George Roger Emehiser
George Roger Emehiser died unexpectedly on August 9, 2003 in Novato at the age of 63. George was born in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho on November 3, 1939. He married his wife Joyce in 1962 and they moved their young family to Marin County in 1967. George worked for the City of San Rafael for thirty years and retired to Florida with his wife Joyce. He loved plants, especially raising them. George was a true humanitarian, he was very kind to those with great misfortune. He is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Joyce of Titusville, FL; his son, Roger of Novato; his brother, David Emehiser of Santa Rosa; and his sister, Dixie Galvez of Apple Valley, CA. Friends are invited to a graveside service at 2:00 PM on Thursday August 28 at Valley Memorial Park, 650 Bugeia Lane, Novato. Memorial contributions are preferred to your favorite charity. Alan Patrick Fredrick Murphy
December 7, 1921 - August 22, 2003
Alan passed away peacefully early Friday morning after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer and heart disease. He was 81 years old. Alan was born in India, the eldest son of Terrence and Grace Walsh. He joined the British Army as a Trumpeter in the Royal Artillery in 1937. He served in India, The North West Frontier and all over the Middle East. His regiment was part of the British 8th Army and took part in action at El Alamein and Monte Casino. He was proud to serve during WWII under Montgomery. He returned to India in 1945 and was posted to the United Kingdom in 1947 where he met his beloved wife Jean. During a career that spanned almost forty years he served in Hong Kong, Korea, Suez, Cyprus, Germany and Northern Ireland. He was decorated eleven times and was one of few soldiers to be awarded the North West Frontier Medal. Alan retired from the Army in 1976 having attained the rank of Major (Quarter Master). He and Jean retired to Wales in 1976 and lived in a two hundred year old cottage before moving to Novato in 1987 to be near his beloved only daughter and her family. Alan was a keen and gifted sportsman, particularly on the golf course. He proudly wore a tie which is awarded by the Royal and Ancient Golf Society for achieving four "holes in one". He also played field hockey and tennis for the British Army. He is survived by Jean, his devoted wife of fifty five years, daughter Geraldine Lopez, son-in-law Arsenio, granddaughter Jessica and grandson Nick; also by his younger brother Kevin, who lives in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, UK. His sister Claire preceded him in 1982, she lived in Stockton, CA. In his own words "He has gone to the big parade ground in the sky". He was a unique character with a great sense of humour and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends both in Britain and his new home, California. A Mass to celebrate the life of Alan will be held on Wednesday August 27th at St. Vincent's Church in Marinwood at 2:00 PM. Following the service, reception will be held at the home of his daughter. Michael A. 'Mickey' Uhl
Died in Napa Sunday August 24, 2003 at the age of 44. He was the loving son of Virginia Holmes Nelson of San Rafael and dear brother of Charles Uhl of San Anselmo and Terrence Uhl of Fairfax. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins in southern California. Mickey was born in New York City and came to Marin at the age of 4 months. He was a carpenter for over 25 years and was a graduate of Drake High School class of '77. Mickey enjoyed motorcycle riding and was well known and liked around Marin County. A private Memorial Mass will be celebrated and inurnment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery San Rafael. Memorial contributions may be made to Ritter House. Alice Zimmerman
In Greenbrae on August 25, 2003, at age 76. Dearly beloved wife for 46 years of Arthur Zimmerman; loving mother of Steven & Judy Zimmerman, Beverly Zimmerman and Nancy and Richard Pechner; cherished and devoted grandmother of Joy Zimmerman and her fiance' Jason Walker, Jacob and Joshua Zimmerman, and Madeleine, Sofia, and Tobias Pechner. Dear sister-in-law of Esther and Herbert Ososke and Harold and Norma Zimmerman. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews. Alice was also loved by her devoted caregivers. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27th at the Sha'arei Shalom Section of Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery, 2500 - 5th Ave., San Rafael under the direction of Sinai Memorial Chapel. Contributions to the Jewish Community High School of the Bay, 1835 Ellis St., SF/CA 94115 preferred.

