Margaret Patricia Kunkel
Of Marinwood/ Lucas Valley, passed away unexpectedly with the love, prayers, and support of her family on Saturday, May 3rd, 2003 at the age of 64. Margaret was born and raised in Belrose, Long Island, New York. For the past 26 years she created a beautiful home where she and her husband, Thomas, raised their three children, Tom Jr., 35, Margaret, 33, and Annamarie, 22. She also leaves behind her father, George, and her mother, Margaret, and her brother, George Jr. of Wye Mills, Maryland and her sister Helen of Riverhead, Long Island, New York. Margaret was a member of the St. Vincent's Woman's Auxiliary. She loved to garden and simply share special moments with her family and friends. She leaves us with everlasting wisdom, love, and a true passion for life. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 9th, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Vincent's Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memoriam of Margaret P. Kunkel, to St. Vincent's School for Boys at 1 St. Vincent Drive, San Rafael, CA 94903.

Daniel John McCarthy
Passed away on Friday, May 2, 2003 at his home in San Rafael in the arms of his loving wife, Elaine. He was 58. He will be sorely missed by his wife, daughters Michelle McCarthy of San Francisco, Christine Rimer of San Carlos and son-in-law Christopher Rimer. He leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A 4th generation native San Franciscan, Dan attended St. Ignatius High School and University of San Francisco. He proudly served as a Captain in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he received his Jurist Doctorate from San Francisco Law School. Dan retired from Pacific Bell after 30 years of service as a regulatory attorney. He served his community on the President's Advisory Council at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, and on the Boards of the San Francisco YMCA and Marin Catholic High School. It was Dan's sense of humor, his smiling Irish eyes and love of life that brought joy and laughter wherever he went. Even in death, people smile remembering all the wonderful moments shared with him. His profound sense of faith was an inspiration to all whose lives he touched. He was currently studying as a Provisional of the Knights of Malta. Family and friends are invited to remember and celebrate Dan's life at his Funeral Mass to be held on Thursday, May 8th at 10 a.m. at St Raphael's Church at 1104 Fifth Avenue in San Rafael. A Vigil and Rosary will be held Wednesday evening, May 7th at 7 p.m. also at St. Raphael's Church. Marjorie B. (Marge) Callon
Born in Paddockwood, Sasketchewan on the Immaculate Conception, December 8,1921, died at home in Novato April 29, 2003, after a final battle with lung cancer. She is survived by her daughter Patricia Lynne Callon of Spokane, WA, her daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Michael Long of Novato, and her "Furr Babies" Tucker and Elton. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday May 10 at 3:30 PM at Keaton's Redwood Chapel, 1801 Novato Blvd., Novato. Daniel Shelasky
Passed away peacefully on March 23, 2003, at the age of 85, a Novato resident for 52 years. Born in Springfield Mass., he was a concert violinist, making his solo debut at age 14. He attended Julliard, and served in Army radio intelligence in India and Burma during World War II. After living in Petaluma briefly, he moved to Novato and taught violin and guitar full-time since 1959. He played first violin in the Oakland and Santa Rosa Symphonies, and with various chamber groups. He is survived by his wife, Anita; son, Paul Shelasky; daughter, Susan Shelasky Walters; and granddaughter, Rachel Walters. He is also survived by his sister, Muriel Bettigole, of Scottsdale, AZ.; and his brother, George S. Irving, of New York City. No services were held. Donations to the music education fund of choice are preferred. Arrangements by Keaton's Redwood Chapel, Novato.

Burrell Weber
Passed away in Novato on April 28, 2003. Mr. Weber was a retired naval officer originally from St. Louis, MO and was the son of Burrell and Charlotte Weber. His cousins Michelle, Anthony and Patrick Shamus, Michael and Kailey Morarin survive him. A Memorial service will be held at Montgomery Chapel, corner of Richmond and Bolinas, San Anselmo, Monday, May 5, 2003 at 3:00 pm, with a reception following.

Phyllis Oja Jones
Born 1928 in Casper Wyoming, she graduated with degrees in Chemistry from the University of Denver and spent many years with Dow Chemical Co., ending as Technical Director of Cordis Dow Co. She then turned to the humane movement, becoming president of first, Marin Humane Society and then, Sonoma's. Widowed early by the accidental death of Dr. Raymond Oja, she married Ray Jones 33 years ago. Phyllis was a member of the Rotary Club of Marin Evening, the Sausalito Woman's Club and several gun clubs. Along with her husband, of Sausalito, Phyllis leaves a sister Elizabeth Bockstahler of Colorado Springs and a brother Rick Beyer of Ogden. At her request there will be no service and contributions to the Humane Society of Sonoma County (P.O. Box 1296 Santa Rosa) are preferred.

