Merritt Arthur Robinson
July 15, 1930 - July 25, 2003
Longtime Sleepy Hollow resident, Merritt Robinson, died on July 25, 2003 due to complications from a rare form of dementia (with Lewy Bodies). He is survived by his wife Robin, with whom he enjoyed nearly 50 years of marriage; children Bruce and Jan Robinson of Elk Grove, Brian and Nita Robinson of Novato, Peggy and Jim Phelps of Novato, Dale and Diana Robinson of Petaluma; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Merritt also leaves behind siblings Ned and Mardy Robinson of Lafayette, Carolyn and Richard Storer of Auburn, and Ingrid Robinson of the Toronto area. Merritt was born in Oakland to Bestor and Florence Breed Robinson. He will always be remembered as a gentle, kind man who placed family and community first. He led Sierra Club Burro trips for more than a decade, teaching his children and numerous families about the wilderness. As Boy Scout Master, he continued to share his love for the outdoors, helping the boys and their families make their own kayaks for river trips, and sleeping bags for the 50-mile High Sierra backpack trips. He and his brother Ned enjoyed climbing the Matterhorn during their college years, and later trekking together in Nepal in 1968. He fought to protect the beauty of Marin County as a member of many commissions and committees, including the Marin County Parks and Cultural Commission, Open Space Committee, Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Point Reyes National Seashore Citizen's Advisory Commission (founding member), Marin Conservation League, and Marin Municipal Water District Board member. He enjoyed leading the Marin Human Race, playing his bagpipes to start off the runners. Donating blood was important to Merritt, giving more than 175 pints. Robinson was very involved with his church and the Cursillo Movement. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master's degree in business from Stanford University. He developed many friendships as a member of the Cal Crew team and ATO fraternity. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. Robinson married 1953. Prior to establishing his own creative engineering and consulting firm, Robinson Engineering, he worked for Kimball-Schmidt Manufacturing and Jacuzzi Pumps. Specializing in plastics, his creations and designs included the third rail cover for BART, crew shells, water and snow skis, and the rollout mechanism for the stadium seats at Candlestick Park. As a hobby, he made cabernet sauvignon and merlot wines, which he loved to share at special occasions. He designed and built his home in Sleepy Hollow at the age of 28. He later became President of the Sleepy Hollow Home Owners Association. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, driving the Oregon Trail and exploring the southwest. At the age of 63, he and Robin climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. In the following years, they traveled to the Holy Lands, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand. He seemed to have an answer for almost everything and for those things he didn't know, he worked to discover (or invent) a solution. He will be deeply missed. A celebration of his life will be held at the San Anselmo First Presbyterian Church at 72 Kensington Road on August 18th at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, North Bay Chapter, at 4340 Redwood Highway in San Rafael, or to the San Anselmo First Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden.