Josefa Diaz
Passed away peacefully Friday, August 22nd, 2003 in San Rafael, CA at the age of 102 years. Josefa was born in San Dulce, Puerto Rico on February 4, 1901. Preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Catalino Diaz, and daughter Josephine Diaz. Josefa is survived by her daughter's Daisy Savoy, of San Rafael and her two children David Savoy, of San Francisco; Joan Phillips, of Oakland; daughter Catalina Santiago and husband Jose of Novato; Catalina's daughter Angel Jones of Sacramento and their daughter Jacqueline Santiago, of Novato, and her four great grandchildren Ashley, Kyle, Diego, Jesse, and two great great grandchildren Fina, and Blanca. Josefa was attending St. Isabella of San Rafael. She was a seamstress for over 40 years in New York City. She loved to travel and go gambling. She will be missed by her Family and friends at Senior Access in Novato. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Rafael Mission Catholic Church Tuesday, August 26th, 2003 at 11:00 AM. A private family gathering to follow. Arrangements under the direction of ABBY CHAPEL OF THE REDWOODS MORTUARY 6250 State Farm Drive, Rohnert Park, CA 415-331-1982.

George E. McKenna
December 7, 1914 - August 18, 2003
George was born in Oakland, CA, raised in San Francisco and was a resident of Marin County since 1946. He graduated from Stanford University in 1938 and subsequently received and MBA from Golden Gate University. He was drafted in 1942 and received a direct commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Phillipines in 1948. He married Helen Elizabeth Davis in 1942 in a ceremony at Stanford Chapel. He was recalled to active duty for two years during the Korean war in 1950-1952. He retired as a Colonel in the Air Force Reserve in 1974. Upon graduation from Stanford, he was employed by Crown Zellerbach Corporation. He retired in 1978, after 39 years, as Vice President and Treasurer of the Crown Zellerbach Foundation. He served on the Kentfield District School Board, including a term as President. He also served as President of the Resident's Council at the Tamalpais in Greenbrae. George is survived by his wife Helen (Betty) McKenna, son James Mckenna and wife Kristel, daughter Jayne (Mckenna) Baiyor, husband Joe and twin granddaughters Abigail and Elizabeth Baiyor, to whom he was very special. They particularly enjoyed his unexpected sense of humor and ever-present smile. They proudly display his paintings in their home. He will be greatly missed. Family services only. Gifts to a charitable organization of choice are suggested in lieu of flowers.

Joaquin Frank Almada
Passed away in San Francisco on August 20, 2003 at the age of 90. Beloved husband of Stella Almada; loving father of JoAnn (Bill) Lockhart, Charlene (Jim) Shaw, Carol (Jim) Janakes and David (Ann) Almada; cherished grandfather of Chris (Cheri) Hershwitzky, Jennifer Janakes, Joseph (Rachael) Janakes and great grandfather of Caleb Janakes; Devoted son of Manuel P. and Mary (deBorba) Almada. Preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Manuel Almada, Mary Souza, Clara McAuley, Anthony Almada and Helen Almada. Born July 13, 1913 on Deer Island in Novato, CA in the family home where his five siblings were also born. Descendent of early dairy farmers of Marin County, Joaquin and family grew up in Novato and Petaluma. He moved to S.F. in 1942 where he and Stella married. In 1943 he served in WWII stationed at Biloxi, Miss. and later India. Returned to S.F. after the war and purchased a home in S.F. in 1947. Retired from Marin Dell Dairy after 28 years of faithful service. He had jobs ranging from Silva Grocery store clerk to Richfield Gasoline attendant and the dairy company. Enjoyed gardening, reading travel-logs and Marin County current events. Member of the Novato Historical Society. Family and friends may visit on Monday August 25, 2003 at 3:00 PM and are invited to attend the Vigil Service 7:00 PM at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Ave. Daly City, CA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 10:00 AM at St. Philips the Apostle Church, 725 Diamond St. San Francisco, CA. interment will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 304 Magnolia Ave. Petaluma, CA. John D. Combs
Passed away on August 17, 2003 at the age of 79, in Santa Rosa. Formerly resident of Marin County for 30 years. Born in Mena, Ark., on February 7, 1924. Member of the LDS church for over 40 years. Survived the sinking of The Lexington on May 8, 1942. Beloved husband and father is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sandra, son Steven Combs, daugther Lindy Johnson and two other sons. Memorial Service will be Saturday, August 30, 2003 at 3:00 PM at LDS church 220 North San Pedro Rd, corner of woodoak, in San Rafael.

