Darleene Vansant, 72
VISTA - Darleene Lasley Vansant, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at Tri-City Medical Center.
Born Aug. 25, 1927, in Long Beach, she lived n Vista for 15 years and had lived in Riverside. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Vansant was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Edwin Vansant, in 1991; and her sister, Phyllis Woodard, in 1998. She is survived by her sons, Steven Vansant of Corona, Neil Vansant of Riverside and Mark Vansant of Los Osos; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A private memorial service is planned. A private inurnment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery.

George Winch, 92
VISTA - George Edward Winch, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home.
Born July 31, 1908, in Stillwater, Minn., he lived in Vista for 25 years. He was a plant manager for Federal Cartridge Corp. for 43 years and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Winch is survived by his son, George S. Winch of Fallbrook; daughter Pamela Winch-Matoyoshi of Oceanside; and two grandchildren.
No formal service is planned. A private cremation will take place, with burial at Linwood Cemetery in Linwood, Minn.

Edward Blaes, 87
OCEANSIDE - Edward Blaes, 87, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at his home.
Born Oct. 14, 1912, in Cherryville, Kan., he lived in Oceanside for 12 years. He was a salesman and owner of an automotive paints and repair business before retiring in 1987. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Elks Club.
Mr. Blaes is survived by his wife of 29 years, Constance Blaes of Oceanside; sons Jack Olson of Utah and Jim Blaes of Atascadero; daughters Linda of South Dakota and Dolores Blaes of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 11, at Eternal Hills Chapel. Interment icon will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.
Eternal Hills Mortuary is handling arrangements.

Evelyn Kalajian, 73
RAMONA - Evelyn V. Kalajian, 73, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at a local hospital.
Born May 17, 1927, in Matoka, W.Va., she lived in Ramona for 14 years and had lived in Arcadia. She was a homemaker and enjoyed RV travel and flowers and going to the Ramona Senior Center.
Mrs. Kalajian is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ed Kalajian of Ramona; sons Jerry Kalajian of Venice and Greg Kalajian of La Mesa; and brother Troy Stinson of West Virginia.
A graveside service was held Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Nuevo Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Pete Mayfield officiating. Burial followed.

James McWhorter, 81
RAMONA - James Hugh "Old Jim" McWhorter, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, at a local convalescent hospital.
Born Sept. 24, 1918, in Glendale, he lived in Ramona since 1952. He raised turkeys and was a farm and land broker, selling to such clients as Jimmy Cagney, Bill Cagney, Ralph Bellamy and Buddy Epson. He was past president of the Ramona School Board, a member of the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, and he served as president of the local board of Realtors. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 40 years of real estate and community service to Ramona in 1993. He helped form the Ramona Water District and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, defending the Aleutian Islands. He graduated from San Diego State University with honors in 1949.
Mr. McWhorter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret McWhorter of Ramona; sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Cynthia Salow McWhorter and Arthur and MaryEllen McWhorter, all of Ramona; daughters and sons-in-law Venus Catherine Andrecht, Polly and Dr. Ron Meyers and Candy and Steve Smiley, all of Ramona, and Barbara and John Raifsnider of San Diego; grandchildren Summer Andrecht McStravick, Michael and Joshua Meyers, Nicole and Trenton Smiley; and great-grandchildren Tyler and Kaylee Meyers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Bonham Bros. & Lee Ramona Chapel. A reception will follow at the San Vicente Country Club.
The family suggests memorial donations to the San Diego Rescue Mission, 443 12th Ave., San Diego, CA 92101.

Richard Poirier, 57
ARMSTRONG, B.C. - Dr. Richard Wayne Poirier, 57, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home.
Born in 1943 in Armstrong, B.C., he lived in the Grandview Flats area. He attended Grandview Academy and studied at Canadian University in Lacombe, Alberta, at Walla Walla College in Washington and at Loma Linda University, where he completed graduate and doctoral degrees in dentistry. He enjoyed snowskiing, hockey, barefoot waterskiing and golfing. He also enjoyed collecting antiques and admired old trucks and tractors.
Dr. Poirier is survived by his mother, Eleanor Poirier of Armstrong; brother and sister-in-law Frank and Cyndi Poirier of Enderby, B.C.; stepdaughter Michelle of Visalia; grandchildren Ryan, Ashley and Chelsey; and nephews Frank Jr., Barton Wayne and Jacques.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 11, at Grandview Flats Seventh-day Adventist Church, with the Rev. Burke Heimann officiating.

