Catherine Lorentz

Menlo Park resident

Catherine F. "Cathy" Lorentz, a longtime resident of Menlo Park, died December 27. She was 82.

Ms. Lorentz is survived by her daughters, Claudette Galdes of Menlo Park and Michele Lorentz of San Jose; a sister, Mary Ann Rohling of Minnesota; and three grandchildren. Her husband, Clement J. Lorentz, preceded her in death.

A funeral Mass was held December 30 at St. Raymond Catholic Church; Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Spangler Mortuaries.

Jerome Rubin

Central Intelligence chief

Jerome William "Jerry" Rubin, a former chief of the San Francisco office of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), died December 1 in his Menlo Park home after a long illness. He was 86.

Mr. Rubin was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to California in 1938. During World War II, he attended the U.S. Army language program at Stanford University, where he studied Mandarin Chinese. He was then sent to Chunking, China, where he served in the U.S. Military Liaison Office. After the war, he returned to Stanford to graduate with his Class of 1943.

Mr. Rubin spent his entire career with the U.S. government, principally as a research analyst on China with the Department of Defense and the Central Intelligence Agency. He retired as chief of the San Francisco offices of the agency in 1974. In retirement, he was an active volunteer with the Palo Alto chapter of Recording for the Blind.

Mr. Rubin was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Beatrice, who died in 1968. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; sons Richard of Pasadena and Daniel of Redwood City; sister Patty Lamon of San Diego; and one grandson.

Mildred Lindsay]

Church soloist

Mildred Ellison Lindsay of Menlo Park died at home on December 15 at the age of 98.

Ms. Lindsay was born in Nephi, Utah. As a young woman, she worked for Crocker-Anglo Bank in San Francisco. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in the Primary (Children) Auxiliary and sang in the ward choirs. She was often asked to be a soloist at church and family functions.

Ms. Lindsay is survived by her three children, Marilyn Lindsay of Salt Lake City, Dean R. Lindsay of Cedar Hills, Utah, and Ronald K. Lindsay of San Carlos; 10 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren. Her husband of 73 years, Ray Lindsay, died in 2001.

Services have been held. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller Hapgood & Tinney of Palo Alto.

Jerry Boone

United Airline employee

Jerry R. Boone of Canton, Ohio, died unexpectedly at home on December 28. Mr. Boone, a resident of Menlo Park before moving to Canton two years ago, was 63.

Mr. Boone was born in Canton and graduated from Ohio State University in 1964. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Retired Officers Association. He worked for United Airlines for 35 years, retiring in 2003.

Mr. Boone was an avid outdoorsman, say family members.

He is survived by his children, Chase W. Boone of Mountain View, currently stationed in San Diego with the U.S. Marine Corp, and Jill R. Boone of Mountain View; brothers Charles Boone of Alliance, Ohio, Don Boone of Bremen, Ohio, and Lonie Boon of Canton; and sisters Nancy Peters and Lorie Miller, both of Canton.

Mary Louise Millard
'A lovely, gentle spirit'
Mary Louise Millard died August 15 at The Sequoias in Portola Valley after a long illness. She was 90.
Mrs. Millard was known as a bright, quiet lady who was married for 66 years to the Reverend -- later Right Reverend -- Richard Millard. They lived in locations ranging from Menlo Park to Paris. "She was a homebody," Bishop Millard recalls. "She loved to read. She would read Newsweek cover-to-cover."
Mary Louise Gessling was born in Hood River, Oregon, in 1915, and spent most of her childhood in Oakland. She attended the University of California at Berkeley where she graduated with a degree in French and mathematics, and became a teacher. She was Phi Beta Kappa and women's editor of the annual "Blue and Gold."
Louise met Dick Millard at the Episcopal club at Cal. "She was a generous, nice person," he recalls. "She never put you off by being smart."
The Millards didn't get married until 1939. In the interim, she taught French for two years in Watsonville, while he completed the seminary and served in a parish on Park Avenue in New York.
The young couple spent their first 10 years in Danbury, Connecticut, where they had three children while he was minister in a popular church in the industrial town well known for making hats. In 1950, they moved to Alameda where Mr. Millard was rector of Christ Church for 10 years.
In 1960, the Rev. Millard became a bishop and was appointed assisting bishop of the Diocese of California. Mrs. Millard spent the next 16 years managing various homes and participating in church activities in various places. Later, they spent two years in New York, and then two years in Paris when Bishop Millard became bishop for the American churches in Europe.
Mrs. Millard's time in France gave her a chance to use her French for the first time in 40 years, Bishop Millard recalls, and the French would compliment her. "It was just great for her," he says.
The Millards bought a fixer-upper in Menlo Park in 1970, and lived in it intermittently until 1991. Bishop Millard retired in 1980, and they moved to The Sequoias in 1991.
Neighbor and church friend Marjorie Bartlett, who also lives at The Sequoias, remembers Mrs. Millard fondly. "She was a lovely, gentle spirit with a laconic dry wit. She never disliked anybody," she says. "She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a quiet force in the church."
Mrs. Millard is survived by her husband; two children, Martha Millard Jones of Santa Cruz and Loubes in France and in a traveling houseboat; and Joseph Millard of Riverside; and three grandchildren. Another son, George, died in 2002.