Virginia T. Desin
Beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Born December 1934 in San Francisco, passed away peacefully at her home in Larkspur on August 15, 2003. Survived by her husband of 45 years, Mel Desin; loving mother of Gigi Phillips, Cheryl Untermann and Nick Desin; much loved grandmother of Daisy Phillips and Rylee and Carly Desin; adored mother in-law of Joanne Desin, Dennis Untermann and Gene Phillips. She has given us all her sense of strength, beauty and style. Friends are invited to a celebration of her life in her beautiful garden at 11 Wiltshire Avenue, Larkspur, at 11:00am on Saturday, September 6th, 2003. Grace Stone
July 19, 1920-August 9, 2003
Grace Stone passed away Saturday, August 9, 2003 at the age of 83 in Novato following a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in the Philippines on July 19, 1920, Grace was the daughter of Charles D. Ayton and Ethel L. Ayton. As a young child she came to San Francisco. Raised in the City by the Bay, Grace graduated from George Washington High School and traveled frequently by ferry to Marin County to play tennis in Woodacre. As a 17- year old school girl she walked across the newly constructed Golden Gate Bridge on opening day in 1937. Grace worked as a bookkeeper for her father in San Francisco when she met and married Gerald "Jerry" Stone. In World War II, Jerry joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Chico, California. While Jerry served in the military, Grace gave birth to two daughters, Susan and Linda. After the War the family moved to Marin County and lived in San Rafael where Jerry established a career in the real estate industry, soon opening his own firm, Jerry Stone Realty. Grace obtained a California Real Estate Brokers license and was the firm's bookkeeper. In the early 80's Grace and Jerry both joined Bud Marchant and Associates where they remained until the early 90's. Her beloved husband Jerry preceded Grace in death on October 31, 1998. Active on the tennis courts of the Marin Golf and Country Club until her late 70's, Grace was an original member of the Rafael Racquet Club in San Rafael. Besides tennis, her passions were her family especially grandchildren Patrick Meraz, a Kansas City real estate broker and Grace Meraz, a third grade teacher in Santa Clara. She particularly enjoyed gardening, always using cut flowers from her own yard to decorate her home. Grace was an avid fan of the 49ers and Giants, and loved caring for her dog. Besides her two grandchildren, daughters, Susan Fye of Visalia and Linda Wilson of Forestville in Sonoma County, survive Grace. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Place, Suite 1400, New York, New York, 10122 (800-873-9598). A Memorial Service will be held for Grace on Saturday, August 30, 2003 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the Marin Golf and Country Club in Novato.

Cary James Grime
Born May 11, 1956 died the afternoon of August 19, 2003. Grime a student of San Rafael High School Class of '74 attended Butte Jr. College and later the Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He continued his music dream, working as a sound Engineer and Music Publisher in Studio City, CA. and South Lake Tahoe. Returning to San Rafael, Cary formed the band "The Kynd". Cary was the lead singer, keyboardist and songwriter. After concluding his performance career Grime continued in the music entertainment industry founding the Marin Music Publishing and Recording Studio of San Rafael. Cary is survived by his wife Liza 45, and the three children, Lindsay 19, Logan 16, and Noah 14. Parents Robert and June Grime of Zephyr Cove, NV, his brother Luther Grime of El Dorado CA, sister Mary McDonald of Wasilla, AK and his sister Colette Kinder of South Lake Tahoe, CA. The Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church on the 5th Street in downtown San Rafael on Sunday the 24th of August. A private reception for family and friends will follow at the family residence in Terra Linda. Please send your concerns to the Human Rights Commission in Washington DC and donations to your favorite charity.