Walter Brooke, 76
OCEANSIDE - Walter A. Brooke, 76, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in Oceanside.
Born Aug. 2, 1924, in Cleveland, he lived in Oceanside for seven years. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS NOA and the USS Arcadia.
Mr. Brooke was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Miller. He is survived by his wife of seven years, Mary Brooke of Oceanside; daughter Karen Brooke of New York; sister June Daniels of Florida; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Riverside National Cemetery. Interment icon will follow.
The family suggests memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, 12405 Rancho Bernardo Road, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92128; or the American Heart Association, 3640 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92101.

Stephan Fudge, 51
SAN DIEGO - Stephan Lee Fudge, 51, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in San Diego.
Born Oct. 9, 1948, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, he lived in San Diego for 13 years. He was a salesperson for Kearney Mesa Auto Sales and served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1970.
Mr. Fudge is survived by his wife of 28 years, Cary Fudge of San Diego; mother Clara Fudge of Garden Grove; father Clarence Fudge of Hawthorne; sons Michael Fudge and Jason Fudge, both of San Diego; daughters Jessica Fudge and Sarah Fudge, both of San Diego; brothers and sisters-in-law Ronald Fudge of Idaho, Rebecca Wood of San Diego and Lori and Kurt Bothner of Park City, Utah; sisters and brothers-in-law Janice and Gabe Sciolla of North Andover, Mass., Dawn and Roy Miller of Garden Grove, Marilyn Epping of Freemont and William and Ginger Wood of San Diego; and mother and father-in-law Lola and William Wood of Escondido.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 11, at Alhiser-Comer Mortuary. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Bruce Humphrey officiating. A private cremation is planned.
The family suggests memorial donations to Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church for the Cary Fudge Family Memorial Fund.

Jewel Walters, 71
RAMONA - Jewel K. Walters, 71, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2000, at her home.
Born Aug. 18, 1928, in Richmond, Va., she lived in West Palm Beach, Fla., before moving to Ramona two years ago. She was a rehabilitation counselor for 15 years.
Mrs. Walters is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Michael Gunn of Ramona; daughter Sharon Vickers of West Palm Beach; sister Patricia Kahn of Palm Beach; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held in West Palm Beach, where her cremains will be buried at Our Lady Queen of Peace Cemetery in the family plot.

Sally Berkos, 71
RANCHO BERNARDO - Sally Ann Berkos, 71, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, of acute leukemia and kidney dysfunction, at Pomerado Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1928, in Illinois, she lived in Rancho Bernardo. She was a pre-school teacher in Reseda for eight years. She attended St. Mary's School in Des Plaines, Ill., and graduated from Columbia College, majoring in creative writing. She wrote many short stories and poems and enjoyed oil painting and watercolors, collecting antique dolls, Valentines and paper dolls.
Mrs. Berkos is survived by her husband of 50 years, Peter Berkos of Rancho Bernardo; stepchildren Peter Berkos Jr., Linda Berkos and Terry Berkos; seven stepgrandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Unity Way Church of Vista, with the Rev. Charles L. Kepler officiating. Inurnment will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, with the Rev. Kepler officiating.

Bettie McManus, 70
SAN DIEGO - Bettie Jean McManus, 70, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at her home.
Born Jan. 27, 1930, in Escondido, she lived in San Diego for 30 years. She was a model in department stores. She was a 1948 graduate of Escondido High School and a member of the Escondido J.C. Wives.
Mrs. McManus was preceded in death by her husband, Allen McManus, in 1970. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Dana and Barb McManus of Escondido and Evan and Linda McManus of Clairemont; daughter and son-in-law Colleen and Charles Casale of Arizona; and grandchildren Chandra Dutcher, Craig Dutcher, Charlie Casale, Ryan McManus, Brook McManus, Dominique McManus and Chance McManus.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Samuel Street Park in Pacific Beach.

