Nellie Harris, 80

ESCONDIDO - Nellie Sylvia Harris, 80, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in Escondido.

Born March 2, 1920, in Kelowna, British Columbia, she lived in San Diego County for 33 years. She was an accountant for the civil service for 20 years before retiring.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jack Harris of Escondido; sons Stephen Harris of Maine, Ronald Harris of San Diego and Michael Harris of Hemet; daughter Marilyn Short of Arizona; sisters Delphine Abinger of Carson, Mabel Oliver of Long Beach and Georgia Jones of Tehachapi; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at McLeod Mortuary, Escondido Chapel. A private cremation is planned with inurnment to take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma.

Katherine Stratton, 96

SAN MARCOS - Katherine Whitney Stratton, 96. died Friday, April 7, 2000, at her home.

Born Jan. 15, 1904, in New York City, she lived in San Marcos for four years. She was a homemaker. She graduated in 1925 from Smith College in Massachusetts and was a member of the Inverness Yacht Club and past president of the Inverness Garden Club.

Mrs. Stratton was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James Malcolm Stratton. She is survived by her sons, James M. Stratton Jr. of Tahoe City and Dwight W. Stratton Sr. of Escondido; daughters Patty Katherine Stratton of L'Alfas, Spain, and Margo Whitney Peters of Port Richmond; brother Josiah Dwight of San Francisco; sister Polly Downes of Northridge; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held in Tahoe City at a later date.

The family suggests memorial donations to The Arc of San Diego, 9575 Aero Drive, San Diego, CA 92123-1803.

John Kelsay, 63

VISTA - John David Kelsay, 63, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in Fallbrook.

Born Oct. 8, 1936, in Anaheim, he lived in Vista for 39 years. He was a new car salesman for Crystal Chrysler and Bob Baker Auto and served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of Palomar Community Church.

Mr. Kelsay is survived by his wife, Kerri Kelsay of Vista; sons and daughter-in-law John Kelsay Jr. of Lakeport and Dr. Damon and Asha Kelsay of Indian Wells; stepson Ryan Barnard of San Francisco; daughters and son-in-law Lisa and Larry Escobedo of Santee, Shelly Kelsay of La Jolla, Nicole Kelsay of New York City and Kianna Kelsay and Samara Kelsay, both of Vista; brother Daniel Kelsay of Poway and Marshall Kelsay of Ramona; sister and brother-in-law Roslyn and Wayne Dozier of Fallbrook; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 14, at Dozier Ranch in Fallbrook, with the Rev. Charlie Ivans of Palomar Community Church of Vista officiating. A private family burial will take place at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Scholarship fund for Kianna and Samara Kelsay at Prudential Securities, c/o Michelle Brigman, 74-850 Hwy. 111, Indian Wells, CA 92210; or to Fallbrook Hospital Hospice, 624 E. Elder St., Fallbrook, CA 92028.

Dorothy Welton, 63

ESCONDIDO - Dorothy E. Welton, 63, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born July 8, 1936, in Jacomba, she lived in Escondido for 18 years. She did janitorial work for the city of Ventura and worked for 3-M in Ventura. She was a member of Cathedral of the Valley Foursquare Church, participating in women's outreach and choir.

Mrs. Welton was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph E. Darrow and Robert L. Karnes. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Ivan Welton of Escondido; sons Warren Daniel Welton of Escondido and Michael Tracy Welton of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters Tina Marie Welston of Castaic and Robin J. Abraham Kelly and Bryce Kelly, both of Vista; stepdaughters Dawnell Robertson and Jeannie Diane Brockman, both of Bishop; brothers Henry Albert Darrow, Robert Lee Darrow and William Henry Darrow and Jimmy Dea Karnes and Michael Foster Karnes; sisters Kathy Ann Cabral and Elsa Platino; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today, April 11, at Cathedral of the Valley Foursquare Church in Escondido.

