Patricia Ann Papillon passed away in Oakland, CA on December 7, 2001. She was the beloved daughter of Mrs. Sarah Brown and was preceded in death by her loving father Sidney Brown. She was the beloved wife of Isaac Papillon and the loving mother of Sidney Ragland of Oakland, Donald Ragland of Los Angeles, Doris Papillon-Thomas of Oakland, Deborah Wilkes of Chino, Isaac Papillon, Jr. of Richmond and Verlyn Papillon of San Lorenzo. She was the dear sister of Elliot Brown and dearest grandmother of Sidney Ragland, Jr. A host of other beloved grandsons and daughters also survive her.
A native of Oakland, CA, she was 61 years of age.

Friends are invited to call at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, on Wednesday, December 12, 2001 from 5:00 to 9:00pm and attend Funeral Services on Thursday, December 13, 2001 at 10:00am. The Service will be held at Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland. She will be entombed at Chapel of the Chimes.

Nelson Richard Norman
March 20 1943 - December 10 2001

NELSON RICHARD NORMAN
Born March 20th, 1943 in Berkeley, CA. A gentle, loving husband, father, and friend, he passed away on December 10th at his home of six years in Pleasanton, CA. Son of Richard B. Nelson and Geneva L. Nelson (both deceased), he is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 33 years, Carolyn, and his son Christopher. Brother to David L. Nelson and Linda J. Nelson; uncle to Brendan and Dana Nelson.

Richard had recently retired from a forty year long career at Oakland Metal Treating Co. before being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this past June. He was a proud USMC veteran of the Vietnam War, and a die-hard Raider fan who will be remembered for his endless humor, loyal friendship, and courageous spirit. Friends and family are invited to attend memorial services at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue in Oakland, on Tuesday, December 18th at 11am. A reception will follow at Richard's home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Richard's name to the hope Hospice, 6500 Dublin Blvd., Suite 100, Dublin, CA 94568.

Joyce Arlene DeSilva
April 13 1932 - December 27 2001

Joyce Arlene DeSilva died in Piedmont, CA on December 27, 2001. Her loving children, Kathryn Vigar of Diablo, CA and David DeSilva of Orinda, CA, survive her. Her son Douglas preceded her in death. Her dear grandchildren, Zachary Vigar and Niclole Vigar, Isabella and Delilah DeSilva, also survive her.
Joyce DeSilva was a longtime resident of Piedmont and a graduate of UC Berkeley. She loved collecting antiques, being near the ocean and spending time with her family.

A private Memorial Service for close family and friends will be on Friday, January 4, 2002 at Piedmont Community Church in Oakland, CA.

Donations in her memory may be sent to Lincoln Children's Center.

Jack Allan Lainer
October 10 1946 - December 23 2001

Jack Allan Lainer passed away in Oakland, CA on December 23, 2001. He was the loving father of Donald R. Lainer and James A. Lainer and the dear brother of Doug Lainer. His aunts, Margaret Logan and Betty Husing survive him. Her cousins also survive him: Jimmy Logan, Christine Husing and Marty Logan.
A native of California, he was 55 years of age. He had a military Army background, loved camping, boating, skiing, vacations with family. He was carpenter by trade and had a great knowledge of religious scripture. He was warm and kind-hearted with an outstanding gift for gab. He was there for all of us as support at one time or another. "The struggles are over, may you rest in peace."

Soyogi George Hashimoto in Alameda, CA on December 14, 2001. Beloved husband of Yoko Hashimoto of Alameda. Loving father of Tom Hashimoto of Richmond and George K. Hashimoto of Hayward. Dear brother of Terue (Takashi) Takahashi of Alameda, Tomiyo Yoshiwara of Alameda, Sachiko Ishida of Alameda and Midori (Dr. Ichiro) Kamei of Santa Rosa. Dear grandfather of Dorothy, Jennifer, Morgan and Haley Hashimoto. Also survived by brother-in-law Nobuhiro Yamamoto of Tokyo, Japan and sister-in-law Yaeko Hashimoto of Castro Valley. A native of Alameda, CA, aged 73 years. A member of the Buddhist Temple of Alameda. Friends are invited to attend Memorial Services at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Ave., Oakland on Thursday December 20, 2001 at 10:30a.m.

