Fredrick William Lucas
A private service will be held for Fredrick William Lucas, who died Friday at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. He was 51.
Mr. Lucas was born in Vallejo and called Santa Cruz home for the past 28 years.
Mr. Lucas was an exceptionally accomplished guitarist. First employed as an electronic engineer, he became a real estate agent before becoming a mortgage broker. His real estate career spanned more than 15 years.
He is survived by his mother, Bernice Turner of Fresno; sisters Kathy Staebler of Clovis and Carole Wing of Kingsburg; and many cousins and extended family.
After a private ceremony, Mr. Lucas will be buried at Mendocino Cemetery in Parlier. Arrangements were by Pacific Gardens Chapel in Santa Cruz. Contributions are preferred to the American Heart Association, Western States Affiliate, 1710 Gilbreth Road, Burlingame, CA 94010.

Maria Luisa Ponce
Services will be today and Wednesday for Maria Luisa Ponce, who died Saturday at home in Watsonville. She was 92.
Mrs. Ponce was born in Hidalgo, Mexico, and came to Watsonville from Brownsville, Texas, in 1965. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel Tabernacle of Watsonville.
She is survived by son Raul P. Juarez of Watsonville; daughters Delfina Marquez of Brownsville, Texas, Amada Marquez and Rosa De La Torre of Watsonville; Alicia Gomez of Long Beach and Carmel Ayala of Seattle; brothers Pablo and Procoro Ponce, both of Texas; sisters Leonor and Teresa Ponce, both of Texas; and 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville;
Services will be 7 p.m. today and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Davis Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Valley Public Cemetery.

Susan Jane Losey
Services will be held Saturday and Sunday for Susan Jane Losey, who died of cancer Aug. 14 in Santa Cruz. She was 36.
She is survived by daughter Jamie Lynn Page of Santa Cruz; parents Maryjane Holmes of Santa Rosa and Roger and Carol Losey of Eau Claire, Wis.; and numerous friends.
A celebration of her life will be at Stanislaus River Campground, Stanislaus National Forest, Saturday and Sunday. For directions or information, call 426-5646.
Arrangements are by the Santa Cruz Watsonville Cremation Service, 1048 Cayuga St. Santa Cruz.

Kerin ‘Kerry’ Sean Hughes
Services will be Sept. 7 for Kerin "Kerry" Sean Hughes, who died Aug. 9 in Santa Cruz. He was 43.
A native of Pontiac, Mich., Mr. Hughes grew up in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He had lived in Santa Cruz for four months when he died, but friends say he made close connections in that time.
He was loved music, and had been looking forward to attending this year’s Burning Man Festival. He loved playing his guitar on the beach, and driving his motorcycle.
He is survived by son Sean of New Hampshire; daughter Pam of New Hampshire; father Albert Hughes of Quincy, Mass.; brothers Kevin Hughes of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Keith Hughes of Stockton and Kris Hughes of Tamal; sisters Kimberly Gies of Los Gatos and Karen Hughes of Santa Cruz; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His mother, Katherine Hughes, and sisters Kendall Hughes and Kathleen Hughes, died before him.
An informal remembrance will be 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at Twin Lakes Beach, Santa Cruz. Please bring a beach chair.
Arrangements are by Santa Cruz Memorial Park Funeral Home.

Bonnie Irene Maietta
Services will be Thursday for Bonnie Irene Maietta, who died June 29 at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. She was 80.
A native of Crescent City, Mrs. Maietta had lived in Santa Cruz off and on since 1953. She spent the last few years at La Posada in Santa Cruz.
She graduated from Del Norte High School in Crescent City.
She is survived by sons Dennis Patterson of Brookdale and Mark Maietta of Crescent City.
Services will be 2-3 p.m. Thursday at La Posada, 609 Frederick St., Santa Cruz.

Shirley Velasquez
Services will be Friday for Shirley Velasquez, who died Saturday in Aromas. She was 66.
She was born in Santa Cruz, and had lived in the area her entire life, most recently in Aromas.
She enjoyed gardening and the family pets.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Barney Velasquez of Aromas; children Barney Jr., Donald, Kathy, Kim, Kevin, Gene and Grant Velasquez of Aromas, and Robin Velasquez of Canoga Park; sisters Betty Holder of Arizona and JoAnne McGee of South Carolina; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Parents Patricia and Virgil Cloud and sons Richard and Ernie died before her.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Aromas Bible Church, 263 Carpetera, Aromas. Burial will be at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.
Davis Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Aliene Margaret Drews
Services will be Thursday for Aliene Margaret (Odegaard) Drews, who died Friday. She was 60.
She was born in Billings, Mont., and had lived in Santa Cruz.
Her lifelong commitment to the Christian faith started with her baptism on Nov. 2, 1943, at American Lutheran Church in Billings. She earned a bachelor’s degree at the California Lutheran University and a lifetime secondary teaching credential.
She held various teaching positions throughout her life, the last in the Live Oak School District.
She lived in several communities in California, before settling in Santa Cruz. She was active in the life of the parishes where she resided.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Edward R. Drews of Santa Cruz; mother Audrey Odegaard of Billings; brothers Leon Odegaard of Billings, John Odegaard of Laguna Beach and Paul Odegaard of Stephensville, Mont.; and six nieces and two nephews.
Her father, Wesley Odegaard, died before her.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 2500 Soquel Drive, Santa Cruz. Graveside services will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park.
Oakwood Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established in her name at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 2500 Soquel Drive, Santa Cruz, CA 95062.

Lanette Valdez
Services will be Friday for Lanette Valdez, who died Monday at UC San Francisco Medical Center after a long illness. She was 24.
She was born in Santa Cruz, and lived in Watsonville for many years. After eight years in Hollister, she returned to Watsonville last year.
She graduated from San Andreas High School in Hollister, and worked at Target in that city.
She was a fan of the Oakland Raiders, and was involved in Aztec dancing. She also enjoyed cooking and baking.
She is survived by husband Diego Valdez of Watsonville; son Diego Gilbert Valdez of Watsonville; brother Charles Tumbaga of Salinas; sister Monica Riojas of Morgan Hill; parents Gilbert and Nena Sanchez of Hollister; and grandparents Paul and Esperanza Riojas of Watsonville.
A rosary service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Valley Catholic Church, 2401 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 Friday at Valley Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Valley Public Cemetery.
Mehl’s Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Ezperanza R. Rangel
Services will be private for Ezperanza Romero Rangel, who died Aug. 13 at Watsonville Community Hospital after a long illness. She was 34.
She was born in Morelia, Mexico, and lived in Watsonville.
She also was known as Gloria Ramirez.
Davis Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
