ESCONDIDO - Bertrand Atherton, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Life Care Center of Escondido.
Born Oct. 2, 1921, in Zanesville, Ohio, he lived in Escondido for 10 years. He retired from various jobs in 1980.
Mr. Atherton is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Louis McCubbins of MIchigan Center, Mich.; brother Billy Atherton of Blackman Corners, Mich.; sister Thelma Clay of Lebanon, Mo.; grandchildren Willard O'Neil of Parma, Mich., and Tracy Jonas, Sherry Fenton and Renee Crawley, all of Jackson, Mich.; and great-grandchildren McKenzie Ann Marie, Austin Christian Lee Jonas and Claudia Diane Jonas, all of Jackson.
A private cremation is planned.

Dustin Newell, 20
RAMONA - Dustin Newell, 20, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, in an auto accident near Gila Bend, Ariz.
Born Oct. 11, 1979, he lived his entire life in Ramona. He graduated 7th in the Ramona High School class of 1997 and played clarinet in the band. He was a member of the Ramona Eagles traveling soccer team. He attended UCSD, majoring in chemistry and was a member of the waterski team. He attended Georg August Universitaet in Goettingen, Germany during his junior year. He was an intern research assistant at a DuPont pharmaceutical lab in La Jolla.
Mr. Newell is survived by his parents, Kirk and Trudie Newell; brother Garret Newell; grandparents Martha Kathriner of Ramona and Helen and Dean Newell of Murrieta; and girlfriend Ruth Legg of Ramona.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. A committal service will follow at Nuevo Memory Gardens with a reception following at the church hall.
The family suggests memorial donations to UC Regents Waterski Fund for a Dustin Newell Memorial, c/o Scott Berndes, 9500 Gilman Drive, La Jolla, CA 92092-0117.

John Oetter, 89
VISTA - John B. Oetter, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born July 2, 1911, in Nebraska, he lived in Vista for two years. He was an upholsterer for Hiatt Manufacturing for 35 years.
Mr. Oetter is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maurine E. Oetter of Vista; son John Richard Oetter of Vista; daughter Kathy Delar of Vista; brother Sam Oetter of Florida; sisters Rose Hall of Nebraska, Margaret Shortt of Nevada and Mae Wantyerin of Kansas; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, Vista Chapel, with the Rev. B.D. Droegemueller officiating. A private cremation is planned.

Ina Wagner, 98
VISTA - Ina Mary Wagner, 98, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at Pleasant Care of Vista.
Born Sept. 21, 1902, in Newmansville, Tenn., she lived in Vista for 21 years. She was a salesperson for Woodward & Lathrop Department Store for 15 years and a member of the United Methodist Church of Vista.
Ms. Wagner is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Harold Schubert of Vista.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 4, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ken Johnstone officiating.
The family suggests memorial donations to the United Methodist Church, 157 Lado de Loma Drive, Vista, Ca 92083.

Aleen Walls, 70
ESCONDIDO - Aleen Jane Walls, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in Escondido.
Born Jan. 5, 1930, in League, Texas, she lived in Escondido for 33 years. She was a medical secretary before retiring in 1997. She was a member of Hidden Valley Christian Church and Emmanuel Faith Community Church. She was a volunteer voter's polling representative and was interested in Bible study, travel and beach camping.
Ms. Walls is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Alan Lewis and Cindy and Ed Barrett, all of Escondido, and Cathy and Ted Hudson of Valley Center; brother Frank Malek of Portland, Texas; sister Margaret Newlin of Corpus Christi, Texas; and grandchildren Wade, Mandy and Lindsey Lewis, Jessica, Aaron, Travis and Dustin Barrett and Hollis Hudson.
Viewing will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Hidden Valley Christian Church in Escondido. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m., with the Rev. Henry Wilson officiating. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Helen Young, 87
ESCONDIDO - Helen Mary Young, 87, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born March 2, 1913, in Rochester, N.Y., she lived in Escondido for two years. She was a PBX Operator at O'Conner Hospital before retiring in 1969.
Mrs. Young was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Burton Young, in 1997. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Joyce Young of San Leandro and Beverly and Mark Bancroft of Escondido; and granddaughter Sabrina Young of Oakland.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary Chapel. A private burial will take place at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Eleanor Snider, 89
SUN CITY - Eleanor Marie Snider, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, of cardiac arrest at her home.
Born Jan. 1, 1911, she lived in Sun City for 35 years. She graduated from high school and was a homemaker. She was a member of the 50-50 Club, St. Vincent Ferrar Catholic Church in Sun City for 35 years and Ave Maria Mission Circle. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and doing crafts for church and working with missions.
Mrs. Snider was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Snider. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Snider of Chino; brother Robert Norman Hoge of Riverside; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 5, at Evans Brown Sun City Mortuary. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at St. Vincent Ferrar Catholic Church in Sun City. Burial will take place at 12:45 p.m. following the Mass at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 4.

