L. Wade Bird

L. Wade Bird of Vallejo died Jan. 27, 2002, in Norwood Pines Convalescent Facility in Sacramento. He was 88.

A Willows native, he was born May 18, 1913. He lived in Yolo County for 20 years before moving to Solano County in 1943. He graduated from Woodland High School in 1931. He was a captain for the Vallejo Police Department, where he worked for 31 years before retiring. He was a member of the Vallejo Police Department Pistol Team and received numerous medals.

He was a 54-year member of the Naval Masonic Lodge # 87 F&AM in Vallejo, as well as a member of the Silverstar Order of Eastern Star Chapter 3 and of First Methodist Church in Vallejo. He also was a member of the Retired Public Employees Association and the Vallejo Police and Fireman's Widows and Orphans Association.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Harriette Bird of Vallejo; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherrill Anne and Stephen Wheeler of Sacramento; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven Wade and Carol Bird of Saratoga; one brother and sister-in-law, Howell and Laverl Bird of Sacramento; one brother-in-law and his wife, Dan and Lu Milligan of Woodland; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Kerri and Scott Pullen of Elk Grove; one great-granddaughter, Laura Pullen of Elk Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service was held at Woodland Cemetery.

Thomas W. Allard

Thomas Wilson Allard, of Bend, Ore., died of lung cancer Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home. He was 50 years old.

Born and raised in Davis, Allard lived a rich and complex life. He earned a bachelor of science in agriculture, a master of science in international agricultural development and eventually a teaching credential in special education. He joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to Thailand, accepted an international agricultural assignment in Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and traveled widely and adventurously.

At various points in his life, he was an agricultural adviser, taught junior high school, did special education student assessments, ran house-painting and car-painting businesses and was a ski instructor. He loved to read, travel, ski and eat good meals.

His special gift was his intelligence, which manifested itself especially in a wicked sense of humor. Adults and children alike appreciated his often-hilarious insights into the nature of the "common man," expressed through parables of his life experiences, stories, jokes, ditties and tall tales.

Allard was especially enamored with his nieces and nephews, the newest of which, Emma (recently adopted by his sister Gillian from Khazakstan) and Lukas (newborn son of his sister Stacie), whom he did not have the opportunity to meet.

He is survived by his parents, Bob and Ann Allard, his sisters, Susan, Jane, Gillian and Stacie and seven nieces and nephews.

Charles G. Zimmerli

Charles G. Zimmerli of Woodland died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at the Aldersons Convalescent Facility. He was 84.

Zimmerli was born in Woodland Aug. 16, 1917, to the late Gottlieb and Elise Zimmerli. He was a farmer on the same farm on which he was born and raised. He attended Willow Oak Grammar School and Woodland High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving from 1941 to 1945. He served in the Asiatic Pacific theater in 1942.

Zimmerli was a volunteer with the Willow Oak Fire Department for 35 years and was a 50-year member of the Woodland Elks Lodge #1299 B.P.O.E. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Helen Zimmerli, of Woodland. He is also survived by his children, Charlene Kimbrell of Choctaw, Okla., Kathy Zimmerli of Granite Bay, Terry Maine of Choctaw, Okla., and Greg Hornbuckle of Bakersfield; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Hickey of Woodland, and a brother, John Zimmerli of Sacramento. He was preceded in death by his infant son Zimmerli, in 1957.

A private graveside service was held at Monument Hill.

The family would prefer memorials be directed to the Willow Oak Fire Department or the Alzheimer's Aid Society of Northern California, 2717 Cottage Way, Suite 3, Sacramento, CA, 95825.

Clyde Erwin Sinclair

Clyde Erwin Sinclair of Woodland died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He was 87.

Sinclair was born Nov. 19, 1914, in Jennylind. He was a resident of Yolo County for 55 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was a captain in the California Highway Patrol, retiring in 1974 after 27 years of service. Sinclair was a member of the Rotary Club of Woodland, the Woodland Masonic Lodge #81 F&A.M., the Ben Ali Shrine of Sacramento and the Woodland Elks Lodge #1299. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He and his wife loved to travel. They would have celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this April.

Sinclair is survived by his wife, Dorothy Sinclair, of Woodland; his children, Michael Fratis and wife Carmel, and Kathleen Norvell and husband David, all of Santa Cruz; his grandchildren, Chris Scarbrough, Aaron Fratis and Jenna and Jonathan Norvell; great grandson Matthew Scarbrough, and two nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Second and Lincoln streets, Woodland.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice. McNary's Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Manuel T. Sandoval

Manuel T. Sandoval died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Kaiser Hospital in Roseville. Born in Los Angeles on Dec. 25, 1923, to the late Casmino and Ignacio Sandoval, he was 78.

