Kenneth Raymond Mangan
Ken Mangan described himself as a "teacher of deaf children." Others would consider him an outstanding educator, an avid golfer or a prolific story teller. To his family and friends, he was a great role model of solid integrity, honor and intelligence. He died on June 5, 2001, in San Diego.
Kenneth R. Mangan, born Nov. 29, 1916, in a small farming community near Milwaukee, was one of nine children who struggled through the Great Depression. He studied at Milwaukee State Teacher's College in the late '30s and received his credentials for teaching deaf children. His first teaching job was at the MIchigan School for the Deaf in flint, where he was a teacher and then Dean of Students. It was at MSD that he met his wife, Kathryn Winkelman. Ken served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Pacific theater during World War II. He returned to MSD after the war and then accepted a position with the Wisconsin State Department of Special Education and moved his family to Stoughton, Wis. His next job was principal of the Gallaudet Day School in St. Louis, Mo. While there, he earned at EdD. degree in special education from Washington University. From there, he took the position of Superintendent of the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville, Ill., where he served masterfully for 18 years as n educator and community leader. His wife Kay, died in 1968.
Upon retirement from the superintendent's position, Ken moved to Canoga Park, where he held a professorship in the Department of Special Education at the California State University, Northridge. In 1983, he and his wife, Enid Terpstra, retired to Escondido to be near his only daughter and her husband and children, who live in San Diego. For several years, Ken was an adjunct professor in the Education of the Deaf program at San Diego State University.
As an avid golfer, a passion he passed on to his two grandchildren and many other relatives and friends, he won many golfing trophies, two of which were for "holes-in-one." He was a member for many years of the Jacksonville and the Escondido Country Clubs.
Kenneth is survived by his widow, Evelyn Siebrecht, his daughter Kathee M. Christensen and her husband, Ben, his two grandchildren, Kyra Phillips Assadsadeh and Charles D. Phillips and their spouses, respectively John Assadsadeh and Carrie Whipple Phillips, and his great-grandson King Oliver Mangan Phillips. In addition, Kenneth is survived by his own siblings, older brother Martin Mangan, his sisters Margaret Averill and Myrtle Martz living in Milwaukee and younger brother, Edward Mangan of Palm Desert.
A memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church of Escondido on Broadway Street in Escondido at 3 p.m., July 1. Persons wishing to honor his memory may donate to the Kenneth R. Harold E. Williams, 76
Harold Williams passed away Thursday, June 14, 2001.
He was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Detroit, Mich. He lived in Escondido for the past 17 years. A veteran of World War II, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Wanda Williams; a son, Harold D. Williams of Redwood City; a daughter, Gale Vozar; and grandson Shane Vozar, both of Escondido.

Robert Johnson, 71
SUN CITY - Robert Nye Johnson, 71, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Menifee Valley Medical Center of cancer.
Born Dec. 19, 1929, in Aurora, Ill., he lived in Sun City for nine years. He worked as a salesman for Lyon Metal Products Inc. in Aurora for 43 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards. He was a 25-year member of the Lion's Club International; and the Cherry Hills Golf Course.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane Johnson of Sun City; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Sheryl Johnson of Danbury, Wis.; daughter and son-in-law Colleen and James Matt of Colgate, Wis.; granddaughters Lindsay and Marsha Matt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sharon Myers, 59
SAN DIEGO - Sharon Lee Myers, 59, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, of heart failure.
Born June 22, 1941, in Rockford, Ill., she lived in San Diego for 30 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Myers is survived by her husband of 35 years, David A. Myers of San Diego; sons and daughter-in-law Rudy Myers of San Diego and Brian and Kimberly Myers of San Diego; daughters Carmela Mendosa of San Diego and Juana Myers of San Diego; brother Larry Dougherty of Utah; sisters Penny Murphy of Long Beach, Lynn Allred of Utah, Michelle Dougherty of Temecula and Jackie Smith of San Jose; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial is scheduled for today, June 16, in Oceanside; A private cremation and inurnment will be held at a later date at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

SUN CITY - Genevieve Crowley Herwer, 91, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at Sun City Convalescent.
Born July 13, 1909 in Denver, she lived in Sun City for 62 years. She had been a schoolteacher for the Los Angeles Diocese for nine years. She was a member of St. Vincent's Church in Sun City.
A Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church. A private burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Elizabeth Bonner, 82
ESCONDIDO - Elizabeth H. Bonner, 82, died Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at Scripps Green Hospital.
Born March 10, 1919, in Tennessee, she lived in Escondido for 20 years. She retired as a medical secretary after 21 years for San Carlos Medical Group.
Mrs. Bonner was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bonner, in 2001. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Franklin and Frances McComas of Fort Wright, Ky.; daughters and son-in-law Margaret and Aaron Lipton of Wenatchee, Wash., and Nancy Coiro of Paterson, N.J.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A private cremation and scattering is planned.

