Winifred Spurr

Winifred (Blair) Spurr died at home on Jan. 22, 2003. She was 86 years old. She had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for many years.

Her son John and her longtime caregiver and dear friend, Ilisaveci Qeleca, were at her side when she died.

She was born on Nov. 3, 1916, in Rochester, N.H. Her father died when she was just 5 years old. Her mother remarried and moved them to Los Angeles. She graduated summa cum laude from UCLA in 1938 with a degree in botany. She went on to earn a master's degree in botany in 1940.

In 1942, she married Arthur R. Spurr. During the war years, she worked as a research scientist in the Salinity Lab at UC Riverside and co-authored several scientific articles.

She joined her husband in Cambridge, Mass., in 1946. After he received his Ph.D., they moved to Davis in 1948.

She was involved in many community activities during her 54 years in Davis. She was active, with her husband, in the founding and development of the Davis Parent Nursery School.

As a result of her renowned talents as a gardener and baker, she won numerous prizes at area fairs. She donated her winnings to the school.

Along with her husband, she became a charter member of the Davis Unitarian Fellowship in 1955 and was one of the early Sunday school teachers. She also participated in the Davis Art Center in its early years. She was active in Friends of the Davis Arboretum for many years as a docent, docent teacher and display researcher.

She was a voracious reader and lover of language, particularly English and French.

She especially enjoyed entertaining students and other visitors from foreign countries in her home. She returned to work in the 1970s as the administrative assistant for the Ecology Group at UC Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur. She is survived by three sons, Jeffrey Spurr of Cambridge, Mass., John Spurr and his wife Kathleen of Davis, and Douglas Spurr of Corralitos; and daughter, Pamela and her husband Nick Ranceford-Hadley of London.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Sean and Sarah Spurr and Samuel and Stephanie Seager; her sister, Ramona Mathewson of Huntington Beach; and her niece Juliana Mathewson Bobrow, also of Huntington Beach.

She will be remembered for her loving nature, patience, generous heart and compassion for others.

A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Unitarian Church of Davis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Friends of the Davis Arboretum, c/o Arboretum, Davis, CA 95616.

David C. Hudson

David C. Hudson died on Jan. 25, 2003, at Kaiser Hospital in Sacramento after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born on June 26, 1944, in Denver, Colo., to Grant and Theresa Hudson, he was 58 years old.

He graduated from San Juan High School in Sacramento in 1962. He earned his bachelor's degree in biochemistry from UC Davis in 1972. He worked as a computer programmer for UC Davis for many years. He also worked for Resources Management Associates in Fairfield and as a private consultant.

He had been a resident of Yolo County for the past 40 years, living in Winters and Davis. He was an avid hiker in state and national parks as well as an ardent environmentalist. Yosemite was his favorite national park.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Hudson.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Kitty Hudson of Davis; father, Grant Hudson of Denver, Colo.; and children, Alexandra Hudson and Evan Hudson, both of Davis. He also leaves his brothers and sisters, Grant, Greg, Geoff, Paul, Kathy and Terry; his nephew, Grant; and his nieces, Ishara and Elana.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church of Davis, 1620 Anderson Road. Remembrances may be made in his name to the National Brain Tumor Foundation, 414 13th St., Suite 700, Oakland, CA 94612-2603 or to the Natural Resource Defense Council at www.nrdc.org.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Yolanda Millington

Yolanda (Limjoco) Millington, 80, of Hunt Way in Davis, died Dec. 19, 2002, at the Sierra Convalescent Hospital from complications following a stroke.

Born Feb. 10, 1922, in Manila, the Philippines, she was the daughter of Angel Sr. and Felisa (Lejano) Limjoco. She attended St. John's Academy in Manila, graduating in 1939. She was also a student at the University of the Philippines, but her studies were interrupted by World War II.

Following the war, she met Lt. Cmdr. John H. Millington of the U.S. Navy. The couple was married on May 28, 1947. They lived in the Philippines until 1961, at which time she immigrated with her husband and family to Sacramento. In 1969, she moved to Davis, where she lived for 33 years until her death.

She worked in sales for many years, selling products for Avon, Shaklee, Mary Kay and others, actively advocating proper nutrition and regular exercise, and also taking pride in personal grooming and appearance. She attended the Methodist Church for a number of years, as well as the Davis Christian Assembly, and most recently the New Testament Church in Woodland.

