Her family eventually settled in Davis, where she graduated with the Davis High School Class of 1964. She went on to work as a UC Davis accounts payable clerk for more than 27 years.

In her spare time, she enjoyed reading Stephen King novels and spending time with her grandchildren. She also crocheted quilts she gave as gifts to family and friends. She liked traveling to Washington and to Oregon, where she planned to retire.

The second of two children, she was born May 21, 1942, to Elizabeth Drury McHugh and John Thomas McHugh. She grew up in San Mateo.

She attended the University of Oregon, where she met her husband, Bill Weitzel. They returned to the Bay Area, where she finished a bachelor's degree in sociology at San Francisco State University in 1965.

The two married in 1963, and moved to San Rafael, where their two children were born in 1967 and 1969. They owned and operated Viennese Baking Company San Francisco, a bakery they purchased from Bill's parents.

Seeking a less-stressful lifestyle, they sold the bakery in 1977 and purchased a Honda business, Grass Valley Motor Sports, in Nevada County.

They built a home in the country that allowed their children to raise sheep, horses and cattle to show at local fairs. After her children were grown, she became active in Soroptimist International of Nevada City, serving twice as president. She also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Nevada County.

In 1992, her husband of 28 years died suddenly at age 49. Two years later, she sold the Honda shop and worked as an office manager at the former Computer Learning Center and, most recently, at Paul Law Realty, both in Grass Valley.

She married Rich Stahlman in 2000. The couple was looking forward to impending retirement that included traveling, flying their airplane and spending more time with their children and grandchildren.

Besides her first husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lynn Woy, in 1999.

It was while she was stationed in Tucson, Ariz., that she met and married Floyd Dale Carroll.

Fran's greatest joys were being with people and traveling, her family said.

She volunteered and entertained on and off campus, and during sabbaticals abroad. She founded the International Friendship Committee, a group to help international students at UCD adjust to life in a new country. She also devoted time to public health organizations, and was particularly interested in helping young women improve the quality of life for themselves and their children through Planned Parenthood.

Fran and her husband traveled extensively during sabbaticals in Sri Lanka, Hawaii, Chile and Australia, visiting more than 20 countries in all. In Honolulu they found what they called their "special place" -- after retiring, they split their time between Hawaii and Davis, where they both enjoyed spending time with students and friends.

She had an indomitable spirit and a kind and hopeful word for everyone, her family said. Never one to complain, she focused instead on encouraging others with her compassion and humor. Her sister Ann called her a "social director," always planning trips and activities that are now treasured memories for those who took part.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Rich Richardson of Gilroy, and her sister Ann Kilborn of Medford, Ore..

At the request of the deceased, no memorial service will be held.

Donations may be made in memory of Frances and Floyd Carroll to the Animal Science Memorial Fund. Checks should be made payable to "Regents of the University of California," and sent to Department of Animal Science, attention: department chair, UC Davis, One Shields Ave., Davis CA, 95616-8521.
