ENCINITAS - Leo F. Smith, 87, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at his home in Encinitas.

Born Jan. 16, 1912, in Boston, he lived in Encinitas for 25 years.

Mr. Smith is survived by his sister, Eleanor M. Lally of Encinitas; five nephews; and two nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, at Encinitas Mortuary. A private burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Pearl Franklin, 74

ESCONDIDO - Pearl Frances Franklin, 74, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Sept. 14, 1925, in Ellicott City, Md., she lived in Escondido for three years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Franklin is survived by her husband of 44 years, Walter Franklin of Escondido; daughters and sons-in-law Elaine Franklin and Michael Sugamele of Escondido and Robin and Chris Pollatos of New Windsor, Md.; and grandchildren Andrea Pollatos and Nicholas Pollatos, both of New Windsor.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 10, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A chapel service is scheduled for noon Saturday, March 11, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary.

Lercy Lee, 66

OCEANSIDE - Lercy M. Lee, 66, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Camp Pendleton.

Born July 9, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo., he lived in Oceanside for 45 years. He was a glazier at Camp Pendleton before retiring. He served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps before retiring and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a boxer in the U.S. Army and was chosen to go to the 1956 Olympics.

Mr. Lee is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rebecca Lee of Oceanside; sons Phillip Lee of La Mesa, Jeffrey Lee of Oceanside and Anthony Lee of Oakland; daughters Carrie Lynn Lee of Oceanside, Edel Jarboe of Santa Barbara and Reba Anna Lee of San Diego; brothers John Lee, Nicomeus Lee, Albert Lee, Samson Lee and Clarence Lee; sisters Dorothy Lee, Bobbie Lee, Shirley Lee and Mary Lee.

A graveside service will be held at 1:15 p.m. today, March 10, at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 2, with military honors. Burial will follow.

Elmer Martin, 78

PERRIS - Elmer Joseph Martin, 78, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, of a heart attack, at his home in Perris.

Born Sept. 9, 1921, in St. Louis, he lived in Perris for seven years. He was a self-employed tool and dye maker in Corona for 58 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife, Della Martin of Perris; mother Loretta Piel of Missouri; sons Buddy Goetz of Florissant, Mo., Ron Martin of BonneTerre, Mo., Tim Martin of Kent, Wash., Clyde Stires of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Gary Stires of Irvine and Robert Stires of Orange; daughters Vicki Mier of Perris, Debra Radosevich of BonneTerre and Linda Stroup of Sullivan, Mo.; brother Matthew Martin of Overland, Mo.; sisters Gertrude Frame of Wright City, Mo., Lillie Peters of Havelwood, Mo., and Loretta Richardson of BonneTerre; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory. A funeral service is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 13, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Julian Duarte, 96

LAKE ELSINORE - Julian Jaramillo Duarte, 96, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, from complications of pneumonia, at Life Care Corona.

Born Oct. 11, 1903, in Bacoiachi, Mexico, he lived in Lake Elsinore for 64 years. He was a skip loader operator for Pacific Clay for 35 years.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1943 and was a member, secretary, treasurer and president of Cociedad Obreros Mexicana Independiente and the fraternal society of Mexican Workers.

Mr. Duarte was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and a grandson. He is survived by his wife, Aurora Duarte of Lake Elsinore; sons Juan Duarte of Loma Mar and Julian Duarte of Nuevo; daughters Jeanne Duarte-Armas of Hayward and Margarita Zamorano of Phoenix; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held Thursday, March 9, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. A memorial service is scheduled for 6 p.m. today, March 10, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory. Burial will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

Lela Johnston, 89

MURRIETA - Lela Bell Johnston, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, of a cerebral vascular accident.

Born July 17, 1910, in Hobart, Okla., she lived in Murrieta for six years. She was a member of the Merced Baptist Church where she taught primary classes. She was a bookkeeper for Merced Bearing Co.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Mable and Erwin Bulen of Murrieta.

Burial will take place at Hobart Cemetery in Hobart, Okla.

Valley Funeral Home in Murrieta is handling arrangements.

Francis Schuler, 76

TEMECULA - Francis M. Schuler, 76, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, of cancer, in Tijuana, Mexico.

