Gene Silverman

Silverman went to work at the Vallejo Times-Herald when she left The Enterprise in 1981, serving as food editor until her retirement in 1996 and as a columnist until her death.

Friends and colleagues expressed deep sadness and fond memories of Silverman's life.

"She was just one of those people who walked on a rainbow," said Karen Froyland, who was The Enterprise's photo editor in the 1970s. "To Gene, everybody was important. She took time to listen to them, and do things for them."

Her longtime friend, Marilyn McElhaney, said, "She was my friend, my mentor, the big sister I had always wanted. When I wrote for the Times-Herald, Gene encouraged me and believed in me. I will always treasure her memory."

Kim Myrman, general manager of the Solano County Fair, recalled Silverman's last public appearance on July 17, when she was given a plaque honoring her years of participation in the event.

"Gene was one of the most amazing people I had ever met," she said. "Even this last summer when she was ill, she came out and joined us at the fair and lit up the entire patio.

"That was Gene -- she had a way of making people feel good and special. We'll miss her a great deal."

Born in Chicago, Silverman moved with her family to Los Angeles in 1941, where she graduated from high school. There she earned a college degree in English.

She married Malcolm Richland, raised three children and was a homemaker until 1968, when she decided to pursue post-graduate studies at UC Davis.

Silverman divorced in 1970 and embarked on a new career the next year, when she began writing for The Davis Enterprise. Known to her readers as G.L., Silverman quickly became known for her column's distinctive style.

She worked at the Times-Herald until 1989, left for three years, and was rehired in 1992 as a food writer. She worked full-time until her retirement in 1996.

Silverman continued writing a column for the Times-Herald even after an August diagnosis of terminal cancer. She moved from Vallejo into a cottage at Salem Lutheran Home in Oakland, a continuing care facility where she succumbed to her illness.

Silverman is survived by a daughter, Merry, and grandaughter, Dara Thompson, both of Hilo, Hawaii; and by her sons, Dan and his wife, Theresa, of La Quinta and Joe of Los Angeles.

George J. Ziser

George John Ziser, a longtime Yolo County resident, died in an automobile accident near Winters Sept. 24, 2003. He was 84.

His wife Ruth is recovering well from injuries suffered in the accident, their family said.

Born May 28, 1919, in El Segundo, he was the second of George and Henrietta Ziser's four children. He grew up in Los Angeles, attending Manual Arts High School. He attended UCLA for two years, but left to attend to family matters following the death of his father. He later returned to college at UC Berkeley, graduating in 1943 with a bachelor's degree in soil science.

Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a lieutenant junior grade aboard the battleship USS Massachusetts in the South Pacific. He received Bronze Stars for Service for operations in the Gilbert Islands and Marshall Islands, the 1944 Asiatic Pacific Raids and the occupation of Iwo Jima.

Following his discharge from the Navy, in 1946, he returned to Berkeley and married Ruth Jane Wood of Jonesboro, Ark. He completed a master's degree in agricultural economics at Cal in 1947. With his first son, George III, in tow, the family moved to Redlands. They stayed for the next 12 years, during which time sons Steve and Brian were born.

After a short stint with Bank of America, he went to work with the state Department of Veteran's Affairs. Over the next 12 years, he served as farm and home loan appraiser, then as district manager in the San Bernardino office.

A promotion to state manager brought the family to the Sacramento area in 1960, when they settled in Davis.

Many of the family's fondest memories revolve around trailer camping trips in the 1950s and '60s, with summer vacations in state and national parks throughout California and Oregon. He and his wife instilled an appreciation for outdoor activities, his family said, and, ever the master of the campfire, he enjoyed ending a day of hiking with a barbecue.

In 1977, at age 58, he and his wife moved to Winters and prepared for a retirement that turned out to be long and rich. Have grown up in Los Angeles, he had always longed for the life of a farmer, and now he had 10 acres along Putah Creek and an adjoining city lot.

He raised walnuts, almonds, kiwis and eight varieties of wine grapes. Each year, under the direction of his son Steve, family and friends had fun gathering for the annual grape harvest and crush. Much of the wine was bad, his family said, but all of it was enjoyed.

He also tended a small collection of fruits trees - including cherry, fig, pomegranate, apple, peach and apricot - and maintained a large summer garden. He and his wife kept loved ones well-supplied with canned tomato products, jams, pickles, juices, fruits, peppers, corn and more.

Love, admired and respected by his family, he was described as "a man of character with an unpretentious devotion to his family" - a dedicated and loving husband and father, extremely proud of his children and grandchildren, who taught his sons by example about how to work hard and be responsible while still enjoying life.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Ziser, son George Ziser and his wife Marie of Orinda, son Steve Ziser and his wife Janet of Fairfield, and son Brian Ziser and his wife Claudia of Davis. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Michael and his wife Carrie, Matthew, Joe and his wife Corinne, Emily, J.J., Diana, Kimberly, Madeline, Kristin, Samuel and Katie, and one great-grandchild, Anna.

A celebration of his life for family, friends and well-wishers for his wife's recovery will begin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at the Winters Community Center, 102 Railroad Ave. in Winters.

Because he was a lifelong proponent and supporter of education, his family asks, in lieu of flowers, donation be made to a school, college or university of the donor's choice.
