Death, Burial, Cemetery & Obituaries

Howcroft, Thomas Joseph (P. Eng.) - Peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on Monday, August 8, 2005 in his 81st year. Dearly loved by wife Anne (nee Carney). Dearly missed and cherished by his sons Michael (Louise) and Lorne (Sandy) and daughters Dorothy (Phil Allchin), Mary (Dean Hingley), Cathy (Brian Agg) and Anne-Marie (Trevor Shin). Fondly remembered by brothers Vincent (Margaret) and Lorne (Carmela). Grandpa will be remembered always by his fifteen grandchildren. Thomas was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #36, the Knights of Columbus and served overseas in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. Friends will be received by the family on Wednesday evening from 7-9 and Thursday afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Cattel, Eaton and Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Funeral Mass will be held at ST. AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH, 58 Sydenham Street on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Cremation to follow. In kindness, donations to St. Peter's Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or the Parkinsons Society would be appreciated by the family.

Villeneuve, Rene Joseph - Ending life simply as he wished at home, Rene passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2005, in his 61st year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Yvonne Villeneuve (Keast). Loving father to Annette and Don Peters, Dan and Lisa Villeneuve and Robin and Tammy Villeneuve. Cherished Papa to Nevada, Alexis, Eric, Cple, Oliver, Autumn and Phoenix. Special thanks to his mother, Maxine Dubois and sister Sandra Williams who came from Ottawa to care for him in his final days. Friends will be received by the family Wednesday afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Cattel, Eaton and Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where a Service for Rene will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Cremation to follow. As with Mom's passing, in lieu of flowers, please drop some coins in your favourite slot machine in our parent's honour.

Ironwing, Lori Dianne - Peacefully at the tender age of 46 years at St. Joseph's Villa on Sunday, August 7, 2005. Cherished and loved by her daughter Tina Harvey and her grandchildren Katelyn and Ashley. Loved by her father John Ogden, sisters Selina (Don), Janice (Brad) and Sharon (Peter) and brothers Steve (Vicky) and Jeff (Toni). Sadly missed by her nephews, aunts and uncles. Predeceased by her mother Shirley Pace, son Codey Bear and sister Victoria. Lori expressed her feelings through her poetry. Many thanks are extended to the staff at St. Joseph's Villa and St. Joseph's Hospital nephrology department for the care they provided Lori. A Celebration of Lori's life will be held by family and friends. In kindness, donations to the Kidney Foundation would be appreciated.

Smith, Ronald Edward - Peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 in his 72nd year. Loving and devoted husband to Marie (nee Billard). Loved always and missed by his sons Ron (Cathy) and Danny (Sylvia), brothers William and Barry, brothers-in-law Ken (Debbie) and Rick (Marg) and sister-in-law Beverly (David). Remembered fondly by his 5 grandchildren Sean, Cheryl, Rachael, Paul and Michelle. Friends will be received by the family for a Graveside Service at GROVE Cemetery on Friday, August 12, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. In kindness, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Jacobs, Katharine - Peacefully at her home on Friday August 5, 2005, in her 100th year. Beloved wife of the late Joseph (1991) and sadly missed by her nephew Walter Rider (Jane); great nephew Gregory Rider (Marcella); close friend Ken Wright and many cousins and friends. Friends will be received by the family on Sunday afternoon from 2-4 at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Funeral Mass Monday morning at 11 o'clock at ST. AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH, 58 Sydenham St., Dundas. Interment St. Augustine's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Prayer Vigil Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Funeral Home.

Bergsma, John - Peacefully at St Joseph's Hospital on Tuesday August 2, 2005 in his 82nd year. Beloved husband of the late Lois. Dear father of Wietske (Chris) of Ancaster, Rinskje (David) of Burlington, Edo (Linda) of Orkney, Bart of Lynden and John of Greensville. Grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Predeceased by granddaughter Kelly. Expressions of sympathy to Charity of Choice. A graveside service will be held at Westover Cemetery on Thursday August 4, 2005 at 3:00 p.m.

Francis, Shirley Lorraine (Sue) - Peacefully on Saturday, July 30th, 2005 at the A. R. Goudie Salvation Army Eventide Home in her 75th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband J. D. Francis in February 1990. Cherished and loved always by her son Bruce (Pauline), daughters Brenda Collins (Richard) and Bonnie McQuat (Len). Missed dearly by brothers Raymond Millard (Nan) and Aubrey Millard (Judy) and sisters Isabella Nelson (Robert), Betty Norton (Donald) and Sharon Forsythe (Ron). Remembered always by her 6 grandchildren Todd, Trevor, Michael, Jennifer, Gregory and Scott and her great-grandchildren Leah, Kyler, Bailey, Jason and Krysten. Predeceased by her parents Raymond and Isabella Millard and her sister Claudette at infancy. Sue was a member of the Dundas Baptist Church in her later years where she enjoyed singing in choir. Friends will be received by the family Tuesday afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Cattel, Eaton and Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where a Service of Celebration for Sue will be held on Wednesday at 11:00. Interment Grove Cemetery. In kindness, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Alzheimers Society or A. R. Goudie Salvation Army Eventide Home, would be appreciated by the family.

