John Trenwith Shannon
SHANNON, John Trenwith – (Employee of the Ontario Ministry of Finance, Oshawa) suddenly at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville on Tuesday, April 10, 2007, in his 57th year. John is survived by his brother Fred of British Columbia, and predeceased by his brother David and his parents Fred James and Alberta Louise (nee Trenwith). Uncle of Donna, Katherine, David, and Fred Shannon. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in John’s memory would be greatly appreciated.
Funeral Details: Friends may call at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights), on Friday, April 13, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CHURCH, 214 King Ave. E., Newcastle, on Saturday, April 14, at 11:00 a.m. Interment St. George’s Cemetery, Newcastle.

Terry Davis
DAVIS, “TERRY” (Spitz) [Member of the Peterborough, Ontario and Canadian Halls of Fame; Runner of the Spitz Open] – Peacfully at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto on Sunday, April 8, 2007 in his 68th year. Father of Lee Anne Davis and stepfather of Karen Ross. Loving son of Janet and the late Hilliard Davis. Terry is survived by his sister Marilyn Simons (Hank), brother John “Shooter” Davis (Odette) and predeceased by his sisters Carol Simons (Gord) and Nancy Roberton (Jack). He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and all of his extended family, teammates and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his guardian angels, Gord and Kathy Sale, for all of the care and compassion. Lawrence (Larry) Greer
GREER, Lawrence George (Larry) born December 13, 1920; passed away at home in Newcastle, Ontario, on Friday, April 6, 2007, surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Beloved husband of 62 years to Betty Greer (nee Waring) and cherished father to daughters Bonnie Getzlaf (Ken) of White Rock, B.C., and Patricia Greer (Merv Kirby) of Caledon, Ontario. Predeceased by his parents Roy and Georgina (Carr) Greer, sister Gwen Hanna Curran, and brother Clarence Greer. Survived by his brother Lyle (Shirley) Greer of Fairfield East, Ontario, numerous nieces and nephews, and grand-children Sue Legault (Doug Smith) of Coquitlam, B.C., Alex Getzlaf (Joanna) of Chilliwack, B.C., Christina Trible (Lamont) of Oceanside, CA, and great-grandchildren Devon, Alexander, Catherine, Emily and Elizabeth Getzlaf of Chilliwack, B.C., as well as Gerry and June (Waring) Metcalfe and family of Maidenhead, U.K. Larry was born at home on the family dairy farm and graduated from Brockville Collegiate. He served overseas in WWII as a Flying Officer with the RCAF, 425 French Canadian Allouette Squadron from 1940 to 1944, and saw duty in North Africa and Italy. He joined the Bank of Toronto in Brockville in 1938 and moved up the ranks to manager, working at branches in Owen Sound, Preston, Peterborough, Kitchener, North Bay, and finally Ottawa. He was an active supporter of numerous service clubs, including Kiwanis, Kinsmen, Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Legion, Cancer Society, and Masonic Lodge, to name a few. After 45 years in the bank, he retired in July 1983 and returned to the beloved home he and Betty had built on Tilden Lake near North Bay, where they spent the next 18 years. In 2001 they relocated to Wilmot Creek in Newcastle. Larry and Betty traveled extensively throughout their lives together and especially enjoyed their retirement years trailering about North America and taking several cruises. Friends and family remember Larry as a kind, gentle man with a warm smile, curious about people and things, and always willing to listen. He was honest and fair-minded and always gave his best efforts to his family and career. Larry was loved and admired by all who knew him. In Larry’s memory, donations to the Howard Cemetery Fund would be greatly appreciated (c/o Edward Blake, 29 Pinewood Rd., Brockville ON K6V 6K3), or to a charity of your choice.

