CARLSBAD - William R. Ney, 60, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in La Jolla.
Born April 17, 1940, in Philadelphia, he lived in Carlsbad for 22 years. He worked at Park Place Apartments and Bechtel.
Mr. Ney was preceded in death by his brother, Len Ney, Aug. 3, 1995; mother Elizabeth Ney on March 15, 1974; and father Elmer Ney on Sept. 19, 1973. He is survived by his wife of 24 1/2 years, Betty Ney of Carlsbad; sons Kevin Ney of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gary Tanksley of Carlsbad; daughters and sons-in-law Mr. and Mrs. James Frick of Colorado Springs and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Matken of Oceanside; sister and brother-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gregor of Mohton, Pa.; grandchildren Coni, Joey, Jacob, Megan, Jeramie and Brandon; and great-grandson Joey.
Inurnment will be at 2:30 p.m. with a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Eternal Hills Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Klauer officiating.

Joseph Smith, 81
SAN MARCOS - Joseph Smith, 81, died Friday, March 16, 2001.
Born April 8, 1919, in Quincy, Mass., he lived in San Marcos for 12 years. He was retired from General Atomic. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring as a captain. He served in World War II and the Korean War and received the Purple Heart, Silver and Bronze Stars.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 34 years, Harriet L. Smith of San Marcos.
The family will gather for a private memorial. Interment
will be at 12:30 Wednesday, March 28, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.

Blanche Weh, 97
VISTA - Blanche Weh, 97, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001.
Born Nov. 28, 1903, in Delba, Texas, she lived in Vista for 30 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Mountain View Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Mrs. Weh is survived by her brother, William Belew of Oceanside.
No services are planned.

Edna Mamake, 89
PALA - Edna Frances Mamake, 89, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Escondido.
Born May 11, 1911, in Pala, she lived in Pala for 89 years. She also lived in Los Angeles while owning a home in Pala. She was a homemaker for 70 years.
Ms. Mamake is survived by her adopted daughter, Jane Mamake Holzmann of Sacramento; sisters Georgiana M. Omish Viveros and Alice V. Omish McEnespy of Rincon Reservation; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation and viewing is scheduled from 4 p.m. today, March 25, with rosary recited at 7 p.m. at Rincon Tribal Hall. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 26, at Rincon Tribal Hall. Burial will follow at Rincon Tribal Cemetery.

Duke F. Estes
Informal funeral rites were held March 22, for Duke F. Estes, 48, in Auckland, New Zealand, led by his long-time friend, Fay Wouk, of Auckland University and Duke's faculty colleagues and students. He died March 15, while mountain-climbing on his vacation. He previously had hiked mountain trails in California, Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Azerbaijan, Canada, North Africa, Nepal and Tibet. His ashes were scattered at sea.
Estes was born June 6, 1952, in La Jolla, son of Dr. Jack R. Estes and the late Ruthanna Duke Estes of Carlsbad. An honor student in Carlsbad schools, he earned a National Merit Scholarship upon graduation from Carlsbad High School in 1970. In early school days he was in demand as a lecturer on dinosaurs. He played piano, clarinet and xylophone in school and community bands and orchestras and took leading roles in school and community plays and musicals.
Estes earned a bachelor's degree in English at New College, Fla., then a master's degree in Arabic languages at Shiraz University, Iran. He was professor of languages at Mashad University, Iran until the revolution overthrowing the Shah, escaping into Afghanistan with the aid of loyal students. He taught briefly in India and Japan before returning to the U.S.A.
Estes earned a master's degree in foreign languages at UCLA, then served as professor of languages at Kuwait University at Safat, Beida University, Libya and Riyadh University, Saudi Arabia. For the past 10 years he was language professor at Krirk and Thammasat Universities, Bangkok, Thailand. He also wrote for many international social and educational journals.
Estes is survived by his father, of Carlsbad; sister Susan L. Estes of Chico; nieces Jennifer and Catherine Osby and nephew Christopher Osby of Chico; and cousins Donald Estes of Vina, Vicki Moore of La Jolla, Frankie Randolph of Lakewood, Kathryn Parham and Grace Brisco of Sheridan, Texas, Rada Lou Kamp of Jackson, Mo., and Virginia Phelps of Burfordville, Mo.
Warren Rooks Field, 77
Warren Rooks Field, 77, a retired poultry and avocado rancher for 30 years, died March 19, 2001, at his home in Carmel, after a long bout with Parkinson's and a shorter battle with Merkel cell cancer.
He was born Aug. 12, 1923, in New York City and graduated from Blair Academy in New Jersey in 1943, and attended the University of Miami in Florida. As a youth, Warren "Bomber" Field was a competitive athlete and a champion boxer earning the coveted "Golden Gloves."
During World War II he served in the United States Marine Corps Third Division, first as a swimming survival instructor and at the end of the war on Guam and in China.
In 1951, Mr. Field met and married
his wife of 50 years, Judy and settle in Escondido where he started and owned his poultry ranch of 50,000 egg laying hens and 10 acres of Haas avocado trees. He and Judy lived in Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe and Rancho Bernardo before moving to Carmel in 1988. He enjoyed fishing on the Kern and Rogue rivers and surf fishing at Del Mar beach.
Mr. Field leaves his wife, two sons, Steve Field of Redondo Beach, Dan Field of Carmel, and daughter, Carrie Busch of Hayden Lake, Idaho and seven grandchildren.
His ashes will be scattered off Point Lobos and services will be held at that time.

