SUN CITY - Helen Rose Ivec, 83, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born Jan. 3, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio, she lived in Sun City for 28 years. She was the owner of Greenmont Lane Bowling Alley in Ohio for 17 years. She was a parishioner of St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church and was a member of the North Golf Course. She enjoyed golfing, bowling and dancing at the Civic Center in Sun City.
Mrs. Ivec is survived by her husband of 46 years, Joseph Ivec of Sun City.
Miller-Jones Mortuary Inc. is handling arrangements.

Mildred McCafferty, 88
FALLBROOK - Mildred McCafferty, 88, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, of natural causes.
Born April 21, 1913, in Appanoose County, Iowa, she lived in Fallbrook for 30 years. She retired in 1971 from North American Aviation.
Mrs. McCafferty was preceded in death by her husband, William McCafferty, in 1989. She is survived by her son, James of Hot Springs, Ark.; brother Claudie Climie of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.; granddaughter Kelly McCafferty Sisk of San Diego; and one great-grandson.
A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. today, June 26, at Fallbrook Masonic Cemetery.
Berry-Bell & Hall is handling arrangements.

Norman Kelly, 97
ESCONDIDO - Norman Morrison Kelly, 97, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Palomar Continuing Care Center.
Born Sept. 12, 1903, in Hollister, he lived in Escondido for 50 years. He founded the San Diego Rotary Broom Company Inc. and served as president for seven years. He graduated from the College of the Pacific in Stockton. He was a system analyst with Lockheed Aircraft during World War II. He was in the bottling business in San Diego and moved it to Escondido in 1951. He was a Master Mason of the Consuelo Lodge and helped found the North County Daylight Lodge. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of San Diego, Royal Arch Tyre Chapter 130, a past president of the Al Bahr Temple Guard, Order of the Eastern Star Escondido Chapter 154, past president of the High Twelve Club 437, and was a member of the Escondido Farm Bureau and the Escondido Rotary Club.
Mr. Kelly is survived by his wife of 30 years, Betty E. Kelly of Escondido; son James Kelly of Tuscumbia, Ala.; daughter Sharon Kelly of Anchorage, Alaska; stepsons David Thomason of Toluca Lake and Steven Thomason of Alhambra; grandchildren David Kelly, Sheridan Attia, Kenneth Hines, and Kevin Hines; and five great-grandchildren.
A private cremation and scattering at sea is planned.

Flavia Bourg, 95
ESCONDIDO - Flavia Bourg, 95, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Carmel Mountain in San Diego of natural causes.
Born Nov. 12, 1905, in Rollette, N.D., she lived in Escondido for 32 years. She was owner and operator of a market and gas station in Poulsbo, Wash., and retired in 1969. She was a 60-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and the House of Prayer Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening.
Mrs. Bourg was preceded in death by her husband, Clovis Bourg, on March 9, 1987. She is survived by her daughter Carolee Strahl of Lancaster; grandchildren Jayme, Christi, Leslie and Tari; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 5 p.m. with funeral starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary with the Rev. Paul Black, of the House of Prayer Lutheran Church officiating. A private burial will be held on Thursday, June 28, at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

Louis Reinhard, 80
OCEANSIDE - Louis Henry Reinhard, 80, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born March 1, 1921, in Washington, he lived in Oceanside for 16 years. He was a retired salesman from Morse Hardware. He was a leader of the Hackers Golf Club and a member of the El Camino Country Club where he served on its board of governors. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Reinhard is survived by his wife of 30 years, Eleanor Reinhard of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Bryant and Janice Reinhard of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren Brenden Lightner, Lesley Peterson, Beau Reinhard and Alice Mickelson; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Eternal Hills Chapel. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Kidney Foundation, 3570 Camino Del Rio N, San Diego, CA 92108.