Matti O. Aaltonen
AALTONEN, Matti O. (Past Treasurer for the Gospel of Businessmen, Peterborough Chapter; WWII Veteran; retired employee of Atomic Energy of Canada). Went to be with the Lord at St. Joseph’s at Fleming on Good Friday, April 6, 2007, at the age of 82. Beloved husband of Marjatta. Loving father of Tuula Speirs (Brian) of Calgary, and the late Allan, and step-father of Pete Hannikainen (Shelley), Katriina Vaisanen (Pete), and the late Kari. Dear grandfather of Morgan and Jaana and great-grandfather of Connor. Step-grandfather of Pete, Michael, Kalle, Kristina, Karolynn, and Peter, and step-great-grandfather of Kody and Alina. Matti will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Matti supported Marjatta’s concerts in Finland for Exodus work. A special thank-you to the nurses at St.Joseph’s at Fleming for their exceptional care. PARKES, Zona Maureen – surrounded by her loving family at Foster brooke Long Term Care Facility, Newcastle, our vigil finally ended on Friday, April 6, 2007. Our mother’s great heart beats no more. While she lived, it embraced all those she loved: her husband, Les; her children and their spouses, Valerie and Steve Bakunowicz, Clive and Jun Parkes, Jill and Tom Bickle; her grandchildren Erin, Sara, Erica, Kyle, Lily and Fei; and all her dear relatives and precious friends in Port Perry and Sugarbush. PEARCE, Barbara (nee Varga) – suddenly with her family at her side, on Friday, March 30, 2007, at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, in her 61st year. Barb, loving wife for 38 years of Larry of Newcastle. Dear mother of Michael and his wife Cindy of Newcastle, Jeffrey and his wife Autumn of Bowmanville, and the late Marty. Grandma to Jayden. Dear sister of Emil Varga and his wife Pat, and Kathy Ruttan and her husband Ken, all of Peterborough. Sadly missed by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, and her neighbours and friends. Barb will also be missed by her four-legged companion B.B. and her feathered friend Moe. LEMPEN, Hans – Peacefully at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Sunday, March 18, 2007 in his 86th year. Loving husband of Luise. Dear father of Cathy and her husband Mike Ciupa of Toronto, John Lempen and his wife Patti of Moncton, N.B, Barb and her husband Rick Pecman of Oshawa and Linda and her husband Al Rienstra of Baltimore. Caring grandpa of Erin and Alex; Randi, Kelsie and Dakota; Tyler and Kylee; Tristan and Shelby and the late Andy. Hans is survived by his siblings Erna, Olga, Hedy, Werner and Honni and predeceased by Jacob, Ernst, Gottfried and Edwin, all of Switzerland. Dot, loving wife of Ron Fagan of Orono. Dear mother of Deborah and her husband Bob Yake of Warkworth, Cindy and her husband Leo Adegeest of Bowmanville, and Bonita Bergsma of Oshawa Sadly missed by many grandchildren, her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Bob, loving husband of Rosy, and stepfather of Jenni of Newtonville. Dear son of Olive and Trueman Henderson of Newcastle. Brother of William and Christine Henderson of Oshawa, Brenda and Nelson Leudke of Temagami, Ontario, David and Eleanor Henderson of Newcastle, Douglas and Brenda Henderson of Orono, and Ronald Henderson of Temagami, Ontario. Uncle to Shawna, David, Chris, Jessica, Jennifer, Michelle, Robyn and Scott. Sadly missed by many other relatives and friends, and his special four-legged companions Morgan and Matilda. Dear great-grandfather of Breanna, Alliyah and Kiara Kidd, and Meghan Fleming. Brother of Russell, Doreen Lillico and Maxine Buott. Predeceased by parents Edith and Percy Kidd; brothers Ivan, Arnold and Orland; sisters Olive Bulmer, Elva Bertrand, Myrtle Wilson and Leatha; sisters-in-law Hazel Kidd, Edith Bulmer, Lorraine Kidd, Ethel, Dorothy, Elda, and Jean Stockdale. Survived by sisters-in-law Joyce Kidd Yabsley and Lorene Stockdale, and brothers-in-law Sherman, George, Stuart and Eldon Stockdale and Maurice Yabsley.
