GRANT, Dr. W.G.Y.
Of Brooklin Ontario, distinguished physician & surgeon, died after a 15 month battle against brain cancer on March 16, 2001. William Guthrie Young Grant was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1924 and grew-up in Gravenhurst, second son to James Alexander Cockburn Grant MD and Edith May Grant (nee Young) RN. He was the third generation of a pre-eminent medical family. Guthrie Grant was educated at St. Andrew's College, Aurora and the University of Toronto, from which he graduated in Medicine 1947. His medical and surgical residences were completed at St. Michael's and Toronto General Hospitals. In 1948 he joined W.W. Baldwin MD and the Brooklin Medical Center in the Village of Brooklin. During the early years in Brooklin he met his wife, Joy Bedson of Winnipeg MB, through their mutual friends, Roger and Frances Conant. They were married half a century ago. Dr. Grant enjoyed his role as Brooklin's country doctor for 50 years-sometimes caring for four generations of the same family. He was active in the medical leadership in his community and served as Chief of Staff with both Oshawa General Hospital and the J.O. Ruddy Hospital in Whitby (both hospitals now part of the Lakeridge Health Group). He also served on Durhams District Health Council for many years. In the community he served on the Public School Board and as a Warden of St. Thomas' Anglican Church, Brooklin. Known to his friends and colleagues as Guthrie, he had a keen interest in geriatric medicine. He served as chief medical advisor for Fairview Manor in Whitby for 26 years. Guthrie and Joy enjoyed their Scottish Deerhounds- they and the hounds were oft to be found in obscure fields throughout the Durham region and along beaches at their retreat in Victoria Beach, Manitoba. Guthrie was also very fond of sailing. In 1980 he completed a 21 day Atlantic crossing from Halifax to Plymouth, UK, as navigator, aboard the Leonora IV a 35' ketch. Another passion was mineralogy. Indeed a notable feature of the family home is the extent of its mineralogical ballast. Guthrie is survived by his wife Joy, his brother James (of Burnaby BC), his children-Iain (and Heather), Jane (and James Short), Gail, Donald (and Marsha), and his grandchildren-Alasdair, Alexander, Fraser, Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel and Samuel, and by David Hubbs MD, following in his footsteps. Guthrie Grant will be sorely missed by his devoted family, by all those whose lives he touched, by his esteemed colleagues, and by his many friends in Canada and around the world. The family will receive friends at MEMORIAL CHAPEL BROOKLIN, 79 Baldwin Street Brooklin from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday March 19. Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas' Anglican Church, Brooklin Ontario, Tuesday March 20, at 11:30 a.m. followed by Interment later at St. Paul's Cemetery, Columbus.
