Robert Charles Coleman
Passed away after a brief illness on April 5, 2003 at the age of 83. Husband of Inga for 52 years. Father of Bryce and Bill; father-in-law of Sara. Grandfather of Ashley and Peter. Brother of Margaret Cooper and William Coleman. He was loved and adored by all. Bob was born and raised in Glendale, California by his beloved mother, Mamie, and father, John. Bob was a World War II veteran, serving in the European Theater as a B-17 Pilot attached to the 336th Squadron, 96th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force based in England. He was affectionately known as "Doc" by his crew because of his prior training in pharmacology. He graduated from the University of Southern California following the war. Bob was a member of Redwoods Presbyterian Church, where he served in the Choir and took part in all aspects of church life. He retired from the Postal Service after a career as a Postal Inspector. Bob enjoyed the companionship of many close friends. He enjoyed many of the simple things in life: golf, bowling, walking, and barbecue. He was known as a gentleman with a good word to say to all, and he entertained many over the years with his harmonica. Bob found joy in time spent with his family, most especially with his adored wife and partner, Inga. His faith was profound and personal, and he lived his life knowing that he was loved and known by God. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at Redwoods Presbyterian Church in Larkspur, 110 Magnolia Avenue. Marjorie Ellen Hooper
Of San Rafael, passed away April 6, 2003 at age 82 years. Marjorie is survived by her son Sonny Harriman, daughter Janet Gregory-Fowler; two grandchildren Shannon and Scott; two great grandchildren Morgan and Alex; one brother Sam Avila; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 2:00 PM in the Novato Community of Christ Church, 375 Calle Arboleda Street, Novato, CA. Pastors Janet Irby and Karen Ardito officiating. Robert L. "Bob" McMurray
March 9, 1922 - April 7, 2003
Bob passed away after a lengthy illness on April 7, 2003 at the age of 81. He was born in Berkeley and lived in Marin for over 60 years. He had a love for his family, boating, and woodworking. He retired from a career with the Department of the Navy as Chief Planner/ Estimator. He was a member of the National Association of Marine Surveyors. He designed and built many boats and his designs were published in popular boating and fishing magazines. Bob not only designed and built his home of 47 years, he built furniture for his home and the homes of his children and other family members and friends. Bob is survived by Beatrice, his loving wife of 52 years, his children Terry Jastram of Rehoboth, MA, Mary Hoell of El Sobrante, Bill McMurray of Novato, David McMurray of Milpitas, and Tricia Bippus of Lodi, as well as eight grandchildren. His daughter Peggy preceded him in death in 1968. Bob was beloved by his family and friends. He will be missed. Memorial Services will be held on Friday, April 11th at 1 PM at the Daphne-Fernwood Chapel at 301 Tennessee Valley Road in Mill Valley. Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of Marin.

Eleanor Jane Sanders
Passed away on April 1, 2003 after a brief stay in the hospital. Born in Ocheydan, Iowa, she came to California in the late 30s. Mrs. Sanders lived in Marin for over 50 years, most of those spent in Mill Valley. Widowed in 1994, she was married to T.C. Sanders for 54 years. She is survived by a son, Donald Sanders of Kentfield and a daughter, Deborah Poole of Tiburon, and five grandchildren. Mrs. Sanders loved to travel, and enjoyed motorcycling events, boating and water skiing trips well into her 70s. She was a loving mother and grandmother to whom family always came first.

Grete Storck
Passed away on her 88th birthday, April 2, 2003. Although she was small and tiny in size, she was a great lady with a strong mindset and a very big warm heart. Very proud of her heritage, her birthplace the Danish town of Vejle and the country of Denmark could not ask for a more sincere and proud ambassador. A Memorial Service in her honor will be held Sunday, April 13th, at the Aldersley Danish Home in San Rafael at 1:00 PM in Hendrix Hall. Memorial Donations may be made to the Aldersley Endowment or the Danish Soldiers Club.

