Viola Agnes Rutledge
Viola passed away peacefully at her home on August 7, 2003. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 8, 1930. She is survived by her loving daughter Nani Coyle and her husband James Coyle, her granddaughters Tanya Duckcett, Keilah and Jenna Coyle and Leah Tanner, her brothers Douglas and Paul Chang and their wives Rosie and Helene and her sister Momi, her daughter-in-law Birgitt Tanner, many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her caring husband David Rutledge, her devoted son Leland Tanner and loving daughter Toni Tanner. Viola moved to Lucas Valley in 1967 where she made her home and raised her children. She most recently worked at Macy's Department Store in Terra Linda. She will be missed by her many friends. The family would like to give special thanks to Lisa Ingram and Laura Koeler of Hospice of Marin for making her final days comfortable. The family is having a private Burial and hopes friends will attend a Memorial on Monday, August 11, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at Lucas Valley Community Center, 1201 Idylberry Road. John William Thompson, Ph.D.
San Rafael, California age 57, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Human Factors, Inc. and Founder and Chairman of the Board of Acumen International, Inc., passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at his second home in Truckee-Tahoe, California. He was born October 14, 1945 in Hurricane, Utah, a son of Thomas Thurman and Lula Brinkerhoff Thompson of Virgin, Utah. He married Jennifer Gibson. To this union was born a son, Thomas. They later divorced. John married Marsha Warner and to this union was born a daughter, Jessica. They later divorced. He married Liese Keon and they later divorced. On September 14, 1991, John married Pamela Williams at their home in Nicasio, California. John was in the educational field and delivered educational programs to well over 100,000 key executives and senior management of Fortune 500 companies. John held numerous management positions and taught in the College of Business at Utah State University and the University of Oregon. One of his most treasured accomplishments was the development of a software company, focused on the application of expert-based computer technology to management and leadership assessment and development. His degrees include a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, an M.B.A. in Management Theory, and a Ph.D. in Communication Theory and Organizational Psychology. He was a published author and is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Business. John was a student of life and loved great food, great wine, and great music. Surviving family include his: wife, Pamela, of Nicasio, CA; son, Thomas Ward Thompson, of Hurricane, UT; daughter, Jessica Elizabeth Thompson, of San Rafael, CA; mother, Lula (Raymond) Maloney, of Virgin, UT; two sisters, Nancy Thomas, of Novato, CA, and Ruth (Bill) Riley, of Eureka and Provo, UT; a brother, James (Judy) Thompson, of San Rafael, CA; nine nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial Services will be held Monday, August 11, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hurricane Valley Mortuary, 140 N. Main St., Hurricane, UT. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., prior to services, at the Mortuary. interment will be in the family plot at the Virgin Pioneer Cemetery. Geza Miklos Vince Baka
5 April 1924 - 5 August 2003
Geza Baka passed away Tuesday at Kaiser Hospital in Terra Linda. He was born and grew up in Mezhegyes, Hungary. A 1944 graduate of the Hungarian Military Academy, he served in the Railway Engineers. Upon earning his Civil Engineering degree from the Technical University of Budapest in 1948, he fled communism, eventually emigrating to Australia. After a stint cutting sugar cane and a year in New Guinea surveying the Port Moresby water system, Geza worked in the Queensland and New South Wales highway departments, marrying Sheelagh Ann Stevenson on 2 March 1957 in Sydney. From 1958 to 1963 their growing family lived in Toronto, where his engineering work contributed to the St. Lawrence Seaway. Following two years in Chicago, he got a job with Bechtel doing reinforced concrete design for BART, including the Montgomery Station. In 1969 he began work with the Army Corps of Engineers; one project was a bridge near Lake Sonoma. Geza finished his career with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, inspecting dams throughout Northern California. In new life he joins his parents, Geza and Ilona Baka, and his son John, who died in 1995. He is survived by his sister Maria "Marika" Baka; his wife Sheelagh Baka; their son Gregory, his wife Cheryl and two sons; their daughter-in-law Karen and son; their daughter Maureen, her husband Daniel Ruble, and five children; and their daughter Julia Davey, her husband James, and four children. A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, 11 August 2003 at St. Isabella's Church in San Rafael, where he was a parishioner since 1965. His ashes will be Interred at Mt. John Leverington