Isak Hansen
Former real estate agent
Graveside services for Isak Hansen, a resident of Menlo Park for more than 30 years, were set for 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 30, at Holy Cross Cemetery in Menlo Park. Mr. Hansen died August 17 at age 79.
Born in Talvik, Norway, he later moved to Sweden, where he earned a degree in engineering. Mr. Hansen came to the United States in the 1960s and became an American citizen. He was a self-employed real estate agent.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, June Hansen; daughter Else Arntzen of Sweden; stepson Ed Imsland of Jackson; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roller Hapgood & Tinney.

Patricia Makay Mamalakis
Former Woodside resident
Patricia Makay Mamalakis, a former resident of Woodside and Portola Valley, died August 29 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she had lived for the past few years. She was 77.
Ms. Mamalakis was born in San Rafael and graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute and the College of Marin. She met and married Stelios Mamalakis (Stanley P. Makay) from Crete, Greece, who had established a law practice in San Francisco.
Ms Mamalakis became interested in Greek culture and encouraged a weaving revival in her husband's native village. She was also proud of her Scottish heritage and visited her father's homeland many times, say family members.
When living in Woodside Ms. Mamalakis established Art in Action at Woodside Elementary School and served as a volunteer for the Mentally Gifted Minor programs, say family members. She was a past president of Friends of the Woodside Library. Ms. Mamalakis attended the California School of Fine Arts and was an art instructor.
Ms. Mamalakis is survived by her children, Diana Mamalaki-Montoya of Santa Fe, and Allyn Kilcrease of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was set for 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe. Memorials in her name may be made to the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Education Department, attention: Joyce Begay-Foss, P.O. Box 2087, Santa Fe, NM 87504.

Barbara Borden
Community volunteer
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 24, at 3 p.m. at Christ Church in Portola Valley for Barbara Seal Borden, who died August 12 from complications of a stroke. She was 77.
Ms. Borden was born in Long Beach. She attended Mills College for two years and graduated from UCLA with a degree in elementary education. She taught in Long Beach and Piedmont.
In 1954 she married Thomas Winckler Borden. The following year they moved to Menlo Park, where they lived for the next 45 years.
Ms. Borden was a community volunteer who belonged to the Peninsula Volunteers Inc., Hillview School Parent Teacher Association, the Committee for Art at Stanford, and Friends of Filoli. She and her husband were members of the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton.
Friends were always important to Ms. Borden, say family members, especially following her stroke in 1998. In 2000 the Bordens moved to The Sequoias in Portola Valley, where she was cared for in the Health Center for five years.
In 2004 the Borden family gathered at Seascape near Santa Cruz to celebrate Barbara and Tom's 50th wedding anniversary.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Tom of Portola Valley; children Ann Bruhn of Portland, Oregon, John Borden of San Francisco, and Jim Borden of Hillsborough; brother Bill Seal of Long Beach; and six grandchildren.
The family prefers memorials in Ms. Borden's name to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, 770 Welch Road, Suite 150, Palo Alto, CA 94304 or a favorite charity.

David John Tully
Former Menlo School dean
David John Tully, who was academic dean of Menlo School from 1991 to 1996, died June 23 at his parents' home in Wales after an 11-month battle with leukemia. He was 50.
Mr. Tully was a former resident of Redwood City. In 1996 he became superintendent of Graded School in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and worked there until November 2004, when he traveled to the United States for medical treatment.
Mr. Tully is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their son, Gideon, of Carson City, Nevada; his former wife, Margie Tully, of Menlo Park, and their sons, Joshua, Samuel, Oliver and Dominic; and his parents, John and Betty Tully of Wales.
A memorial service will be held at Graded School, Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday, August 28.

