Ethelyne Cooper, 81

ESCONDIDO - Ethelyne "Dudie" Jane Cooper, 81, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born Sept. 14, 1919, in San Marcos, Texas, she lived in Escondido for 14 years. She was a business owner before retiring and was a member of Escondido Womans Club and The Ladies of the Church of Resurrection.

Mrs. Cooper is survived by her son, James S. Cooper Jr. of Long Beach; sister Maxine Little of Escondido; and granddaughters Sandra L. Thomas and Jennifer Reid, both of Escondido.

Viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Alhiser-Wilson Mortuary. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Frank Ashleigh, 83

ESCONDIDO - Frank Donald Ashleigh, 83, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born July 12, 1916, in Redwoods, he lived in San Marcos for 25 years. He attended UC Berkeley and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the General Telephone Pioneers, Kiwanis Club and Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Ashleigh is survived by his sons, F. Donald Ashleigh of Anaheim and David Ashleigh of Modesto; daughter Kathie Meiklejohn of Penellas Park, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the First United Methodist Church of Escondido.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Inky and Frank Ashleigh Memorial Fund of the Methodist Church, to be used for the children of the church, at 341 S. Kalmia, Escondido, CA 92025.

Wilma Morrow, 58

POWAY - Wilma Lee Morrow, 58, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Villa Pomerado nursing facility.

Born Aug. 8, 1941, in San Diego, she lived in Poway for one year.

Mrs. Morrow is survived by her daughters Kimberly Smetana of Escondido and Shelly See; brothers David Morrow of Vista and Darrell Morrow of Milford, Neb.; uncle Morris Akers; and grandchildren Rex and Stacilee Smetana and Shamech, Jason, Monica and Jessica See.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Villa Pomerado nursing facility chapel in Poway. A private cremation is planned.

Ed Glenn, 96

PLAINVIEW, Texas - Ed Austin Glenn, 96, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Prairie House Living Center.

Born Dec. 16, 1903, in Wilbarger County, Texas, he lived at Prairie House Living Center in Longview, Texas. He was a former for 60 years and a member of the Longview Baptist Church for 40 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher and deacon.

Mr. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Ray McDowell, on Aug. 11, 1991; and his daughters, Eddie Ray Klokholm and Winona Allen. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Bobby and John Stephens of San Marcos; sister Ada Chambers of Deming, N.M.; grandchildren and their spouses Leslie and Mike Goforth and Ronda and David Denman, all of Plainview, Karen and Cody Allen Hurdt of Macomb, Ill., Stanton Allen of Flower Mound, Texas and Ronald Stephens of San Marcos; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. today, Feb. 5, at Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 5, at Muleshoe Memorial Park, with the Rev. Stacy Conner of the First Baptist Church in Muleshoe officiating. Burial will follow.

Raymond McCabe, 75

ESCONDIDO - Raymond Walter "Fourth Step Ray" McCabe, 75, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000.

Born Oct. 16, 1924, in Zelienople, Pa., he lived in Escondido He was an engineer before retiring and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. McCabe is survived by his sons, Daniel McCabe of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Richard McCabe of San Dimas; daughters Lorraine Coopersmith of St. Helen's Ore., Eileen Saldivar of Orlando, Fla., and Diana Doyle of Aurora, Colo.; brothers Louis McCabe of Hacienda Heights and Robert McCabe of Vista; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido.

The Neptune Society is handling arrangements.

Mary Ramme, 81

OCEANSIDE - Mary Elizabeth Ramme, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at her home.

Born June 28, 1918, in Kansas, she lived in Oceanside for 40 years. She was a registered nurse for the county of Los Angeles and served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse's Corps during World War II. She was a member of the Oceanside Elks Lodge No. 1561.

Mrs. Ramme is survived by her son and daughters-in-law, Frank and Maggie Ramme of Ontario; brother Ralph Reichert of Riley, Kan.; sisters Ruth Weitle of Lincoln, Neb., and Florence Higgins of New Orleans; and grandchildren Tess, Griffin and Annabel Ramme, all of Ontario.

A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Mission San Luis Rey Church, with the Rev. Vince Hughes officiating. Inurnment will follow at 2 p.m. at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery, with military honors.

The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice by the Sea, 312 South Cedros, Suite 250, Solana Beach, CA 92075.

Loy Coward, 88

OCEANSIDE - Loy A. Coward Jr., 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, in Oceanside.

Born Dec. 3, 1911, in Galveston, Texas, he lived in Oceanside for 13 years. He worked for McDonald-Douglas before retiring and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Van Nuys.