Passed away peacefully at home with his family on August 4, 2003. A loving husband of 43 years to the late Agnes Leverington, beloved father of Jean Jones, Linda Braun, Julie Lim, and Janet Thormod, cherished "Opa" to eight grandchildren. Born in the Netherlands on June 5th, 1918, John moved to California in 1947. He enjoyed his beautiful garden, traveling, and service to his community. He cherished time spent with his loving family and his dearest friend Corry from the Netherlands. Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service Monday, August 11, 2003 at 11:00 A.M. at Russell & Gooch Funeral Chapel, Mill Valley. Henry Clarkson Scott
Age 74, a resident of San Anselmo, died peacefully July 6, 2003, surrounded by his family. The cause of death was cancer. Henry was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but he grew up on eastern Long Island. There he began his lifelong love of the outdoors, encouraged by his uncle, an enthusiastic birder. Music became another passion of Henry's as he grew up. He played the tuba in the high school band, and he loved to sing. After he graduated from Stanford, Henry began his teaching career at San Francisco State. Then a speech he heard President Kennedy give inspired him to join the Peace Corps. For over two years, Henry and his wife Cynthia and their children Molly, Katie, and Pete, lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia while Henry was Deputy Director of the Peace Corps program in that country. It was a high point in all their lives. After Ethiopia, Henry helped found a new branch of the State University of New York ( at Old Westbury). In 1970, he moved west to become Dean and Student Advocate at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia. There he married Catherine. They had three children, Chloe, Will and Sam, who live in Lagunitas. Henry once said, "What I enjoy most is being a father!" His six children survive him, as do his wife Caroline Helmuth and his brother Tom. He had seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Club, the American Friends Service Committee, or the charity of your choice.

Jacquelyn Kay Skrobis
Born in Konowa OK January 31, 1931. Died in a tragic traffic accident August 5, 2003. A long time Bay Area resident, she moved to Marin Co. 19 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Skrobis a local contractor in 1996. Jackie devoted her life to her family. She will be greatly missed by her two brothers Ken Collins of San Rafael and Jim Collins of Greenbrae. Her three nieces Nikki Maida of San Rafael, Toni Church of Guerneville, CA and Kay Niles of Oklahoma. interment of her ashes and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

John Albert Walters
"His eye is on the sparrow..."
Born on May 1, 1923 in Olathe, Kansas, John Walters of San Anselmo died on August 4, 2003. He received his BA from S.F. State University in 1949 and his MA in Education from the University of Kansas City in 1950. John served with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. John was described as a gentleman and a gentle man. His passion for music and the environment were foremost in his life. He lived by the statement that all should "leave light footprints on this earth." Because of his desire for the ecological balance of the world, John was involved in many environmental issues in Marin. His passion began with the saving and preservation of the Tiburon ridgeline. In 1986 he received the Outstanding Service Award from the Nature Conservancy. John also received a commendation from the MMWD for his work on the Watershed Citizen's Advocacy Committee in the preservation of Mt. Tamalpais. Other important environmental projects included the Marin salmon restoration, the Corte Madera Creek Watershed restoration, and the restoration of Sleepy Hollow Creek at Drake H.S. The Bacich Upland restoration project, which he initiated and sustained for 16 years, was a particular favorite, in which he took 3rd grade and Kindergarten students from Bacich School for nature walks. John was active with the Environmental Forum of Marin, the CA Native Plant Society, and the San Anselmo Open Space Committee. He was also a member of the Sierra Club, Audubon Society, and the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT). His most recent project was volunteering as a naturalist for the Sorich Ranch Park project. John was a landscape contractor and nurseryman from 1950 until his retirement in 1986, living in Mill Valley and Lake county. He was an active member of Marin Lutheran Church. He sang with the church choir and with the Marin College Community Chorus, taking two tours with them to Europe. He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 56 years, his two sons Mark Walters of Santa Rosa and Philip Walters of Terra Linda, his daughter Anne Wilhite of Phoenix, AZ, five grandchildren, one brother, and one sister. Memorial Service will be held at Marin Lutheran Church, 649 Meadowsweet Dr. In Corte Madera, at 2:00 PM on August 21st, 2003. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the San Anselmo Open Space 459-6973, MALT, or Marin Lutheran Church. "...and He watches over me."