Andrew Gonzales
Former chief petty officer
Andrew Ronald Gonzales of Menlo Park, who served as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy for 11 years, died August
2 in San Mateo Medical Center. He was 50.
Mr. Gonzales was a member of the American Legion, VFW Post 3982, Disabled American Veterans. He was a coin collector and loved going to the movies, say family members.
He is survived by daughter Brandi Gonzales of Fremont; sisters Carmen and Martha Gonzalez of Newark, New Jersey, and Mary Gonzalez of Bayonne, New Jersey; and brothers Gilbert Gonzalez of San Francisco, and Manuel Gonzales of Statesville, North Carolina.
A memorial service was held in the chapel of the Veterans Affairs hospital in Palo Alto. Donations may be made to the Firefighters Charitable Foundation, c/o Contribution Processing Center, P.O. Box 2689, Dale City, CA 94017.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Fremont Chapel of the Roses in Fremont.

Roswell O. Moore, former rector, Trinity Parish
A former rector of Trinity Parish in Menlo Park, The Rev. Canon Roswell O. Moore of Bend, Oregon, died August 10. He was 78.
He lived in Menlo Park from 1968 to 1994.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 9, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend, Oregon, where he was a member.
Born in Auburn, New York, he graduated from the Millbrook School in Millbrook, New York, in 1944. He earned a bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1948, a master's of divinity from Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1951, and a master of arts at Yale in 1954.
In 1982, he was installed as an honorary canon of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. He was awarded an honorary doctor of divinity by the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley in 1993.
Mr. Moore was ordained to the diaconate and the priesthood in the Episcopal Church in 1951 and served on the pastoral staff of Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York, and as program consultant for the Diocese of Central New York, where his book, "The Practice of Evangelism," was published.
He was rector of two parishes: Christ Church in Exeter, New Hampshire, and Trinity Parish in Menlo Park.
After his retirement from parish ministry, he served as president of the Episcopal Church Province of the Pacific from 1982 to 1988, bringing together all the Episcopal dioceses west of the Rocky Mountains and including Alaska, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands and Taiwan. He served on the Episcopal Church National Council from 1988 to 1994.
He went to Bend to serve as a volunteer for the Episcopal Church in eastern Oregon. He was active with the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers; Interfaith Ministries of Central Oregon; Parents, Friends of Lesbians and Gays of Central Oregon; and the Trinity Church Family Kitchen.
Survivors include his former spouse, Katharine; three sons, Tom, Andrew and Jonathan; a daughter, Mary; his spouse, Jan; one stepdaughter, Jill; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger.

Pete Chanteloup served Menlo fire district 30 years
A funeral service is set for Wednesday, August 24, at Church of the Nativity in Menlo Park for Peter J. "Pete" Chanteloup, who died unexpectedly August 19 while walking in San Carlos. Mr. Chanteloup, who retired in 1992 from the Menlo Park Fire Protection District, was 68, and resided in Palo Alto.
Mr. Chanteloup rose through the ranks to battalion chief during his 30 years with the fire district. His death was a shock to his "family" at the district -- former colleagues he still visited regularly.
The morning he died, "he came by Station 1 (headquarters on Middlefield Road) to visit me and the rest of the guys," said Mike Sweeney, Mr. Chanteloup's son-in-law and a captain with the Menlo Park fire district. "We shared some good laughs, then he left," Mr. Sweeney said.
He had gone to San Carlos, where he worked for a nonprofit organization that provides emergency training for public and private agencies. While Mr. Chanteloup was walking up the hill to reach his workplace, "someone saw him grab his chest" before he fell to the ground and died, Mr. Sweeney said.
Firefighting was in Mr. Chanteloup's blood. His late father, Noe, was fire chief of San Mateo, an uncle also retired from that department, his son-in-law said. "There's over 100 years (of firefighting history) in the family," said Mr. Sweeney, who has more than 20 years himself.
Born in San Mateo, Mr. Chanteloup served in the Marine Corps. He enjoyed spending time with family members at sporting events, school activities and on vacation, and his "beautiful garden is a tribute to the beautiful person he was," his family said.
Mr. Chanteloup is survived by his wife, Charlene; his daughters and sons-in-law Michele and Mike Sweeney and Patricia and Greg Royse; a sister, Janet Jones; and five grandchildren.
A rosary will be said on Tuesday, August 23, at 7 p.m., with visitation beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Church of the Nativity, 210 Oak Grove Ave. in Menlo Park.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. the next day at the church. interment will follow at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto.
The family prefers that donations be made to the Junipero Serra Athletic Fund, 451 W. 20th Ave., San Mateo, CA 94403.

