Agnes Rita Bain, 87, of 110 Windsor St., Sydney, formerly of Margaree Valley, died Monday, August 9, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney she was the daughter of the late Henry J. and Ellen (White) Carroll of Newfoundland. She was a member of St. Anthony Daniel Parish and formerly of St. Patrick's Parish, Margaree. She lived 28 years in Windsor, Ontario where she was employed by Ontario Hydro.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband Ralph H. Bain in 1981 and by four sisters, Irene, Florence, Mary and Helen; three brothers, Russell, Fred and William.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony Daniel Parish with Rev. N. MacPhee officiating. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Margaree. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.

Catherine Dowling
72, Arlington, Mass.
Catherine M. Dowling (MacDonald), 72, of Arlington, Mass., passed away suddenly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sun., Aug. 8, 1999.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Catherine (McManus) MacDonald. Surviving are her husband Jim; sons, Jim, David and daughter Kathy; also four grandchildren, all of Massachusetts; brothers, John P. (Anne), Glace Bay, Doug (Tootsie), New Waterford and Mike (Ursula), Reserve Mines and one sister Florence Willigar, Glace Bay.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Mary Margaret.
Visitation will take place at Grannon and Salville Funeral Home, Mass Ave., Arlington, Mass. Arrangements entrusted to Curry Funeral Home, Glace Bay.

Bernadette Hoganson
80, Ontario
Suddenly on Saturday, August 7, 1999, in her 80th year, Bernadette MacDonald beloved wife of the late George Howard (Torchy) Hoganson. Much loved aunt of Bernadette (Berny) Tracz of Kanata and loving great aunt of John Tracz.
Predeceased by sisters Flora MacDonald, Kathleen Jacobs, Agnes Kearney and brother Michael Kearney.
Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes 3440 Richmond Rd., Nepean, Ontario, on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Isidore Roman Catholic Church March Rd., Kanata, Ontario on Wed. at 11 a.m. Interment Parish Cemetery.
Those wishing may make memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Humane Society.

M. Irene (Martell) Jones
85, Halifax
M. Irene (Martell) Jones, 85, of Halifax died August 8, 1999, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII Site.
Born in L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Celeste (Sampson) Martell. She was a life long member of St. Catherine of Sienna CWL, she was also a past member of the N.S. Progressive Conservative Women's Association.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold; infant son Gerald; brothers Eddie, Harry and Gerald.
She is survived by her son Joe, L'Ardoise, Cape Breton; daughter Lorraine Wyatt Bond, Halifax; Doreen (Bryan) Tanner, Cple Harbour; brother Alfred Martell, Halifax; sisters Rose Lawrence, Monrovia, California, and Lola St. Louis, Fort Erie, Ontario; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday) and 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Wednesday in J.A. Snow's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street. Funeral mass will be 3 p.m. Wednesday in St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Raymond March officiating. Cremation to follow with urn burial at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society.

John Roderick MacLeod
75, Howie Centre
John Roderick (Roddie) MacLeod, 75, a long time resident of Loch Lomond before moving to Curry Street, Howie Centre, died Monday, August 9, 1999 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Loch Lomond, he was a son of the late Rory and Flora (MacKillop) MacLeod. He was employed at Municipal ready Mix, Kaiser Mines and self-employed in the pulp business prior to his retirement. He was the last member of his immediate family .
He is survived by son: Russell, Sydney; grandson, Jason; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Mariah MacDonald; two sons, Cameron and Kyle; five sisters, Catherine, Mary, Mod, Annie and Christy-Ann; three brothers: Donald, Alfred and Dan Alex.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Tuesday 2-4,7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Wednesday 2 p.m. with Pastor Kevin Richardson officiating. Interment in Pioneer Cemetery, Loch Lomond.

Helen L. Martin
Merricmack, New Hampshire
Helen Martin passed peacefully away at the Southern New Hampshire Medical Centre on Saturday, August 7, 1999. Born in Dominion, She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. C. Gregor. She worked at Bonnell's Furniture Store for many years. After moving to the United States she worked in the Cosmetology industry in Tampa, Florida until she retired.
She is survived by her loving husband, Wm. P. Martin; dear sisters, Jeanette MacLean, The Cove Guest Home, Sydney, Rebecca Lewis, Charlottetown, PEI, Thelma (Earl) Burns, Westmount; brother, Wm. James Gregor, Toronto, Ontario.
Also surviving are brother- in-law, Al Saher, Saskatoon, Sask.; sister-in-law, Carol Gregor, Newcastle, N.B., and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by brothers Elmer and Frederick and sisters Georgina Beaton and Dorothy Saher.
Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wed., Aug. 11, 1999, at Sydney Memorial Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thurs., Aug. 11 ,1999, at Sydney Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bernice Spracklin officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Westmount United Church.

