KOLARI-PENN
Cindy Kolari and Rob Penn, both of Grass Valley, were married in South Lake Tahoe on Nov. 26, 1996. Kolari was born and raised in Moscoki, Idaho and has lived in Grass Valley since 1989. She has been in the real estate and banking business for 18 years. She is the owner of Affordable Real Estate Loans in Lake of the Pines. Penn was born and raised in Grass Valley. He has been a firefighter at Watt Park Fire District since 1980. He is a full time Fire Captain with the Watt Park Fire District, and the drummer for Undercover, a local country/rock band. They will reside in Grass Valley.

TAYLOR-HURLEY
Lori Anne Taylor and Dennis James Hurley, both of San Diego, were married at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Palo Alto on Aug. 31, 1996. The Rev. John Cooper officiated. Taylor is the daughter of Ned and Margie Taylor of Penn Valley. She is a 1987 graduate of Nevada Union High School, and a 1992 graduate of California State University in Chico with a bachelor's degree in social science. She is employed at the law firm of Littler, Mendelson in San Diego. Hurley is the son of Ed Tim Hurley and Sharon Hurley of Penn Valley. He is a 1988 graduate of Nevada Union High School, and a 1992 graduate of the University of California Santa Cruz with a bachelor's in chemistry. He is a graduate student at the University of California in San Diego pursuing a doctorate in chemistry. About 120 people joined the couple at the wedding ceremony. The maid of honor was Tani Rutherford of Sacramento. The bridesmaids were Trina Hurley of Santa Cruz, Liana Ottaviano of Campbell, and Mary Caulder of Sacramento. The best man was Bill Eitel of San Diego. The groomsmen were Brian Hurley of Boulder, Colo., John Hurley of San Francisco and Don Taylor of Rocklin. A sit-down reception took place at the Emerald Hills Country Club in Redwood City. Special guests were the bride's grandparents Marge Watt of San Carlos and Len and Jenny Bruka of Watsonville; and the groom's grandparents Robert and Agnes Hurley and John and Lucille Kavanagh of Indianapolis; and friends and relatives from Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, and California. The couple honeymooned in Hawaii for one week. They will reside in San Diego.

EVENSON-BEGANY
Carlie Dawn Evenson of Chico and Erik Christopher Begany of Grass Valley were married at Ceasars in South Lake Tahoe. Evenson is the daughter of Rebecca Parker of Chico and Kenneth Wolf of Forest Ranch. She is a 1992 graduate of Pleasant Valley High School. She pledged Alpha Gamma RHO in the fall of 1994 in The Little Sister Program. Begany is the son of Alan and Cindy Thomas of Grass Valley. He is a 1990 graduate of Nevada Union High School. He works at Knights Paint in Grass Valley. About 50 guests attended the wedding ceremony on Dec. 7, 1996. The bride's flowers were a cascading bouquet of white roses. The maid of honor was Gillian Darling of Chico. The flower girls were Ashley Begany, Akasha Dykes and Coortney McGlaughlin, all of Grass Valley. The ringbearer was Rory McGlaughlin of Grass Valley. The best man was Alan Thomas of Grass Valley. A sit-down reception took place at the Fresh Ketch. Guest book attendant was Sharon Dykes. They couple honeymooned in Fort Bragg. They will reside in Grass Valley.

Salcedo-McCracken
Christy Salcedo of Grass Valley and Jeremy McCracken of Los Altos were married at Stanford Memorial Church in Palo Alto on April 12, 1997. Fr. Patrick LaBelle officiated. The bride is the daughter of Patricia and Julio Salcedo of Grass Valley. She graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1988, CSU-Chico in 1994, and obtained her teaching credential from Chapman University. She is employed by the Los Altos School District. The groom is the son of Marjery and Mike McCracken of Los Altos. He is a graduate of CSU-Chico, and is self-employed in construction. The bride's gown was Venetian lace over silk, with a chiffon train. The veil was handmade by the bride. She carried a bouquet of roses, sweet peas, and calla lilies. The matron of honor was Terry Mickel Sheffield of Chico. The bridesmaids were Carmen Salcedo and Diane Salcedo, sisters of the bride; Tami Salcedo, sister-in-law, and Robin Wargo, friend. The flower girl was Taryn Salcedo, age 3, of Grass Valley. The groom was attended by best men Ryan McCracken and Casey McCracken, his brothers, of Los Altos. Reception decorations and wedding flowers were done by friends Barbara Farey, Liz Hengesbach, Kathy Smith, Sharon Henry, Maria Dilts, Kim Black and Sue Rechs, all of Grass Valley. Special guests included the bride's two aunts from Minnesota, grandmother from Sacramento, and the groom's two aunts from Nebraska and South Dakota. The couple enjoyed a wedding trip on the California coast, and will reside in Los Altos.