Antonina Merlino
Menlo Park resident
Antonina Merlino, a resident of Menlo Park for 45 years, died at home July 1. She was 92.
Ms. Merlino, who was born in Belmont, Massachusetts, moved to Sicily with her family when she was a baby. As a young woman, she was married to Domenic Merlino in Sicily and returned to the United States with him and their children in 1950. The family lived in Waltham, Massachusetts, for 10 years before moving to Menlo Park in 1960.
Ms. Merlino loved gardening, crocheting, cooking and spending time with her close-knit family, say family members. She was a member of St. Raymond parish for 45 years.
She is survived by her children, Stephen Merlino and Concetta Pasqua, both of Menlo Park. Her husband Domenic and son Joseph preceded her in death.
Services were held July 7 at St. Raymond Church, with entombment at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto.

Kenneth B. Sorensen
Retired Menlo Park police officer
Kenneth B. Sorensen, who served as a Menlo Park police officer for 31 years, died May 12 in Carson City, Nevada.
Mr. Sorensen and his wife, Donna, moved to Carson City six years ago from Menlo Park. He was 66.
Mr. Sorensen was born in Englewood, New Jersey, and served in the U.S. Navy.
After retiring from the Menlo Park police force, Mr. Sorensen worked at Menlo Park Hardware and Guy's Plumbing and Heating.
Mr. Sorensen was known for telling jokes and, thanks to e-mail, friends in Menlo Park were able to share his humor, say family members.
While living in Carson City, he supervised 25 unpaid patrol officers who make up the Carson City sheriff's department volunteers in policing program.
"Ken was one of the most-liked volunteers that we have," said Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong. "Not only was he well liked, he was well respected throughout the department."
Mr. Sorensen is survived by his wife of 22 years, Donna Fallis Sorensen of Carson City; his children, Debby Embree of Yuba City, Steve Schaffner of Yuba City, Ray Sorensen of Rocklin, Sherry Larck of Modesto, Mike Sorensen of Castro Valley, and Larry Sorensen of Rocklin; stepdaughters Debbie Toscanelli of Palo Alto and Lisa Bates of Fullerton; sister Caroline Giambattista of New Jersey; and 12 grandchildren.
Services were held May 21 in Carson City. Memorials in his name may be sent to the Carson City sheriff's department volunteers in policing, c/o Lt. Ray Saylo, 901 E. Musser St., Carson City, NV 89701.

Arthur Bell
Printing executive
Arthur "Terry" Bell, a resident of Portola Valley for 17 years, died May 19 in Atascadero, where the family has a second residence. He was 62.
Born in Santa Monica, he grew up in Pacific Palisades and graduated from San Jose State University. He was a 27-year partner/vice president of ColorGraphics Inc., in San Francisco.
Mr. Bell was a member of several printing organizations, as well as the Northern California Golf Association and Atascadero Foursquare Church. He enjoyed travel, golf, hiking, boating and rafting, say family members.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda A. Bell; his children, Brendy Bell Alsup of Templeton and Jason W. Bell of Santa Maria; and four grandchildren.
Services were held May 23 at Atascadero Foursquare Church. Donations in his name may be made to Atascadero Foursquare Church, 2100 Ramona Road, Atascadero.

Johnnie Mae Nichols-Watson
Menlo Park resident
Services will be held Friday, May 27, for Johnnie Mae Nichols-Watson of Menlo Park, who died May 19. She was 76.
The services will start at 11 a.m. at Roller Hapgood & Tinney, 980 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26.
Ms. Nichols-Watson was born and educated in Texas. She was married to the late Isaac Watson and moved to California. She was a devout Christian and received many certificates and acknowledgements for her dedication and work in her church, say family members.
She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline Watson of Menlo Park; nieces Linda Hamilton of San Jose and Beverly Jones of Antioch; nephews Edward Johnson of Menlo Park, Kenneth Johnson of Sunnyvale and Jack Britton of San Francisco; and many great-nieces and nephews.

Lorna Loram
A memorial service will be held May 26 for Lorna Loram, a former longtime resident of Menlo Park and member of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. She died May 16 at the age of 63.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. at the memorial prayer chapel of the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center in the Santa Cruz mountains. The center is located at 37 Conference Drive in Mount Hermon.

James Thomas Morton
Former Portola Valley city attorney
James "Jim" Thomas Morton of Burlingame died June 24 at age 86. Mr. Morton served as town counsel for Portola Valley from 1964, when the town was incorporated, until he suffered a stroke in 1996.
Mr. Morton was a graduate of Stanford University and received his law degree from the University of San Francisco. He was a partner in the San Mateo law firm of Wilson, Jones, Morton & Lynch until his retirement.
He was devoted to his church, family, the education of Native Americans, Catholic Social Services and underprivileged youth, say family members.
Mr. Morton is survived by his sisters, Mary Morton Tuck and Ann Morton Worth.
A memorial service was held July 9 at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Burlingame. Donations may be made to a favorite charity in Mr. Morton's name. Arrangements were under the direction of Crosby-Gray & Co.