Joseph Lupica, 70
Oceanside - Joseph Michael Lupica, 70, died Thursday, March 22, 2001.
Born August 24, 1930, in Jamaica, N.Y., he lived in Oceanside for three years. He was a retired design engineer for National Steel and Ship Building Co. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948-49.
Mr. Lupica is survived by his son Michael Lupica of Oceanside; daughter Helene Lupica of Vista; brothers Louis Lupica of Salt Lake City, Robert Lupica of Fla. and Richard Lupica of N.Y.; sister Marion O'Connor of N.Y.; and four grandchildren. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Oceanside with the Rev. John Dolan officiating. Burial will follow at 2:15 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

Robert Sarenana, 47
OCEANSIDE - Robert Edward Sarenana, 47, died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Encinitas.
Born Feb. 17, 2001, in San Diego, he lived in Oceanside for 47 years.
Mr. Sarenana was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Sanchez III, on May 2, 1992. He is survived by his mother, Gloria J. Sanchez of Solana Beach; father Robert J. Sarenana of Oregon; brothers and sister-in-law Jimmy and Johnny Sarenana of Solana Beach, Larry and Martha Perez of Oceanside, and Frank and Sophia Gastelum of Vista; sisters and brother-in-law Evelyn and Joe Betancourt of Oceanside and Cindy Gastelum of Vista; nieces and nephews Christopher, Jimmy, Richard, Tammy, Daniel, Salina , Gloria, Joey, Anthony, Alicia, Rudy, Jennifer, Irene, Raymond, Johnny, Carmen and Fabian; 14 great-nieces and nephews; Uncle David; cousin David Jr. and wife Christine; and goddaughter Emily Redugo.
Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. today, March 27 with rosary recited at 6 p.m. at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at the church with interment following at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Jack Frenette, 73
SAN MARCOS - Jack Eugene Frenette, 73, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in Escondido, of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Born Aug. 30, 1927, in Portland, Ore., he lived in San Marcos and California for 48 years. He had been a custodian for Escondido School District for five years. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years as a AFCM. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for the period 1971 to 1972. He also served on the USS Constellation among other aircraft carriers. He was an avid jigsaw and crossword puzzle solver. He was involved in the Widow and Widowers Club.
Mr. Frenette is survived by his wife of four years, Dorothea "Dolly" Frenette of San Marcos; son Ronne L. Frenette of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law Jacquelyn and Jerry Collins of Oakhurst; stepdaughter Barbara McClure and husband Tim; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A private cremation and scattering at sea will take place.

Ethel Shultz, 91
ESCONDIDO - Ethel May Strong Shultz, 91, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001.
Born Jan. 18, 1910, in Youngstown, Ohio, she lived in Escondido for 25 years. She lived in California since 1936. She was an active gardener and enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing. She was a past president of the Palms Women's Club in W. Los Angeles and a member of the Order of the Amaranth in Escondido.
Mrs. Shultz was preceded in death by son Henry R. Shultz. She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Frank R. Shultz of Escondido; sons Frank D. Shultz of Wellington, Nev., and Charles H. Shultz of Victorville; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Escondido Masonic Center with the Order of the Amaranth officiating.

Bobby Williams, 67
ESCONDIDO - Bobby L. Williams, 67, died Monday, March 26, 2001.
Born Sept. 11, 1933, in Kansas, Okla., he lived in Escondido for 34 years.
He was a self-employed general contractor.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his brother, Benny Williams in 1979, and daughter Rhonda Williams in 1980.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Norma L. Williams of Escondido; son Edward Williams of Escondido; daughter Linda Crouch of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; brother Billy Kay Williams of Henry, Ill.; and grandchildren Bethany and Amy Williams of Escondido.
A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Neighborhood Community Church with the Rev. Dan Campbell officiating.

ESCONDIDO - Rose Levy Alperson, 88, died Friday, March 23, 2001.
Born Feb. 9, 1913, in Greystone, Conn., she lived in Escondido for one year.
She was retired from a Real Estate company that she owned for 10 years.
She was a former member of Temple Beth Shalom Sisterhood in Sun City, Ariz., a former member of Hadassah Organization, Sun City Chapter of Ort, Sun City, and the Ludmir Organization in Hartford, Conn.
Mrs. Alperson was preceded in death by her husband, Irving I. Alperson, in 1991.
She is survived by sons Dr. Burton L. Alperson of Los Angeles, Dr. Philip A. Alperson of Philadelphia and Dr. Jay R. Alperson of Escondido; and one grandchild.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 28, at Sunland Memorial Park and Mortuary Chapel in Sun City, Ariz.

Robert Rabehl, 84
RAMONA - Robert G. Rabehl, 84, died Thursday, March 22, 2001.
Born March 6, 1917, in Milwaukee, he lived in Ramona for 20 years.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a B-24 pilot.
He had been employed for Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery as a supervisor for 37 years.
He was active in the Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and later at Ramona Lutheran Church.
He was a member of Ramona Ramblers and enjoyed historical things, was a sports fan and a coin collector.
Mr. Rabehl was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Emma L. Rabehl in Nov. 1990.
He is survived by his sons Richard C. Rabehl and Thomas W. Rabehl, both of Ramona; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, March 30, at the Ramona Lutheran Church with the Rev. Warren Naegele officiating.
Burial will take place at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Milwaukee.

Born July 31, 1935, in Covingington, Ky. she lived in Vista for 32 years. She was an avid sailor, loved gardening and the outdoors.
Mrs. Bartley was preceded in death by her father Abram Reed and mother Norma Reed.
She is survived by her companion, James Murtland III of Oceanside; son Charles Bartley Jr. of Vista; daughters and sons-in-law Valorie and David Warner of Vista; Victoria Nelson of Vista; Vanessa Bartley of Huntsville, Ala., Venita and Greg Wilson of Roland, Okla., and Valinda and Rex Cranfill of Vista; sister and brother-in-law Diane and Lewis Pratt III of Huntsville, Ala.; and eight grandchildren.
