Mildred Martin, 90

VISTA - Mildred R. Martin, 90, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, in Oceanside.
Born Nov. 13, 1910, in Minneapolis, she lived in Vista for five years. Mrs. Martin retired in 1980, from the University of Southern California.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law James Martin of Vista and Thomas and Deidra Martin of Riverside; sisters Marian Bergman of Bloomington, Minn., Gladys Voegtli of DuPierre, Wis., and Lenore Rusinski of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A private cremation and scattering at sea is planned.
Eternal Hills Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Senta Szabo, 68

VALLEY CENTER - Senta E. Szabo, 68, died Saturday, March 17, 2001.
Born June 29, 1932, in Russia, she lived in Valley Center for nine years. She was a homemaker for 37 years. She was a member of the Garden Club of Valley Center, the German Club of Vista and enjoyed raising flowers, cooking, knitting blankets for babies and sewing.
Mrs. Szabo is survived by her husband of 37 years, Joseph Szabo of Valley Center; brothers and sister-in-law Walter and Mary Hohloch of Canada and Oscar Wagner of Munci, Ind.; nephew Steve Wagner of Ocomos, Mich.; and nieces Marita and Heidi Hohloch both of Canada.
A graveside service is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido.
Alhiser-Comer Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Eris Orton, 77

ESCONDIDO - Eris Muriel Orton, 77, died Friday, March 16, 2001.
Born June 15, 1923, in Gillet Grove, Iowa, she lived in Escondido for one year. She was an obstetrics nurse at Ridgecrest for 26 years.
Mrs. Orton is survived by her husband, Criley Orton of Escondido; daughters Mary Orton and Barbara Hawthorne, both of Austin, Texas and Kathy Garica of San Diego; brother Jim Stewart of Santa Monica; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Rick Green officiating. A private inurnment is planned at Crestlawn Memorial Park in Riverside.

Helen Jones, 84

ESCONDIDO - Helen Velma Jones, 84, died Thursday, March 15, 2001.
Born April 6, 1916, in New Orleans, she lived n Escondido for 27 years. She was a homemaker for 60 years. She worked with may different Catholic charities and loved "I Love Lucy," cooking, gardening and Las Vegas.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Norman F. Jones, in 1981. She is survived by her son Alan J. Jones of Escondido and cousin Vicky Jeffrey of Denver.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Friday, March 23, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Nadine Price, 88

ESCONDIDO - Nadine D. Price, 88, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Palomar Hospital.
She was born Dec. 25, 1912, in Santa Ana. Her last position was as bookkeeper at the Murrieta Hot Springs Resort and Spa. She was a member of the Palomar Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she donated more than 2,500 hours of service. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include many friends. No services are planned.
Accu-Care Cremation Center is handling arrangements.

Vernon Miller, 72

VISTA - Vernon J. Miller, 72, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Life Care Center of Vista from cancer.
Born March 25, 1928, in Oyen, Alberta, Canada, he lived in the Vista and Oceanside area for 26 years. He was a route salesman for Vangas Propane for many years and an usher at St. Francis Catholic Church for 25 years.
Mr. Miller was preceded in death by his son, Mark Miller, in 1992. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Irene Miller of Vista; son and daughter-in-law Perry and Mika Miller of Vista; daughters and son-in-law Darlene Ash of St. Charles, Mo., and Donna and Steven Orth of Oceanside; grandchildren Matthew and Sarah Miller of Vista, James Ash of St. Charles, Mo., and Hayley Orth of Oceanside.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, March 23, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Vista and inurnment at 12:30 p.m. at Mission San Luis Rey cemetery.

Rex Mershon, 69
MURRIETA - Rex Edmond Mershon, 69, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at his home of emphysema.
Born Oct. 13, 1931, in Honolulu, he lived in Murrieta for 18 years. He owned and operated Mershon Plastering in Murrieta. He has worked at the superintendent for Stelar Enterprise of Canyon Lake. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1956 during the Korean War.
Mr. Mershon is survived by his wife, Phyllis Mershon of Murrieta; daughters Patricia Grady of Redondo Beach, Pamela Grubbs of Lake Elsinore and Phyllis Mershon of Murietta; sons Edmond Mershon of Anchorage, Alaska, Grant Mershon of Redondo Beach and Thomas Mershon of Canyon Lake; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, March 22, and service at noon, at Miller-Jones Mortuary, Sun City. A private inurnment is planned.

