TOMPKINS, Ethel “May” (nee Austin) – died peacefully at home on Monday, December 11, 2006, in her 93rd year. May, beloved wife of the late Bert Tompkins. Loved mother of Ralph and his wife Hazann of Port Hope, and Ray and his wife Doris of Newtonville. Survived by her four grandchildren, Doug (Monica), Dan (Sheryl), Shelly (John), Robert (Angie), and her 11 great-grandchildren, David, Matthew, Christopher, Meghan, Diego, Mateo, Amanda, John, Crystal, Chelsea, and Courtney. Sister of Bertha Floyd, Emily Breward, and the late Arthur and Howard Austin. Donations in May’s memory to the St. Elizabeth Health Care Services or Newtonville United Church would be appreciated by her family.
Funeral Details: Friends may call at the NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 386 Mill St. S. (just north of 401 at the lights) on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 1:00 p.m. Interment Lakeview Cemetery, Newtonville.

CARGILL, Ursula H. – passed away at her home in Mississauga on Sunday, December 10, 2006, at the age of 59. Survived by her daughter Connie Cargill, her sister Ingrid Blodgett, brother Raymond Becher, and many family members and friends. Predeceased by her brother Arnold Becher. CAMPBELL, Wallace C. “Wally” (retired 27 year employee of CBM, Whitby; collector of Classic Chevy Trucks) - after a lengthy illness at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 in his 62nd year. Wally, loving husband of Sandra (nee Porter) of Bowmanville for 43 years. Dear father of Dean and his wife Rebecca of Oakville, Rebecca and her husband Will O’Grady of Newcastle and the late Dena. Beloved Papa of Liam, Nevan and Jonah. Caring son-in-law of Mildred “Millie” Porter of Oshawa. Loved Brother of Harry Campbell and his wife Sharon of Edmonton; brother-in-law of Donna and her husband Kevin Becker of Tavistock and Frank Porter and his wife Loya of Alberta. Dear mother of Debbie Perron and her husband Alain of Ottawa, John Fuoco of Gatineau, Quebec, Dr. Paul Deneault and his wife Dr. Jasmin Deneault of Denver, Colorado, and the late Michael Deneault. Sadly missed by many grandchildren. Sister of Ruth Patterson and her husband Sam of Newcastle, and Pauline Toms and her husband Bill of Bobcaygeon. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by her family.

PLAYFORD, Ronald Frank – suddenly on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, while surrounded by his family at Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, Ron passed away in his 74th year. Loving husband and life-long companion of Mae. Dear father of Ronnie Playford, Patti Lucas of Kendal, and Joanne Playford of Vancouver. Papa to Melissa, Tommy, Samantha, Sarah-Jayne, and Kendall-Leigh Lucas, as well as Lee-Ann, Paul, Race, Kyle, and Jake. Best friend to many, especially Frank Remmer, Jim Macklem, and Craig McGraw. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Durham Regional Cancer Centre in Ron’s memory would be appreciated by his family. Norma I. Kane
NORMA I. KANE (nee Brown)
November 22, 1929 – November 22, 2006
It is with sadness that I announce the passing of my wife of 53 years, on her 77th birthday at her residence in Wilmot Creek. Norma fought bravely through many illnesses; however, this recent one proved to be too much. She succumbed this time but not without a battle. Norma was a bright lady who was employed by Reed Stenhouse as an insurance broker for 40 years. I would like to thank all members of the palliative care team, especially Dr. Vincent Ho, the nurses at Paramed, and all the workers at Comcare for the dedication they gave to Norma. Beloved wife and best friend of John Kane of Wilmot Creek. Loving sister of Gilbert Brown and his late wife Frances, Leta Rennie and her husband John, and Jack Clarke and his wife Lynda. Dear aunt of Grant Rennie and his wife Lisa, David Clarke and his wife Jayne, and Wayne Brown. Sadly missed by her four-legged companion Jiggs. Donations in Norma’s memory to the Lung Association would be greatly appreciated.

Sergeant Lenard Smith
SMITH, Sergeant Lenard Henry Markwick, C.D. – it is with great sadness that the family announces his passing on November 20, 2006, at the age of 71 years in Hinton, Alberta. Born January 5, 1935, in Peterborough, Ontario, Sergeant Smith was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and served in Korea, Cyprus, and Egypt. Lenard will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Marion, and his two grandchildren Jennifer and David, who he resided with for the past six years in Hinton, Alberta. Lenard will also be fondly remembered by his son James (Kim) of Ottawa, Ontario, his grand-daughters Kendra and Kelsey, and his brother Gary (Sharon) of Peterborough. Uncle of Dorianne, Kirk, and Natasha. Lenard will also be forever remembered by his extended family and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Henry Alfred Smith and Marion Nancy Smith, as well as his nephew Dorian Douglas Smith. A Arrangements entrusted to NEWCASTLE FUNERAL HOME, 1-877-987-3964.

Loving husband and best friend of Ruth for 55 years. Dear father of Randy and his wife Linda, Gayle Goodwin, and the late Mike. Proudest fan of his much loved grand-daughter Carly, and a great supporter of her Durham Girls Hockey Association. Beloved brother of Audrie Ruffell and her late husband Bill; brother-in-law to Joan and Paul Young and Betty and Jack Crossman.
