Margaret Brown Powley
No services are planned for Margaret Brown Powley, who died Tuesday. She was 91.
Mrs. Powley, or "Buddy," as her friends called her, was born in Oakmond, Penn., and lived there most of her life.
She and her husband, David, moved to Santa Cruz in 1990 to be closer to their daughters.
Mrs. Powley worked as a librarian in the Carnegie Library in Oakmond for many years before moving to Marlton, N.J., after retirement. She and her husband spent the best 10 years of their lives there, family members said.
Mrs. Powley enjoyed painting and birdwatching.
She is survived by daughters Alice Vandergrift of Santa Cruz and Dinah Abbott of Aptos; a sister, Jane Dinker of Atlanta; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; two nieces; and one cousin.
Her husband of 58 years, David Powley, died in 1996.
Contributions are preferred to Heartland Hospice, 2511 Garden Road, Suite B-200, Monterey, CA 93940.

Winslow ‘Win’ Robert Park
At his request, no services will be held for Winslow "Win" Robert Park who died Sunday at Sun Bridge Care Center in Watsonville. Mr. Park had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 80.
Mr. Park was born in Hulett, Wyo., and grew up in Fort Plains, N.Y. He moved to Scotts Valley 13 years ago.
He attended Eastman School of Music for three years before enlisting in the Army Air Force where he served three years in the Pacific during World War II.
After the war, Mr. Park earned a business degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind., where he also met his bride-to-be.
The couple moved to Sunnyvale, where he worked as a production manager for Westinghouse, raised a family of five and retired after 35 years.
He then taught for two years at San Jose State and moved to Scotts Valley.
Mr. Park was an avid musician and tennis player and a member of SIRS. He directed many church choirs and also started and directed the first choir in Montevalle in Scotts Valley for four years.
He was instrumental in getting Scotts Valley to build its first tennis courts.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Park, now of Graham, Wash.; daughters Barbara Delaney of Campo, Linda Burroughs of Santa Cruz and Rebecca Park of Campbell; sons Robert Park of Graham, Wash., and Paul Park of Puyallup, Wash.; and several grandchildren.
Contributions are preferred to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.

Waltha Moya Burton
Services will be Tuesday for Waltha Moya Burton, who died Tuesday at Watsonville Community Hospital. She was 86.
Mrs. Burton was born in Mountain Grove, Mo., and lived in the Castroville area for 40 years.
She owned and operated an antique store in Moss Landing, Waltha’s Place, for 12 years and worked for Avon for 22 years.
Mrs. Burton was a member of the Moss Landing Chamber of Commerce and the American Business Women’s Association.
She is survived by sons Phillip D. Burton of Moss Landing and William R. Burton of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Onieta Loveland of Springfield, Mo.; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Her husband, William E. Burton, died in 1988.
Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.
Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel.

Steve Pemberton
Services will be private for Steve Pemberton, who died Thursday in Santa Cruz. He was 50.
Mr. Pemberton was born in Glendale. He was a longtime resident of Santa Cruz and raised his children here.
Mr. Pemberton worked as an inventory manager for Tandem Computers for more than 15 years before he suffered a stroke.
He loved being outdoors, particularly camping out.
He is survived by a daughter, Dawn Pemberton of Santa Cruz; a son, Robert Pemberton of Sacramento; brothers Lloyd Pemberton of Morro Bay and Mike Pemberton of Costa Mesa; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.

Warren Thornhill
Services will be Wednesday for Warren Thornhill, who died Friday in his Santa Cruz home of brain cancer. He was 61.
Mr. Thornhill was born in Warren, Ohio, and moved to Oakland in 1949 and to Santa Cruz in 1968.
He earned a bachelor’s degree and teaching credential from San Francisco State University and a master’s degree and education credential from San Jose State University.
Mr. Thornhill taught in the Pajaro Valley School District from 1968 to 1993, at Hall District and Calabasas elementary schools, and served as principal of Calabasas Elementary School from 1994 to February 2002.
Family members say he was most proud of working with the Calabasas School staff, which was as close as a family.
Mr. Thornhill was named in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1996, and was a judge for the state History Day and National Geography Bee and a regional director of the California Association of Year Round Education.
He was a member of the Association of California School Administrators and the National Council of History Education.
Mr. Thornhill attended Santa Cruz Bible Church and enjoyed reading, history, traveling and attending Giants games.
He is survived his wife of 33 years, Jackie Thornhill of Santa Cruz; and sons Paul Thornhill of Santa Cruz and Jeff Thornhill of New York City.
Services will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Cruz Memorial Park, 1927 Ocean St.

Mercedes Gomez
Services will be Wednesday for Mercedes Gomez, who died Wednesday in Santa Cruz. She was 78.
Mrs. Gomez was born in San Francisco and lived in Santa Cruz since 1986.
She worked as an usher at the Fox Theatre in San Francisco and as a secretary and business agent for the Teamsters union for 20 years.
She was a member of the Teamsters and the California Grey Bears.
Mrs. Gomez was a great tennis player in her younger years, family members say, and was a longtime San Francisco 49ers fan who loved playing cards, movies and opera.
She is survived by sons Del Anthony Gomez of Tracy and Michael Joseph Gomez of Santa Cruz; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters; and one brother.
Her infant son, Wayne Gomez, died in 1944, her sons, Mark Anthony and Joseph Anthony Gomez, died in 1999, and her husband, Joseph Anthony Gomez Sr. died in 1977.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Memorial Park Crystal Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road. The Rev. Mark Stetz of Holy Cross Church will officiate.
A reception will follow at the DeAnza Park Clubhouse, 2395 Delaware Ave., Santa Cruz.

Vernon A. Prescott
Services will be later in Chicago for Vernon A. Prescott, who died Wednesday in his Aptos home. He was 84.
Mr. Prescott was born and raised in Chicago and lived in the Santa Cruz area for the past 15 years.
He served in the European Theater with the Army infantry during World War II.
Mr. Prescott retired as publisher and editor of Peacock Business Press after a 50-year career in business journalism.
He was an avid golfer and a talented piano player who especially loved playing hymns.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Eva Prescott of Aptos; daughters Ellen Disch of Missouri, Ann Rose of Sunnyvale, Nancy Shibata of Fremont and Barbara Miller of Aptos; sons James VanBuren of Illinois, Jeffrey VanBuren of Arizona and George VanBuren of Hawaii; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
His wife Doris Nevin Prescott, and a son, Steven Prescott, died before him.
Mr. Prescott will be buried at Union Ridge Cemetery in Chicago.
Arrangements are by Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.
