Dorothy Knickerbocker
Dorothy Knickerbocker died on Jan. 8, 1999, at the age of 90 at Pioneer House in Sacramento, where she had been a resident since 1991.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1908, in Henrietta, Texas, the daughter of C.B. and Florence McDonald. At 16, she left home for college in Georgia. After two years there, she taught violin at Texas Tech, and at age 19 married Kenneth Knickerbocker.
Together, the couple headed for Yale where she studied violin and he English literature. Following their years at Yale, Dorothy joined the orchestra at Kingston, R.I., as first violinist. Kenneth assumed his first post at professor of English at Rhode Island State College.
In 1946, they moved to Knoxville, Tenn. There she joined the Knoxville Symphony, where she performed as first violinist for the next 16 years. He continued his academic career at the University of Tennessee, concluding as Vice President for Academic Affairs for the Tennessee system. Together, they called Knoxville home for 43 years until their move to Davis in 1989.
Throughout her adult life, Dorothy was her own woman, fiercely independent and a perfectionist as musician and seamstress extraordinaire. She prided herself on her practicality and frugality, and to those who knew her, she was forever feisty, funny, energetic and opinionated.
With her husband, she shared a consummate love for fine food, theater, travel, spectator sports, good conversation, good friends and Republican politics.
She and her husband had two children, Bob Knickerbocker of Dallas and Alzada Forbes of Davis. They survive her, as do her two grandchildren, Dana Knickerbocker, 25, and Alex Forbes, 23.
She is also survived by her twin sister, Doris Stone of Colorado Springs, as well as 11 nieces and nephews and their families and the families of four nieces and nephews who are deceased.
A private family service will be held in her loving memory on Friday, Jan. 29, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Davis.
Marie A. Scott
Marie A. Scott died on Jan. 14, 1999. Born on Sept. 1, 1922, in Chicago Heights, Ill., she was 76.
She grew up in Chicago Heights and attended the University of MIchigan Nursing Program.
She enjoyed playing bridge and was very devoted to her children and grandchildren, family members said.
She was a resident of Davis for the past eight years. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Woodland and St. Raphael Church in Crystal, Minn. She spent much of her time traveling between Davis and Plymouth, Minn., to be near her children.
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Hansen of Ridgecrest, Laurie Huber of Plymouth, Minn., and Debra Hartnett of Davis. She also leaves seven grandchildren.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 1 p.m. today at Holy Rosary Church in Woodland. interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel of Davis.
Vernon S. Dallman Jr.
Vernon Salig Dallman Jr. died on Jan. 16, 1999, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He was 70.
He was born in Sacramento on Aug. 7, 1928, to Vernon and Etta Dallman, who preceeded him in death.
A Yolo County resident for 10 years, he was a real estate investor for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Dallman of Esparto; his son, David Dallman of Santa Rosa, a pilot; his daughter, Diana Silva of Benicia and her husband Michael; his sister, Elaine Dallman of San Francisco; and his three grandchildren, Daniel Silva, Katie Marie Silva and Gregory Silva, all of Benicia.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McNary's Chapel in Woodland.

Wendell A. Glick
Wendell A. Glick died on Jan. 21, 1999, at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis. Born on Feb. 24, 1908, in Columbus, Ohio, he was 90 years old.
A 1929 graduate of Ohio State University, he worked as a ceramic engineer for more than 46 years.
He moved to Covell Gardens in Davis from Whittier in 1991.
He was an avid bowler and Ohio State Buckeye fan. He enjoyed growing tomatoes and watching his grandchildren play soccer and other sports, family members said. He would rearrange his schedule so as to not miss an Ohio State football game.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Glick, in 1989; his brother, Theodore Glick; and his sister, Kathryn Glick.
He is survived by his two children, Neil Glick of Davis and his wife, Lorraine Barr, and Nancy Ryan of Lee, N.H., and her husband, Jim; his sister, Alice Glick of Columbus, Ohio; and his two grandchildren, Evan Glick and Kyle Glick, both of Davis.
Friends may call Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. in Davis. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton.
Remembrances may be made in his name to the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition, 18 Belle Lane, Lee, Ohio 03824; or to the Leukemia Society of America, 3105 Fite Circle, Sacramento.

