
on the best of terms.

The dead boy was seventeen years old and was an estimable
young man. He had many friends in Tempe who regret his
untimely end and whose sympathy is extended to the
afflicted family.

with the name of Startzman, a native of Germany.

J.E. STEWART
February 25, 1901
Arizona Republican Newspaper

The following relative to a shooting affray at Dos Cabezas
has reached the Tucson Star through the mail, the letter
being dated February 19:

"There was a shooting scrape in the saloon of C. Herseig at
Dos Cabezas this morning at 2 o'clock, resulting in the
death of J.E. Stewart. It seems that the deceased, Jesus
Martinez and the barkeeper, Mr. Herseig, shook dice for
the drinks and a dispute arose over a horse between
deceaesed and Martinez, deceased calling Martinez a liar,
whereupon the latter answered that he was mistaken and
he (deceased) was the one lying. Deceased then struck
Martinez and forced him to a corner of the saloon, the
latter all the while telling deceased to quit hitting
him, that he was not looking for trouble.

The barkeeper then came around and as he neared the
contestants, deceased forced Martinez' head through
the window frame, stunning the latter. Then deceased
broke loose from the barkeeper, saying, "Let me kill
this Mexican" and going in the direction of the back
bar, where he knew there was a pistol. The barkeeper
jumped in front of him and there ensued a tussle for
supremacy, deceased constantly repeating the above
threat. About this time Martinez realized the danger
he was in and fired two shots in quick succession,
deceased falling and the barkeeper retiring out of
the front door. The deceased attempted to get up,
when two more shots were fired and Martinez retired.
Stewart, though suffering crossed to his room, where he
died within forty minutes after the shooting.

About the last words Stewart uttered was a telegram he
wished sent to his wife, in effect that he had been
killed and that he was sorry to leave her. The coroner's
jury exonerated Martinez and he was allowed his freedom."

EDWARD W. STUMP
August 31 ,1901

Bisbee has a sensation of her own to ponder over while the
rest of the territory is talking about the Nogales scandal.
J.W. Stump of that city has caused the arrest of John Foster
and J.B. Harris of that city, charging them with the murder
of his son, Edward W. Stump in Ash Canyon in the Huachuca
Mountains on August 27, 1897. The men are being held under
guard pending an examination which has been delayed by the
illness of District Attorney Land. The crime for which the
men have been arrested was one of those mysterious incidents
that occur so frequently in a mountain country. The men now
held to answer were among the first to assist, or pretend to,
in trying to unravel the mystery of Stump's death. It was
believed Stump came to his death accidentally by falling and
breaking his neck. It is now claimed by the local
authorities that some new evidence has been secured
which points toward the accused. The accused, on the
other hand, protest that their relations with the murdered
man were most friendly and that they are innocent of the
crime. One of them admits that his partner had a slight
misunderstanding with Stump over the boundary of a claim
but it was never so serious as to cause a rupture of
friendly relations.

Edward W. Stump was engaged in developing some mining
properties at the head of the right fork of Ash Canyon
near the top of the mountain, while Harris was working on
properties a little farther up, Foster being in the employ
of Harris. Shortly afternoon Stump left his camp to go
back to his work of clearing brush off the sides of his
claim, making ready for the surveyor who was expected in
a few days to make a survey of the claim. As he started
from his cabin he was seen by Frank Wright, who shortly
left, going down the canyon and who did not return until
the next day. Stump did not return to his cabin for
supper but no undue uneasiness was occasioned as it was
generally supposed that he had gone to the home of his
parents at the mouth of the canyon.

On Sunday afternoon, Wright with A. Hoch, better known as
Dutch, who was working with him, noticed a number of buzzards
circling around and about 100 yards from the Stump cabin.
Upon arriving they found the dead body of Stump, lying face
down on the sloping side hill with the head resting on the
left arm and a small piece of scalp gone from the back part
of the head and the ax lying few feet from the body.

Upon finding the body, one of the boys went up and notified
Harris and Foster at their camp and they came down and all
hands looked around for tracks or signs that would lead to
the cause of his death but could find none. One of the
party then went down to the Stump place to notify his parents
and Foster came into Bisbee to notify authorities. During
that evening the body was brought down to the camp of the
Montezuma Mining Company where it was when the coroner
arrived.

After the inquest the body was taken down to the ranch and
buried about two hundred yards behind the old Ash Canyon
house where it remained until a few weeks ago when it was
exhumed for shipment to San Francisco. Mr. Stump always
thinking that his son had been foully dealt with had Dr.
Edmundson present when the body was taken up to make a
thorough examination. When the remains were examined the
doctor found that four of the small bones in the back of
the neck had been crushed as the result of a heavy blow.
Mr. Stump swore out the complaint that led to the arrest
of Harris and Foster who were the only ones known to have
been in the canyon on the afternoon on which Stump met his
death.
