Rosemary Barnes Atkins, 89, died July 30, 2002, in Peoria, Arizona. She was born August 16, 1912, in New York City, to architect Roderic Barbour Barnes and Rose Marie Naething Barnes. Her early years were spent in New York, Long Island, and Washington, Connecticut. She attended Montessori School, Wykeham Rise School for Girls, and Bryn Mawr College. Rosemary met California artist Alan Atkins when both were students at the Yale University School Of Fine Arts. They were married June 24, 1932, in Washington, Connecticut, and spent a year abroad before returning to Alan's home in Oakland, California. They had four children: Eleanore, David (who died in infancy), Paul, and Katherine. In 1941, the family moved to Marin County, California, purchasing a home designed and built for them by Rosemary's father. Rosemary's life was centered upon a strong religious faith and spirituality. Her many interests included art, music, gardens, dolls, genealogy, and a variety of decorative crafts. Her love of travel led to a year-long trip to Europe by freighter with her daughter Kathy in 1961-62. She also pursued a degree in Scandinavian Studies at the University of California-Berkeley, graduating with honors, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1965. Alan retired in 1975. He and Rosemary moved to the small town of Arnold, Calaveras County. After Alan's death in 1990, Rosemary moved to Sun City West, Arizona. Rosemary is survived by two sisters, three children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. On June 24, 2003, family members attended a quiet graveside service at historic Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford, Connecticut, where Rosemary was buried with Alan, her parents, and her grandparents. Rosemary was the center of a loving family. We miss her greatly, as do her many friends. Contributions in her memory, if desired, may be made to the Humane Society of the United States.

Nora Pomeroy Plant
Age 81, of San Francisco, died at home on July 23rd, 2003, lovingly surrounded by her family, friends, and her dog Honey Bun. Nora was the wife and companion of the late David N. Plant. She leaves behind brother Nelson Pomeroy of Sun Valley, Idaho, daughter Susan (Derek) Arndt of Kirkland, Washington, son Tom (Debbie) Plant of Canyon Lake, California, and grandchildren Jessica Arndt of San Francisco and Thomas Arndt of Kirkland, Washington. Her eldest son, Peter Nelson Plant, predeceased her. An avid supporter of the San Francisco Symphony, as well as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Nora made music with all parts of her life. As a voracious reader who delighted in words, Nora was rarely without a scrabble board, crossword puzzle, or a good book. She was a perfect trip taker and an even better trip planner, and loved nothing more than contemplating distant lands from the fireside comfort of her living room in Inverness, California. More than anything, Nora made people feel at home, and she kept the chairs around her filled with friends and family. She is best known for her delightfully sparkling wit and her twinkly blue eyes, and is most missed for the loyalty and love she shared with all. Any contributions in her name are welcome at the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, or the Fund for Public Education. "The wonder of the world, the beauty and the power, the shapes of things, their colors, lights, and shades; these I saw. Look, ye, also while life lasts."