Frederick Wilson, 76
MURRIETA - Frederick Owen Wilson, 76, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at his home.
Born Oct. 15, 1924, in Syracuse, N.Y., he lived in Murrieta. He was a U.S. Government Customs Agent working in narcotics and revenue protection. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician and then a nuclear armasist on a submarine.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his sons Lyell Alberg of Hemet and Thomas Lemke of Oklahoma; daughters Darlene Jacobs of Murrieta, Laura Ann Tisdal of Sacramento, Sandra Wilson of Bakersfield and Lynell Wolfe of Whittier; sister Barbara Myers of Tullahoma, Tenn.; brothers George Wilson of Kirkville, N.Y. and Robert Wilson of Woodstock, Ga.; 29 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Ed Walker, 83
Joseph "Ed" Walker passed away March 18, 2001, at his home in Sun City. He died after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Ed was born in Wall Lake, Iowa, on Sept. 26, 1917. He was one of five children. His sister, Maybelle Cross and brother Bill Walker survive him. The family came to Santa Monica when Ed was nine years old. He attended the Santa Monica schools and excelled in pole vault and tennis. As a child he asked the Lord if he could be a farmer and a coach. His desires were realized when he became a turkey/chicken rancher in Elsinore, and a tennis coach at different clubs and schools. He finished his working years at Victoria Club in Riverside in 1981.
He had 58 years of marriage with his wife, Virginia, and they have three daughters, Linda Barlogio, of Corona, Suzy Howe, of Millerton, Pa., and Sally Hanks, of Sun City. There are seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Ed donated his body to Loma Linda anatomy department hoping in some way someone would be helped through it. In lieu of flowers, his favorite charities were Voice of Christ Ministries, Nenana, Alaska and Wycliffe Missionaries, Dick and Carold (lq) John in Dallas, Texas. Memorial services will be held at Canyon Lake Community Church on March 24, at 10 a.m.

Ed Walker, 83
SUN CITY - Ed Walker, 83, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, of cancer at his home.
Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Wall Lake, Iowa, he lived in Sun City. He was a turkey/chicken rancher in Lake Elsinore and a tennis coach. He retired in 1981 from Victoria Club in Riverside. He attended school in Santa Monica and excelled in pole vault and tennis.
Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Walker, of Sun City; daughters Linda Barlogio of Corona, Suzy Howe of Millerton, Pa., and Sally Hanks of Sun City; sister Maybelle Cross; brother Bill Walker; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Canyon Lake Community Church. His body is to be donated to Loma Linda anatomy department.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Voice of Christ Ministries, Nenanna, Alaska or Wycliffe Missionaries, Dick and Carold John in Dallas, Texas.

Shyrl Haney, 84

FALLBROOK - Shyrl Mabel Haney, 84, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Vista Knoll in Vista.
Born Jan. 11, 1917, in West Bridgewater, Pa., she lived in Fallbrook for 14 years. She was a homemaker for about 50 years.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Vista, a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Brandford, Pa., and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Haney was preceded in death by her husband, John James Haney Sr., in 1983.
She is survived by sons Robert Clyde Haney of Fallbrook and John James Haney Jr. of Salem, Ohio; daughter Shyrl M. Glisan of Oceanside; sisters Alice Jean Robison of N. Hollywood and Naomi Ruth Herbert of Aliquippa, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at Berry-Bell & Hall Fallbrook Mortuary. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at McKean Memorial Park Chapel in Bradford, Pa. Burial will follow at McKean Memorial Park.

David Groh, 67

SAN DIEGO - David Robert Groh, 67, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Sharp Memorial Hospital, of heart failure.
Born March 22, 1933, in Bloomington, Ind., he lived in San Diego.
He was a vice president of production for Vanard Lithographers and served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Essex during the Korean War.
Mr. Groh is survived by his wife, Maxine Hazel Beth Groh of San Diego; sons David and Donald, both of San Diego and Dennis of Valley Center; daughter Debra Parkin of Denver; brothers Daniel of Waukegan, Ill., and Frank of Springville, Ind.; and six grandchildren.
A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to North Clairemont United Methodist Church, 4570 Mt. Herbert Ave., San Diego, CA.
Cremation Services Inc. is handling arrangements.

Roberto Valdez, 83

ESCONDIDO - Roberto C. Valdez, 83, died Monday, March 19, 2001, of cancer at his home.
Born Jan. 24, 1918, in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, he lived in Escondido for 38 years. He was a self-employed photographer and retired in 1985.
He was a member of San Diego Construction Union.
Mr. Valdez was preceded in death by his wife, Maria De Los Angeles in 1995.
He is survived by daughters and sons; brothers Jorge Valdez, Ernesto Valdez and Ruben Valdez, all of Mexico; sister Ernestina Valdez of Mexico, Teresa Molina of Oxnard and Lupe Valdez of Mexico; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon and a funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon today, March 21, at Resurrection Catholic Church with the Rev. David Sereno officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Virginia Moore, 78

ESCONDIDO - Virginia O. Moore, 78, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001.
Born Sept. 16, 1922, in Chicago, she lived in Escondido for five years. She was an electronic technician.
Ms. Moore is survived by sister Gwen Kline of Escondido and niece Carol McMollen of Illinois.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 17, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at a later date at Irving Park Cemetery in Chicago.

Zella Hix, 73

CARLSBAD - Zella Clara Hix, 73, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at her home.
Born Feb. 7, 1928, in Tahlequah, Okla., she lived in Carlsbad for 11 years. She was a retired hospice care taker.
Ms. Hix is survived by her daughters Gloria Soto of Oceanside and Carol Benner of Carlsbad; brothers Scott Hix of Las Vegas and Pres Hix of Laughlin, Nev.; sisters and brothers-in-law Mae and J.A. Thompson of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Joann and Ankov Knou of Lakewood; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
The family suggests memorial donations to Hospice of the North County, 2095 W. Vista Way, Suite 101, Vista, CA 92083 or the American Heart Association, 2640 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103.