During the 1970s, she was an active member of the Stonegate Folk Dancers, a local dance group led by Viola Herman. The dancers performed regularly at schools and other community events. In addition to folk dance, she enjoyed belly dancing, gardening, bridge, reading and daily devotionals. She was also a regular visitor at the Davis Senior Center.

She is survived by her children, June Millington of Goshen, Mass.; Jean Madeloni of Davis; Richard Millington of East Palo Alto; Steve Millington of Sacramento; James Millington of El Dorado Hills; David Scott Millington of Kurtistown, Hawaii; and Sylvia Lyons of Greenland, N.H. She is also survived by two brothers, Ben and Nick Limjoco, who live in the Philippines; and by 12 grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. Memorial contributions may be made to The Institute for the Musical Arts, P.O. Box 867, Goshen, MA 01032.

Mary M. Holliday

Mary M. Holliday of Davis died unexpectedly of natural causes Feb. 5, 2003, while at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. She was 77 years old.

She was born in Santa Monica on Dec. 29, 1925. She came to Davis in 1948 when she married Terrell Holliday, then a student at UC Davis. In the early years of their marriage, she worked in the university library. After her children were grown, she worked as a librarian at the Woodland Clinic. She was also a longtime member of the Yolo Fliers Country Club.

She is survived by her husband; children, Scott Holliday and Marisa Altick; and five grandchildren. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Peter G. Kaufman

Peter G. Kaufman of Davis died on Feb. 5, 2003, at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, following a Davis accident in which his bicycle collided with a car. He was 52 years old.

He was born on Aug. 6, 1950, in Boston, to John and Beverly Kaufman. He was one of three children. In 1954, he and his family moved to Concord, where he remained until coming to Davis in 1997, when he married Sherry Ann Akrawi on Nov. 9.

He received his bachelor's degree from Pacific University in Oregon and began teaching special education at the Shelter Workshop in Contra Costa. He also was a member of the Woodland Seventh-day Adventist Church and was a Bible instructor for Discover Bible School.

He had many enjoyments in his life, including hiking, camping, gardening and sky-diving. He was a loving and caring husband.

He is survived by his wife Sherry of Davis; brother Jeff and his wife Nancy Kaufman, and their two sons Aaron and John of Redhat; and sister Susan Hall of Spokane, Wash. He is further survived by his brothers-in-law Randy Akrawi of Napa, and Ray and his wife Sandra Akrawi of Santa Rosa. His mother-in-law Hiam Akrawi also survives him.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 3 p.m. today at the Woodland Seventh-day Adventist Church, 29 Elliott St., Woodland. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Susan M. Wershing

A funeral will be held Saturday morning in Rochester, N.Y., for former Davis resident Susan M. Wershing, who died Nov. 24, 2002. She was 64.

A Davis resident from 1980 to 1994, she is the founding editor of Dance Teacher Magazine. She also was a co-founder of the Davis Comic Opera Company and was a former Radio City Rockette.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Frances Medler. She is survived by her children, Stephen, Diane Despopoulos, Gregory and Cynthia Barry; six grandchildren; and a brother, Jeff Medler.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Anthony Funeral Chapel, 2305 Monroe Ave. in Rochester, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be directed to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3101 Industrial Drive, Suite 210, Raleigh, N.C. 27609.

Eleanor E. Candelo

Davis native Eleanor E. Candelo died March 17, 2003, at the age of 85. She was born Dec. 29, 1917, on a farm near El Macero to Bernardo and Angela Calori. She graduated from Davis High School in 1937 and married Elmo Candelo in 1939. She lived in Davis her entire life, celebrating 63 years of marriage in October.

She was a homemaker until the 1960s when she became a cook at Emerson Junior High School cafeteria. She retired in 1973. She was active in the VFW women's auxiliary and wrapped bandages for the American Cancer Society for many years.

Most recently, she was an avid Bocci player. She participated in the Senior Olympics with her husband Elmo and won many trophies and medals with the Fairfield Bocci Association. In August 2002, she won her last championship while fighting cancer. Her team won first place.

