Ruth Harrell
Ruth Harrell died on Oct. 19, 1998, at her home in Lakeland, Fla., after a lengthy illness. She was 81.

She was born on May 10, 1917.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

She is survived by her husband, Carlos; her sister, Ethel Hale; her children, Joyce Thorp of Davis and her husband, Robbin, and Tim Thompson and his wife Linda of Ocala, Fla.; her grandchildren, Donna Gary, Steve Gary, Kelly McKee and Jeff Thorp, all of Davis, Katy Ferrell of Los Altos, and Wendy Davis and Jay Thompson of Ocala, Fla.; two step-grandsons, Ron and Gerald of Lakeland, Fla.

She has 10 great-grandchildren in Davis, four in Ocala, Fla., and seven in Lakeland, Fla., as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Lucille M. Bond
Lucille Bond died at Sierra Health Care Convalescent Hospital on Nov. 4, 1998. Born Aug. 10, 1903, in Galena, Kan., she was 95.

She was a resident of Winters since 1948 and was a member of the New Life Family Church in Winters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Bond in 1981; and two sons, Don Brown in 1986 and Floyd Brown in 1994.

She is survived by her four children, Violet Cleveland of Shreveport, La., Marjorie Inman of Winters, John Brown of Davis and his wife, Ruth, and Allen Bond of Point Reyes and his wife, LaVonne. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Smith's Colonial Chapel, 14 Main St. in Winters. They are also invited to attend the funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday at the New Life Family Church, 315 Edwards St. in Winters. Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery.

Louise M. Salisbury
Louise Mary Salisbury died at the Foothill Oaks Care Center in Auburn on Nov. 3, 1998, at the age of 88.

She was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Sept. 25, 1910, and was an Auburn resident for 20 years.

She has worked as a PBX operator for most of her life.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn and was an avid seamstress and reader, family members said.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Salisbury; her two sons, Larry and Michael Salisbury; and six siblings.

She is survived by her daughter, Dortha Freeman of Davis; her sons, two Jerrold Salisbury of Gig Harbor, Wash., and George Salisbury of Redlands; her sister, Catherine Klier of Houston, Texas; 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn. Arrangements are under the direction of Lassila Funeral Chapels.

Emel A. Dewey
Emel Aksoz Dewey died at her home after her second recurrence of leukemia on Nov. 4, 1998, with her family by her side. She was 56.

She was born on Sept. 27, 1942.

She was the cherished mother of Melodi Blackmore and Roxana Dewey and devoted grandmother of Natasha, Tristan and Odessa.

A native of Turkey, she arrived in this country in 1965 with the dream that one day she would be an artist in California. Her creative spirit was awakened by her foray into stained glass and she was inspired ever since, family members said.

Her most notable works include the windows in the Fremont Presbyterian Chapel in Sacramento and the Unity Church of Auburn.

She was a member of the Artists' Collaborative Gallery in Old Sacramento and The Artery in Davis, where she resided for the last eight years.

Her stained glass works will continually shine in our community with the love, beauty and wisdom she had within, family members said. Her sparkle will be greatly missed.

Graveside services will be held at the Davis Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Douglas Wayne Belt
Douglas Wayne Belt died on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at his Davis home after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 28, 1950, in Richmond, Ca., he was 48 years old.

He was raised in Richmond, where he graduated from Richmond High School. He worked as a pipe fitter for Standard Oil Co. for many years before opening his own piping and layout design firm. He enjoyed racing motorcycles.

Belt arrived in Davis in 1990 to be near his family as his illness worsened.

He was preceded in death in November 1989 by his father, Audrey Douglas Belt.

He is survived by his mother, Betty Belt of Davis; his sisters, Barbara Clinkenbeard and her husband Michael of Loomis, and Debbie Belt of Davis; his nephews, Jacob Clinkenbeard of Sacramento and Nathan Clinkenbeard of Loomis; and his niece, Sara Clinkenbeard of Loomis.

Private graveside services will be held at the Davis Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Stephen T. Reid
Stephen T. Reid died on Jan. 20, 1999, at Sutter Davis Hospital. Born on Feb. 4, 1956 in California, he was 42.

Reid worked at the Varsity Theater in Davis for over 14 years. He has been a Davis resident for the past 36 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Reid, and his mother, Jean R. Reid.

He is survived by his aunt, Maxine King, and her husband, Dale, of Los Angeles.

Friends are invited to attend a graveside service at 11 a.m. Monday at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. If case of rain, the services will be moved to Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Joseph E. O'Brien
Joseph Earl O'Brien died peacefully at his home on Jan. 22, 1999. He was 72 years old.

He is survived by his daughters, Peggy Mauerman of Westport, Conn., and Mimi Lyon of Woodland; his grandchildren, Robert and Peter Mauerman and Thea and Kristin Labadie; and his brother, Bob O'Brien of Davis.

He was the proud father-in-law of Todd Mauerman and Craig Lyon.

He will be fondly remembered by his nephew, Tim O'Brien (Fern), and his two nieces, Theresa Tillett and Eileen O'Brien.