Jimmie Baze, 75
ESCONDIDO - Jimmie Clifford Baze, 75, died Friday, June 22, 2001.
Born Nov. 11, 1925, in Oklahoma, he lived in Escondido for 21 years. He was a self-employed truck driver. He enjoyed gardening, doing mechanics, traveling, fishing and canning vegetables.
Mr. Baze is survived by his wife of 12 years, Betty Bell-Baze of Escondido; son and daughter-in-law Robert and Judy Atler of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Shirley and Richard Taylor of Oceanside, Beverly Merkle of Vista, Nancy and David Simmons of North Carolina and Delores and Joe Simmons of North Carolina; brothers and sister-in-law J.C. Baze of Morro Bay, Willy and Joyce Baze of Fresno, Vonnie Baze of Madera and Cortez and Jimmie Lee Hallum of Madera; sisters Juanita Burns of Madera and Rosalie Jobe of Washington; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today, June 26, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Alan Pickering officiating. Interment icon will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma with Dr. Pickering officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Josephine Koehler, 87
FALLBROOK - Josephine Clara Koehler, 87, died Sunday, June 24, 2001.
Born June 7, 1914, in Columbus, Ohio, she lived in Fallbrook for five years. She retired after 35 years as an office manager from Ohio Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Grove City, Ohio; a past member of Grove City Civic Club and attended Christ the King Lutheran Church in Fallbrook.
Mrs. Koehler was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur R. Koehler, in 1984, and brothers Earl J. Ruoff and Stanley Ruoff in 2000. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Tom and Sharon Koehler of Fallbrook; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to Christ the King Memorial Endowment Fund, Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1620 S. State Coach Lane, Fallbrook, CA 92028.

Donald Lewis, 69
ESCONDIDO - Donald Emerson Lewis, 69, died Friday, June 15, 2001, in Everett, Wash., of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Born March 15, 1932, in Wetumka, Okla., he lived in Escondido for 17 years and in Everett for four years. He worked at Diversified Industrial Service and as a quality assurance manager and registered professional engineer for the state of California.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Elise Lewis of Everett, Wash.; sons and daughters-in-law Rick and Cheryll Lewis of Oceanside and Jeffery and Jennifer Lewis of New Orleans; daughter and son-in-law Kendall and Steve Best of Long Beach; brother and sister-in-law Guy and Doris Lewis of Bellevue, Wash.; sisters and brothers-in-law Elizabeth and Dick Egan of Medford, Ore., and Katherine and Bill Graham of Concord; grandchildren Craig, Eric, Neal and Jennifer Lewis; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 18, at Everett Funeral and Cemetery. A private cremation is planned.

Richard Simeno, 63
OCEANSIDE - Richard A. Simeno, 63, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at his home of a heart attack.
Born July 25, 1937, in Storm Lake, Iowa, he lived in Oceanside for 35 years. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps for 18 years.
Mr. Simeno is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janet Simeno of Oceanside; sons Richard D. Simeno of Oceanside and Bradley D. Simeno of Vista; daughters Cathy L. Bleul of Vista, Julie D. Simeno of Oceanside and Bonnie J. Moreno of Oceanside; brother Tom Simeno of Storm Lake; grandchildren Christopher, Jason, Steven, Rachel, Brinna, Ashley, Kaylan and Aaron; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today, June 26, at Emmanuel Faith Community Church of Escondido.

Marsha Weddle, 50
ESCONDIDO - Marsha Ellen Weddle, 50, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Nov. 9, 1950, in Norfolk, Va., she lived in Escondido for 40 years. She was an assembly inspector at Raytheon Inc. She graduated from Orange Glen High School in 1968. She created soft sculptured dolls, designed and made jewelry and enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Ms. Weddle was preceded in death by her father, Howard Weddle, in 1996. She is survived by her mother, Evelyn Weddle of Escondido; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Armond Martineau of Valley Center; and aunts, uncle, cousins, niece, nephew and great-nephews.
A private cremation and private family services are planned.

Robert Barrows, 80
OCEANSIDE - Robert Edwards Barrows, 80, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001.
Born Jan. 29, 1921, in Massachusetts, he served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a fighter pilot. He was a member of the Pilot Class 43-D Association.
Mr. Barrows was preceded in death by his wife, Erika Barrows. He is survived by his stepson Ronald McAfee of W. Palm Beach, Fla.; daughters Linda S. Murphy of Santa Fe, N.M., and Joan M. Burth of March, N.Y.; brother Richard Barrows of Groton, Conn.; and two grandchildren.
A private cremation and private family service is planned.

Mary Uhl, 85
OCEANSIDE - Mary Lee Uhl, 85 died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born June 5, 1916, in Ismay Mont., she lived in Oceanside for 30 years. She was a homemaker for 30 years.
Ms. Uhl is survived by her son, Jack Kujawa of Mesa, Ariz.
A memorial service is scheduled for 7 p.m. today, June 26, at Oceana South Club House with the Rev. David Plank officiating. A private cremation with a scattering at sea is planned.

