Vernal Jones, 38, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2001 in Yuma, AZ.
The Cocopah Indian Tribe lost one of its spiritual runners when Vernal passed away. He was known for his great running ability. In 1991, Vernal ran from Somerton, Arizona to the pyramid past Mexico City in Mexico. He ran for peace, humanity and awareness. He was a strong believer in the preservation of the Cocopah culture and traditional value. Vernal was also a former police officer for the Cocopah Tribe during the early development of the department.
Survivors include son, Nash Stephens; brothers Ruben Jones, Desmond Jim, and Larry, Anthony Phillips, Sr.; sisters Renee, Penny, Mary Jones, and Fern Jim; nephews Antonio, Allen, Alex Phillips and Loren Jones; nieces Dejazu, Jonissa Jones, Kayla, Eyahna Porter, Delsie, Kelsey Jim, and Angelina Phillips.
Vernal was proceeded in death by parents Maxie Jones and Fern Jim.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 16, 2001 at the East Cocopah Cry House at 5:00 pm. With cremation Sunday at 5:00am. Kammann Mortuary is handling arrangements.
RICHARD T. LEER
Richard T. Leer, 76, passed away June 11, 2001 in Yuma, Arizona. He was born in Iola, WI.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, 3 step-children, grandchildren, one brother and one sister.
Mr. Leer will be sadly missed by family and friends. No services will be held. There will be a memorial service later.
Jewell Marie Santoro
Jewell Marie Santoro passed away June 10, 2001 in Long Beach, CA. Beloved mother of Ronald Foster , grandmother of Phillip Foster , Brian Foster , and Rhonda Hoglen, and great-grandmother of Stephanie Foster , Phillip Foster , Jr., John Foster , and LeAnna Hoglen.
Born April 27, 1914 in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Jewell was the daughter of the late Jeffrey Luke Martin and the late Maybelle Newcomer, half-sister of the late Evelyn Johnson, sister-in-law of the late Frank Johnson, and step-daughter of the late Floyd Newcomer of Yuma, Arizona. She was widowed by Cargill Foster and Fred Santoro.
Known as "Jack" to her friends, Jewell was an avid bowler in San Jose, California and participated in leagues with her lifelong friends, Augie and Frances Chinnici. She also enjoyed horse races, evenings at the San Jose Elks Club, and dining at Lou's Village, which was co-owned by her brother-in-law, Louis Santoro and his wife, Alvina. Jewell and Fred Santoro retired at the California-Hawaiian Mobile Home Park in San Jose, and Jewell later moved to The Atrium Senior Living Center in San Jose.
Services will be conducted Saturday, June 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park, located at 300 Curtner Avenue, San Jose.
Winifred E. Rutledge
Winifred E. Rutledge passed away on October 16, 2000. She leaves behind her husband Sylvester Rutledge; and sisters Jean Poole, Vivian Brower of Alaska and Annette Thacker of Dome Valley, Arizona. Services will be held at the Assembly of God Church in Wellton, Arizona at 10 AM on Friday, October 20, 2000.
Grace Leger
Grace Leger, 75 of Yuma and Formerly of Californiadied November 26, 2000.
She is survived by her sons: Robert (La Ree) Leger and Donald (Viola) Leger. Five Grandchildren: M'Resha Ethna Leger, Sha Ree Grace Leger, Chanda Alica Rachel Leger, Tammy Leger and Tiffany Leger.
Great Grandsons: Hunter and Baileigh as well as a sister: Alice Krauss.
Mrs. Leger was preceded in death by her husband Blair J. Leger, A granddaughter: Teresa Leger and Great Granddaughter: Hope Ashly Leger.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at 10:00 A.M. At Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, South Eighth Avenue Ward. Arrangements by Sunset Vista Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematory.
Walter F. Moe
Walter F. Moe, 75, passed away November 27, 2000 in Yuma, Arizona. He was born January 10, 1925 in Huntington Beach, CA. Mr. Moe worked for Seattle Post Intelligencer and other papers in Washington, Oregon, California and Alaska as Circulation Manager. He was a member of V.F.W, D.A.V., Yuma H.H. Donkersley Post and The American Legion. Mr. Moe served in WWII as a Merchant Marine.
Survivors include his wife Theo of Yuma, daughter, Carol Vredenburg of Roseburg, Oregon, sons, Randall Moe of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Michael of Powell Butte, Oregon, grandsons, David and Timothy Vredenburg, grandsons Travis and Skyler Moe, 3 stepchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held at Johnson Mortuary, November 30, 2000, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Johnson Mortuary, December 1, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. John Goldstein officiating. Military graveside honors by American Legion Post #19. Final resting place will be Desert Lawn Memorial Park.
Honorary bearers include family members, Donald Vredenburg, Michael Moe, Randall Moe, David Vredenburg, Harold Reynolds, James Reynolds, Robert Kerslake.

Terry E. Stephens, passed away August 7, 2000. Born to Roy and Mary Stephens, June 10, 1944 in Yakima, Washington.
Survived by sons Ryan of Renton, WA. and Jason of Seattle, WA., three grand-daughters, a sister Donna Stephens of Bemidji, Minn.
If desired, memorials may be made to the charity of choice. No services will be held. The family will have a private memorial service at a later date in Seattle, WA.