Joseph Jeffrey Nail
On Wednesday, April 30, 2003, Joseph Jeffrey Nail passed away suddenly at the age of 58. He is survived by his loving family: wife, Donna Marshall Nail; son, Jeffrey Bradford Nail; daughters, Meagan Marshall Partee, Jennifer Petrusich and Stacey Nail; brothers, Ken and Brad Nail; and grandchildren, Benjamin, Thomas and Lucas. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war he returned to graduate from San Jose State University. Joe was a General Contractor, and had worked for Partee Construction for the past 20 years. Joe had a great zest for life. He loved golf, baseball, boating, skiing and above all else, spending good times with friends and family. He also fancied himself a gourmet chef. Joe both loved big and lived big. His passing will be heavy to bear and his absence will be so marked by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, a college fund has been established for his two teenage children. Frieda Noll
Died in her Novato home at the age of 72 on March 24, 2003. Frieda is survived by her daughter Stacey Dietrick, her sons Rick MacCarthy and Bruce MacCarthy, her daughter-in-law Becky MacCarthy, her son-in-law Jim Dietrick, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Frieda was predeceased by her daughter Nancy MacCarthy in 1994. Frieda retired after 27 years with the Marin County Probation Department. She was an avid traveler with a great love for the Hispanic culture. She lived for three years in Mexico after retirement. Frieda had a creative flair that showed in the way she lived and that touched all those around her. She was a brave and open-minded pursuer of life that inspired others to do the same. She greatly enjoyed gardening and quilting and excelled at both. The theatre and movies were her refuge from the world. She was a truly unique and charismatic lady who will be greatly missed by the many who loved her. There will be a Memorial to celebrate Frieda's life at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8th, 2003. Carolyn M. Ober
Of Mill Valley has passed away of cancer at the age of 57. A highly regarded marketing research consultant in the Bay Area from 1989-2002, Ms. Ober's clients included Apple, Chevy's, Clorox, Computerland, Del Monte, Nestle, Qualcomm, and Siemans Corp. She was also a partner to U.S. Marketing Services. Prior to that, Ms. Ober worked in San Francisco for Hills Bros. and Hoefer, Dieterich & Brown, after working for Chicago's Campbell-Mithun Advertising Agency. Born in Chicago, Ms. Ober was a graduate of Northwestern and was active in its alumni association. She was a member of the AMA and a volunteer at Suicide Prevention and St. Anthony's. Her sister, Cynthia Ober, of Chicago, survives her. A Memorial will be held Saturday at Noon at the United Methodist Church, 410 Sycamore, Mill Valley.

Bianca Rossi
Age 78, of San Rafael, passed away April 17, 2003 at Pine Ridge Care Center in San Rafael, California. Private Cremation Services have been provided by Mount Tamalpais Mortuary, 2500 5th Avenue, San Rafael, CA 415-459-2500.

Ingrid Britta Turenne
Born in Sweden, she passed away on April 24, 2003 and is survived by two children and five granddaughters. A Service will be held at Open Door Christian Church, 1519 Novato Blvd. on Sunday, May 4th, 2003 at 4 p.m.

Myrna A. Durbin
Died peacefully at home at the age of 89 years. She was a resident of San Rafael for 56 years. Myrna was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She is survived by two sons and a daughter, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services will be held at Mount Tamalpais on May 3, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Mount Tamalpais Mortuary & Cemetery