Smith-Barrett
Aleta Dawn Smith of Grass Valley and Kenneth Rafael Barrett of Eureka were married June 21 [1997] at the home of the bride's parents in Grass Valley. The Most Reverend Paul Clemens officiated. The bride is the daughter of Cindy and Stuart Smith of Grass Valley. She graduated from Humboldt State in 1997 with high honors in Theater Arts. The groom is the son of Lupe and Gene Barrett of Eureka, and is also a graduate of Humboldt State. The bride's gown was ivory, and she carried a bouquet of cerise and ivory flowers. The maid of honor was Jalana Smith, sister of the bride. The bridesmaids were Simona Gabriel of Nevada City, Theresa McKenty of Puget Sound and Amber Vodden of Meadow Vista. The groom was attended by best man Eric McAlinn of Arcata. Groomsmen were Geof Barrett and Derek Barrett, the grooms brothers, of Tucson, and Lon Smith, the bride's brother, of Grass Valley. Approximately 150 guests joined the couple for the ceremony and buffet reception at the bride's parents' home. Special guests included relatives from Arizona, Ohio, Iowa and Southern California. After the ceremony, they were presented with a decorated boat for two and paddled around the pond while guests sang to them. After the reception, the groom saddled a white horse, scooped up his bride and rode away.

The bride is the daughter of Josephine Proctor of Grass Valley and Jack and Danelle Moriarty of Los Angeles. She graduated from Whittier College with a degree in theater arts and from National University with a master's and teaching credential in cross-cultural education. The groom is the son of Lidia and Jose Giles of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The bride wore her grandmother's wedding ring and an heirloom sixpence in her shoe. She carried a bouquet provided by Ursula Hocket of Grass Valley. The maid of honor was Kristin Ferres of Venice, Calif. The bridesmaids were Elizabeth Marziello of Chicago and Michelle Fernandes and Karen Eiler, both of Whittier. The flower girl was the bride's cousin, Morgan Alessini, age 8, of Los Angeles. The best man was Marcos Robino of Florida. The groomsmen were the bride's brother, Patrick Moriarty, of Los Angeles; and the bride's uncle, Bill Ross, and John Trace, both of Grass Valley. Approximately 120 guests joined the couple for the ceremony and dinner reception. Special guests included the bride's paternal grandparents, who had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The cake was made by Sue Ralston of Grass Valley. The photographer was Alice Hannemann of Artistic Images. The couple plans to travel to Argentina to celebrate with the groom's family since they were unable to attend the wedding. The couple honeymooned in the Bahamas.

KINKOR - ST. PIERRE
Janelle Marie Kinkor of Nevada City and Gerald Joseph St. Pierre of Ann Arbor, Mich., were married June 21 [2001] in a Baha'i ceremony at Moonshine Campground. The bride, a 1994 Nevada Union High School graduate, is the daughter of Charlene Brown and Larry Kinkor of Nevada City. She graduated from Dominican University in 1998 with a bachelor of science degree in environmental science and from the University of Michigan in 2001 with a master's degree in natural resource management. The groom is the son of Delores and Joseph St. Pierre of Michigan. He graduated from Wayne University in Detroit with a degree in biology and from New York University with a master's in comparative literature. Both bride and groom work at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. The bride wore a satin, embroidered voile gown and carried a handkerchief from a dear friend. She wore flowers in her hair and carried a bouquet of mixed summer blossoms. The matron of honor was Jen Wolf of Ann Arbor. The flower girl was the groom's niece, Melissa Harshmon, age 9, of Arizona. The best man was Eric Wolf of Ann Arbor. The ring bearer was the best man's daughter, Noni Wolf, 3, of Ann Arbor. Music was provided by Liz McAteer. Approximately 60 guests attended the ceremony and barbecue at Moonshine Campground. The photographer was Elise Brenner. The couple honeymooned at Glacier National Park. They live in Ann Arbor.