Louis DeCaro, 71
CANYON LAKE - Louis DeCaro, 71, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at his home.
Born Nov. 1, 1929, in Agawum, Mass., he lived in Canyon Lake for 25 years. He was superintendent of operations for the Daily Breeze newspaper in Torrance for 25 years and enjoyed building houses, newspaper consulting and traveling.
Mr. DeCaro is survived by his wife, Mena DeCaro of Canyon Lake; daughters Jean Haddad of Caldwell, N.J., Helene Rosenburg of New Jersey and Charlene Lewis of Capistrano Beach; sister Elaine Schade of San Fernando Valley; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Evans Brown Sun City Mortuary. Burial will take place at Green Hills Memorial Park in San Pedro.

Robert Wilson, 63
SUN CITY - Robert Richard Wilson, 63, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, of a heart attack, at Menifee Valley Medical Center.
Born Oct. 3, 1936, in East Liverpool, Ohio, he lived in Sun City for one year. He was a salesman for Trio Auto Parts in Fullerton for 38 years and enjoyed painting, gardening and bingo.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Elsie Wilson of Sun City; son Michael Wilson of Edmonds, Wash.; stepsons Darrel Woodside of Sun City, Gary Woodside of Cypress, Bryan Woodside of Los Alamitos and Robert Woodside of Fullerton; daughters Terri Scannell of La Mirada and Pam Highland of Foothill Ranch; sister Bonna Jean Magill of East Liverpool; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Miller-Jones Mortuary Inc.

Timothy Martin, 51
LAKE ELSINORE - Timothy Wayne Martin, 51, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, of cardiovascular disease, at his home.
Born Dec. 15, 1948, in Detroit, he lived in Lake Elsinore for 11 years. He was a construction equipment salesperson for 25 years and served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969 in Hawaii.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 27 years, Beverly Martin of Lake Elsinore; sons Darryl Martin of Hemet and Chris Martin of Lake Elsinore; brother Terry Martin of Anaheim; and grandchildren Kiara and Tyler.
Visitation was held Monday, Oct. 2, at Valley Funeral Home. A graveside service followed at Riverside National Cemetery.

Arthur Turner, 84
SUN CITY - Arthur Turner, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at his home.
Born in Clarksburg, W.Va., he lived in Sun City for 12 years. He was a construction superintendent in Orange for 40 years and a member of the Local Carpenter's Union #803. He served in the U.S. Navy, receiving nine Stars and a Purple Heart. He enjoyed rose gardening, golfing and baseball.
Mr. Turner is survived by his daughter, Sandra Lea Parker of Wilmington, N.C.; sons John Turner and Willard Curry, both of Sun City; brother Robert Turner of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; sister Dolores Seright of Whittier; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 4, at Evans Brown Sun City Mortuary. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Riverside National Cemetery.