She is survived by her husband, Elmo Candelo, and their three children, John Candelo and his wife Sharon of Napa, Leo Candelo and his wife Nancy of Davis and Shirley Watkins and her husband John of Fairfield.

She is further survived by six grandchildren, Lisa Candelo of Fair Oaks, Wendy Zane and her husband Brian of Vacaville, J. David Candelo and his wife Jennifer of Davis, Robyn Klug and her husband Rob of Lompoc, Jennifer Tomson and her husband Mike of Fairfield and Julie Watkins of Toluca Lake. She also leaves four great-grandchildren, Nicole and Kyle Zane and Howie and Lacey Tomson.

The Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church, followed by Burial in the Davis Cemetery and a reception at St. James Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95617, or to the Leukemia Society, 1390 Market St., San Francisco, CA 94102-5306.

Evelyn Cleaver

Evelyn Cleaver died peacefully in her sleep on March 16, 2003, at Sunbridge Care in Weed. She was 92.

She was born in Raymond, Ill., on May 26,1910. She taught elementary school for many years and was involved in numerous community and church organizations. She brought joy to myriad lives, including the young children whom she loved to teach and the elderly who continually asked her to play the piano.

Her family will miss her greatly and wish her well on her journey.

She is survived by her sons, Gene Cleaver of Mt. Shasta and Lance Cleaver of Salinas; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, at Davis Community Church, 412 C St. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to the church.

Elsie C. Ketelaar

Elsie C. Ketelaar died peacefully at home on March 18, 2003. Born in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 22, 1911, she was 91 years old.

She lived in Wisconsin, Florida, New York and Arizona before coming to Davis in 1988. She was a gifted and insightful teacher and mentor at Saugerties High School in Saugerties, N.Y., for 20 years before her retirement in 1977.

She will be missed for her lively wit, tremendous interest in the world and a love of learning.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Ketelaar, and her youngest daughter, Joan Anne Ketelaar Saenz. She is survived by her older daughter, Mary Lee Thomson and her husband Joseph; and granddaughters, Pamela Babington Bradbury and Lynda Mary Thomson. She is further survived by great-grandsons Kyle and Kameron Bradbury as well as nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Davis Funeral Chapel. The family requests no flowers.

Kay King

Kay King, surrounded by loved ones, died at her home at dawn on March 17, 2003, after a long battle with breast cancer. She was 85.

Katharine Elizabeth Snow was born on July 7, 1917, in Chico. Her father was Raymond Snow of Durham, Maine, a Mayflower descendent who came to California at the turn of the century and became a rancher and businessman. Her mother was Caroline Slocum Snow of Magalia, whose parents were early California pioneers and owned a silver mine in Butte County.

As a young person, King was an accomplished horsewoman and artist. She attended Chico State College and UC Berkeley, where she majored in art history. After college, she won a scholarship to study fashion design in New York City but the outbreak of World War II kept her in California.

She was working as a court recorder in Berkeley when she met Walter King. They married after a brief courtship just before the Navy shipped him to North Africa. They lived in Berkeley after the war, began a family, and moved to Sebastopol in 1949, where they grew apples. In 1958, they moved to the Stockton area, where Kay worked as an administrative assistant at a fiberboard plant.

The family moved to Davis in 1962. She worked at the physical plant at UC Davis and as a legal assistant for a local lawyer before finding her niche as the court clerk in Davis. She retired shortly after being widowed and devoted herself to her many interests. She was a peace activist and an avid and knowledgeable horticulturist known for her enchanted gardens. She served on several city and county committees, where she was noted for her sharp wit and intelligence and her commitment to affordable senior housing in Davis.

She is remembered for her beautiful garden, great cooking, love of family and friends, kindness and generosity, sense of humor, service to community, insatiable curiosity, inventiveness, boundless creativity, unique spirit and the incredible ability to turn lemons into lemonade.

She is survived by daughter Lynda King and her husband Dale Lyberger; daughters Denise King and Beth Valentine; granddaughter Amy Kurtz and her husband Brian Kurtz; grandson Ben Lyberger and his fianc/e Cayce Wallace, and grandson Abe Valentine. Additional survivors include great-grandchildren Emma and Samantha Kurtz, and Alex and Shealyn Wallace. She also is missed by many nieces and nephews, wonderful friends, neighbors, and a large extended family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Yolo Hospice or the Davis Senior Citizens' Building Fund.