Molly Alden
Davis resident Molly Alden, 48, died unexpectedly in her sleep early on Jan. 8, 1999. She was the mother of two children, was active in numerous civic activities and worked as a deputy attorney general in Sacramento.
She was born on Dec. 22, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale in 1968, and received a bachelor's degree in art history from Cowell College, UC Santa Cruz, in 1972. She attended Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley, receiving her J.D. in 1975.
Her first job as a lawyer was in the Fresno County public defender's office from 1976 to 1978. She then worked as a deputy federal defender for the U.S. District Court in Fresno from 1978 to 1979. She clerked for the Hon. Raul A. Ramirez in Sacramento from 1980 to 1984. In 1985, she joined the staff of the California Attorney General's office, where she worked in the anti-trust section.
She was active in many civic and professional organizations. She served as a board member of California Women Lawyers in that groups's formative years; she was active in Special Care Parents, a support group for parents of premature infants; and was a member of the Sacramento Bioethics Forum. She participated in many school and youth-group activities, and every Election Day served as a poll worker at her home precinct in Davis.
She is survived by her husband, Craig Thompson of Davis; her daughter, Julia Rose Thompson of Davis, 12; her son, Christopher Thompson of Davis, 5; her sister, Darita-Rose Pendragon of Glendale; and her four brothers, Richard Alden of Monroe, Wash., James Alden of Sacramento, Thomas Alden of San Marcos, Texas, and Phillip Alden of Foster City. She is also survived by her two nephews, Damien Bradley of Glendale and Hollis Alden of San Marcos, Texas; and her niece, Reeva Bradley of Glendale. There are also numerous cousins, aunts and uncles, most of whom live in the Midwest.
A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Davis. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. A reception will follow at the Veterans' Memorial Center, across the street from the church.
interment will be private at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto.

Clara Zito
Clara Zito died on Jan. 10, 1999. Born on Sept. 16, 1902, in New York City, she was 96.
She resided in Yonkers, N.Y., for many years where she worked in the garment industry. She retired after a 28-year career with the Dolly Dress Factory. She has been a resident of Davis for the past 17 years.
She was preceded in death on Sept. 18, 1981, by her husband of 60 years, Christopher Zito.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marie Carneiro of Davis and Josephine O'Neill of Yonkers, N.Y.; and her son, Frank Zito of Bridgewater, N.J. She also leaves eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, 14th and B streets in Davis. Burial will take place at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, N.Y.
Remembrances may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Harold O. Edwards
On the eve of his 94th birthday, Harold O. Edwards died on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, at Aldersons Convalescent Hospital in Woodland. He was a 50-year resident.
Born in Clarinda, Iowa, on Jan. 16, 1905, the son of Evan and Amanda Edwards, who were Iowa Farmers. He was educated in Red Oak, Iowa.
As a young man, he pursued work with major oil and geographical companies, so he traveled throughout many states. He was employed by Superior Oil Company and Texas, Inc. for several years followed by the Robert H. Roy Company of Houston, Texas.
While in Washington and Oregon, he met his wife, Clarice, and they were married in Salem, Oregon on June 1, 1946, in the First Presbyterian Church by Dr. Hamblin, who came to Woodland in 1967. He met Dr. Hamblin in 1950 when he was transferred to Woodland.
He was last employed by Yolo County in Public Works Department and retired in 1970 after 15 years.
He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Retired Public Employees Association, The Woodland Senior Center, A charter member of Mr. and Mrs. Dance Club, A boat club and the Davis Golf Center. He assisted with the building of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2345 Hall in the 1960s and has been a member of the same for 33 years.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Pedersen; and eight younger brothers, LeRoy, James, Dean, Vernon, Irvin, Delvert, Richard and Arnold.
He is survived by a sister, Lou Milner of Atlantic, Iowa; his youngest brother, Evan Edwards Jr. of Woodland; and several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. by the Woodland Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2345 at McNary's Chapel. interment will be private.

Eulaille G. Bonnifield
Eulaille Grace Bonnifield died at Courtyard Health Care in Davis on Jan. 11, 1999. Born on April 25, 1905, in Arkansas, she was 93.
She worked as a psychiatric technician for the Eldridge State Hospital in Sonoma for over 25 years. She was a resident of Sonoma from 1947 to 1991. In 1991, she moved to Davis to be near her daughter. She has resided in Davis for the past 7 years.
She enjoyed reading and crochet, family members said.
She was preceded by her husband, Harry Bonnifield in June 1990.
She is survived by her four children, Vanita Smoley of Davis, Jerry Winchester of Clear Lake Oaks, Peggy Whitman of San Jose, and Bill Winchester of West Sacramento. She also leaves her brother, A.D. Whiteaker of Ukiah, six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at Santa Rosa Memorial Park in Santa Rosa. Remembrances may be made in her name to the Arthritis Foundation.

Clarence G. Kimura
Born on July 13, 1914, in Walnut Grove, Clarence Gensei Kimura died on Jan. 9, 1999, at the age of 84.
A longtime resident of Woodland, he was a retired farmer and an avid golfer.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hazel; his brother, John, and sister, Kuniko.
He is survived by his two sons, John Kimura and his wife, Linda, and Keith Kimura and his wife, Lorene; and his grandchildren, J, Dustin and Zachary, all of Woodland.
A private service was held on Jan. 13 in Woodland.

