Theresa B. Bennett
70, Glace Bay
Theresa B. Bennett, 70, of 19-9th St., Glace Bay, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Lucy Osborne (Kelly), Glace Bay. She was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay.
Theresa is survived by one sister, Carmella, Glace Bay; four brothers, James (Mary), Ontario, Fabian, Ontario, Allie (Kaye), Dominion and Joe, Glace Bay.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Pat and Leroy.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and a special grandnephew, Kevin Morgan.
Upon Theresa’s request, there will be no visitation. A private service will be held at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Burial will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating.
Words could never express the emptiness we feel inside. Theresa you will always hold a special place in all our hearts. Always remembered but will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Harvey L. Gregor
63, North Bay, Ont.
The death of Harvey L. Gregor, 63, formerly of New Waterford, occurred at North Bay, Ont. on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999.
Harvey was the son of Harry Gregor, Bras d’Or formerly of New Waterford and his wife Margaret (Howatson).
Harvey is survived by his wife, Bernice (Kearney), formerly of New Waterford; daughters, Anne (John) Greco, Michelle and Allyn, all of North Bay, Ont.; three grandchildren, David, Markus and Sierra; sister, Jean Hennan, Bridgewater, N.S.; brothers, George, Richmond, B.C. and John (Ellen), Marion Bridge.
Harvey was predeceased by his mother, Hazel (Knox) Gregor and a sister-in-law, Ann (MacGibbon) Gregor.
Funeral service was held from MacGuinty Funeral Home, North Bay, conducted by Rev. Mr. Kitts on Sunday, Sept. 5.
Interment will take place at Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown, Sept. 14 with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.

John James (Skit) Hache
78, Scotchtown
John Joseph (Skit) Hache, 78, of 135 Cashen Crescent, Scotchtown, passed away Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Reserve Mines, he was the son of the late Samuel and Judique (Chiasson) Hache. He was a former employee of J.W. Stephens.
Surviving are son, William Calvin (wife Debra) Hache, Toronto; daughter, Ida Close, Bradford, Ont.; brother, Simon, (Sacko) Hache, Reserve Mines and sister, Elizabeth McInnis, Glace Bay.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Rita Ross, brothers, William, Alex and Benedict, sisters, Katie, Margaret and Mary. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Hache. Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will follow in the parish Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations in Mr. Hache’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society are suggested as expressions of sympathy.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.

Catherine (MacLean) MacLeod
84, Sydney
Catherine (MacLean) MacLeod, 84, of Sydney, N.S., died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Jessie (Reid) MacLean.
She retired from Maritime Tel and Tel in 1968. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Church, Sydney and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She was an ardent sports fan.
She is survived by one sister, Chris Scade, Edmonton, Alta. and a brother, Gordon, Sydney, N.S. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Neilan K., South Bar.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Sharon Irving officiating. Interment in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Cemetery, Framboise.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Michael William (Billy) MacVicar
43, Dominion
Visitation for Mr. MacVicar will be held today (Tuesday) 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday 11 a.m. in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in the parish Cemetery.
Donations to the Cancer Society or Palliative Care Society would be appreciated as memorials.

John Henry Morrison
89, Upper Leitches Creek
John Henry Morrison, 89, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Upper Leitches Creek, he was a son of the late John and Mary (MacCormack) Morrison.
He was a self-employed lumberman and farmer for most of his working years. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces during the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 19 and was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret MacInnis and Mary; six brothers, Lauchie, Roddie, Angus, Martin, Dan and Malcolm.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Wednesday 10 a.m. from St. Mary’s Church, Frenchvale with the Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial to follow in the parish Cemetery.

