Robert Neuman

Native of Sweden

A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 15, for Robert Fritz Neuman, a Menlo Park resident for 47 years who died January 4. He was 85.
The service will start at 1 p.m. in Redwood Chapel at 847 Woodside Road in Redwood City.

Mr. Neuman was born in Goteborg, Sweden, and in 1957 came to the United States, where he worked two jobs and studied electronics to become an electronic technician. He worked for Ampex Corp. in Redwood City for 16 years.

Mr. Neuman was a music lover who made his own tapes, especially big-band and Hawaiian music, say family members. He also enjoyed soccer and played with the Grasshoppers team in Menlo Park.

Mr. and Mrs. Neuman belonged to the Swedish Lodge, Lindberg #494, and the family enjoyed celebrating Swedish traditions with friends, say family members.

Mr. Neuman is survived by his wife, Majken L.V. Neuman; son Gary R. Neuman; daughter Eva-Lena Lyssand; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth D. Juvet

Former nurse

Ruth D. "Bev" Juvet, a resident of Menlo Park since 1945, died at her home on January 4.
Ms. Juvet was born in Sausalito and grew up in Mill Valley.

She graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. After her children were grown, she returned to nursing in 1957.

She led a varied life with many interests, say family members.

She is survived by her three sons, Nicholas Juvet Jr. of Stateline, Nevada, Michael Juvet of Hollister, and Peter Juvet of Issaquah, Washington; daughter Elizabeth S. Neumann of Palo Alto; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Private services have been held.

Edward Brown

Southern Pacific executive

Edward Nevin Brown of Mt. Shasta, a resident of Menlo Park from 1956 to 2003, died January 14. He was 86.
Mr. Brown was born in Philadelphia. An orphan at age 4, he grew up in the Girard College for Boys.

After graduating, he joined the Philadelphia office of Southern Pacific Co. At the same time, he attended evening classes at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1963 he took part in Harvard University's advanced management program.

In 1941, Mr. Brown was promoted to chief clerk for Southern Pacific in Atlanta. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of captain.

After the war, Mr. Brown returned to Southern Pacific, working in St. Louis, Chicago, New York and San Francisco. He held various executive positions, including general traffic manager of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, assistant vice president of traffic of Southern Pacific, and vice president of St. Louis Southwestern Railway. He retired in 1982 after 47 years of service.

In retirement, Mr. Brown volunteered at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Clinic, and made deliveries for Meals on Wheels in Menlo Park. He was a member of Los Altos Golf and Country Club, SIRS and the Southern Pacific Executive Officers' Association.

Mr. Brown is survived by his son, Stephen Nevin Brown of Mt. Shasta, and a grandson. His wife of 52 years, Marjorie "Midge" Brown, preceded him in death.

Graveside services were held. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice, 914 Pine St., Mount Shasta, CA 96067-2143.

Dorothy Potter

Longtime Menlo Park resident

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 7, at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church for Dorothy Wunderlich Potter, who died January 18 at The Sequoias retirement community in Portola Valley. She was 88.
Ms. Potter was born in Cicero, Illinois, and attended the University of Kentucky College of Commerce. She was active in drama, sang in choral groups, wrote for the campus newspaper and yearbook, and was elected president of Mortar Board senior honorary society. She postponed her senior year to marry Morton Potter, who was graduating that year.

After living in Schenectady, New York, and Springfield, Pennsylvania, the couple moved to Menlo Park in 1965. Ms. Potter graduated with a fine arts degree from San Jose State University. She joked that she had been a college senior for 40 years.

Ms. Potter was a member of the Woodside-Atherton Auxiliary to Children's Hospital at Stanford, an elder at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Presbyterian Women's Organization.

She also enjoyed painting, bridge, music, travel and golf, which she played at Sharon Heights Golf and Country Club, say family members.