Born March 29, 1923, in Brookings, S.D., he lived in Temecula for five years. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy in 1949 and the owner of Bell Gardens Pharmacy in Bell Gardens, retiring in 1995. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and was a member of Temecula Valley Elks Lodge and Bell Gardens and Temecula Lions Club for 42 years. He was past president of Southeast Pharmacy Association and Southern California Pharmacy Association. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Temecula.

Mr. Schuler is survived by his wife, Sue Schuler of Temecula; son Mark Schuler of Laguna Niguel; daughters Susan Schuler of North Hollywood, Michele Feliz of Brea, Beth Schuler and Stacy Schuler, both of La Habra; and two grandchildren.

Visitation was held and a rosary recited Thursday, March 9, at Stout Family Funeral Home. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, March 10, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Temecula. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 5.

The family suggests memorial donations to Southern California Lions Eye Institute, 2232 Santa Monica Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90404.

Wilford Johnston, 61

VALLEY CENTER - Wilford Paul Johnston, 61, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, of cancer, at his home.

Born Oct. 30, 1938, in Bakersfield, he lived in Valley Center for 20 years. He was the owner/manager of Fluidtech Products and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1979.

Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Johnston of Valley Center; son Todd W. Johnston of Escondido; daughter Pamela G. Stanley of Valley Center; and grandchildren Bryon Paul Stanley and Brianna Gail Stanley.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Valley Center Community Church. A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite A, San Diego, CA 92128.

Robert Nanz, 69

ESCONDIDO - Robert William Nanz Sr., 69, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Feb. 3, 1931, in Waukesha, Wis., he lived in Escondido for 12 years. He was a real estate developer and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the Carroll College Board of Trustees.

Mr. Nanz is survived by his companion, Flo-Etta Looney of Chula Vista; sons and daughters-in-law Robert Jr. and Catherine Nanz of Escondido, Theodore and Noelle Bryant-Nanz of Pewaukee, Wis., and Stephen Nanz of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and grandchildren August, Rosa, Noel and Anya.

A committal service was held at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Waukesha and a requiem Mass was celebrated at All Saints Episcopal Cathedral in Milwaukee.

The family suggests memorial donations to Carroll College, 100 N. East Ave., Waukesha, WI 53186.

Mabel Tuma, 89
OCEANSIDE - Mabel Catherine Tuma, 89, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, in Oceanside.

Born Jan. 11, 1911, in Newark, N.J., she lived in Oceanside and had lived in Carlsbad and Vista. She worked in food service and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Tuma was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Anthony Tuma; son Frank Victor Tuma; and sister Lillian Becht. She is survived by her son, George Tuma Sr. of Oceanside; grandchildren Stanley, Diane and George Jr.; great-grandchildren Lynette and Daniel; great-great-grandchildren Meredith and Benjamin; nephews Dr. Victor Tuma of Edison, N.J., John Tuma of Springfield, N.J., James Tuma of Edison, and Edward Becht of Fredericksberg, Va.; nieces Linda LaBella of Freehold, N.J., and Jackie Speckman of Bayville, N.J.; and numerous grand and great nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 6, at Faith Lutheran Church in Vista. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.

Susan Laughton, 68

VISTA - Susan G. Laughton, 68, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, in Vista.

Born Dec. 4, 1931, in La Habra, she lived in Vista for 27 years.

Mrs. Laughton is survived by her husband of 50 years, Raymond Laughton of Vista; daughters Diane Harrelson of Oceanside and Catherine Cheney of Simi Valley; sisters Marian Johnson of Vista and Phyllis Houge of Encinitas; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 6, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. Bob McKinley officiating. Interment icon will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Donald Markey, 80

OCEANSIDE - Donald James Markey, 80, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.

Born Feb. 4, 1920, in Kentucky, he lived in Oceanside for 18 years. He was a pipe fitter for the Long Beach Naval shipyard before retiring and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Markey is survived by his son, Michael Markey of Wichita Falls, Texas.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 7, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Burial will follow with military honors.

Lydia Zarate, 58
CARLSBAD - Lydia Eleanor Hernandez Zarate, 58, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Carlsbad.

