Richard Lee Fodor
A tragic off-road accident claimed the lives of Richard Lee Fodor and his nephew, William Fodor Jr., on Wednesday, Aug. 2, as they practiced for a weekend race south of Barstow, Calif.
Richard was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 30, 1942. He grew up in Dana Point with his brother, Bill, sons of William A. Fodor and Ann E. Fodor. He attended elementary school at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. Being an alter boy with a strong Catholic background, he attended Mater Dei in Orange County. After graduation, Richard attended Orange Coast college.
Following in his father's footsteps, he entered the nursery business. After two years, he sought out another line of work at Vic's Market in Dana Point and became a significant part of the community. He developed a strong relationship with the owner, Henry Harding, who recognized Richard's capabilities and was soon promoted to store manager. Richard married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Sue Johnson of San Clemente, during this time. Shortly afterward, they started their own family and had two sons, Rick and Mark.
In 1972, Richard had the opportunity to pursue an entrepreneurial venture. He regretfully left the market and became co-owner of Toro Disposal. With the dedication, hard work and help of his parents, Chuck and Sue Waltman, Toro Disposal became a successful business.
Richard made the decision in 1983 to retire at the age of 39. Being a loving husband and father, he dedicated his life to his family and friends and enjoyed life to the fullest.
During his retirement, he built a second home in Punta Chivato, Baja California, and enjoyed many years of fishing and time with his friends.
Richard was unable to completely stay away from business and became a co-owner of Sun Pac Containers. He also spent his spare time pursuing his passion for off-road cars and formed the Fodor Racing Team just last year.
Richard was a man who always saw the best in everyone he met. He was a mentor to so many people. There will be a void in the lives of those who knew Richard, as he touched them all so deeply.
Richard is survived by his wife, Peggy Sue Fodor; sons Rick Carl Fodor and Mark John Fodor; brother William A. Fodor Sr.; mother Ann E. Fodor; and grandchildren Camille J. and Richard R. Fodor.