Ms. Potter is survived by her husband, Morton; daughter Linda Lessen; sons Gary and Jeffrey Potter; sister Betty Estes; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Dell Scott Piper

Investment executive

Friends are invited to a memorial service at St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Menlo Park on Saturday, January 29, at 3 p.m. for Dell Scott Piper.
A resident of Menlo Park since 1959, she died at home January 5. She was 92.

During her 46 years in Menlo Park, Ms. Piper was active in the community, serving as a member of the Phi Beta Phi Alumnae Club, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Palo Alto Auxiliary for the Children's Hospital at Stanford, Menlo Park-Atherton Newcomers Club, Holy Trinity Parish Youth Group, San Francisco Symphony Foundation and Peninsula Symphony Auxiliary.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Bede's Episcopal Church.

In 1963 Ms. Piper went to work as an investment executive at Birr, Wilson & Co. In 1975 she joined Dean Witter Reynolds, where she worked until she was 72.

At age 74 she acquired an insurance license, specializing in long-term care policies. She formed Dell Piper Insurance Services, did consulting with State Farm Insurance Co., and continued working until age 90.

Ms. Piper was born in Rugby, North Dakota. She graduated from the University of North Dakota, where she majored in mathematics and was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.

While in college, she met Dean Piper, whom she married in 1937. The couple lived in Chicago, North Dakota and Colorado Springs before moving to Menlo Park in 1959.

Ms. Piper is survived by her three children, Kay Pride of Denver, Mary Sheehan and Louise Piper Hoyos of Menlo Park; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband, Dean, died in 1965.

Donations may be made to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, 770 Welch Road, Suite 350, Palo Alto CA 94304.

Jacqueline MacKay

Tennis enthusiast

Jacqueline "Jackie" S. MacKay of Portola Valley, whose husband, Sandy, founded Alpine Hills Tennis and Swim Club, died of complications from cancer on January 17. She was 83.
Ms. MacKay was born in San Luis Obispo and grew up in Fresno, where she was a honor student and star member of the Fresno High School tennis team. In 1938 the family moved to Alameda, where she met Alexander "Sandy" MacKay on the Washington Park tennis courts.

Married in 1943, the couple lived in Palo Alto, Menlo Park and Portola Valley until Sandy's death in 1990.

Mr. MacKay founded and built Alpine Hills Swim Tennis Club in 1958 and the couple was often seen playing on its courts with friends. They also lived next door to the club.

Ms. MacKay enjoyed playing cards and played cribbage with her son, Norman, once a week. She loved a good mystery, the daily crossword puzzle and bridge problem in the newspaper, her cats, Joe Montana and Andre Agassi, say family members.

Ms. MacKay is survived by her son Norman MacKay of Menlo Park, daughter Barbara J. Stever of Medford, Oregon; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

At her request, no funeral services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were under the direction of the Neptune Society with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Menlo Park.

Mariella Unnevehr

Community volunteer

Mariella "Scotty" Mossman Wolf Unnevehr, a Menlo Park resident for many years, died March 5 at Pilgrim Haven Retirement Community in Los Altos. She was 87.
Ms. Unnevehr was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from UCLA in 1946. A former personnel manager with Southwest Airways in San Francisco and West Los Angeles, she also worked as a buyer for the Emporium in San Francisco.

Ms. Unnevehr was a former president of the Menlo-Atherton branch of the American Association of University Women and a board member of the Stanford Mothers Club. She was active in political efforts, scouting and fundraising for the National Parkinson's Foundation and other health-related associations, say family members. She also served as a Pink Lady at Stanford Hospital.

Her husband of 38 years, Rear Admiral Clarence Unnevehr, U.S. Naval Reserve, died in 1989. She was previously married to Dr. Clare Wolf.

She is survived by her son, Stephen Wolf of Los Angeles; daughter Laurian Unnevehr of Champaign, Illinois; and brothers Frank D. Mossman of Vancouver, Washington, and John Mossman of Spokane, Washington.