Born Nov. 9, 1941, in Brawley, she lived in Carlsbad since 1969. She graduated from Loma Linda Academy and received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Pacific Union College. She worked for H&R Block and the Carlsbad Union School District. She was also a homemaker for many years.

Mrs. Zarate is survived by her husband of 36 years, Miguel L. Zarate of Carlsbad; son Richard Marcos Zarate of San Marcos; daughter Lisa Serrano of San Marcos; and granddaughter Alyssa Serrano.

A private family blessing was held at the family home.

George Stewart, 90

CARLSBAD - George W. Stewart, 90, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000.

Born Aug. 16, 1910, in Plainfield, N.J., he lived in Carlsbad for 25 years. He was the owner of Felter/Stewart Real Estate in Tenafly, N.J. He was a member of the Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carlsbad Fourth Ward and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World WAR II. He was commander of the American Legion in Closter, N.J. from 1957 to 1958, a volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America in Closter, past president of Closter Republican Club from 1956 to 1957, past president of Bergen County Board of Realtors in Teaneck, N.J., in 1969, a member of the Congregational/United Church of Christ in Closter, a volunteer for Area Agency on Aging from 1974 to 1979 and executive director of San Marcos Chamber of Commerce in 1979.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 68 years, Edna Crawford Stewart of Fallbrook; son Gary Hulling Stewart of Demarest, N.J.; daughters Lynda Stewart Hiatt of Fallbrook and Judith Stewart Pattberg of Sandy, Utah; brother Gibson Stewart of San Diego; grandchildren Kathi Olin, Judi Hiatt, Jason Stewart, Lindsay Stewart, Ryan Stewart, Whitney Stewart, Tyler Stewart, Graham Stewart, Mackenzie Stewart, Zachary Stewart, Chris Pattberg, Jennifer Smith, David Pattberg, Matthew Pattberg and Amy Pattberg; and great-grandchildren Stephanie Schweigert, Jace Schweigert, Tyler Olin, Blake Olin, Heather Hiatt, Meghan Hiatt, Amber Hiatt, Rachel Hiatt, Cameron Pattberg, Kayla Pattberg, Kimber Pattberg, Alex Smith and Connor Smith.

A life celebration and memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mesa Chapel in Oceanside.

Betty Sperry, 82

SAN DIMAS - Betty Beyer Sperry, 82, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, in San Dimas.

Born Sept. 30, 1917, in Spokane, Wash. she worked for the city of Oceanside before retiring. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for many years.

Mrs. Sperry is survived by her husband, Vernon; son Robert Reiner; and daughter Susan Slack. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 13, at Oakdale Memorial Park in Glendora.

The family suggests memorial donations to Inland Valley Hospice, 3770 Myers St., Riverside, CA 92503.

Michael McCluskey, 47

EL CAJON - Michael L. McCluskey, 47, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, in El Cajon.

Born Nov. 8, 1952, in Minneapolis, he lived in El Cajon for six years.

Mr. McCluskey is survived by his father, Leroy McCluskey of Oceanside; daughter Suzanne McCluskey of San Fernando; and brother Daniel McCluskey of Fallbrook.

No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.

MURRIETA - Gavin Thomas Hogg, 51, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, of coronary artery disease.

Born July 5, 1948, in Winnepeg, Canada, he lived in Murrieta for two years. He was a member of the 40s Limited Club of Orange County.

Mr. Hogg is survived by his wife, Pamela Hogg of Murrieta; son James Hogg of Fullerton; daughters Sharon Hogg and Laurie Hogg, both of Murrieta, and Allison Hogg of Fullerton; and sister Suzanne Kelley of Marietta, Ga.

A memorial service was held Monday, March 13, at Murrieta United Methodist Church.

Herman Kroll, 87

SAN DIEGO - Herman Kroll, 87, died Thursday, March 9, 2000. at his home.

Born Dec. 22, 1913, in Cleveland, he lived in San Diego for six years and had lived in Sun City for 12 years. He worked as an auditor for Los Angeles County for 40 years and was a member of the Speech Crafters in Los Angeles.

Mr. Kroll is survived by his sons, Allan Kroll of Aguanga and John Kroll of Norfolk, Va.; daughters Katherine Black of San Diego and Trudy Bird of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today, March 14, at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery.