Sandoval was a resident of Yolo County for 57 years. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, from 1942 to 1946, serving both in the Hawaiian Islands and the Midway Islands. He was a machinist for 30 years and worked for Dos Rios Farms. Sandoval was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Marine Corps League.

He is survived by his wife, Martina Sandoval, of Woodland; daughters Eleanor Sandoval and Ann Sandoval, both of Woodland; grandchildren Brian Gersalia, Rosalio Altamirano, Tina Altamirano and Manuel Altamirano; great grandsons Manuel Altamirano Jr. and Exaviar Altamirano, all of Woodland.

A vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Holy Rosary Church in Woodland. The funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Rosary Church with internment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Eve J. Bell

Eve J. Bell died Feb. 1, 2002, in Davis at the age of 80. She was born in Skien, Norway, on Dec. 21, 1921, and was known throughout her life as a feisty, hard-working and independent spirit in a diminutive body.

At the age of 8, she traveled with her family from Norway to Iron River in Upper MIchigan. She married David A. Kennedy just after World War II, beginning a long series of travels as a Marine Corps wife. She loved moving to new places, living in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Carolina, returning several times to Camp Pendleton in California, and finally settling in California for good in the 1960s.

She worked as a senior buyer for Ampex Corp.'s computer products division, a job she truly loved. At Ampex, she met her second husband, Gerald Bell, who died in 1976. Eve was a prodigiously hard worker; when she retired in 1988, she left a vacancy at Ampex that had to be filled by four people.

In 1989, she moved to Northern California to be near her family. She was a volunteer in Vacaville for Meals on Wheels and then for SHARE.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald Bell, and siblings Eleanor, Marian, Lillian and Gilbert.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Kennedy and son-in-law Andrew Lang of Davis, her son David Kennedy of Grass Valley, daughter Carol Kennedy of Merrillville, Ind., her sister Evelyn Hagen of Milwaukee, grandchildren Eden Kennedy-Hoffmann, Tiffiny Stengel and J.R Stengel, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Davis Lutheran Church, with visitation today at 4 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel.

Donations in her memory may be made to Lutheran Social Services of Northern California, 433 Hegenberger Road, Suite 103, Oakland, CA 94621, in support of their work with the homeless.

Dolores M. Long

Dolores May Long of Woodland died in Woodland Jan. 28, 2002, of a lengthy illness and diabetes. She was 72.

She was born in Woodland on May 8, 1929, and attended Woodland elementary schools and Woodland High School. She studied piano for 10 years and was a member of Rainbow Girls and the Junior Chamber of Commerce. She was a stage hand for school plays, a member of Hi-Y and an officer for the Ilex staff.

She attended Sacramento City College, UC Berkeley and Chico State College, where she earned her degree. She taught in Dunnigan and Davis, as well as for 27 years at Woodland's Beamer, Dingle and Freeman elementary schools.

She married Ted Neal Long in 1952, and they lived near Zamora, where he was a farmer and sheep rancher. She enjoyed reading, listening to music, sewing, knitting and playing cards. She and her husband were longtime members of a Zamora potluck group, and she was a 4-H cooking leader.

After her retirement, she and her husband attended antique shows; she also traveled with the Pedro Bus group to Reno. She had a dry sense of humor.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Sandra and Tony Montero, Alex and Marlene Long and Chris and Sally Long; her grandchildren, Brooke and Nick Montero, Sterling, Paul and Alexis Long and Heather and Erin Long; one sister-in-law; a niece and nephews; and cousins and friends from Woodland and Zamora.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Jennie Harding; and her husband, who died Feb. 28, 2001.

No services are scheduled. Cremains will be buried icon privately.

Memorials may be directed to Mary's Cemetery, c/o 920 Harvard Place in Woodland; or to charities of the donors' choice.

Ethel W.H. Oeste

Ethel Wildah Heidrick Oeste died Feb. 4, 2001, in Boise, Idaho, where she was visiting her daughter. Born April 9, 1914, to Andrew A. and Wildah De Harrison Heidrick in Artois, she was 86.

She moved with her family to Woodland when she was still a young girl. As the oldest daughter in the family, she was always very helpful to her mother. She woke up at 4:30 in the morning to pick blackberries while the day was still cool. Later in the day she would help her mother cook and prepare blackberry dumplings for dinner. Often she stayed home from school to help her mother with household chores and to help care for her younger brother and sister.

As a young woman, she worked for several years at Timothy's Bakery on Main Street in Woodland. On March 20, 1938, she married Laverne Adolph Oeste in Reno, Nev. The couple had two daughters, Sharon and Sharlene Oeste. In 1946 the family built a home in Davis, where they lived until 1972 when their home was dismantled to make room for a freeway.

She prided herself on her homemaking skills, having canned hundreds of jars of fruit annually. She also loved propagating irises and chrysanthemums. Her flowers and flower arrangements were admired and appreciated by family and friends.