Private services were to be held, with Burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The family prefers donations to the Parkinson's Institute, 1170 Morse Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94089. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller Hapgood & Tinney in Palo Alto.

Lillian Fishman

Longtime Menlo Park resident

Lillian Fishman, a resident of Menlo Park for 45 years, died March 3 in Menlo Park at age 78.
A native of Philadelphia, she met her future husband in San Francisco, and they were married in 1953.

She enjoyed socializing and volunteering at the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto, which she did for 25 years.

Ms. Fishman is survived by her son, David A. Fishman of San Jose; daughter Devora Ann Weinapple of Menlo Park; sister Ann Feinstein of San Francisco; and two grandchildren. Her husband, Norman Fishman, preceded her in death.

Thomas Stephens

Former business executive

Thomas Mattei Stephens, a 50-year resident of Menlo Park, died March 4 at Stanford Medical Center. He was 85.
Mr. Stephens was born in Woodland, California. He was a graduate of the class of 1942 at UC Berkeley, where he met his wife, Kathryn Rushfort, and became president of Zeta Psi fraternity.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy officers' training program, spending his first months at MIT learning the emerging field of radar. He served in several major naval battles in the Pacific during World War II and was discharged with the rank of lieutenant.

During his business career, he was service manager for Ford Motor Company's Richmond plant. He started an automatic garage door manufacturing business, and later became president of the Dohrmann Division of Envirotech in Santa Clara. He retired, then returned to become an investor and vice president of research for Xertex in Santa Clara.

An outdoorsman, Mr. Stephens enjoyed camping, taking care of the family cabin in the Santa Cruz mountains, and fishing at his house at Lake Almanor. He enjoyed gardening, working in his shop and fixing things around the house, say family members.

Mr. Stephens is survived by his son, Jack Stephens, of Pleasanton; and eight grandchildren. His wife, Kathryn, and his son, Thomas M. Stephens Jr., preceded him in death.

Services were held March 12 at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. Memorials in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 1 Almaden Blvd., Suite 500, San Jose, CA 95113. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Spangler Mortuaries.

Rachel Hines

Former Florida resident

Rachel Neighbor Hines of Menlo Park died March 5 at Stanford Medical Center. She was 88.
Ms. Hines was a longtime resident of Florida who recently moved to Menlo Park to be with her daughter, Sylvia K. Hines, executive director of the Support Network for Battered Women in Mountain View. She is also survived by her nephew, William Shiel of Akron, Ohio.

Services were held March 9 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Palo Alto. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Spangler Mortuaries.

Jeanne Polson

Community, school volunteer

Jeanne Evans Polson, a longtime resident of Portola Valley, died February 26 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was 84.
Ms. Polson was born in Bloomington, Indiana, and grew up in Palo Alto. She received a bachelor of arts degree with honors from Stanford University in 1942. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society.

During World War II, she volunteered to work for the Red Cross and was stationed in Tonopah, Nevada, where she met her future husband, Dr. Adam Borden Polson, a captain in the U.S. Air Force.

They were married in 1948 and lived in West Los Angeles, where Ms. Polson became the second president of the Junior Arts Council, which supported the arts and raised funds for the Los Angeles County Art Museum.

The family moved to Portola Valley in 1961. Ms. Polson was a member of the Conservation Committee for the town of Portola Valley and a president of the Portola Valley PTA.

She maintained interest in contemporary literature, as well as a passion for politics and current issues. She had a deep appreciation for the California landscape, gardens and the beauty in nature, say family members.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Adam Borden Polson, in September 2004. She is survived by her children, Janet Smith of Portola Valley and Adam Polson of San Jose; stepchildren Peter Polson of Boulder, Colorado, and Alex Polson of University Place, Washington; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Her family will celebrate her life at a gathering in Portola Valley in late spring, around the time of her birthday. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, 330 Distel Circle, Los Altos, CA 94022; or the donor's favorite charity.