George Elbert Towns
May 9 1934 - December 27 2001

George Elbert Towns, age 67, died December 27, 2001 at Doctor's Hospital, San Pablo Campus. George was born in Vallejo, California on May 9, 1934 to William Newton and Lois Comegys Towns. He moved from Vallejo to Berkeley in 1950 and was graduated from Berkeley high School in 1952. He continued his education at San Francisco State University and received a Master's Degree in Public Administration, CSU, Hayward. He is survived by Rose Mary Towns (wife), Gordon C. Towns (son), Marjorie Towns Patterson (aunt), along with other relatives and friends. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on January 4, at 11:00 a.m. at Downs Memorial United Methodist Church, 6026 Idaho Street, Oakland, CA.

Margaret Roberta Frank
August 10 1914 - December 27 2001

Margaret Roberta Frank in San Rafael on December 27, 2001. Beloved wife of the late Fenton V. Frank. Loving mother of Alice M. Lowe, Joanne R. Frank, Karen F. Attix and Lawrence M. Frank. Dear sister of Barbara Shadix. Dear grandmother of Michael Lowe, Christian Lowe and Adele Attix. Also survived by niece Georgie Newcomb. A native of Kingman, Kansas, aged 87 years. An active member of the East Bay Garden Club, East Bay Organ Society, volunteer with the Dunsmuir House and Alameda County Election Board. Margaret "Peggy" Frank , nuturing mother and wife, extended her heart to all in countless acts of loving kindness. She was incapacitated by Parkinson's disease during the last 8 years, she still lived in dignity with patience, tolerance and compassion. Friends are invited to attend funeral services at Corpus Christi, 322 St. James Drive /Park Blvd, Piedmont on Thursday, January 3, 2002 at 10:00a.m. interment at St. Mary's Cemetery.

James Charles Laycock
April 9 1912 - January 21 2002

James Charles Laycock passed away from our arms and hearts on January 21, 2002. He was born on April 9, 1912 in Straight Creek, Kentucky. He grew up in Appalachian, Straight Creek and Harlan County, Kentucky. He completed college at Eastern Kentucky State in Mathematics and Education. He then married Mary Elizabeth Chappell, the class math whiz in July 1937. They taught high school and then began a family. At the onset of World War II he became a Statistician on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He retired from Atomic Energy Commission in the 1970’s. He and his family moved to California in the late 1960’s and started a business; Activity Resources Inc., located in Hayward, California. A company that published modern mathematics books that his wife wrote, manufacturing, and distributing the manipulative material that mathematics course work required. He retired from Atomic Energy Commission to run the growing company. He continued at Activity Resources until his death at age 89.
He loved his family and good cigars. He was a master fisherman, and followed Southern Conference Football. He was an expert in the garden and loved his fruit trees, especially his cherries. You could never leave his home whether you were a customer, family, or friend without an armload of some sort of vegetable or fruit.

He leaves his widow Mary C. Laycock of Hayward; Sons; Charles Marion Laycock and Don E. Laycock, daughters; Ann L. Chappell, MD, and Jane E. Laycock. Grandchildren; Charles M. Laycock, IV, Matthew D. Laycock, Stephen Laycock, Shawna M. Laycock, Melody K. Pantajja, Jasmine Barisione, Charles E. Chappell, James C. Laycock, II and Jessica Laycock. He also leaves behind one great-grandchild; Taytum Popp.

A Memorial Service will be held at Activity Resources Inc.; 20655 Hathaway Avenue, Hayward, CA 94541 (510) 782-1300 at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2002.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in his memory to the charity of your choice.

Irma Sundberg Johnson
March 11 1925 - January 30 2002

Irma Sundberg Johnson in Berkeley on January 30, 2002. Beloved wife of Captain Arthur Edvin Johnson of Orinda, CA. Loving mother of Bruce Allen Johnson of Walnut Creek, CA, Paul Arthur Johnson CPA of Oakland, CA and Dr. Carole Elizabeth Johnson of Auburn, Alabama. Dear mother-in-law of Sali Gold-Johnson of Oakland, CA. Dear sister of George Arnold Kalmar of Piedmont, CA. Dear grandmother of Jillian Johnson and Jocelyn Johnson. Also survived by sister-in-law Dagmar Johnson and brother-in-law Ltd Cmdr Werner Johnson USNR. A native of Oakland, CA aged 76 years. A graduate of University of Oregon 1947. A member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and a 50 year member of United Finnish Kaleva Brothers and Sisters Lodge No. 21 Berkeley, CA. She taught school in Oakland and Concord for many years. Friends are invited to visit at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland on Monday 2-4-02 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and attend funeral services also on Monday at 1:00 pm. Burial at Mt. Tillie C. Kelley