In addition to being a devoted wife and loving mother, she taught food preservation and food preparation for the Plainfield 4-H Club. After moving to Woodland in 1972, she was a member of the Town and Country Club for many years.

She took pleasure in surrounding herself with a lovely home and a beautiful yard. Her dozens of rose bushes were a thing of beauty for all traveling up and down Gibson Road. After her husband died in 1987, she enjoyed visiting with children and friends, traveling and following issues related to agriculture.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharlene Stahl of Boise, Idaho, and Sharon Anderson of Chico; six grandchildren, Fred Stahl of Sunnyvale, Shana Stahl Richter of Boise, Jeff Stahl of Palm Desert, Lory Anderson Winklemann of Crescent City, Bill Anderson of Chico and Kelly Anderson Hambrink of Chico; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred and Emmett Heidrick of Woodland; and a sister, Vera Gorman of Yolo.

She was preceded in death by her parents in 1954, her husband in 1987, her brother Joe Heidrick, and her sister Louise Farnham.

She will be greatly missed by many. Graveside services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Davis Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.

Edward O. Crider Sr.

Edward Oliver Crider Sr. died Feb. 5, 2001, in his Esparto residence. Born Dec. 16, 1927, to James and Agnes Crider of Kerrville, Texas, he was 73.

He was a resident of Yolo County for 48 years. He was employed by Caltrans for 27 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Tarama, an aircraft carrier, during World War II. He lived in Kerrville, Texas, before moving to Esparto in 1952.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7143 and was a member of the Esparto Volunteer Fire Department for many years, serving as honorary chaplain. He served as the chairman of the Esparto community blood drive for more than 20 years. He was a member and deacon of the Esparto Baptist Church for many years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Long Crider of Esparto; his children, Diana Johnston of Sacramento, Edward Crider Jr. of Pagosa Springs, Colo., Cayce Pereira and her husband Lynn of Woodland, Richard Crider and his wife Brenda of Esparto, Jo Denning and her husband Woodie of Antelope, Bill Crider and his wife Yvonne of Sacramento, and Lisa Crider-Howell of Esparto.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Edward Whitfield of Livermore; Robin Souza and her husband Manny of Woodland; Brandon Crider of Sante Fe, N.M.; Adrienne Crider of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Stephen Rupp, and Domonique, Mary and Michael Pereira of Woodland; John, T.J. Joseph and Kamie Crider of Esparto; Andrew Corvino of Sacramento; Seth Crider of Sacramento; and Anthony, Christopher, Nicholas Crider-Howell of Esparto.

He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Shayne and Haley Souza and Aly-Jo Corvino; a sister, Minnie Pember of Bandera, Texas; three brothers, Wylie, Robert and Clarence Crider of Kerrville, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Amos and Roy Crider, and three sisters, Nancy Sherman, Leliah V. Roberts and Elizabeth Klein, all of Texas.

Visitation will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at McNary's Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Capay Cemetery, with Pastor Eldon Wilson officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Esparto Baptist Church, P.O. Box 127, Esparto; New Testament Church, 108 W. Woodland Ave., Woodland; The Gideons International, P.O. Box 773, Woodland CA 95776; or the Esparto Regional Library.

Lowell "Lew' Waters

Lowell E. "Lew" Waters died Feb. 3, 2001, at his home in Sutter County. Born on a river barge two miles below Knights Landing on April 27, 1915, he was 85.

He enlisted in the California National Guard on April 4, 1932, as a bugler. He was honorably discharged in 1940 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a third-class aviation ordnanceman on June 22, 1942. He served with the Fighting Squadron 18 on the USS Bunker Hill and Fighting Squadron 17 on the USS Hornet in the Pacific Theater, including the Iwo Jima and Okinawa campaigns. He was honorably discharged as a first-class petty officer in October 1945.

After returning to the Knights Landing area, he worked as a flagman and loader for local crop dusters and in 1947 began his career as a pilot, flying the converted WWII Stearman Trainers as a crop duster. He continued to fly for the next 35 years and, in 1980, received the outstanding pilot of the year award from the State Agricultural Aircraft Association.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and operating his amateur radio under the call letters K6 RIS.

He is survived by his daughter Linda and her husband Charlie Tome of Davis; son Larry Waters and his wife Joyce of Foresthill; two grandsons, Daniel Tome of Davis and Air Force Lt. Col. Mark L. Waters of Germany; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Waters of Woodland and James Waters of Knights Landing; and a sister, Louise Fletcher of Washington.

A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Knights Landing Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Knights Landing Fire Department, 42115 Sixth St., Knights Landing, CA 95645.

Rosalind Galvez Criste

Rosalind Galvez Criste died Feb. 8, 2001, in the Aldersons Convalescent Hospital. Born to Pedro and Maria Galvez in Roseville on March 1, 1920, she was 80 years old.