Mr. Coward is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katherine Coward of Oceanside.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 5, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A funeral will take place at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at Eternal Hills Mortuary, with the Rev. Hal Schultz officiating. interment is scheduled at Bellerive Heritage Gardens in St. Louis.

The family suggests memorial donations to the First Baptist Church of Oceanside, 240 Grace St., Oceanside, CA 92054.

Jan Morey, 62

RANCHO SANTA FE - Jan Morey, 62, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at her home in Rancho Santa Fe.

Born Oct. 12, 1937, in Oakland, she lived in Rancho Santa Fe for three years.

Mrs. Morey is survived by her husband, Paul Morey of Rancho Santa Fe; son Scott Morey of Barrington, Ill.; daughter Susan Meyers of Del Mar; brothers Jim Robinow of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Bob Robinow of Woodland Hills; and grandchildren Jason and Alex Meyers and Kailey, Marissa and Shane Morey.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at El Camino Mortuary Chapel in San Diego.

Miguel Castro, 17

ESCONDIDO - Miguel Angel Castro Jr., 17, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, in Escondido.

Born May 8, 1982, in Acapulco, Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 11 years. He was a student at Escondido Adult School and worked in food services at the Wild Animal Park.

Miguel is survived by his mother and father Maria Carmen and Miguel Angel Castro Sr. of Escondido; brother Edwin Castro of Escondido; and sister Alma Castro of Escondido.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, at McLeod Mortuary in Escondido, with Deacon Modesto Perez officiating. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Escondido, with the Rev. Peter Navarro officiating. Burial will follow at 11:15 a.m. at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Ralph Manza, 78

LEUCADIA - Ralph Manza, 78, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, of complications from a heart attack, at Scripps Hospital in Encinitas.

Born Dec. 1, 1921, in San Francisco, he lived in Leucadia since 1977. His film credits include Blazing Saddles, Get Shorty, Dave, Touch of Mink and The Shootist. He appeared in Friends, Home Improvement, Seinfeld, Mad About You and Newhart and was the blind man on Barney Miller. He was a regular on General Hospital. He was a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for many years. He attended the University of California at Berkeley as a pre-med student and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, entertaining soldiers on their way to the battlefield.

Mr. Manza is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine Manza; sons Dan Manza and Larry Manza; daughters Cynthia Manza and Lisa Wylie; and grandchildren Jenna Manza, Kathleen Manza and Matthew Wylie.

The family suggests memorial donations to a children's charity.

James Shields, 73

VISTA - James "Pat" Shields, 73, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at San Diego Hospice.

Born April 22, 1926, in Detroit, he lived in Vista for 40 years. He was a teacher for the San Marcos Unified School District and served as a master gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Master Gardener Association of San Diego County.

Mr. Shields is survived by his wife of 50 years, La Rose Shields of Vista; sons Michael Timothy Shields of Costa Mesa, Guy Melvin Shields of Oceanside and Daniel "D" Shields of Leucadia; daughter Linda L. Wilson of Escondido; and grandchildren Dean A. Wilson Jr., Daniel P. Wilson, Katie L. Shields and Jessica Green.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on Point Loma.

Patricia Brueggeman, 77

ESCONDIDO - Patricia D. Brueggeman, 77, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at her home.

Born May 8, 1922, in San Francisco, she lived in Escondido for 39 years. She worked for Palomar Medical Center before retiring and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an assistant pharmacist mate.

Mrs. Brueggeman is survived by her sons, Tim Brueggeman of Escondido and Tom Brueggeman of Fallbrook; daughters Terry Reyes of Georgia and Deborah Brueggeman of San Diego; and grandson Jacob Brueggeman.

A private family memorial service is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Amanda Baker, 20

TEMECULA - Amanda Leigh Baker, 20, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in a car accident on Rancho California Road in Temecula.

Born Jan. 27, 1980, in Fullerton, she lived in Temecula for one year. She was a hostess for Denny's Restaurant in Temecula for a year and won second place in the Golden State Beauty Contest in Anaheim.

Amanda is survived by her mother, Kaaren Baker of Temecula; father Chuck Baker of Corona; son Christian Adam Van Laarhoven of Temecula; and sisters Tamara Baker of Moreno Valley, Heidi Baker of Ramona and Lindsay Baker of Temecula; and grandparent Pat Lawrence of Poulsbo, Wash.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 5, at Stout Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at noon at Temecula Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Christian Van Laarhoven Education Fund, c/o California Bank & Trust, 30580 Rancho California Road, Temecula, CA 30580.