Margaret Apte, 87

FALLBROOK - Margaret Celia Apte, 87, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, in Fallbrook.

Born July 9, 1912, in Woodstock, Conn., she lived in Fallbrook for 23 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Apte was preceded in death by her husband, Lester R. Apte, in 1994. She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Precanico of San Marcos and Peggy Zuckerman of Worcester, Mass.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A private cremation is planned.

William Carruthers, 73

OCEANSIDE - William Carruthers, 73, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, of congestive heart failure, at his home.

Born Nov. 12, 1926, in Glasgow, Scotland, he lived in Oceanside. He was director of engineering for NASA at Explosive Technology and the engineering manager for Archive Corporation before retiring, and served in the Gordon Highlanders & Royal Artillery in England.

Mr. Carruthers was preceded in death by his grandson, Harley Carruthers. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Betty Carruthers of Oceanside; sons and daughters-in-law David and Laurie Carruthers and Ron and Duwanee Carruthers; daughters and sons-in-law Deborah Carruthers, Robin and Patrick Nangle and Joany and Joe Hernandez; brother John Carruthers; sister Margaret Carr; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at San Clemente Mortuary. A funeral will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at San Clemente Mortuary. Interment icon will follow at noon at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest.

Gerald Machinski, 50

OCEANSIDE - Gerald Machinski, 50, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, of cancer, in Oceanside.

Born Jan. 27, 1950, in Edmonton, Alberta, he lived in Oceanside for 13 years. He was a self-employed consulting engineer.

Mr. Machinski is survived by his wife of 13 years, Carol Machinski of Oceanside; daughters Christina Machinski and Kathryn Machinski, both of Oceanside; brothers Albert Machinski, Richard Machinski, James Machinski and Edward Mitchell, all of Canada; and sister Marlene Hlushak of Canada.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at Mission San Luis Rey, with the Rev. Michel Gagnon officiating.

The family suggests memorial donations to UCSD Cancer Center Foundation, 9500 Gilman Drive, Suite 0658, La Jolla, CA 92093-0658.

Christine Clay, 92

SAN DIEGO - Christine W. Clay, 92, died Friday, April 7, 2000.

Born Nov. 2, 1907, in Durant, Okla., she lived in San Diego. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Church of Vista.

Mrs. Clay is survived by one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Missionary Fund, Community Church of Vista, 165 Eucalyptus Ave., Vista, CA 92083.

Elizabeth Smalley, 98

WATERTOWN, Wis. - Elizabeth M. Smalley, 98, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at Marquardt Manor in Watertown.

Born Feb. 10, 1902, in Westville, Ill., she previously lived in Escondido. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Smalley was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Smalley. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Richard Williams of Oconomowoc and Joan Elizabeth and Stephen McMahon of San Jacinto; sisters Oleta Middlemas of Georgetown, Ill., and Natalie Sincavitch of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, April 11, at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Oconomowoc. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. Burial will take place in Phoenix.

Delores Medeiros, 71

ESCONDIDO - Delores Elaine Medeiros, 71, died Sunday, April 9, 2000.

Born June 28, 1928, in Hatton, N.D., she lived in Escondido for 23 years. She was a postal clerk for civil service and the U.S. Postal Service for 10 years.

Mrs. Medeiros was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Ralph Medeiros; and her brother, Edward Olson. She is survived by her sons, Ralph Medeiros of Las Vegas, Andy Medeiros of La Mesa and Jason Medeiros of Fallbrook; daughter Kathy Bailey of Escondido; sisters Violet Medeiros of Huntington Beach, D'anne Warner of North Dakota and Shirley Sanda of Wisconsin; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, at McLeod Mortuary, Escondido Chapel. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.

Thelma Ryan-Urvan, 88

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Thelma N. Ryan-Urvan, 88, died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at her home.

Born Oct. 23, 1911, in Toledo, Ohio, she previously lived in Southern California, including Lake San Marcos. She was a secretary in several school offices and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Coeur d'Alene.