Michael Mangini
One week shy of his 92nd birthday, Michael Mangini of San Rafael, CA, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2003, surrounded by his family. Born on May 5, 1911, in New Haven, CT, he was the last child of Luigi and Angelina Mangini. At age 18, he joined the U.S. Army Cavalry Artillery Unit. He signed on for 30 years as a career soldier in the Regular Army in 1932. After acceptance to San Francisco Police Academy, he joined an all Irish cadet class where at roll call he was affectionately called " O' Mangini", to which he responded with his usual laughter. He advanced to the Army's Criminal Investigation Division (CID) where he often worked undercover. He was stationed on military posts around the world. Before World War II, he was assigned to Hawaii after processing through Ft. McDowell on Angel Island. Other posts include the Presidio; Governor's Island, NY; Germany; and Japan. Upon his retirement as Chief Warrant Officer-4 in June 1962, he enrolled in what was then known as Sonoma State College. Completing his BA and Elementary Teaching Credential in 1965, he brought his love of learning and knowledge to McKinley Elementary School in Petaluma, where he taught 5th and 6th grades for the next 15 years. He retired at the age 70 in 1981. During retirement, Michael pursued his lifelong passion for golf at Mare Island in Vallejo, his interest in investing, as well as his desire for knowledge. Despite spending six years in a Catholic orphanage during his youth, Michael had two distinguished careers, educated himself on investing, and retained an uplifting sense of humor until his passing. Referred to by family and friends as " a grand and honorable gentleman ", he will be remembered for his sharp mind and fierce independence. It is Michael's sense of independence, dignity, and humor that will be remembered by those whose lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Wegesser Mangini, his daughters Marietta Mangini Rodriguez (Sostenes Rodriguez), and Ann Marie Mangini, all of Modesto, CA; his devoted son, Mike, of San Rafael; his grandsons Paul and Ramon Rodriguez, and great-grandson Owen Paul Rodriguez, all of Modesto. Vigil Services will be held at Keaton's Mortuary, 1022 E Street, San Rafael, Friday, May 2nd, at 7 PM. The Funeral Mass will be Saturday, May 3rd, 2 PM at St. Isabella's Church, Terra Linda, San Rafael. interment at San Joaquin National Cemetery will be private. Virginia Nordstrom
Passed away in Greenbrae on April 17, 2003. Loving mother of Soren Nordstrom and his wife Tanya of Lagunitas, CA. Dedicated grandmother of Amanda and Mikel Nordstrom also of Lagunitas. Dear sister of Stanley Swann and his wife Janaan of Colorado and Sally Stuart of Woodland Hills, CA. Survived by her nieces and nephews: Diane, Susie, Pam, Mike and Jeff and many wonderful friends. Virginia was born in Colorado and lived in Marin County for 43 years. She was a school teacher for 30 years in San Francisco. Her hobbies were gardening, playing cards, and she especially liked to travel. She was a member of the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club, 1 West Blithedale Ave., Mill Valley, CA. Robert W. Whitermore
October 10, 1928 - April 22, 2003
Passed away peacefully at home with his family on April 22, 2003. Bob is survived by his devoted wife Marie. A nurturing and loving father to daughters Marie Weirick, Dawn O'Neill (Kevin O'Neill), sons Kenneth Whitermore and Ronald Whitermore, and granddaughters, Piper and Katie O'Neill. Preceded in death by a loving son, Douglas Whitermore. Bob was born in New York, served in the Marine Corps and moved his family to California in 1962. He sold real estate in Marin since 1978 and owned his own company, Ultra Special Properties. He will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives were touched by him. Benjamin J. Baum
A leading member of the San Francisco investment community, died yesterday at California Pacific Medical Center. He was 91 years old. A third generation San Franciscan, Mr. Baum attended Madison Grammar School, Lowell High School and the University of California at Berkeley. In 1935, he joined the investment banking firm of Stone & Youngberg where he served as managing partner for thirty-five years. During his 65-year association with the firm, he saw it grow to become one of California's preeminent public financing institutions and the state's leading underwriter of local government bonds. In 1981, the San Francisco Bond Club named him Investment Banker of the Year. Mr. Baum moved to San Anselmo in 1950 where he maintained a home until 1998. Over his lifetime, Mr. Baum contributed much of his free time to numerous charitable and non profit activities. He was a founder and member of the Board of Trustees of Marin Country Day School, a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Home for the Aged, an honorary member of the State of California County Treasurer's Association and member and past president of the Concordia-Argonaut Club. Mr. Baum is survived by his son Richard Baum, daughter Susanne Baum, and six grandchildren, Daniel Baum, Alex Podell, Rachel Baum, Niclole Podell, Abigail Baum and Zachary Baum. Memorial services will be held at Congregation Emanu El, Arguello and Lake Streets, on Monday, June 30, 2003 at 11 am. Donations may be made to Congregation Emanu El or Marin Country Day School.