Varey, John Charles - October 29, 1908 - July 23, 2005. Jack had an adventurous life which included flying Sopwith Camels and climbing Machu Picchu. He walked the Bruce Trail end to end and started university studies after his retirement. All his working life he dealt with communication technology that over the years moved from Morse code to satellite communications. Dad was busy with his "projects" until he went into hospital at the end of May. Jack's wife Kathleen died in 1969. He leaves sons, Douglas (Lynne), Ray (Lynn) and Philip (Beth), grandchildren, Matt, Jeff, Chris, Allison and David and long time friend and hiking companion, Eva. He has departed for other adventures just as his great grandson Samuel joins life's journey. Friends will be received by the family Tuesday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. at the Cattel Eaton and Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street Dundas, where a Service for Jack will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Cremation has occurred. In lieu of flowers donations to the Bruce Trail Association would be appreciated.

Stalf, Gisela Erika - Peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, July 21, 2005 in her 81st year. Predeceased by her husband Ludwig. Gisela will be greatly missed by her extended family and many friends in Canada, Germany and the United States. Predeceased by brother Ruprecht and sister Ingleborg. Gisela was a faithful and dedicated member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hamilton for many years. Friends will be received Tuesday evening from 7-9 and Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 until the time of Service at 2:00 at the Cattel, Eaton and Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Interment Grove Cemetery. In keeping with Gisela's wishes, donations to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Szwec, Michael Peacefully with his family by his side on August 22, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital, in his 65th year. Beloved husband of Marilyn celebrating 37 years of marriage. Loving father of David and Dana, dear brother of Paul Sweck, Walter Szwec, Elsie Kneller (Ed), and brother in law Jim and Ann Sharp. He will be forever remembered by his nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. Always an active volunteer, Michael touched many hearts through his musical talents. Michael is a retired employee of Dofasco for which he worked 32 years, he was Past President and active member of Hamilton Old Time Fiddlers Association, and a member of Rainy Lake Hunt Camp. As per his wishes cremation has taken place and a Service of Rememberance and Celebration of Michael's Life will be held at ST. MARK'S UNITED CHURCH, Dundas at 2 pm. on Monday August 29th 2005. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juravinski Cancer Center or the St. Peter's Foundation.

GOODRAM, Edith Lorenza (RN) -It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edith at McMaster University Medical Centre on Saturday, December 17, 2005. Beloved wife of the late John Goodram (2001). Loving mother of John and his wife Kathryn of Airdrie, Alberta, Brian and his wife Maureen of Ancaster and Kathryn of Ancaster. Loving grandmother of Ryan (Laurie), John, Alexandria, Jamie (Jodi), Jennifer (Vernon Smith), B.J. and Carly (Showkenik). Great-grandmother of Hannah, Trevor, Carson and Lauryn. Dear sister of Dorothy Finlayson, Kay Cunningham and the late Jack Douglas and Nora Rutledge. Friends will be received by the family on Monday afternoon and evening from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where the service for Edith will take place Tuesday at 11a.m. Cremation to follow. Boers, Corstiaan - Suddenly at home in his 73rd year on Wednesday, December 14, 2005. Dear husband to Magdalena. Dear father to Arlene (Tom Jacobs), Mark, Paul (Kristen) and Dan. Loving grandfather to Sam, Ben and Megan Jacobs and Clayton Boers and Jack Boers. Corstiaan was the youngest of 16 children of Jacobus and Alida Boers. In keeping with Corstiaan's wishes, a private family service and Interment has taken place. If so desired, donations made to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Fielding, David Edward - Suddenly at his home on Tuesday, December 13, 2005, in his 64th year. Loved and respected father of Sarah (Jeff Wallace) of Jerseyville, Adam (Nicole) of Hamilton and James of Ancaster. Papa of Hayden, Ethan and Atticus, lifelong friend of Pam and mentor to Jerome. Dave was the retired proprietor of Century Pines Golf Course. Friends will be received by the family on Friday afternoon and evening from 2-4 & 7-9 at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where the Service for Dave will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment Mt. Zion Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to McMaster Children's Hospital would be appreciated by the family. Don't put of til tomorrow, what you can do today.

Brown, Mariana Clare - Peacefully at home surrounded by family on December 12, 2005, aged 66. Daughter of the late John and Trude Paterson. Beloved wife of David, loving mother to Elizabeth Yetisir of Deep River, Catherine (Rob) MacLean of Huntsville and Alison Brown (Alex Dick) of North Vancouver, and grandmother to Mike and Emily Sezen Yetisir, Allan and Sandra MacLean and Isobel Dick, and sister to Peter and Jamie Paterson. Predeceased by sister Caroline. Visitation at ST. JAMES', 137 Melville Street, Dundas on Friday, December 16th from 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will take place at ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST, Charlton Avenue West, Hamilton on Saturday, December 17th at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Mariana has requested donations to either the Church of St. John the Evangelist or the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Matheson, Evelyn - Peacefully in her home on December 6th 2005. Evelyn will be missed by her brother George Matheson of B.C., 5 nephews, 3 nieces and several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Grace Elliot of B.C. and Jean Neale of Dundas. Evelyn received a Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University and a Master of Arts from Columbia University. Her training as a registered nurse led her to a long career with the World Health Organization. With WHO, she established nursing schools throughout the developing world. Her work took her to the Middle and Far East, Africa, and the South Pacific. Evelyn has made a great contribution to nursing education and international healthcare. Her stories of travel and sense of adventure will be greatly missed. Friends will be received by the family, on Friday December, 16th from 10:00 am until the service for Evelyn at 11:00 am at the Cattel Eaton and Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. The Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or charity of choice.