MOODY - FALK
Bernice Moody and Peter Gordon Falk, both of Penn Valley, were married July 8 at the Lake Wildwood clubhouse. The ceremony was conducted by the bride's sister, Carol Brink. The bride is the daughter of Salvatore and Marie Lobbato of San Jose. The bridegroom's parents are dead. He is retired from IBM. The bride wore an off-white dress with organza over taffeta, a blue opal ring from her sister and the same hat worn at her daughter's wedding. The matron of honor was Jennifer Munk of Lebanon, Ore. The best man was Keith Falk of Danville. Thirty-six guests attended the ceremony and buffet reception, followed by an open house at the couple's home. Original music was provided by Ed Boggs and Desiree Goyet. Special guests included the bride's 15-month-old granddaughter, Sarah Munk; the groom's grandson, Andrew Falk; and the bride's uncle and aunt, Joe and Pat Lobbato from Tigard, Ore. The guest-book attendant was Erika Falk. The couple will travel to Boston for a tour of historical sites and to enjoy the autumn colors. They live in Lake Wildwood.

POZNIK - COOVER
Bobbi Poznik of Grass Valley and Richard Coover of Colfax exchanged wedding vows on June 30 in an outdoor ceremony at the Quaker Hill site of the Nevada County Fairgrounds. The ceremony was officiated by the bride's son, Rick Ward. The bride is city clerk for Grass Valley, and the groom is an engineering technician with Tribex Corp. of Rocklin. The bride's son, Randy Ward, was her escort, and Kim Ward, her daughter, was the maid of honor. The best man was Alan Brigham. Debbie Brigham, accompanied by her husband, Russell, sang "The Road That Never Ends." A reception followed the ceremony for approximately 150 guests, who enjoyed a barbecue prepared by Bill Shultz. Music for dancing was provided by Ludi Hinrichs. Chris Harada was the photographer. The couple left the ceremony in a horse-drawn carriage and honeymooned in Niagara Falls. They live in Alta Sierra.

BROWN - LAY
Lisa LeAnn Lay of Meadow Vista and Mark David Brown of Concord were married July 28 [2001] at Empire Mine State Historic Park in Grass Valley. Doug Zike of Faith Lutheran Church in Meadow Vista performed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Linda Lay and of Mr. and Mrs. George Lay, all of Meadow Vista. She graduated from Colfax High School and the University of California at Berkeley. She works for the California Department of Parks and Recreation as a park ranger at Sutter's Fort in Sacramento. The groom is the son of George and Mary Jane Brown of Concord. He graduated from Concord High School and is attending California State University at Sacramento to become an elementary teacher. The bride wore her mother's wedding dress and her great-grandmother's pearl necklace. Her flowers were blue hydrangeas. The bride's honor attendant was Wendy Ari of Las Vegas. The best man was George Brown of Petaluma. The groomsmen-ushers were Scott Lay of Grass Valley, Marcus and Seth Davies of San Francisco, and Ken Twinbaugh of Antelope. The flower girl was Emma Lay, followed by her brother, Alex. The ring bearers were Derek and Conner Brown. The vocalists were Wendy Ari and Connie Lay Elmore. Special guests included Lois Davies of Grass Valley; Ted, Sheila and Michael Connely of Massachusetts; Jean and Neil Sullivan of Connecticut; and Mayrion Quinones and Santiago Romo of Madrid, Spain. The reception was in the LOVE Building at Condon Park in Grass Valley. The couple enjoyed a honeymoon at Disneyland, followed by camping and fly-fishing in the Sierra.

PURVIS
Jim and Margaret Purvis recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. On Oct. 20, 1942, Jim and Margaret took a troop train from San Diego to Parker, Ariz. They rode all night on the train's "day coach" with more than 3,000 soldiers and one female - the future Mrs. Purvis. They were married in the front yard of Mr. Purvis' sister's home. (The preacher went fishing and almost forgot the wedding.) Mr. Purvis says of his marriage: "Fifty-nine years. All good." Mrs. Purvis still keeps house and cooks all the meals. The Purvises have lived in Grass Valley for 33 years.

BOARDMAN
Albert and Monica Boardman of Grass Valley recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a small family party at the Lake of the Pines home of their eldest son. The Boardmans were married Nov. 20, 1941, in Salem, Ore., and have lived in California since then. They spent 50 years in San Mateo, where they were active in civic and educational affairs. Mr. Boardman was a business agent and lobbyist for Local No. 3 of the Operating Engineers Union in San Francisco for more than 20 years, and recently marked 50 years of membership in the union. He was a commissioner on the California Workers Compensation Appeals Board for 13 years before he retired in 1978. A homemaker, Mrs. Boardman was active in the Parent-Teacher Association in San Mateo for many years and in lay activities at St. Matthew's Catholic Church there. After Mr. Boardman retired, they traveled extensively in the United States and Europe before declining health curtailed those activities. They moved to Grass Valley in 2000 to be closer to family members. They have four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who visit them whenever possible.