Roosevelt Moore Jr.

Menlo Park resident

Friends are invited to attend funeral services for Roosevelt Moore Jr. at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at St. John Baptist Church, 1050 Bay Road in East Palo Alto. There will be a quiet hour from 7 to 8 p.m. on March 15 at the Chapel of Spangler Mortuary, 650 Live Oak Ave. in Menlo Park.
Mr. Moore, a resident of Menlo Park, died March 10 at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City. He was 62. Born in Duncan, Mississippi, he was employed as a machinist.

He is survived by his five children, Alphonso Moore, Karen Moore, and Michael Moore, all of Menlo Park, Silva Moore of Hayward, and Roosevelt Moore III of Modesto; his mother, Rosie Lee Moore; brothers Joseph, William, Charles and David Moore; sisters Mary Lee Blocker, Debra Crawford, Minnie Kroger, Dorothy Moore and Christine Redmon; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

His wife, Ernestine Moore, preceded him in death.

Arrangements were under the direction of Spangler Mortuaries.

Mary Ann Kaisel

A memorial service for Mary Ann Kaisel of Menlo Park will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Stanford Memorial Church. Ms. Kaisel died March 8 of pulmonary disease. She was 77.

Philip E. Gannon

Engineering executive

Philip E. Gannon Sr., who co-founded the architectural and engineering firm of Keller & Gannon in San Francisco in 1941, died April 17 at his Atherton home where he had lived for 52 years. He was 89.
Keller & Gannon, which he founded with longtime business partner George Keller, had projects throughout the United States and in numerous foreign countries. Mr. Gannon worked at the company until he retired in 1996 at the age of 80.

A native of Faribault, Minnesota, Mr. Gannon graduated from the University of Washington in 1938 with a degree in electrical engineering. He spent several years working for the U.S. Civil Engineers in the Pacific Northwest.

Throughout his career, Mr. Gannon remained active with the engineering community, authoring numerous technical articles, holding membership and serving in numerous capacities in engineering associations. He was past president of the San Francisco Bay Area Engineering Council and was featured in the 1978-79 edition of "Who's Who in the West."

In 1993 he started a foundation that provides scholarships to Bay Area college-bound students pursuing an engineering major.

Mr. Gannon had an avid interest in Porsches, which he drove since 1955. He was a devoted golfer and member of Sharon Heights Golf and County Club for 40 years, and he enjoyed gardening, swimming and traveling, say family members. He was a member of St. Denis Catholic Church for 42 years.

Mr. Gannon was the husband of the late Eloise Thomas Gannon. He is survived by his five children, Ann Arsenault Minnich of Penn Valley, Teresa Wright of Lodi, Maureen Riedy of San Anselmo, Tom Gannon of Novato and Philip Jr. of Atherton; 11 grandchildren; and members of the extended Thomas family in Ukiah.

A funeral Mass was held April 22 at St. Denis Catholic Church with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Menlo Park. Memorials in his name may be made to the Philip E. Gannon Sr. Scholarship Trust, c/o the San Francisco Foundation, Attn: Brent, 225 Bush St., San Francisco, CA 94104.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Redwood Chapel, Redwood City.

Clay S. Andrews

Teacher and administrator

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at St. Denis Church in Menlo Park for Clay S. Andrews of Menlo Park. Mr. Andrews died April 23 after a long illness. He was 83.
Friends may call at Crippen & Flynn Woodside Chapel, 400 Woodside Road, Redwood City, between 5 and 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 27.

Mr. Andrews was born and raised in San Francisco. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco, a master's degree from San Francisco State University, and a doctorate from Stanford University.

During World War II, he served as a U.S. Army medic in North Africa and Italy. He was a teacher and administrator at San Jose State University for nearly 40 years. In retirement, he was a volunteer at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Mr. Andrews is survived by his wife, Jane, and several nieces and nephews. The family prefers contributions be made to the Salvation Army.

interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.