Little ones in the family who brought him great happiness and laughter were Katie, Marianna, Annette, Jessica, Mimi and Lonnie, family members said.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita, who passed away in 1980.

His daughters wish to express their gratitude to the staff of the Yolo County Public Guardian's Office, especially David Edwards, for the care and genuine kindness given to their father.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Chapel at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Woodland.

Beatrice G. Ybarbo
Beatrice ``Bobbie'' Gonzalez Ybarbo died at the Woodland Skilled Nursing Facility on Jan. 23, 1999. She was 62.

She was born in Midland, Texas, on July 29, 1936, to the late Telesforo and Euginia Gonzalez.

She was a 60-year resident of Yolo County. A homemaker all of her adult life, she enjoyed crafts and attending the Yolo Adult Day Health Center and Christian services.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Ayala of Woodland, Mariana Rodriguez of Esparto and her husband David, and Virginia Astran of Woodland and her husband Willie Sr.; three sons, Frank Rodriguez of Sacramento and his wife Linda, James Rodriguez of Madison and his wife Oralia, and Richard Ybarbo of Woodland and his wife Penny; two sisters, Victoria Martinez of Chowchilla and her husband Benjamin, and Marcelina Robles of Woodland; two brothers, Fernando Gonzales of Sacramento and his wife Libby, and Felix Hernandez of Woodland; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 7 p.m. today at McNary's Chapel. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Mildred M. Hickerson
Mildred M. Hickerson died on Jan. 22, 1999, at her Davis home. She was 85 years old.

Born in Saginaw, Mich., on May 26, 1913, she was the first of 10 children to be born in the United States.

She moved to Davis in 1932. She was a homemaker and was also employed by the University of California for 25 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hickerson Geer and her son-in-law, William Wesley Geer of Woodland; four grandchildren, Kerry Brenes of Fair Oaks, Lezlie DeWitt of Therton, William Geer Jr. of Woodland and Kristy Hubbard of Palo Cedro; and nine great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her niece, Anna Jane Hickerson Lasiter and her two sons Jeffrey and Ronn Lasiter of Elk Grove; and five brothers and sisters, all of whom live in Saginaw, Mich.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Monday at Mary's Chapel.

Opal B. Walker
Opal B. Walker died on Jan. 27, 1999, at Courtyard Health Care in Davis. Born on Feb. 11, 1921, in Humbolt, Iowa, she was 77 years old.

She lived in Fort Dodge, Iowa, until 1989 when she came to California. She had been a resident of Davis for the past three years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the Rainbow Club and the American Heart, the ladies auxiliary of the American Legion.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert F. Walker of Davis; three children, Nancy Walker of Carmichael, Shirley McCullough of Davis and James Walker of Rio Linda; five grandchildren, Robert J. Walker of Chicago, Shana N. Walker of Rio Linda, Chelsey K. Walker of Rio Linda, Chad McCullough of Long Beach and Shaun McCullough of Davis; and her sister, Joyce Carter of Winter Park, Fla.

Friends may call Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St., and are invited to attend a graveside service Friday at 2 p.m. at the Woodland Cemetery.

Bessie Singleton
Bessie Singleton died on Jan. 28, 1999, at the age of 87. She was a resident of Courtyard Healthcare.

Born on Sept. 12, 1911, in South Carolina, she was a housewife for 53 years and was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Davis for 35 years. She always put her church work first, family members said.

She was a member of the Yolo Fliers Golf Club since 1972 and enjoyed her golf game very much.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Singleton of Davis; her son, Keith Singleton of Saginaw, Mich.; her granddaughter, Kelly of Santa Rosa; her grandson, Jeff of Santa Rosa; her great-grandchild, Jamaica of Santa Rosa; three sisters, Osie Hannon of Green Creek, N.C., Frances Johnson of Mount Holly, N.C., and Avree Barker of Green Creek, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Her brain was destroyed by Alzheimer's disease but her heart and soul were given to her Lord Jesus Christ at an early age in life, her family said.

Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St. Visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Jose V. Robledo
Jose Vargas Robledo died on Dec. 25, 1998, at University Medical Center Hospital in Las Vegas. Born on July 31, 1903, he was 95.

A native of Guanajuato, Mexico, he became a U.S. citizen in 1949 and lived in Davis since 1960. He worked for UC Davis and later started his own landscaping business.

He was a member of the Spanish Baptist Church of Woodland and helped start a few Baptist missions in various towns near Davis.

He is survived by his son, Joseph Robledo; his daughters, Anna Marie Adames of Las Vegas and Rosita R. Garcia of Walnut Creek; his brother, Ellias Robledo of Mexico; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

His wife of 50 years, Santos, died in 1982; his son, Roman, died in the Korean War in 1951; and his grandson, Phillip, also preceded him in death.

Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be given in his name to the charity of the donor's choice.

Dora J. Crayne
Dora Jean Crayne died on Jan. 17, 1999, in her Woodland residence at the age of 78. She was born on July 5, 1920, in Penokee, Kan., to the late Samuel L. and Nellie May Ferguson.