Virginia Micke
Virginia Micke died on Jan. 13, 1999, at Woodland Memorial Hospital, the result of a stroke suffered the previous day. She was 91.
She was born in Ferndale in 1907 to Joseph and Olympia Benamati. She lived in Italy, Willows and Vina before settling in Los Molinos, where she resided for over 50 years. She moved to Woodland in 1993.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Clem Micke, who died in 1997. The couple were farmers who grew almonds, apricots, prunes and walnuts before moving to Woodland.
The joy of her life was her grandchildren and great grandchildren, family members said.
She is survived by her son, Warren of Davis and his wife, Louise; her granddaughter, Catherine Pereira of Hinesville, Ga., and her husband, Jose; her grandson, Stephen Micke of Davis and his wife, Ona; and her great granddaughters, Briana Pereira of Hinesville, Ga., and Jordyn Micke of Davis. She is also survived by a sister, Olympia Cammack of Oroville, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church and a memorial Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. James. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.

Siami Clemens
Siami Clemens died on Dec. 20, 1998, at Sierra Health Care in Davis. She was 88.
She was born on Dec. 11, 1910, in Bisbee, Ariz. Her parents, Christopher and Justina Heikkinen, were immigrants from Finland. She came from a large family of six sisters and five brothers.
She moved to San Francisco in her early teens and, in her late 20s, she married Earle N. Clemens.
At the age of 55, she committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. She has resided in Davis for the past 20 years, 15 of which were spent at Sierra Health Care.
Her three children, Gloria Huffman of Washington, Senia Wade of Washington and David Clemens of Davis survive her. She also leaves nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Her family describes her as a dedicated mother and beloved friend in the community and her church.
Her family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Grace Valley Christian Center for their faithful ministry to her over the years. They also send their thanks to the staff of Sierra Health Care who provided her with excellent care for the past 15 years.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Grace Valley Christian Center in Davis. interment will be private at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

Helen Scimens
A memorial service for Helen Scimens will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at the Unitarian Church of Davis. Friends and family are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of America or the Family Caregiver Alliance in the donor's community.
Dorothy E. Beadle
Dorothy Elizabeth Beadle died unexpectedly on Jan. 3, 1999, of a cerebral hemorrhage at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento. She was 69.
She was born on Jan. 10, 1929, in Patterson, N.J., and was educated in New Jersey schools. She also attended The Packard School in New York City.
She married Charles Beadle in Wyckoff, N.J., in 1956 and moved to Davis in 1961. For many years, she was an editor in the wildlife, fish and conservation biology department at UC Davis.
An avid hiker, she was a lifelong member of the Green Mountain Club and had a strong interest in nature conservaton.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Beadle of Davis; her two sons, Steven Beadle of Whittier and Gordon Beadle of Cambridge, Mass.; her daughter, Sara Reed of Broomfield, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
She also leaves her twin sisters, Rose Milstein of Wyckoff, N.J., and Evelyn Walsh of New York City.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Davis Community Church, 412 C St.

Richard D. Jones
Richard Dyer Jones died of cancer in his Woodland home on Jan. 1, 1999. He was 78.
He was born in Woodland where he lived most of his life except for a few years in Berkeley. He graduated from Woodland High School and is an alumnus of UC Davis.
He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. After the war, he farmed in the Sutter Basin for 40 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Rice Growers Association and the Sutter Basin Growers Co-op and served as a board member of the Sutter Mutual Water Co. He was a 50-year member of the Elks and a 50-year member and past president of the Yolo Fliers Club.
According to his family, Jones was an avid hunter and fisherman, but his greatest love, after his family, was golf. He won many tournaments, including the Yolo Fliers Club championship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and Richard D. Jones Sr.; his sister, Barbara Amonette; and his wife of 17 years, Rose Richter Jones.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara (Bobbie); his daughters, Elizabeth Riehl of Larkin Valley and her husband Marc, and Suzanne Jones of Ketchum, Idaho; his stepdaughter, Kathi Thiel of Fremont and her husband Robert; his stepson, Bill Anton of Fremont and his wife Cres; his granddaughter, Laura Rose Riehl; his stepgrandson, Jason Dozier; a beloved family friend, Kathleen Meek of Santa Rosa; and his cousin, Bernice Best of Woodland.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 515 Second St. in Woodland.
The family requests that memorial gifts be sent to Yolo Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice.
Ella M. Haden
Ella May Haden died at St. Claire's Convalescent Facility in Sacramento on Jan. 1, 1998, at the age of 85.
She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Aug. 20, 1913, to John and Emma Semler, who preceded her in death.
She was a resident of Yolo County for 18 years.
A cook for 20 years, she last worked at the Alpine Conference Center. She was a member of the Esparto Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Presbyterian Churches, both in Esparto and Woodland.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph Haden of Woodland; her two daughters, Carol Brown of Woodland and her husband Cliff, and Nancy Wimp of Marrianna, Fla., and her husband George; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Joseph Lee Haden of Decatur, Ala., and his wife Tammy.
A funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at McNary's Chapel. Burial will be private.