Mrs. Ryan-Urvan was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Ryan, in 1979. She is survived by her husband, Arnold Urvan of Coeur d'Alene; son Rex Ryan of Laguna Beach; daughters Noreen Stemm of Kingston, Idaho, and Roxanne Ryan of Denver; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Crosswinds Community Church in San Marcos, with the Rev. Steve Foss officiating.

Vada Richards, 85

SAN MARCOS - Vada Richards, 85, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Escondido.

Born Nov. 30, 1914, in Freemont, Neb., she lived in San Marcos for two years. She was a homemaker for 60 years.

Mrs. Richards was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin J. Richards, in 1994. She is survived by her son, Ed Richards of Laguna Hills; daughter Patricia Richards of San Marcos; sisters Betty Jo Groover of Tualatin, Ore. and Martha Pavich of Lomita; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A private cremation is planned.

The family suggests memorial donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

Aretta Schultz, 74

MURRIETA - Aretta Jane Schultz, 74, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar.

Born March 9, 1926, in Aspinwall, Pa., she lived in Murrieta for 10 years. She graduated from Aspinwall High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in home economics from Muskingum College. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peters by the Sea Presbyterian Church in Palos Verdes. She was also a member of the Women's Golf Club at The Colony in Murrieta.

Mrs. Schultz is survived by her husband, Robert Schultz of Murrieta; sons James Schultz of Encinitas and Jeffrey Schultz and Scott Schultz, both of Park City, Utah; and three grandchildren.

No service will be held. A private burial is planned.

Gloria Pattison, 77

SAN MARCOS - Gloria Pattison, 77, died Monday, March 20, 2000, at her home in San Marcos.

Born June 6, 1922, in Jamaica, she lived in North County for 30 years. She was a caterer and a member of the Church of the Brethren.

Mrs. Pattison was preceded in death by her sister, Alma Young, in 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Pattison of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Abe and Mickie Cowan of Shreveport, La.; sisters and brothers-in-law Alzier and Roy Wilham of Thomasville, Ga., and Grace and Don Pierce of Lafayette, Colo.; granddaughter Beverly Pattison; and many friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at St. Aidans Episcopal Church in Boulder, Colo.

Walter Niedermeier, 88

RANCHO BERNARDO - Walter H. Niedermeier, 88, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, from emphysema and complications of pneumonia.

Born Feb. 27, 1912, in Saginaw, Mich., he lived in Rancho Bernardo. He graduated from high school in Monroe, Mich., and earned an engineering degree from MIchigan State University in 1935. He worked for Shell Oil Co. for 27 years before retiring and was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, serving on the board of deacons from 1975 to 1977. He was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Bowling League, the Oaks North Men's Golf Club, the Oaks North Lawn Bowling Club, the Oaks North Travel Club and the Rancho Bernardo Country Club.

Mr. Niedermeier is survived by his wife, Mary Belle Niedermeier; son and daughter-in-law Bert and Angela Niedermeier of Rancho Bernardo; daughter and son-in-law Gail and Rik Santanelli of Gunnison, Colo.; sister Kathryn Hendrickson of Ann Arbor, Mich.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 10, at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church.

The family suggests memorial donations to the American Lung Association, 2750 Fourth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103; or to a charity of choice.

Jack Eisenbach, 82

SAN MARCOS - Jack A. Eisenbach, 82, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at Palomar Medical Center.

Born April 8, 1918, in Hungary, he lived in San Marcos for seven years. He was a telemarketer for Faxfoods and a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church and the Shriners.

Mr. Eisenbach is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pilar Eisenbach of San Marcos; daughter and son-in-law Regina and Angel Llorente of San Marcos; brother and sister-in-law Martin and Dorothy Eisenbach of Florida; sister Irma Eisenbach-Muller of Pennsylvania; and grandson Vincent Llorente.

A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, April 14, at St. Mark's Catholic Church.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 3160 Geneva St., Los Angeles, CA 90020.