Herbert Hinckley, 98
VISTA - Herbert Paul Hinckley, 98, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born June 17, 1902, in Newbedford, Mass., he lived in Vista for 28 years. He was retired as a repairman for A.B. Wollie and Co.
Mr. Hinckley was preceded in death by his wife, Juliette C. Hinckley, in 1986. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law John and Mary Hinckley of Escondido and Paul and Jane Hinckley of Hicksville, N.Y.; daughter Alice Zigelis of Charlotte, N.C.; sister Dorinda Jaret of Keene, N.H.; grandson Glen Hinckley and step-grandson Jason Hinckley.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at River Bend Cemetery in Westerly, R.I. A private cremation is planned.

Jennie Flowers, 90
OCEANSIDE - Jennie W. Flowers, 90, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Pacific Place Care.
Born Sept. 13, 1910, in Findlay, Ill., she lived in Oceanside for 11 years. She was a homemaker.
Ms. Flowers is survived by her nephew, Tom Flowers of Cerritos.
No services will be held at the request of the deceased. Her cremains will be scattered at sea.

Donovan Hilebronner, 69
SAN MARCOS - Donovan Hilebronner, 69, died Thursday, June 14, 2001.
Born Oct. 20, 1931, in Sciotoville, Ohio, he lived in San Marcos for three years and in Southern California for 30 years. He retired in 1987 as a district manager for Safeway, Inc. He enjoyed golf, tennis and fishing.
Mr. Hilebronner is survived by his wife, Catherine Hilebronner of San Marcos; daughters and sons-in-law Jean and Tom Jones of Louisiana; Barbara and Max Dykmans of Rancho Santa Fe, Patricia Hilebronner of Louisiana and Nancy Hilebronner of La Mesa; brother Ted Hilebronner of Friendship, Ohio; and grandchildren Bryan Cunningham and Kevan Dykmans.
No formal services are planned. A celebration of life is planned for a later date.

Griffin Phillips, 51
ESCONDIDO - Griffin F. Phillips, 51, died Thursday, June 14, 2001.
Born Dec. 30, 1949, in Illinois, he lived in Escondido for one year and in San Diego for 10 years. He was a manager at Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Rademacher in 1976. He is survived by his stepfather, Peter Rademacher of Escondido; brothers Peter Rademacher II of Wilson, N.Y., Curtis Rademacher of Phoenix and Thomas Rademacher of Hollister; sister Jennifer Bielasz of Escondido; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private cremation and family services are planned.

Patrick Reilly, 78
LEAVENWORTH, Wash. - Patrick Reilly, 78, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash.
Born March 20, 1923, in Dundee, Scotland, he was a former resident of Carlsbad. He served in the British Royal Air Corps in Burma during World War II. He came to the United States in 1955 and worked at Hughes Aircraft and the Duetsche Co. as a machinist. He enjoyed golf.
Mr. Reilly was preceded in death by his two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Kevin and Jayma Reilly of Vista and Barty and Christy Reilly of Carlsbad; daughter and son-in-law Bridget and Steve Autenreith of Leavenworth; brothers Jimmy Reilly of Dundee, Scotland and Joe Reilly of Oceanside; and 12 grandchildren.
No formal services are planned at the request of the deceased.

Ernest Derho, 81
ESCONDIDO - Ernest C. Derho, 81, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at his home.
Born March 20, 1920, in Mishawaka, Ind., he lived in Escondido for two years and in Riverside for 38 years. He was in the life insurance business for 30 years. As a chartered life underwriter he received the National Qualify award each year. He received the "Man of the Year" in 1957 from Northwestern Life Insurance Co. in Milwaukee. He served in the U.S. Army Cavalry during World War II as a horse trainer and later as a paratrooper with the 101st Screaming Eagles Airborne and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a boxing champion, both amateur and professional and started a school of boxing. He won many tournaments as a pool champion. He coached a woman's pool team and was a pool instructor at the University of Riverside. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Riverside and Bethel Christian Center in Rancho Bernardo.
Mr. Derho was preceded in death by his sons, Andrew Derho in 1967 and John Derho in 1981; four brothers; and five sisters. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie "Steve" Derho; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Gary Bauer of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Trish Derho of Escondido; grandchildren Christine, Stephen, Sarah and Andrew; and two great-grandsons.
A memorial service is scheduled for noon, today, June 17, at Bethel Christian Center in Rancho Bernardo at the Joslyn Senior Center in the Rancho Bernardo Community Park. A graveside service is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