Paul Bucher
Passed away suddenly, Sunday, August 3, 2003 at the age of 74. At his side was Teresa, his beloved wife of 31 years. Paul was born in Alsace, France where as a young man he served an arduous apprenticeship to become a master baker and maker of fine chocolates. With his mother & father he moved to Argentina in the 1950's and created two very successful businesses. There he met and married Teresa. In 1976 Paul and Teresa came to the United States and established Bucher's Patisserie in Novato where they soon had an enthusiastic and loyal following of customers and friends. After 17 years as owners of this successful business, they retire to Argentina in 2000. This year after touring Europe for three months, Paul and Teresa came back to Marin County in July for an extended vacation of visiting friends and enjoying walks in the woods and hills of Marin which they loved. Paul's passing will be mourned by his friends in Marin County, his relatives in France and Argentina and many professional bakers in Europe who owe their skills to his training and encouragement. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 14, 2003 at St. Patrick's Church, 114 King Street, Larkspur. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Paul's memory to the American Heart Association.

Edwin A. Garcia
Passed away in Cloverdale on August 1, 2003. He was the dear husband for 66 years to Virgie Garcia of Kentfield. Father of the late Mark Garcia. Caring grandfather of Nanette Garcia-Metcalfe and her husband Rich, and Katie Garcia, all of Petaluma. Great grandfather of Bryan, Stephanie and Joe Patterson and Brandon and Aaron Metcalfe, also of Petaluma. Brother of Helen Eugene of Fremont and the late Frank and George Garcia. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was born in San Rafael on March 21, 1915 to Emily (Machado) and Frank Garcia. For over 50 years he commuted to San Francisco where he was the supervisor of the accounting department at Metropolitan Life. He and Virgie had moved to Cloverdale within the last 18 months. His favorite pastime was deer hunting in Ignacio with his friends, working in his garden and clam digging. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Sunday, August 10, 2003 at 1:00 PM at PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Magnolia Avenue & Keokuk Street, Petaluma, CA. Robert J. Guild
Kentfield Contractor, age 43
It is with much love and great sadness that the family of Rob Guild announces the end of his full and inspirational life. Rob was raised in Kentfield, attending St. Anselm's School and Marin Catholic High School. As a child he was passionate about baseball and a respected player. He attended the University of Santa Clara on an academic scholarship also playing baseball for the University. Rob was an entrepreneur, starting his first business in high school, installing hot tubs and designing decks. He worked for Chuck Melin General Contractor for several years eventually becoming a licensed contractor. Rob was respected by clients and architects for his craftsmanship, honesty and sense of design. Rob loved fishing and boating. He was a member of the Loch Lomond Yacht Club and a long time member of the Marin Builders Association. Rob was an inspiration for all those who knew him, his quick wit and compassion will always be with us. His love for his children was insurmountable. Rob is survived by his best friend and partner, Suzy Guild, his loving children Makayla and Willie Guild, sisters Donna Broughan of Larkspur and Liz Adams of Forestville, many cousins, nephews, nieces and countless friends. He was preceded in death by parents Don and Nancy Guild. A celebration of Rob's life will be held Saturday, August 9, 2003 at 2:00 pm. St. John's Episcopal Church, 14 Lagunitas Road, Ross. Helder Rocha
In loving memory of our beloved Helder, our son, brother and best friend. He was a resident of Marin County. John A. Walker
Passed away on August 1, 2003 in Corte Madera at the age of 51. John is survived by his children Tom and Jeff Walker of Corte Madera, survived by his parents Norbert and Lorraine Walker of Milwaukee, WI. Brother to Michael (Laura) Walker of Virginia, Cynthia (Byron) Lane of CA, Mary Jo Halejak (Ole) Bisgaard of North Carolina, Rose (Tom) Haas of Wisconsin. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. John was the Assistant Scout Master for Boy Scouts of America, Troop 24. John was a Neuropsychologist at the Epilepsy Center at U.C.S.F. Medical Center, and was also an Assistant Clinical Professor. Donald Tallmadge Baird
Age 76, died at home Sunday August 3, 2003 surrounded by his loving family after a 6-month battle with cancer. A leading figure in West Coast Real Estate for over 50 years, Don served as President of Norris, Beggs & Simpson and the California Mortgage Banking Association. Don was an active member of his community and church, serving as a Knight of Malta, an active supporter of the St. Sebastian's and St. Hillary's parishes, and board member of the Catholic Archdiocese and St. Mary's Hospital. Don was born and raised in Seattle but made Marin County his home for the last 50 years. He is survived by his wife Cheri, daughters Sheila, Carla, and Denise, son Douglas, sister Joan, and eight grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on August 13th at St. Sebastian's Church, Greenbrae. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Don's memory either to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellan Avenue, Corte Madera, 94925 or Marin Home Care, 25 Bellam Blvd., San Rafael, 94901.