She was a resident of Yolo County for 50 years and was employed by Nugget Market for 45 years as a meat wrapper. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose.

She was preceded by death by her husband, James T. Crayne, in 1989.

She is survived by her children, Thomas L. Crayne and his wife Pam, and Marlene K. Benedict and her husband John, all of Woodland; and four grandchildren, Mike Benedict of Woodland, Shana Benedict of Sacramento, Chris Crayne of Frost, Minn., and Cindy Crayne of Manassas, Va.

Visitation will be Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at McNary's Chapel in Woodland. Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Monument Hill Memorial Park.

Raymond A. Hoover
Raymond Alexander Hoover died on Jan. 27, 1999, at the Carmichael Mission Care Facility in Carmichael. He was 77.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1921, in Maramec, Okla., to the late John A. and Orpha Hoover.

He was a Yolo County resident for 50 years.

Hoover served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 265th Field Artillery Unit. He was also a carpenter for 50 years and a member of the Carpenters Local No. 1381.

He was a member of the Landmark Buckeye Lodge No. 195 F&AM and was a past patron of the Esparto Grafton Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.

He was a past director of the Knights Landing Community Center and a retired volunteer of the Knights Landing Fire Department. He was also a past member of the Amateur Field Trial Clubs of America.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy L. Hoover of Knights Landing; two stepdaughters, Shirley Gillham of Kenwood and her husband Peter, and Debra Lock of Santa Rosa; three grandchildren, Grace, Michael and Christopher Lock of Santa Rosa; his brother, Henry Hoover of Elk Grove and his wife Jean; his sister, Ellen Louise Wages of Woodland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Knights Landing Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Knights Landing Community Center, P.O. Box 215, Knights Landing, CA 95645.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Dorothy Knickerbocker
Dorothy Knickerbocker died on Jan. 8, 1999, at the age of 90 at Pioneer House in Sacramento, where she had been a resident since 1991.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1908, in Henrietta, Texas, the daughter of C.B. and Florence McDonald. At 16, she left home for college in Georgia. After two years there, she taught violin at Texas Tech, and at age 19 married Kenneth Knickerbocker.

Together, the couple headed for Yale where she studied violin and he English literature. Following their years at Yale, Dorothy joined the orchestra at Kingston, R.I., as first violinist. Kenneth assumed his first post at professor of English at Rhode Island State College.

In 1946, they moved to Knoxville, Tenn. There she joined the Knoxville Symphony, where she performed as first violinist for the next 16 years. He continued his academic career at the University of Tennessee, concluding as Vice President for Academic Affairs for the Tennessee system. Together, they called Knoxville home for 43 years until their move to Davis in 1989.

Throughout her adult life, Dorothy was her own woman, fiercely independent and a perfectionist as musician and seamstress extraordinaire. She prided herself on her practicality and frugality, and to those who knew her, she was forever feisty, funny, energetic and opinionated.

With her husband, she shared a consummate love for fine food, theater, travel, spectator sports, good conversation, good friends and Republican politics.

She and her husband had two children, Bob Knickerbocker of Dallas and Alzada Forbes of Davis. They survive her, as do her two grandchildren, Dana Knickerbocker, 25, and Alex Forbes, 23.

She is also survived by her twin sister, Doris Stone of Colorado Springs, as well as 11 nieces and nephews and their families and the families of four nieces and nephews who are deceased.

A private family service will be held in her loving memory on Friday, Jan. 29, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Davis.

Marie A. Scott
Marie A. Scott died on Jan. 14, 1999. Born on Sept. 1, 1922, in Chicago Heights, Ill., she was 76.

She grew up in Chicago Heights and attended the University of MIchigan Nursing Program.

She enjoyed playing bridge and was very devoted to her children and grandchildren, family members said.

She was a resident of Davis for the past eight years. She was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Woodland and St. Raphael Church in Crystal, Minn. She spent much of her time traveling between Davis and Plymouth, Minn., to be near her children.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Hansen of Ridgecrest, Laurie Huber of Plymouth, Minn., and Debra Hartnett of Davis. She also leaves seven grandchildren.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 1 p.m. today at Holy Rosary Church in Woodland. interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel of Davis.

Vernon S. Dallman Jr.
Vernon Salig Dallman Jr. died on Jan. 16, 1999, at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He was 70.

He was born in Sacramento on Aug. 7, 1928, to Vernon and Etta Dallman, who preceeded him in death.

A Yolo County resident for 10 years, he was a real estate investor for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Dallman of Esparto; his son, David Dallman of Santa Rosa, a pilot; his daughter, Diana Silva of Benicia and her husband Michael; his sister, Elaine Dallman of San Francisco; and his three grandchildren, Daniel Silva, Katie Marie Silva and Gregory Silva, all of Benicia.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at McNary's Chapel in Woodland.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Friends of the Esparto Regional Library Fund, P.O. Box 787, Esparto, CA 95627, or to the Madison Volunteer Fire Department, Madison, CA 95653.

McNary's Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.