Eva Flores, 35
MURRIETA - Eva Muniz Flores, 35, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, as the result of a car accident, in Gary, Ind.
Born Nov. 16, 1964, in Gary, she lived in Murrieta. She served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the PTA for E. Hale Curran Elementary School. She was a human resource assistant at Plant Equipment Inc. in Temecula.
Mrs. Flores is survived by her husband, Daniel Flores of Murrieta; son William Flores of Murrieta; mother Rosa Muniz of Gary; eight sisters and five brothers, all of Indiana and Illinois; mother-in-law Margarita Flores of Illinois; father-in-law Ramon Flores of Indiana; sisters-in-law Sandy and Mark Fry and Nancy and Robert Vargas, all of Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 10, at Holy Angels Cathedral in Gary. A private cremation is planned.

Matthew Flores, 7
MURRIETA - Matthew Eric Flores, 7, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, as the result of a car accident, in Gary, Ind.
Born April 9, 1993, in San Diego, he lived in Murrieta. He was a student at E. Hale Curran Elementary School.
Matthew is survived by his father, Daniel Flores of Murrieta; brother William Flores of Murrieta; grandparents Margarita Flores of Illinois and Ramon Flores and Rosa M. Muniz of Indiana.
A funeral service was held Thursday, Aug. 10, at Holy Angels Cathedral in Gary. A private cremation is planned.

Valentine Foth, 73
TEMECULA - Valentine Foth, 73, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Mountain View Park in Chino.
Born March 14, 1927, in Fingal, N.D., he lived in Chino from 1978 to 1986, when he moved to Temecula. He was a self-employed general contractor with Val Foth & Son, Chino, before retiring. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 12, in Pasadena.
Mr. Foth is survived by his daughter, Valeri Sexton of Temecula; son Rodney Foth of Wildomar; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
A private inurnment will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Fingal.
The family suggests memorial donations to Lake Elsinore Animal Friends, PO Box 1143, Lake Elsinore, CA 92531.

Russell Lamm, 59
VISTA - Russell Kent Lamm, 59, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, of kidney cancer, at his home.
Born Nov. 17, 1940, in Lindenhurst, N.Y., he lived in Vista for 23 years. He was a telecommunications technician for Tel Com Tec in San Marcos and had retired from AT&T. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962 in the Panama Canal Zone.
Mr. Lamm was preceded in death by his sister, Arline Guth, in 1971; and his mother and father Florence and William Lamm. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lynn Lamm of Vista; son David Lam of Glendora; daughter Stephanie Riedeman of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; brothers Willis Lamm of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and Marshall Lamm of Lindenhurst; and grandchildren Gwen Riedeman and Sam Riedeman, both of Wheat Ridge.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased.
The family suggests memorial donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025; or blood donations.

Vaasoaia Semo, 70
OCEANSIDE - Vaasoaia Semo, 70, died Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000, at his home.
Born Feb. 28, 1930, in American Samoa, he lived in Oceanside for 30 years. He was a heavy equipment operator for the International Union of Operating Engineers and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Semo was preceded in death by his daughter, Lawana K. Semo, in 1963. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dolores Semo of Oceanside; son Timothy Taa Semo of Oceanside; brothers and sisters-in-law Mosooi and Lua Mapu and Semo and Fau Semo Jr., all of American Samoa; and sister and brother-in-law Mary and Tapuni Misa of Oceanside.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Oceanside Lighthouse Worship Center, with the Rev. Carol Riggins officiating. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the worship center. Burial will follow at Eternal Hills Memorial Park.

Nancy Jane Hunt, 87
CARLSBAD - Nancy Jane Hunt, 87, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at her home.
Born April 1, 1913, in Seattle, she lived in Carlsbad for 15 years. She was a travel agent before retiring. She graduated from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles and attended San Diego State.
Mrs. Hunt is survived by her daughter, Kay Hunt Everett of Diamond Bar; daughter and son-in-law Barbara Hunt Mead and Dr. Donald Mead of Carlsbad; grandchildren Robin and Lee McElfresh of Grand Junction, Colo., Randy and Jody Mead of Rochester, Mich., Mark and Debbie Hunt of Tustin, Drs. Laura and Mark Clapper of Coronado, Elva and Al Pulido of Oceanside and Eric and Sara Mead of Oceanside; and 15 great-grandchildren.
No service will be held at the request of the deceased. A private cremation is planned with cremains to be scattered at sea.
The family suggests memorial donations to Children's Discovery Museum, 300 Carlsbad Village Drive, Suite 103, Carlsbad, CA 92008.
