WILLIAM BLAKE
November 22, 1890

The funeral of William Blake was attended yesterday
with much solemn ceremony. The band led the procession
playing a funeral march and the Odd Fellows lodges
marched in uniform. The fire engine, draped in
mourning and drawn by two black horses, followed
the fire department, which turned out in full
membership in honor of their departed comrade.

Arizona Republican Newspaper
August 30, 1890

The funeral of Mrs. Margaretha Churchill took place from the
family residence at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Dr.
Rickerson performed the last offices of religion, speaking
feelingly of the many virtues of the deceased and the void
on earth left by her departure to the shore of peace. The
pall was borne by N.O. Murphy, T.D. Hammond, F.S. Ingalls,
H.E. Kemp, H.R. St. Claire and H.R. Patrick. The funeral
possession was one of the largest ever seen in Phoenix and
was a strong tribute of respect from nearly all of the best
people of Phoenix to the memory of a saintly woman who had
taken to herself the robes of immortal life.

John Clark
Arizona Republican Newspaper
December 15, 1890

Mrs. Catherine Clark, the widow of the late John Clark,
who was killed at the Imures Mine by a cave-in, was today
adjudged insane by the Probate Judge and will be taken to
the asylum tomorrow. The unfortunate woman has not been in
her right mind since the news was conveyed to her a few months
ago of the death of her husband. Her malady partakes of a
religious craze which is a constant call upon her Maker in
loud words to comfort her. With proper care it is thought
she will recover. She leaves three boys here who are
growing into manhood and are hardworking young men. The
sum of $2000 is due the widow from the A.O.U.W. of which
order Mr. Clark was a member.

MARY E. COLLINS
Arizona Republican Newspaper
October 30, 1890

Mrs. Mary E. Collins, wife of George U. Collins of this
city, fell dead yesterday of heart disease.

She had been attending household duties and had occasion to
step out into the yard. Her son was just entering with an
armful of wood and heard a deep groan. He turned to see his
mother fall. Rushing to her he raised her head only to hear
her last gasp.

Mrs. Collins was about 50 years old and came to this valley
with her husband and two sons from Santa Cruz, California
about eleven years ago. They purchased a farm three and a
half miles west of Phoenix and have lived there since.

The family is well known and Mrs. Collins was highly esteemed
in the community. The funeral will be held from the home
residence at 10 o'clock today. Dr. Rickerson of the Baptist
church will read the funeral service at the cemetery.

ARTHUR AEPLI
September 21, 1901

Arthur Aepli, the eleven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. P.
Aepli was burned to death about 5 o'clock yesterday
afternoon by the explosion of a can of kerosene.

The tragic affair occurred in the rear of the fruit packing
establishment conducted by his father at the corner of
Washington and Fourth Streets. The boy, who had worked
there all summer with his father was a bright little
fellow and has frequently been left in charge of the place
for hours while his father was out on business. He had
just returned from school and Mr. Aepli told him to stay
there while he went to supper and to employ himself meanwhile
in sorting fruit. In the rear of the building is a nest of
ants that have been a source of annoyance all summer and
the boy thought he would take time enough from his work to
exterminate them so he got a small can of kerosene and after
pouring some of the oil in the ant hole he touched a match
to it. He either held the oil can in his hand during the
operation or had it set down close by, the particulars
being unobtainable as the boy was alone. But at any
rate the can exploded and the oil, which was thrown all
over the boy, took fire and soon enveloped him in flames.
He ran into the store, where he was wrapped in grain
sacks, the only thing available to smother the flame,
by a gentleman in the employ of Mr. Aepli. Dr. Stroud
was summoned at once and arrived almost before the fire
was extinguished. The little sufferer was taken to the
Sisters Hospital where everything possible was done for
his relief but his recovery was hopeless. Death occurred
about half past ten, the little sufferer having lost
consciousness two hours before.

Mrs. Aepli was some distance in the country yesterday and
she was sent for last evening. Arthur was a good boy and
is highly spoken of by those who knew him. No arrangements
for the funeral will be made until the mother comes.

E.W. ALDERSON
February 1, 1901
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Despondency, due to the loss of his savings in an
unfortunate business venture, is believed to have
been the chief reason why E.W. Alderson took his
own life at his residence, 303 Magoffin Avenue at
4:30 o'clock, yesterday, says the El Paso Herald.

Alderson was 42 years of age. He came to this city
nearly a year ago from Arizona and had recently been
in the employ of the Candalaria Mining Company of
Juarez. Some months ago he invested his savings,
about $800 in the Senate Saloon, supposing he was
purchasing a half interest. The owners, it is said,
took possession and Alderson lost the money he had
invested. For several days past he had been drinking
heavily, but arose yesterday morning and said he was
going to work. Instead of going, however, he remained
at home during the day and seemed to be in a melancholy
frame of mind.

A few minutes after 4 o'clock he went into the bath
room. No one had a suspicion that anything was wrong
until a muffled report was heard. The next moment
Alderson staggered into the room with the blood
streaming from a jagged hole in the temple. He fell
backward without speaking a word.

Naturally the members of the family were horrified and
overcome by the spectacle. They laid the wounded man
on the bed and hastily summoned Drs. Bush, Irwin and
Thompson but the physicians were unable to stay the
and of death and after an examination pronounced the
wound fatal.