John 'Jack' Ahlswede
Long-time North San Diego County resident, John Wadsworth "Jack" Ahlswede passed away on June 16, 2001. Born in Los Angeles on July 11, 1919, to Katherine Wadsworth and Roland Benjamen Ahlswede, Jack was the youngest of three children. He attended Flintridge Prep School and had begun his college education at Dartmouth when the United States entered World War II. Jack volunteered to serve in the Army Signal Corps, having some difficulty being accepted because, at 6'7", he exceeded the height standards. However, he persevered and was subsequently enlisted and later participated in the campaign on Saipan.
Upon returning from the war, he obtained his degree in subtropical horticulture at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he graduated with honors.
He first visited North San Diego County in 1943, then in 1950, he settled in Vista with his wife, Ann (Wilkins) and his baby daughter, Paula. He established Ahlswede Wholesale Nursery, operating it very successfully for more than 40 years, during which time his daughter, Linda, and son, John, were born.
As the years passed, Jack became an active participant in professional associations such as the California Association of Nurserymen and the Farm Bureau. He also obtained his real estate broker's license and worked in that capacity for a number of years. Jack was involved in the community of Vista where he served on the safety council.
He and Ann were members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Jack also ran for the Vista United School District School Board. Over the years, Jack was an active member in Kiwanis, Big Brothers of America, Meals on Wheels, and Rancho Coastal Humane Society where he volunteered in their thrift shop in Solana Beach until early in the year 2000.
Jack is survived by his two sisters, Joan Grange and Gretchen Garnett; his three children, Paula Wilson, Linda Ahlswede Cox and John Ahlswede; and his grandchildren Kristen Wilson, Amy Wilson Lauer, Weston Ahlswede and Erik Ahlswede
Memorial donations may be made to the Rancho Coastal Humane Society, 389 Requeza St., Encinitas CA 92023-0605.

Robert White Watson
Dr. Watson died Thursday, June 21, 2001, from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.
Bob was born on Oct. 31, 1916, in Galesburg, Ill. His family moved to California in 1932, where Bob attended San Jose State University. He returned to Illinois where he received his bachelor's degree and medical degree from Northwestern University.
During World War II, Lieutenant Commander Watson served as chief medical officer on the USS Owen in the Pacific arena.
Dr. Bob married nurse Jean Lindsay on July 29, 1945, in Pasadena. During their 56 years of marriage the couple traveled extensively and they created homes in San Mateo, Tulare and Carlsbad, as well as the island of Guam. They settled finally in San Marcos.
Dr. Watson specialized in radiology and spent most of his career as the first radiologist at both Tulare District and Kaweah Delta of Visalia hospitals. He enjoyed the environment in the San Juaquin Valley both as a new physician and a weekend farmer.
Bob was proceeded in death by his second son, Lance. He is survived, in fond memory, by his wife of 56 years, Jean; their eldest son Robert and wife Gail of New Orleans; daughter Wende and husband Philip Crabtree of the Elfin Forest; son David and wife Patricia of Santa Cruz; and son Lindsay and wife Tina of Ramona; as well as six grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 2775 Carlsbad Blvd. in Carlsbad.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice by the Sea, PO Box 1667, Solana Beach, CA 92075, The Alzheimer's Association of San Diego, 8514 Commerce Ave., San Diego, CA 92121 or St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Carlsbad.

Bruce Schon, 61
SAN DIEGO - Bruce Schon, 61, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at Veterans Hospital.]
Born May 28, 1940, in San Diego, he lived in San Diego for three years. She served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Schon is survived by his mother, Dorothy Schon of La Puente; son Michael Andrew Schon of Salem, Ore.; daughters Julie Ramet of Keizer, Ore., and Christy Dawn Carney of Salem, Ore.; sister Gracie Adams of Escondido; and grandchildren Kylie and Nathan.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, July 2, at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard Huk officiating.

Jennie Fox. 93
CARLSBAD - Jennie Mae Fox, 93, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001.
Born Dec. 30, 1907, in Columbus, Ohio, she lived in Carlsbad for two years. She was an insurance broker and had her own company in Orange County.
Mrs. Fox was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent K. Fox, in 1977. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Kathe Fox of Carlsbad, Robert and Joyce Fox of Palm Springs and Vincent and Mitzi Fox of Carson City, Nev.; and grandchildren, Kathy, Linda, Larry, Steve, Vickie, Tim, Dan and Ryan.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at Encinitas Mortuary in Encinitas. A private cremation is planned.