Walter Samuel Petite
71, Sydney Mines
Mr. Walter Samuel Petite, 71, of 3 Brown St., Sydney Mines, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Murray) Petite.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Wally was a faithful employee of the Cape Breton Development Corp. for 43 years, retiring in 1986. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his cottage at Kempt Head.
He is survived by his wife, Moira (Dickson) Petite; daughters, Ruth Ann Petite, Fort McMurray, Kathryn (Mrs. Kenneth Jessome), Sydney Mines; grandchildren Danielle and Ricky MacQueen and Joshua and Zachary Jessome; sisters, Ruth (Roy) Demerling, Florida, Mable (Tom) Sainthill, North Sydney; brother, Joseph, North Sydney and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Annie and brothers, Jack and Victor.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ian MacLeod officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the charity of choice.

Sonny Slade
Sydney
It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of Thomas Seward (Sonny) Slade, of 44 Bristol Dr., Sydney, on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999.
Sonny passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Born in Sydney, Sonny was the son of the late John and Nora (Bonaparte) Slade also of Sydney.
As well as being a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend to all who knew him, Sonny was a well known and respected musician for most of his life. A versatile musician, Sonny’s musical career has spanned many decades and styles of music. Both as a soloist and accompanist, Sonny was recognized as an accomplished guitarist, fiddler and mandolin player. Sonny’s unique passion and love of music was so great that in later years he taught music lessons and enjoyed being involved in instrument repair.
Sonny is survived by his loving and caring wife, the former Doreen Jessome; and by his children, sons, Ricky, Fort McMurray, Alta., Glen (Linda), Stephen (Trisha), Seward (Midge) and daughter, Gina (Jim), all of Sydney. He is also survived by his loving brother, Jim (Marcella) Slade, New Waterford; eight grandchildren, whom he loved and cared about deeply and who will miss him dearly also.
Visitation for the late Mr. Slade will be at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass, in celebration of Sonny’s life, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa’s Church with Rev. Angus MacDougall officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
His weary hours and days of pain
His troubled nights are passed
In our aching hearts we know
He has found sweet rest at last.

Doris Woodland
New Waterford
Doris Woodland, Birch Avenue, New Waterford, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Westville, N.S., she was a daughter of the late Percy and Ella May (Marshall) Harris.
She was a member of Calvin United Church and a member of the United Church Women. Also a member of the Women’s Auxiliary Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 15; the Scotchtown Pensioners Club and New Waterford Pensioners Club.
She is survived by one son, John (wife Margie), New Waterford; one brother, Lynn (wife Audrey), Toronto; two grandsons, Hugh and David; one very special sister-in-law, Delia Harris, P.E.I.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, two sisters, Arlene and Phyllis, four brothers, Al, Gordon, Sherman and Alex.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Wednesday 3 p.m. at Calvin United Church, New Waterford. Burial at Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.
Cremation services under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.

Lillian Blunden
Oromocto, N.B.
In Oromocto, N.B., on Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, Lillian Moffatt (nee MacKay) Blunden, passed away peacefully at her home.
Lillian was born in Glace Bay, N.S., on Sept. 25, 1928, before moving to Oromocto in 1991. She was the only daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine (Moffatt) MacKay.
Lillian is survived by her husband, William; son, Greg (Tania), Cobury, Ont. and daughter, Kelly Binder (Michael), Oromocto, N.B.; five grandchildren, Gregory, Michael, Ryan and Connor Binder and William Blunden. Also survived by one brother, Robert MacKay (Muriel), Glace Bay, N.S. and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation to take place in New Brunswick. A graveside committal service will be held Friday, Sept. 17, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Eric Lynk officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements under the care of the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.

Agnes C. Gillis, RN
New Waterford
Agnes Christina Gillis, RN, former resident of Mahon Street and MacLeod Avenue, New Waterford, died in Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay, on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999.
Born in Grand Mira, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine (MacDonald) Gillis.
She was a member of St. Agnes Parish. She was a lieutenant in the nurses corps during the Second World War. She was employed with the New Waterford School Board, as a nurse, serving all schools in New Waterford and area. Up to retirement, she was a school nurse in the comprehensive education system at BEC. Agnes co-ordinated the New Waterford Rotary Clinic for many years and was recognized by the New Waterford Rotary Club for her dedicated and professional service. She was held in high esteem by all the local physicians and specialists from the Halifax area, along with teachers, students and parents.
Surviving are one sister, Josephine McLeod, Beaver Cove; one foster brother, Ray Murphy, New Waterford and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, James and Alex and sisters, Margaret, Ann Buttlar, Rose and Jennie Markotjohn.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Friday, 11 a.m. St. Agnes Church, Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Burial in the parish Cemetery.