She was a resident of Yolo County for 59 years. She graduated from Roseville High School. She attended U.C. Berkeley, Heald's Business College and received her degree from Sacramento City College. She was a homemaker and also a licensed vocational nurse working at Yolo General Hospital and Woodland Memorial Hospital from 1967 to 1981.

A devoted Catholic, she was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, Holy Rosary School Mothers Club and the Young Ladies Institute. She was also a member of the Town and Country Club, Thursday Club and the Yolo 4-H Club where she taught sewing and cooking. She volunteered for the March of Dimes and the Red Cross.

She is survived by her children, Richard "Dick" Criste and wife Gloria of Sacramento; Rosemarie Blixen and husband Jan of Woodland; and John Criste, also of Woodland. Also, by her brothers, Arsenior Credo and his wife Chris of Seattle, Wash.; Ferd Galvez and wife Sue of Auburn and Richard Galvez and wife Lynn of Fremont. She is also survived by her grandchildren, John Eric Blixen, Michele Preciado, James and Steven Criste, all of Woodland; Barry Criste of Sacramento and Tanya of Dayton, Ohio; as well as nine great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Criste; brothers, Albert Credo and Pete Galvez; and sisters, Evelyn Galvez and Eleanor Olamit.

A vigil will be held Monday at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Church, with interment to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Harriet B. Bird

Harriet B. Bird, 88, died in her Woodland home after a fight against blood disease on Feb. 8, 2001.

A memorial service will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Williams Community Church with Pastor Don Arneson officiating.

She was born Oct. 12, 1912, in Williams and had been a resident of Yolo County for the past nine years. She was the daughter of Bert and Carrie Fouch of Williams.

After attending schools in Williams, she attended the Armstrong Business College in Berkeley. During World War II, while living in Long Beach, she worked at Douglas Aircraft.

She also was employed by Bell Telephone in Sacramento for several years.

She retired to the Arnold/Murphys area and entered into many service activities with her service sorority while acting as its president. She was a lifelong member of Williams Community Church. Her family described her as a caring, giving person who always put others first. One of the great joys of her life was extensive traveling throughout the world. She acquired the nickname "Hattie" because she was always ready to go at the drop of a hat.

She is survived by her son, Larry Bird of Altos; daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and Herb Waller of Folsom; sisters Bertell Freed and Augusta Fouch of Williams.

She also is survived by nieces Gayle Arce of Las Vegas and Jan Freed of Watsonville and nephew Bob Freed of Williams and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a great-grandson, great-niece and great-nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Elmond W. Bird, and brother-in-law Bill Freed.

The family requests memorials be sent to the Leukemia Foundation, Yolo Hospice or the charity of the donor's choice.

Ruth L. Koloen

A memorial service for Ruth L. Koloen, 88, of Mt. Angel, Ore., was held on Feb. 7 in Oregon.

Koloen was born on Feb. 10, 1912, and died on Feb. 3, 2001. She grew up in Oregon and worked in private homes as a housekeeper. She is survived by her husband, Oscar Koloen; two sons, Christopher Borland and Tracy Borland both of Sacramento; four stepsons and one stepdaughter, all of Oregon, plus numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Jermaine J. Morell

A Rosary and a Mass of Christian Burial were to be held today at St. James Catholic Church for Jermaine J. Morell, who died Feb. 8, 2001, in Citrus Heights. Born April 5, 1911, in St. Louis, Mo., she was 89.

She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Brewer and her husband John; eight grandchildren, Michael, Shaun, Suzanne, Edward, Phillip, Nancy, Mary and Anne; nine great-grandchildren, Noelle, Emma Rose, Nathaniel, Joshua, Sarah, Isaac, Matthew, Daniel and Valerie; and two great-great-grandchildren, Isiah and Juras.

Burial at Calvary Cemetery in Sacramento followed today's services.

Mary S. Azevedo

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday for Mary S. Azevedo, who died Feb. 9, 2001, in Davis. Born Dec. 14, 1903, in St. George, Azores, she was 97.

She was a past member of the Altar Society at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Winters, the Our Lady of Fatima Society of Dixon, UPPEC and St. James Catholic Church in Davis.

She was a 54-year resident of Yolo County, have lived in Winters, Dixon, Davis and El Macero.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Azevedo, and her brother, Joseph Silva.

She is survived by her goddaughter, Mary Avila of Palo Alto; her sister-in-law, Mary Azevedo of Gustine; her cousin, Manuel J. Silva and his wife Deirdre and their children, of El Macero; and numerous nieces and nephews.

All are invited to a time of visitation Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m., at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. in downtown Davis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 14th and B streets in Davis.

Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery. Directions to the reception will follow the graveside prayers.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Our Lady of Fatima Society, 740 Marvin Way, Dixon, CA 95620.