Loretta Adams, 97
ESCONDIDO - Loretta M. Adams, 97, died Sunday, June 10, 2001.
Born June 28, 1903, in Chicago, she retired in 1968 as a supervisor for the County of San Diego Health and Human Services in the Oceanside office. She had been a secretary in the war department in Washington D.C. She was one of the original 11 families that founded St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Encinitas. Since 1962, she was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Del Mar and served with the ladies auxilliary and was a volunteer for the St. Leo Mission Thrift Shop. She helped manager her husband's business, W.E. Adams Building Contractor. She had been a member of the San Dieguito Square Dance Club.
Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Adams in March 1987; daughter Patricia in March 1957; son James in September 1945; and sister Katherine Kundinger in March 2001. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David and Carla of San Diego; grandson David and his wife Suzy; two great-grandchildren; and three nephews.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, June 17, at El Camino Chapel in San Diego. A Mass and rosary is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at St. James Catholic Church in Solana Beach with the Rev. Lawrence Purcell officiating. Burial will follow at El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego with the Rev. Purcell officiating.

Margaret Davis Larkin
Margaret Davis Larkin of Carlsbad, died May 28, in San Diego after a brief bout with esophageal cancer. Born on Aug. 11, 1918, in New York City, Peggy grew up in Minnesota and later moved to San Diego North County where she lived for almost 40 years. After retiring as a Family Intervention Therapist for the Care Unit at Mission Bay Hospital/San Diego, she contributed her time to several charitable organizations, most notably as a board member of The Country Friends/North County, as vice president of the San Dieguito Animal Care Center in Rancho Santa Fe, and as a volunteer at The Country Friends' Shop in Rancho Santa Fe. She was an active volunteer at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar and at Scripps Hospital's McDonald Center.
Peggy loved all sports, renewing her season ticket to the Chargers games even after the climb to her seat became arduous. She played golf all her life and spent countless happy hours on the county's many beautiful courses. An active resident of Rancho Carlsbad, Peggy gleefully sang in the Mobile-Aires choir and contributed her pennies to weekly bridge and poker games. She also loved the symphony and theater and attended them regularly in San Diego.
She followed the careers and interests of her three daughters as well as her nieces, nephews, their families, and all their best friends. Her family and many friends will miss her kindness, compassion, humor, and courage. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Donald D. Davis, her sister Mary Davis Pierson, and her ex-husband, Arthur E. Larkin, Jr. Surviving are three daughters, Wendy Davis Larkin of San Rafael, Barbara Lou Larkin of Midland, Ga., and Margaret Larkin Hutchison of Valatie, NY and her brother Donald D. Davis, Jr. of Shorewood, MN.

James Ahlzen Gray Sr.
James Ahlzen Gray Sr., a longtime resident of Vista, died in Pleasanton on June 14. He was 80 years old. Born in Idyllwild, he attended San Jacinto High School and joined the U.S. Navy serving in World War II as a gunners mate first class from 1942 to 1945. He worked in the lumber industry for more than 30 years and was the manager of Geib Lumber in Vista for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Eileen (Lee) Gray of Dublin; two sons, James Jr. and his wife Christine of Vista, Bob Sawyer and his wife Betty of Alameda; daughter Barbara Bond and her husband, Keith of Castro Valley; sister Betty Peters and her husband, Pete of Riverside; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Neva Gray after 35 years of marriage. James was a loving father and grandfather. He was a member of the Vista Rotary Club for more than 30 years and past president of 1966-67.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20 at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery, 2555 Santa Fe in San Jacinto.

Alice Harvey, 75
OCEANSIDE - Alice Harvey, 75, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Life Care Center in Vista of heart problems.
Born March 26, 1926, in Chelsea, Mass., she lived in Oceanside for 33 years. She was retired from Bank of America and was a member of Elks Emblem Club, serving two terms as an officer.
Mrs. Harvey is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gerry Harvey of Oceanside; sons William G. Harvey Jr. of Pittsboro, N.C., and Russell E. Harvey of Cranford, N.J.; daughter Debra Ann Allen of San Marcos; brother William H. Curtis Jr. of Lynn, Mass.; sister Eleanor Bonnano of Framingham, Mass.; grandchildren Victoria, Vannesa, Matthew, Russell and Louis; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at San Luis Rey Mission Church with the Rev. Michel Gagnon officiating.
