MRS. DIXON
April 6, 1901

Mrs. Dixon, of Omaha died yesterday morning in the
passenger depot of the S.F.P and P. railroad in this
city having arrived here a short time before on the
train from the north. Her last hours were particularly
sad for the reason that though her daughter resides
here she was not apprised of her mother's coming and
the latter had passed death's portals before her
identity was known.

Mrs. Dixon was in a very feeble condition when she boarded
the train at Ash Fork and grew constantly worse till the
end. When she reached the depot here she was unconscious
and the trainmen put her in the waiting room and summoned
Officer Dowell who in turn called Dr. Hughes. By the
time the physician arrived she was beyond reviving.
Those attending her opened her purse and found a note
saying that if anything happened to her during the
journey to notify Mrs. M.W. Fields, a daughter in
Phoenix. Mrs. Fields was notified at once and she
gave directions to have her mother removed to
the hospital but before she could reach her and before
her instructions could be carried out she had expired.

Mrs. Fields says that her mother has been afflicted
with cancer of the stomach for years and has recently
been very ill. She knew that her mother had planned
to come here and only a few days ago sent her money
for the journey but she left Omaha before her letter
arrived and in fact without apprising the daughter of
the time of her departure.

The remains were taken to the undertaking parlors of Mohn
and Easterling, where the funeral will be held on Monday
afternoon at 3 o'clock.

H.E. DORRIS
October 13, 1901

H.E. Doris, a brother of E.M., C.D., J.W. and R.B. Dorris
and Mrs. H.G. Feekings of this city, died yesterday at his
home in Mississippi of gastric trouble. The news of his
serious illness was first received here in a message to his
son, Mr. Rupert Dorris, who prepared at once to leave for
the bedside of his father on the evening train. At the
depot he received a second message announcing the death
of his father. He started, nevertheless, and will probably
reach home in time to be present at the funeral.

The death of Mr. Dorris is the first to occur in a family of
twelve brothers and sisters. He paid Phoenix a visit about
four years ago and will probably be remembered by a great
many. At that time he was the most robust appearing member
of the family here. His son Rupert has been here about a
year and is employed in the furniture store of Dorris
Brothers.

Obit Notice
October 25, 1901

The following tribute to the memory of H.E. Dorris, who died
recently in Mississippi is from the pen of his pastor and was
published in the Winona Miss. Times:

Mr. H.E. Dorris was born in Montgomery County Miss., October
27, 1852 and died at his home in the same county, October 12,
1901--age 48 years, 11 months and 15 days. He was married to
Miss Alice Kindred about 1875, with whom he spent twenty six
years of happily married life, when he was summoned up higher,
leaving a loving wife and ten children, but not without hope.

At the age of 24 he embraced religion and united with the
Baptist Church and was afterward chosen deacon which office
he filled with credit to himself, church and community.

JOHN DOWNING
June 21, 1901

Word was received in Tempe yesterday announcing the
death of Mr. John Downing in Los Angeles. He was a
brother of Mrs. James Carrol and Mrs. Anna White.
Both these ladies with the latter's two daughters,
Misses Bertha and Anna White left on last night's
train for Los Angeles to attend the funeral, which
will occur on Saturday. The late John Downing was
a veteran of the Civil War in which he saw much
distinguished service. He fought on board the
Monitor during the memorable battle between the
Monitor and the Merrimac. He received two wounds
during the operations at St. Phillips and Jackson.
He served under Farragut at the battle of Mobile Bay.

May 5, 1901

The funeral of the late Dr. Joshua Draper was held
this afternoon at the residence of his son, Mr. E.H.
Draper, on Mt. Vernon Avenue and was attended by the
Masonic order of this city in a body in regalia.

W.J. DUGGAN
September 24, 1901

On last Saturday W.J. Duggan, an old and well known resident
of this section, met a horrible death at one of the camps of
the Saginaw and Manistoe Lumber Company south of town. He was
employed on one of the skid ways in piling up the logs ready
for shipment to the mill here, when the timber supporting the
enormous load gave way. Immediately the logs began to roll
toward him, and in trying to escape he lost his footing and
fell. Several large logs passed over him, crushing out his
life. The remains were brought to this city and under the
direction of Undertaker J.S. Button were interred in the
cemetery last Sunday. Williams News.

J.S. DUNCAN
May 19, 1901

J.S. Duncan, who came here from Indianapolis about two
weeks ago suffering from lung trouble, died last
evening at his rooms on South First Avenue. He was
47 years old. He leaves a wife , who came here with
him and two children in Indianapolis. The remains
will be sent home tonight for interment escorted by
the bereaved wife.

C.M. DUVAL
December 15, 1901

C.M. Duval, who came here recently from Hutchinson, Kansas
and was then a very sick man, died Friday night at the Sisters
Hospital. He was well and favorably known in Hutchinson,
where the remains will be shipped for interment.

THADDEUS EMPEY
February 10, 1901
Arizona Republican Newspaper

Thaddeus Empey died yesterday morning at the hospital at
the advanced age of 71. He had been in Arizona for the
last twenty five years and is an old timer on the coast,
having lived in California and Nevada in the days of the
gold excitement. He was a resident of Tombstone in its
lively early history and has a large acquaintance all
over the territory. His most highly prized keepsake
was a letter he received once from Queen Victoria in
answer to a letter he wrote to her bearing the
information that he enjoyed the honor of having been
born the same day she was.

It was not supposed that Mr. Empey had living relatives,
though it was known that he was one of a family of eleven
children and that he was born in Canada. Since his death
a letter was found among his effects bearing date less
than a month ago and written from Montreal by an older
brother. The writer states that he is well to do and
extends an invitation to Mr. Empey to come to Montreal
and make his home with him. But as is so frequently the
case, the letter came too late.

JOHN FELTON
May 10, 1901

Mrs. Maud Felton, the wife of the man who died on the
Maricopa and Phoenix train last Tuesday morning, arrived
yesterday morning from her home in San Bernardino. She
had not learned of her husband's death until after her
arrival in the city. She was not sure, in fact, that he
was here at all. She said he left home more than two
weeks ago without a definite object in view but intended
to come to Phoenix. She had a letter from him after his
arrival in the city but had not heard from him for ten
days. She was more alarmed at his silence because of his
ill health, so she started out to find him.

Felton, during his stay here, stopped at the Ford Hotel.
He started home last Monday night, but before reaching
Maricopa discovered that he had lost his ticket to San
Bernardino. That night he was taken violently ill at
the Williams house and the next morning he started back
to Phoenix, intending to go to a hospital. Death
overtook him before he reached the city. There was
nothing about him by which he name could be ascertained.
The next morning his baggage was brought back from
Maricopa. It contained a single letter from a man
named Maybury of San Bernardino, introducing the bearer,
John Felton to Billy Mead.