Gerald (Boogie) MacNeil
74, Glace Bay
Gerald (Boogie) McNeil, 74, of 190 Reserve St., Glace Bay, died peacefully, Monday, August 9, 1999, at home.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (MacKenzie) McNeil. Gerald, a lifetime resident of Reserve Mines, worked as a labourer with the building trade for 38 years. His favourite pastime was going to bingo and he will be greatly missed by the many friends and acquaintances he made during that time. He was a veteran of the Second World War, a member of Branch 2 Royal Canadian Legion, Reserve Mines and also a chartered member of the Local 1115 Labourers Union.
He is survived by brothers, Sheldon (Anne) McNeil, Reserve Mines and Duggan (Carly) McNeil of Ontario; grandchildren, Debbie (Gerald) Crane, Reserve Mines, Bobby (Lynn) McNeil, Derrick (Laurie) McNeil, both of Glace Bay, Midge (Glenn) Binder, Reserve Mines, Annette McNeil, Glace Bay. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Lucy (Burns) McNeil; brothers, Earl, Roy and one brother in infancy and by a sister, Audrey.
A Christian farewell will be held in Curry's Funeral Home Chapel 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Diabetes Association. Sadly missed but forever in our hearts. We love you.

Norman Simon, formerly of Glace Bay, N.S. died Thursday, August 5, 1999, in Toronto, Ontario.
Beloved husband of Simmie. Loving father and father-in-law of Edwin, Ron and Elaine. Dear brother of Jennie Cherun, Bessie Goldberg, Phil, Maurice, the late Joe Simon and Bertha Shore. Grandfather of Alexee and Jory.

Sarah (Honey) Hancock
74, St. Catherines, Ont.
Sarah (Honey) Hancock, 74, of St. Catharines, Ontario, died July 26 at home after a long illness.
Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of Catherine (Tootise) MacLeod and the late Dan F. MacLeod.
Surviving are husband Lloyd, daughter, Joy, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, sister Margie (William) Gilmet.
Predeceased by son Daniel and brothers Gerald and Angus.
Funeral Services were held at the Community Church in St. Ann’s, Ontario and cremation has taken and burial was in St. Ann’s Cemetery.

Patricia Ann Markojohn
45, New Waterford
Patricia Ann Markotjohn (nee Kavanaugh), 45, of 3382 Hinchey Ave., New Waterford, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of John ‘Bo’ and Edwina ‘Dinnie’ (Haley) Kavanaugh, New Waterford. She was at one time employed at Maple Hill Manor. She was a former member of couples country line dancing and also a former member of the Circle Evangeline Dart League.
She is survived by her loving husband, Angelo and beloved son, Jamie, at home; five brothers, Tommy (Mary), New Brunswick, Kenny (Monica), Edmonton, Jackie (Shauna), New Waterford, Robert (Bernice), Calgary and Dan, New Waterford; two sisters, Janice (Mrs. Danny Wareham), New Waterford and Jessie Kavanaugh, New Waterford; she is also survived by several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
Visitation will be held Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral mass will take place Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church with Fr. Lester Marchand officiating. Cremation to follow. Burial will be in the parish Cemetery.
Her weary hours and days of pain
Her troubled nights are past,
In our aching hearts we know,
She has found sweet rest at last.

Charles Robert Muggah
91, Sydney
Charles Robert Muggah, 91, of Keltic Drive, Sydney passed away Monday, August 9,1999, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Edward and Agnes (Bown) Muggah. He was employed with the Federal Screw Works, Detroit, until his retirement in 1985.
He is survived by one daughter, Ann (Ernest) Burton, Sydney River; two sons, Ben, Sackville, N.S. and Charles (Bud), Sydney; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Dorothea Bertha Clifford; one sister, Mary.
Visitation will he held in Sydney Memorial Chapel Wednesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. with funeral service in the chapel Thursday 1 p.m. with Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment in Alfred Smith Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to charity of one’s choice.