A memorial service will be held later this spring in her garden.

Mary F. Farrell

Mary Frances (Kennedy) Farrell, also known as Sister Mary Vincent Farrell, died March 16, 2003, at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse at age 89. She was born on July 6, 1913, in Los Angeles to Richard and Mae Kennedy. She graduated from George Washington High School in 1931.

In 1932, she entered the Dominican Sisters at Mission San Jose, but two years later left the community because of health concerns. She eventually married John Eugene Farrell in 1941. They moved to Davis in 1943. She graduated from Cal State Sacramento with a teaching credential and taught for 22 years in Woodland, Vacaville and Dixon. After retirement, she volunteered at St. James Catholic School in Davis.

In October 1978, she re-entered the Dominican Sisters at Mission San Jose, fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a sister, and took the name of Sister Mary Vincent Farrell.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene and her son Richard Lauren, her son-in-law Ron Renner and grandchildren Mary Louise Farrell and Tommy Flageolle. She is survived by four daughters, Marita Flageolle and her husband Dave of Arvada, Colo., Catherine Ding and her husband Dennis of Sacramento, Margaret Garrett and her husband Dennis of Davis, and Mary "Jeannie" Tice and her husband Allan of Georgetown; and daughter-in-law Merle (Farrell) Ethridge.

She is further survived by grandchildren Andrea Pitt of Minnesota and Renee Luther of Tennessee, Suzette Land and Bernadette Harrington of Colorado and Jeanette Flageolle of Florida, Michael Martin of Woodland, Michelle Valincia and Christine Martin of Rocklin, Cynthia Chesler of Sherman Oaks, Dave Renner of Susanville, Ken and Becky Renner of Chico, Shane Garrett and his wife Christy of West Sacramento, Rena Garrett and Jennifer Garrett of Woodland Katy Garrett of Davis, Courtney and Heather Tice of Georgetown, and Erin Brennen, Christian Hill, Bryan Hill and Michelle Elliston of the Sacramento area.

Thirteen great-grandchildren and the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose also survive her.

A Rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Dominican Sisters Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Sisters Chapel, 43326 Mission Blvd. in Fremont. Burial will follow in the Dominican Sisters Cemetery.

John W. Moreland

John William Moreland died unexpectedly at his Davis home on March 25, 2003. He was 54.

He was born Sept. 21, 1948, in Danville, Ill., one of three children of John and Norma Moreland. After high school, Moreland honorably and faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam. After his tour of duty, he went back to school and received a bachelor's degree in business administration. For the last six years, he was a production worker for Flowmaster Muffler Manufacturing in West Sacramento.

He had many enjoyments in his life, including bowling and making sports jewelry. He was a professional bowler for a number of years, winning several bowling titles, and bowling a perfect 300 game.

Moreland was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Calori of Davis; a son and a daughter; a stepson and a stepdaughter; two sisters; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church, 14th and B streets in Davis. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.

James C. Fan

James Chuckming Fan died in the early morning hours of March 22, 2002, at his home. He was 88 years old.

He was born Feb. 1, 1914, in the province of Cheking, China, one of five children of Chengtao and She Fan. He was a dedicated student and loyal military officer, serving as a colonel in the Taiwan army during World War II.

After the war, he went to work for the Taipei Municipal Transportation Facility as a director of automobile transportation. A dedicated employee, he never missed a day's work; his children say he passed his strong work ethic on to them.

He became a Christian in 1983 and remained a sincere believer in the last years of his life. A wonderful and loving husband and father, he was honest, truthful and respectful toward people he dealt with, his family says. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his daughter, Yi-Cheng Fan.

He is survived by his wife, Yi-Jen Cheng Fan of Davis; and his children, Hui-Jun Fan, Hui-Wen Fan and Yi-gong Fan, all of China; Hui-guang Fan, Whei-min Francis Fan and Whei-Mei Teresa Fan of Davis; and Yee-Wei David Fan of Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China.

He is also survived by his brothers, Xu Tang Fan and Xu Chun Fan of China; his sisters, Cui-Jiao Fan, Mong-Jiao Fan and Yun-Jiao Fan of China; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Davis Chinese Christian Church, 536 Anderson Road. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.