Aurore Cadden ("Rory") Vaeth
1930 - 2003
Aurore Cadden ("Rory") Vaeth, a pioneer advocate for women with breast cancer in Marin County, died in her Mill Valley home on April 5, 2003. She was 73. After first being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976, Mrs. Vaeth was one of the founding participants in the Marin County "Reach to Recovery" program sponsored by the American Cancer Society. She served as a mentor to women with breast cancer throughout Northern California for a quarter century. Mrs. Vaeth was also one of the first women in the Bay Area to receive a lumpectomy with radiation therapy, as opposed to a radical mastectomy, the standard medical treatment for breast cancer at the time. Mrs. Vaeth and her late husband, Dr. Jerome Vaeth, founded the Annual San Francisco Cancer Symposium, for which she served as an administrator for more than 25 years. Born and raised in British Columbia, Mrs. Vaeth was valedictorian of her high school class at Seton Academy in Vancouver. She later completed her degree from the Vancouver School of Nursing in 1951. She served as a surgical nurse in British Columbia, and later at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she met her future husband. Married in 1953, the couple lived in Savannah, Georgia; Buffalo, New York; Seattle, Washington; Paris, France; and London, England, before settling in the Bay Area. The Vaeths moved to Muir Beach in 1958 and then to Mill Valley in 1961. Mrs. Vaeth served as the company nurse for Pacific Bell in San Francisco in the early 1960s and later as school nurse for Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School. She was also active with the Girl Scouts of America in Mill Valley and was a member, along with her husband, of the Sausalito Yacht Club. The Vaeths were fleet champions of the club in 1963. Mrs. Vaeth was an ardent traveler and recently embarked on family cruises to both Alaska and the Mexican Riviera. Family members recall that she was a firm believer in never ending a vacation without planning the next one. Mrs. Vaeth was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years Dr. Jerome Vaeth. She is survived by her three daughters, Cullyn Vaeth Russell (Michael Russell) of Mill Valley; Patrice Aurore Caetano Vaeth (Raul Caetano) of Dallas, TX; Siri Vaeth Dunn (Geoffrey Dunn) of Santa Cruz, CA; and six grandchildren. A Memorial Rosary will be held Friday, April 11, at 6:15 p.m., at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Mill Valley. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m., also at Mt. Carmel. No flowers by request. Contributions in Mrs. Vaeth's memory may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc., 2672 Bayshore Parkway, Suite 520, Mountain View, CA 94043.

Joseph Velcich
Formerly of San Rafael died in Oakland Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at age 84. He was the husband of Angela Velcich and stepfather of Richard Wogsland. Joseph was one of four children and is survived by his sister Dinka Velcich, uncle of Maurice Velcich, Laura Balde and Tony Velcich. A native of northern Italy, Joe served in the Italian navy for six years. He came to Chicago in 1957 and later to San Francisco where he began a successful career as a chef working at the original Joe's, Vanessi's, and Julius' Castle. Stephen Donald Wamsley
Passed away at home in San Anselmo on Monday, April 7, 2003 at the age of 50. Born in San Francisco on February 27, 1953, Steve was a lifelong Marin County resident, a retired chef and a history buff. He enjoyed golf and playing bridge with friends. We will miss him dearly. Steve is survived by his sisters, Susan Ephraim and Cathy Steidle; a niece Elisabeth Ephraim; two nephews, Christopher and Stuart Steidle; friend and cousin Dianne Rogers; and other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at Keaton's Mortuary, San Rafael on Friday, April 11th, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday, April 12th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There will be a Graveside Service for Steve on Saturday, April 12th at Mt. Lorelle May Burt
Passed away peacefully April 2, 2003. She was born August 1, 1931 in North Dakota to Hugh and Anna Stocks. Lorelle is survived by her children, Sandi Burt of Cameron Park, CA, Terri Burt Friedland of Novato, CA, Michael Burt of Rancho Murrieta, CA, and five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Lorelle raised her children in Marin and Napa Counties and lived in Redding, CA for over 20 years. She had recently relocated to El Dorado Hills with her husband, John McIntosh. Lorelle was known for her love of life, her family and all her animals. She will be dearly missed. A Celebration of Her Life will be held in Cameron Park. Memorial contributions may be made to your local SPCA.

