Mary I. Thompson
THOMPSON, Mary I. (nee Brown) – (life-long member of Rebekah Lodge 334 Orono; avid euchre player) – at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, after a brief illness, on Wednesday, May 2, 2007. Mary, beloved wife of the late Roy M. Thompson. Loving mother of Gary of Leskard, Laurie and his wife Ruth of Bowmanville, Dennis and his wife Maria of Oshawa, Randy of Newcastle, and Linda and her husband Doug Piper of Peterborough. Sadly missed by grandchildren Mark, Stephen, Angie, Nicole, Susanne, Norman, Penny, and 18 great-grandchildren. Also missed by many friends and neighbours, especially at Jubalee Beach, and by her four-legged companions Tyke, Snowball, and Smokie. Mary’s family would like to express a special thank-you to all the nurses and staff of Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, especially Dr. Corpus and Dr. Ho. Donations in her memory to Bowmanville Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
Funeral Details: Friends may drop in for an informal visiting and refreshments at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights) on Saturday, May 5, from 1-3 p.m. A Rebekah service will be held at 3:00 p.m., followed by a private family Interment of cremated remains at Orono Cemetery.

Neil Currie
CURRIE, Neil – (Veteran WWII, retired bricklayer, Local 2, long-time parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Newcastle) – suddenly but peacefully at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, with his family by his side, on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, in his 88th year. Neil, loving and devoted husband of Margo (nee Fogarty) for 57 years. Beloved father of Nora, David (Jackie), Paul, John (Sharon), and Coleen “Dene” (Terry). Loving Papa to Morgan, Molly, Sarah, Neil, Nora, John, and Christine. Dear brother of Sarah McKinnon, Sr. Teresa Currie, Dougall Currie, and the late Johnny, Angus, Mickey and Christine Currie. Sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. Neil was born in Sydney Mines, N.S. and came to Toronto, where he met and married his true love, Margo. They raised their family in Scarborough, attending St. Maria Goretti Parish, before retiring in Wilmot Creek, Newcastle.
Funeral Details: Friends may call at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights) on Friday, May 4, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 3:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI R.C. CHURCH, 214 King Ave. E., Newcastle, on Saturday, May 5, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the church hall. Cremation with Interment Bond Head Cemetery at a later date.

Elizabeth "Betty" Blaker
BLAKER, Elizabeth (Betty) – (35-year member of the Lionesses, Wednesday Morning Group at St. George’s Anglican Church, and Providence Shaw Women’s Institute; retired 13-year teacher with the Newcastle Northumberland School Board) – peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Friday, April 20, 2007, in her 88th year. Betty, loving wife for 65 years of Patrick Blaker of Newcastle. Devoted mother of Judith Elizabeth Bateman and her husband Ken Mitchell of Spruce Grove, Alberta; David Patrick Blaker and his wife Lenora of Ottawa; Catherine Louise Blaker of Spruce Grove, Alberta; Timothy William Blaker and his wife Sandra of London, and Gordon Douglas Blaker and his wife Muriel of Newcastle. Sadly missed by 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Sister of Anna Hall of Belleville.
Funeral Details: Following cremation, a memorial service will be held in the chapel of NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights) on Tuesday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m., with visiting for two hours prior to the service. Rev. David Saunders officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. George’s Anglican Church Link Fund would be appreciated by Betty’s family.

RIEDE, Jack (Oct. 12, 1915 - April 20, 2007) Canadian book publisher, past vice- president and board member of then Longmans Canada; also president of Athenaum Verlag GmbH, Germany, and special emissary to Germany of William Jovanovich, chairman of then Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich; served on executive of Canadian Book Publishers' Council; helped establish Canada at Frankfurt Book Fair; founding president of Canadian Association for the Advancement of Netherlandic Studies: multi-lingual (linguistics grad, Leiden University, Holland), author and simultaneous translator. Began publishing in Holland pre-WW II; served with the Netherland Armed Forces in Holland and Indonesia. Main member of Rotterdam-based underground group (led by his uncle, Pierre Riede) that rescued Allied airmen. Tributes to his uncle from U.S President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Air Field Marshall Sir Arthur Tedder and Prince Bernhardt, Netherlands are among Riede memorabilia. In Canada, Jack's career spanned Copp Clark, Macmillans, and Longmans. Later, with wife Doris Hopper-Riede, he co-founded Chrysallis Communications. Beloved father of: Joyce Lancaster and Lt. Col. Jennifer Addicott; father-in-law of Steve Lancaster and Lt. Col. James Addicott; grandfather to Lancasters: Joanna, Denise and Ross; and to Addicotts: Gary and Janice; uncle to Bas Hoogenbergh, (Ellie) and their daughter Helene (Rick) Ortez. Esteemed by Doris' family, including sister Donna (Walter) Wisniowski, (Joseph and Jamie); late brother Glen's former wife Kimberly Delahunty (Zackariah and Chelsea); the Stinsons. The Riedes had friends everywhere, including Portugal where they lived winters. He is irreplaceable, mostly to Doris as: husband, love, lover, best friend, and soul mate. Funeral Details: A gathering was held Tues. April 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Scarboro Golf and Country Club, Gold Room, 321 Scarborough Golf Club Rd., Toronto: 416-266-4546.

JENKINS, Everett Milton (Past President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 173; Past President and Zone Chairman of the Newcastle Lions Club) – suddenly in his 78th year on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville. Everett Milton Jenkins, loving husband and best friend of June (nee Rowland) for over 50 years. Loving father of Debbie (Larry), Timm (Sheilah), Darlene (Kevin), and Kevin. Loving Poppa to Lindsay, Kiley, Jaime, Ryan, Olivia, and Talon. Brother to Helen McCarthur of Timmins. Predeceased by brother Herb and sisters Loretta and Brenda. Loving wife and best friend for 25 years of Ken Crichton of Newcastle. Devoted mother of Shawn, Christopher, and Alexander. Beloved daughter of Shirley and her husband Bob Revell. Dear sister of Dave Adams and Barb Adams. Loving daughter-in-law of William and Mary Crichton of London, Ontario; sister-in-law of Rod and Colleen Crichton, and aunt of Allison, Kevin, and Thomas. Anson lived in dignity for 11 years after being diagnosed with advanced C.O.P.D. and Nefritis, a kidney disease. Predeceased by his wife Dorothy and son Dennis. Loving father of Margaret and her late husband Sam Price and Jane and her husband John Downey. Anson will be sadly missed by his extended family and friends.