Tillie C. Kelley died in Oakland on January 24, 2002. Beloved wife of the late Bryan M. Kelley of Oakland. Loving mother of Richard Kelley of Denver, CO. Dear sister of the late Mary C. White of Santa Rosa, CA. Dear grandmother of Bryan G. Kelley of Tustin, CA and Alison C. Collitt of Denver, CO. A native of Oakland aged 94 years.

Nannie Ellen Johnson
August 11 1920 - January 26 2002

Nannie Johnson a Fremont, California resident entered into rest Saturday, January 26, 2002 in Fremont. Born in Casper County, Kentucky on August 11, 1920, she was 81 years of age. She will be missed very much by her longtime companion, Leo. She enjoyed playing Bingo, traveling to Tahoe and spending time with her family and friends.
Loving mother of Linda Moore of Fremont, Deborah (Dee) Fitzgerald of Fremont and Dennis Blackstock of Castro Valley. Dear sister of Jessie Rhodes of Oakley, CA. Devoted grandmother of three grandchildren.

Russell Yuen Fong
November 30 1907 - January 19 2002

Russell Yuen Fong born November 30, 1907, died in Oakland on January 19, 2002. Russell is survived by his wife Mabel of 59 years, children Suzanne Chan, Lawrence Fong, Jeffrey Fong, their spouses, Frank Chan, Mary Chong, Karen Fong; grandchildren Christine Damiani, Gregory Chan, Taylor Fong, Quincy Fong, Kelly Fong and Christopher Fong.
Born in Canton China, Russell came to the United States alone as a youth. He settled in California holding a variety of jobs including: a cook, chicken farmer and grocer. He was a resident of Oakland for over 50 years.

Russell was an accomplished baker and gardener, and a seasoned traveler. Family and friends will remember his annual New Year's Day party, especially his cakes and pies.

Family and friends are invited to attend a remembrance for Russell. Viewing will be held Thursday, January 24th, from 5-7 p.m., and a service will be on Friday, January 25th, at 1:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 1700 Webster Street, Oakland, CA 94612.

Ann Marie DeSantis
September 14 1909 - January 18 2002

Ann DeSantis 92, life long native of Oakland on January 18th 2002. She leaves behind one niece Beverly Ghilarducci, a great-nephew Dan Ghilarducci of Hercules, loving great-niece Susan Cannon of Walnut Creek and many other great-nieces & nephews who loved her very much. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
Friends are invited to attend the visitation on January 23rd 2002 from 5:00-8:00pm at Chimes Chapel, 4499 Piedmont Ave. Oakland. Funeral services will be held next day January 24th 2002 at 1:00pm. After the service, entombment will be held next door at Mt. View Cemetery. Friends are also invited to attend the reception in our Bible Cloister following the cryptside service.

Selma Sarah Sills
May 13 1916 - February 3 2002

Selma Sills passed away on February 3, 2002 in her residence in San Leandro. Beloved wife of Mitchell Sills for 62 years.
She was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After moving to California in 1952, Selma and Mitch became business owners of Storktown Baby Furniture Store.

Selma was a member of Temple Beth Sholom and a life member and past president of Hadassah.

During her retirement, Selma was an avid golfer and won numerous awards throughout her long time membership in the Marina Golf Course Women’s Golf Club. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans for relatives and friends.

She leaves behind her children; Susan Williams of Foster City and Iris Livingston of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, her son-in-law; Jack Livingston, her grandson; Shay Williams of Berkeley, Shay’s companion Kish Castillo, her special love, Mackinzie Castillo, and her devoted caregivers Marianne and Diane Drecuean.

Selma will long be remembered by her beloved family and many friends for her sharp wit and sense of humor and her kind and generous nature.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Graveside Service on Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park; 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA 94544.

In memorial, the family would prefer donations to Hadassah or to the International FOP Association; P.O. Box 196217, Winter Springs, FL 32719-6217.