Walter Louis Haderer Sr.
Dr. Walter L. Haderer, 90, peacefully passed away April 5, 2003 at home with his wife, Anita, at his bedside. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his four sons and their families: Walter Haderer, Jr. of Hayward, CA and granddaughters Elaine, Christina and Alexandra; Paul and Linda Haderer of Woodside, CA and grandson Nicholas; Dr. David and Kristine Haderer of Concord, CA and grandchildren Stephanie, Brian, Michael, Sarah and Megan; and Richard and Alissa Haderer of San Carlos, CA. Walter was born in Harvey, Illinois, December 28, 1912. He began playing the violin in elementary school and received his BA in Music from Columbia College, Chicago. He taught in the demonstration school at University of Iowa where he received his MA in Music. Most importantly, that is where he met his beloved wife of 61 years. They were married in Cheyenne, Wyoming while he was serving as a Warrant Officer in the Army, conducting military bands. In 1947, he accepted a teaching position at the University of Oklahoma. He also helped develop the music program at the University Lutheran Chapel. In 1960, Walter received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at USC. The family moved north when he was appointed to an Associate Professorship in Music at San Francisco State University in 1955. He taught Strings, Music Education, supervised student teachers in music, conducted the Symphony Orchestra and String Ensemble and developed the SFSU Suzuki String Program. In 1960s, Walter was instrumental in bringing the Suzuki Method for music training to the United States. After studying with Dr. Suzuki in Matsumoto, Japan, he sponsored several International Suzuki Institutes at SFSU, teaching thousands of teachers and children the Suzuki Method of Talent Education. He continued to serve as the Institute's Director into the late 1980s, teaching grad students and youngsters while semi-retired as Professor Emeritus of Music. He taught at numerous Institutes, served on the original Board of Directors for the Suzuki Association of the Americas for 15 years, and spread the Suzuki Method throughout the country. Soon after coming north, the family became members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlingame. Walter served his God and Church in many capacities including Church Elder, and Director of Music and Choirs for more than thirty years. Richard continued to bring him to choir to sing the praises of the Lord until his health limited his activities two years ago. Walter touched so many people, personally, professionally and in the Spirit of the Lord. He was a soft-spoken man who tried to put the "best construction on everything". Most of all, he will be remembered as a wonderful teacher, a devout servant of the Lord, and as a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Anna B. Sullivan
Passed away on March 27, 2003, in Santa Rosa. Devoted wife of John C. Sullivan for 60 years. Cherished sister of Elizabeth Davenport and the late Guido V. Battaglia. Loving aunt of four nieces and three nephews and the great aunt of eight grandnieces and grandnephews. A native of Lucca, Italy; she was a graduate of Tamalpais High School; and a longtime member of St. Sebastian Church. A Memorial Mass will be offered for Anna at St. Sebastian Church, 373 Bon Air Road, Greenbrae, on Saturday April 12th, at 11:00 AM. Walter S. Bailey
Born Walter Jaeschke, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2003 at age 82. He was born and raised in San Francisco to the late Walter Ernest Jaeschke and the late Helen M. Jaeschke Bailey Gillick (nee Lynch). He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Cobia and worked in San Francisco for the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) -- Local 10 for 37 years. Walter moved to San Anselmo in 1967 and was also a resident of Pollock Pines for the past 25 years. He is survived by his wife, Victorine Bailey of San Anselmo; his daughters, Mary Gaut (Harold) of Sevierville, TN and Valerie Beijen of Corte Madera; a son William Bailey (Kerry) of Sevierville, TN and a stepson Michael McLaughlin (Patricia) of San Francisco. His son Christopher Bailey preceded him in death. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Robert Gaut, Victorine Beijen Coverdale, Laurie Beijen, Melissa Bailey, James Bailey and one great granddaughter, Taylor Coverdale; his sister Marilyn Gilligan (Jim) of Santa Rosa; brother-in-law Andrew Musante (Alice) of San Mateo; sister-in-law Marie Musante of San Bruno and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Friday, April 11, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 3 Oakdale Avenue, Mill Valley, CA. John "Jack" Ryan
September 4, 1924-April 4, 2003
Jack passed away on April 4, 2003 at the age of 78, following complications from surgery for colon cancer. He moved to Auburn with his wife, Joan, in 1998. He was a Native Californian, born in San Rafael, on September 4, 1924. He grew up in Ross and graduated from Tamalpais High School, in Mill Valley, in 1942. He was a proud American who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class. He graduated from USC in 1949 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He retired from GTE Lenkurt in San Carlos in 1980, after 25 years of dedicated service. He lived in San Mateo County for many years before settling in Auburn. He is survived by his wife, Joan, his children Bryce Stein of Sutter Creek, Meghan Napoli of Shingle Springs, Sue Bent of Campbell, and Steve Bent of Burlingame, as well as his grandchildren Jason Stein of Squaw Valley, Chris Fernandez of Redwood City, Dominic Napoli of Chico, and Vanessa Napoli of Shingle Springs. Jack was a devoted family 'gentle' man who was well loved. He will be deeply missed by all. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 10th, 4-7 PM at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way, in Auburn, with Services on Friday, April 11th at 1:30 PM.

Mary Dorothy Piro
Went to her eternal reward on April 3, 2003. She was born in Bisbee, AZ on August 31, 1913, and came to San Francisco at the age of six. She attended St. Peter's School and Lux Business College. In 1936 She married Dominic Piro and together they raised four children. Mary was a kind and loving homemaker. In 1963 they moved to Corte Madera. Mary was the Activity Director at the Nazareth House for eleven years and a member of their auxiliary for thirty-one years. She was a member of St. Sebastians Catholic Church and belonged to the Young at Heart and the Sew and Sews where she helped sew linens for the Church. She had a great zest for life; enjoyed traveling and was friendly and warm to all people. She loved God, her family and her friends. Mary is survived by her sons, Daniel of San Francisco and Hawaii; Robert of Petaluma; Jerry and daughter in law Gail of San Rafael; and daughter Beverly Compagno and son in law Tony of Larkspur. Mary is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; Steve and wife Julie, Mary, Kathleen, Susan, Laurice, Michael, Kimberly, Thomas, Michelle, Brian, Steven, Marc and Pam. She is survived by five great grandchildren Stevie, Gina, Joseph, Matthew and Anna. A Memorial Mass of Celebration and Thanksgiving for Mary's life will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at 11:00 AM at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 373 Bon Air Road, Greenbrae.