Eugene Kenyon, 85
PERRIS - Eugene Larue Kenyon, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, of congestive heart failure, at Ember Care in Perris.
Born Nov. 2, 1914, in Pierre, S.D., he lived in Sun City for 10 years. He was a mechanical engineer for Aero Jet General Corporation for 22 years, serving as treasurer of the recreation and welfare program, and worked in the Canyon Lake Post Office after retirement. He enjoyed number puzzles and bingo and was a member of the Long Beach Elks Lodge #888.
Mr. Kenyon is survived by his wife, Dorothy Kenyon of Sun City; daughter Judi Collins of Canyon Lake; sons Kenneth Kenyon of Sun City, Garry Kenyon of Corona and Dennis Kenyon of Gardnerville, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Sept. 30, at Canyon Lake Community Church.

Alfred Polchow, 85
OCEANSIDE - Alfred C. Polchow, 85, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 28, 1915, in New York, he lived in Oceanside for 20 years. He worked for Caltrans before retiring in 1974. He served in the U.S. Air Force, retiring July 31, 1963, as a major. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association.
Mr. Polchow was preceded in death by his son, Richard Polchow, in 1985. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion Polchow of Oceanside; son and daughter-in-law Alfred and Diane Polchow of Redlands; and grandchildren O. Christian and Darren Scott Polchow.

Elizabeth Rocke, 95
FALLBROOK - Elizabeth Ford Rocke, 95, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, of a stroke, at Fallbrook Skilled Nursing.
Born April 25, 1905, in Chicago, she lived in Fallbrook for 15 years. She was a secretary and treasurer for the Open Hearth Combustion Co. of Chicago before retiring.
Mrs. Rocke was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert J. Rocke, in 1970. She is survived by her nephews, Arthur Sederholm of Fallbrook, David Ford of Topeka, Kan., and Michael Ford of Reedsburg, Wis.; brother and sister-in-law Harold and Victoria Ford of San Rafael; and sister Evelyn Morrison of New London, Conn.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned.

Anita deVertevil, 76
ENCINITAS - Anita J. deVertevil, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, in La Jolla.
Born July 10, 1924, in Halifax, Canada, she lived in Encinitas for 20 years. She worked for Knorr Candle Factory before retiring in 1996.
Mrs. deVertevil was preceded in death by her husband, Gervais deVertevil, in 1979; and her son, Derek deVertevil, in 1995. She is survived by her son, Steven deVertevil of Trinidad, West Indies; daughter Janet deVertevil of Cardiff; sister Janet Bernecker of British Columbia; and grandchildren Ryan deVertevil and Drew deVertevil, both of Trinidad, and Kelly Planche of Eugene, Ore., and Brent Planche of Cardiff.
A private cremation is planned.

Raymond Burrows, 79
SAN MARCOS - Raymond B. Burrows, 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, of heart failure, at Scripps Hospital, Encinitas.
Born Sept. 7, 1921, in East Los Angeles, he lived in San Marcos for 10 years. He worked for Chrysler before retiring in 1974 and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a member of Elks Lodge #1968 and St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church.
Mr. Burrows was preceded in death by his daughter, Rosalie Sprague, on March 1, 1999; and his wife, Dorothy Burrows, in October 1986. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Lucille L. Burrows of San Marcos; son Peter Bono of St. Peters, Mo.; daughters and sons-in-law Tina and Don Overback of Carlsbad, Pat and Don Durand of Chesterfield, Mo., and Lou Ann and Frank Fucaloro of St. Peters; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A Mass was celebrated Thursday, Oct. 5, at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, with the Rev. Donald Coleman officiating. A private cremation is planned and interment will take place at a later date at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Heart Association, Attn. Donation Department, 1710 Gilbreth Road, Burlingame, CA 94010.

Lillian Dobbins, 92
VISTA - Lillian H. Dobbins, 92, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, in Vista.
Born Aug. 6, in Jackson, Ohio, she lived in Vista for 36 years. She was a homemaker and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Oceanside.
Mrs. Dobbins is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Harry R. and Linda Dobbins of Vista; niece Ernestine Shore and husband Alex of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Kathleen Brookmole and husband Mark of Oceanside and Geoff Dobbins and wife Kelly of San Mateo; and great-grandchild Zachary Brookmole.
A private graveside service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego.
The family suggests memorial donations to a charity of choice.
