A Funeral Mass was held Friday March 21, 2003 at St Hilary's Church, in Tiburon CA. Private Inurnment will take place at a later date. Jim was born July 24, 1911 in Des Moines, Iowa to James and Anna Walsh. At birth, it was apparent to all that Jim was a special boy. For some of that era, being born with Cerebral Palsy would have been seen as a handicap. Anna and James Walsh had other plans for their son. So in 1933, Jim graduated from North High School in Des Moines, receiving his high school diploma with all of his classmates. In 1935, after the retirement of his father, Jim & his parents moved to Monrovia, CA to be closer to Jim's sister Helen and brother Joseph and his family. Upon the death of Jim's mother in 1949, he and his father moved to Berkeley to live with his sister Helen Walsh who was on the faculty of UC Berkeley. This started a long love affair with Northern California and specifically the Bay Area. Jim and Helen later moved to Stinson Beach where they lived for 25 years. He is probably best known for his daily early morning treks along the beach between Bolinas Lagoon and the Pacific Ocean. In 1985, Helen and Jim sold their beach home in Stinson and retired to Tiburon where they lived and travelled to Europe, the Far East, and the Caribbean. Jim especially loved Spain and Italy. In all his travels, and throughout his life, Jim never let his special condition dictate what he could, or could not, do. To those who knew him, this is his enduring legacy. Jim Walsh is survived by his niece Marian Darling of Walnut Creek, CA, his grand nephews Bruce Darling of Orinda, CA, Scott Darling of Portland, OR, and Matthew Walsh of Sierra Vista, AZ.