Mary O'Connell
Kitchener, Ont.
Mary O’Connell, formerly of Tenth St., New Aberdeen, passed away in Kitchener, Ont. on August 4, 1999.
She is the daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret O’Connell. She will be missed by four sons; one daughter; nine sisters; one brother of Ontario and a brother Joseph of Glace Bay.
She was predecesed by her husband Stewart Bartley; two sisters and two brothers.

Gordon Nelson (Bud) Sheppard
64, Sydney
Gordon Nelson (Bud) Sheppard, 64, of Willow Street, Sydney, passed away Monday, August 9, 1999, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Graham and Margaret (MacQueen) Sheppard. He was a member of St. Alban’s Anglican Church. He worked for the City of Sydney Works Department for 23 years before retiring.
He is survived by his wife the former Glenda Serrick; two daughters, Peggy (Michael) Hooper, Sydney, Claudia (Bob) Gilbert, Winnipeg; one stepdaughter, Dana (John) MacNeil, at home; one son, Gordie (Brenda), Sarnia, Ont.; one stepson, Gerald (France) Kyte, Ottawa; two sisters, Jean Wylde, Sydney and Elinor MacDonald, Sydney; three brothers, John, Clyde and Earl, all of Sydney, and several precious grandchildren.
Your spirit and your love will be with us forever and always in our thoughts and our prayers - Glenda and children.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Douglas and Donald; as well as a brother and sister in infancy.
Visitation will be held today 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held Thursday 3 p.m. at St. Alban’s Anglican Church with the Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Interment will be held in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Dorothy L. Bezanson
76, Sydney
Dorothy L. Bezanson, 76, died at the home of Alvin and Willena Ross, Coxheath Road on Sunday, August 8,1999. She was a daughter of the late David and Sadie (Gillis) Bezanson.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by an infant sister, Mary Ann, and in 1998 by her brother Bertram.
She is survived by one brother, Hazen, of Hampton, New Brunswick, and nine nieces and nephews.
She worked for many years at the Cape Breton County Court House, first in the office of the Crown Prosecutor and then in the Sheriff and Prothonotary’s office. She held the position in the Prothonotary until she retired. She was a faithful member of United Baptist Church, Sydney.
A memorial service will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday, Aug.14 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Charity of one’s choice.

Suzanne C. Deacon
88, Sydney
Suzanne C. Deacon, 88, of Yendys St., Sydney, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 1999 at her residence.
Born in Lark Harbour, Nfld., she was a daughter of the late Mosey and Grace (Neil) Murrin.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marie Dicks, Grand Lake Road, Mrs. Evelyn Walters, Scarborough, Ont. and Mrs. Phyllis MacNeil, of Kitchener, Ont.; four sons, Murdock, with whom she resided, Clarence, Picton, Ont., Melvin, Lindsay, Ont. and Roy, Brantford, Ont.; 27 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Tilley Piercy, Nfld.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence and seven brothers.
Visitation will be held in Sydney Memorial Chapel today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held in St. Anthony Daniel Church Friday at 11 a.m. with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Internment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

Danny MacDonald
44, Sydney
Daniel Bernard MacDonald, 44, of 538 Charlotte St., Sydney, formerly of Ben Eoin, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999.
Born at Sydney, he was the son of Bernie MacDonald of Sydney and the late Marge (Williams) MacDonald. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1976. Danny practiced as a chartered accountant in the local area. He was very involved in the production of local entertainment events for the past number of years.
He is survived by his wife, the former Anne Campbell; two sons, Jason and Lachlan, both of Sydney; two brothers, Michael, Hull, Quebec and Paul, Sydney.
Friends may call upon the family between 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 13, 1999 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on the upper level. A reception will follow across the street at Christ Church Hall beginning at 8 p.m.

Archibald B. Rennie, 64, of West Bay Road, Inverness Co., died Monday, August 9, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Inverness, he was the son of the late William and Elsie (Brushit) Rennie. He was employed with Colgate-Palmolive until retirement.
He is survived by four daughters, Arlene Rennie, Lori Rennie and Suzanne Barkley, all of Ontario, and Sandy Graham of Edmonton; one son, Ted, Ontario; six grandchildren; two sisters, Doreen, Dominion and Sadie, St. Catharines, Ont., and one brother, Bill, Port Hawkesbury.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