The death of Harvey L. Gregor, 63, formerly of New Waterford, occured at North Bay, Ont., on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999.

Laurence James Kenny
62, Ontario
Laurence James Kenny (Retiree of Stelco). Suddenly, yet peacefully, while at St. Lawrence’s Church, Laurence passed away Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, in his 62nd year.
Dear son of Catherine (Kenny) McGee, whom he always praised for being the ‘greatest gift’ in his life. Beloved husband and friend of Donna Kenny. Loving father of Janet and her husband John, Larry Jr. and his wife Nancy and his youngest daughter Heather. Proud grandfather (Papa) of Zachary, Meagan, Taylor, Laurence and Emily. Sadly missed yet fondly remembered by his dear brother, Howard (Catherine Kenny) and dear sisters, Maureen (Jim Doyle), Mary (Elio Ianetti) and Dorothy (Albert Samara).
Predeceased by his beloved brother, Donald and his sister, Lorraine.
Will be sincerely missed by many friends here and by his buddies and many family members in his home of Cape Breton. His memory forever engraved in our hearts. His warm spirit to embrace us. Will be remembered always for his keen sense of humour, laughter, crazy dances and beautiful song. He was a strong supporter of many charitable organizations.
Friends will be received at the Friscolanti Funeral Chapel, 43 Barton St. East (near James), (905-522-0912), Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Vigil prayers Tuesday at 8 p.m. Funeral mass to be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence’s Church (corner of Mary and Picton). Cremation to follow. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church Wednesday.

Linus Miles MacInnis
69, Scotsburn
Linus Miles MacInnis, 69, of Scotsburn and a former resident of Steele’s Hill, Glace Bay, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Donald (Dan Allen) and Lydia (Turner) MacInnis. He was a member of Saint Anthony’s Parish, Glace Bay and was a long time employee with the Town of Glace Bay Public Works Department. Linus served with the Canadian Armed Forces and was a long time member of Branch 3 Legion, Glace Bay.
He is survived by one daughter, Shunda MacInnis, Scotsburn, N.S.; one son, Eoin, Kentville, N.S.; four brothers, James Oliver MacInnis, Australia, Zane MacInnis, Truro, Justin MacInnis, Scarborough, Ont., Tommy MacInnis, Glace Bay; four sisters, Joan Crowell, Halifax, Karen Hill, Halifax, Delia Buffet, Surrey, B.C. and Sheila Richard, Edmonton, Alta. He is also survived by five granddaughters.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacInnis will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Friday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Saint Anthony’s Church with Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial will be in the parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross or the War Amps.

Ronald McAvoy

Ron McAvoy passed away at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999.
Born in England, he was the son of Clifford Henry McAvoy and Lillian Grace (Sharpe).
He is survived by his father in England; brothers, Ken, England, John, Windsor; also two nephews, Derek and James, both of Ontario; two nieces, Christine, New Jersey and Joy, Ontario.
Cremation has taken place.

Baby Wilfred J. Prosper III

Baby Wilfred Joseph Prosper III, of 4760 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was the son of Wilfred and Laura Ann (Bernard) Prosper of Eskasoni. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Besides his parents he is survived by a brother, Curtis, three sisters, Nicole, Marilyn and Bessie, all at home; by his paternal grandparents, Wilfred and Bessie (Stevens) Prosper, Eskasoni; his maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Lena (Toney) Bernard, Whycocomagh and his great-grandmother, Susan Toney, Whycocomagh.
Interment services for the late Baby Prosper will be held Thursday 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church Cemetery, Eskasoni, Rev. R. MacNeil officiating.
Arrangements entrusted to T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
